Chapter 35: The Sound of Silence; Game Over
After informing Aria about what was going on outside the game, Lloyd and the ninja took off to complete the game. They did attempt to convince her to join them, but she refused. Aria wanted to enjoy her time in the spotlight a little longer. Lloyd didn't say it out loud, but that really worried him.
Aria spent her days in the game performing, and her nights partying. Her followers and her enjoyed their carefree time in the game, as if nothing else mattered to them. It was almost as if they were trying to escape the reality of the real world, wishing the days would never end.
"Are you enjoying your time?"
Aria sighs as she places her cup down, all around her the people have frozen and the music was drowned out.
"I was," Aria replies. "Unagami."
"There are those attempting to stop me,"
"And?" Aria crosses her legs as she sat on the couch. "I'll give you the same answer I gave my father," She smiles "Go to hell."
"Are you forgetting who's allowing you to live in this world as you please?!"
"What do you want me to do?" Aria asks. "I don't know... nor do I care what your plans are. I'm not interfering."
"Stop them!"
"You're sounding just like my father," Aria looks annoyed. "I don't do that shit; besides they're my friends. Your downfall, will be all on you."
"So be it."
Time returned to normal, and Aria looked confused. Usually, they would bicker more. Suddenly, the lights went out along with the music, Aria stood up from her seat as the players looked startled. Aria rushed to the front of the room, looking around.
The doors burst open and red visors come marching in.
"Everyone hide!" Aria shouts. "Now!"
The players rush away as Aria summons her blade; the red visors start blasting their guns at the retreating players. Aria used her sword to deflect the blasts back at them. Once all the players had taken cover, Aria went on the offence against the red visors.
She took out a few, suffering a few hits to her health. Aria hides behind a table before kicking it into one of the bots. She jumped over them and slices through another group.
"If you really want to take me down Unagami," Aria chuckles as the game glitches around her and her eyes glow purple "you'll have to send more than this."
Aria's blade glows before she cuts through the remaining red visors in one hit. She stood over their bodies as they turned into particles. Aria's sword disappeared as she looked around the room, the players peering out from their hiding spots. Aria sighs as she recognized the look in their eyes.
Without another word, she walked out of the building, appearing in the alleyway that served as the entrance to her hideout.
"Well, that's that," Aria mutters as she walks away.
The usual crowded streets of the city were strangely silent that night as she walked through the game. Aria sat down on the curbside and looked up at the digital sky.
"That's right," Aria closes her eyes. "None of this, is real."
Aria sat with her eyes closed for a while before the silence was broken by approaching footsteps. Aria opens her eyes and faces the female player that stood not far away from her.
"What?" Aria asks them.
"Um," the player looked nervous before suddenly shouting "You're really amazing!"
Aria stares at her for a bit before she started laughing. "What a peculiar thing to say."
"No really, you are!" The player tells her, "I've been a fan of yours since you debuted as an Idol!"
"Haven't you heard?" Aria tilts her head "I'm not an idol anymore, not in the real world, not here either."
"The moment I heard you sing; I fell in love with your voice." The player says, looking down. "I've always thought you made everything look effortless. Despite that... I always thought you sounded... lonely."
"Lonely?" Aria mutters, looking down at her hands. She looks back up at the player "I suppose, I did feel that way, for a while." She shrugs "But I'm a criminal now."
"The crimes against you were dropped!" the female player shouts, looking slightly irritated as she looked back at Aria. "Nobody has a right to ridicule you for anything anymore! You're not a bad person! You worked every day, to make people happy! Just because you didn't live up to everyone's expectations, doesn't mean you're any less worthy!"
Aria's eyes widened, seeing the unwavering passion in what this player was saying. She truly admired and looked up to Aria. Aria smiles slightly as she stood up and walked up to the player.
"Thank you," Aria tells her. "Really... I think I needed to hear that."
"You're welcome," the player smiles happily. "The name's Reika! It's nice to finally meat you, miss Idol!"
"It's I who am truly grateful for you, Reika." Aria tells her. "I hope you'll continue to support me, in the future."
"I will!" Reika shouts excitedly.
Aria chuckles, the two let go as a bright light shines in the sky. All the players make their way towards the light. A white portal opens and on the other side they could see Ninjago city. The players began cheering before they started running through. Reika began to run towards it but stopped when she saw Aria looking back at the digital city.
"Aria," Reika walks back towards her.
Aria looks at Reika as she extends her hand towards her.
"This world, while it seems like a fantasy," Reika says. "It's not real."
"You're right," Aria agrees as she takes her hand. "But it gave me something important."
"What's that?" Reika asks curiously.
"It reminded me how much I love performing," Aria replies. "It reminded me just how much; I love to sing."
"You don't need some grand stage," Reika tells her with a smile. "Cause you're a star that shines all on her own, and I know with time, everyone else will see it too."
With that, the two girls walk out into Ninjago with the other players. Everyone was gathered in the streets being reunited with their families. Reika pats Aria's shoulder before walking away. Aria looked around at everyone before a breeze went past her, the sound of someone humming filled her ears before drifting off with the wind.
"Aria!"
Aria was hugged suddenly, and she looked in front of her to see the other ninja together smiling. Aria put her hand on Lloyd's back, already knowing the person hugging her.
"Look at that," Aria says "You all made it back."
"I'm glad you're safe too," Lloyd says as he released her.
The Whack Rats and the Red Visors return to Prime Empire as the Manifestation Gate turns off.
"Where's Unagami?" Aria asks as she held Lloyd's hand and faced the ninja.
"Somewhere he should be," Wu replies.
The ninja begins to walk through the street together.
"So, how was the game?" Jay asks Aria excitedly.
"It was fun," Aria replies. "I felt like I was on top of the world again."
Lloyd squeezes her hand "I'm sorry, I know you probably felt more like yourself then you have in years."
"I don't regret it," Aria shakes her head.
"Don't regret what?" Kai questions.
"Anything," Aria replies with a smile. "All the choices I've made in my life, have led up to where I am right now. I may be nothing more than some fallen Idol now," She lets go of Lloyd's hand and runs in front of them looking up at the setting sun. "But one day, I'll return to the stage, better than ever!"
The ninja smile as they walk up and stand beside her. Lloyd places a hand on her shoulder.
"I know you will," Lloyd smiles.
"And we'll all support you," Cole tells her.
"I've always told you; nobody shines more brightly than you." Lloyd kisses her on the cheek. "I'm glad, but where did all this suddenly come from?"
Aria smiles as she looks back behind them "I made a friend."
