Chapter 3

"Mon Dieu," Alder said suddenly. He was looking at the TV again.

"What is it?"

"The statistics of the current story," he said. I glanced at the TV and then at our plates. They were empty so then I took them and began to wash them. "Should I change the channel?"

"Go ahead. Wasn't planning on watching the news anyway. It's boring," I said as I washed the plates.

"Ok cool," he said, changing the channel. "Oh Lord Of The Rings is on."

"Which one?" I asked, placing the dishes on the drier.

"The first one." I joined him where he was now sitting, on the couch. "Want to watch it?" I lay back on the couch.

"I'm not really bothered," I said. "We could not watch it. What scene is it on anyway?"

"The meeting in Rivendell. When they are talking about the One Ring."

"So it's quite far into the story?" I asked.

"Well, it's not at the start."

"Hm. I'd rather watch a Broadway musical than that if I'm honest." Alder looked at me.

"Too bad they're very expensive."

"Yip."

"If we saved up we could see one, but that would be a while. If we saw one which one?"

"I think you know what I'm about to say."

"I think I do." I looked at the roof.

"I wouldn't mind seeing Dear Evan Hansen," I said, flippantly. Alder rolled his eyes but he was smiling. "I'm predictable, aren't I?" He nodded.

"Yip. Very much so."

"Even though it wouldn't be with the original cast."

"I feel the same with Hamilton," he said. "I wouldn't mind seeing it even though it wouldn't be with the original cast." We looked at each other.

"We could even save up enough to see both," I suggested. "Be it we want to go." As if on cue, we started singing a duet of Found/Tonight. Alder singing Lin's parts and I, Ben's parts. We finished the song and then burst into laughter.

"That was too good!" I commented.

"I agree," Alder giggled, looking elated.

"I love the songs in that musical so much. That Would Be Enough, Satisfied and History Has Its Eyes On You from Hamilton are also quite nice. Oh and Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story."

"But remember from here on in, history has its eyes on you," Alder sang.

"Yeah, that one! Let me tell you what I'd wished I'd known when I was young and dreamed of glory, you have no control who lives who dies who tells your story."

"President Jefferson."

"Oh we're doing that song? Well then. I'll give him this, his financial system is a work of genius, I couldn't undo it if I tried and... I tried."

"President Madison."

"He took our country from bankruptcy to prosperity, I hate to admit it, but he doesn't get enough credit for all the credit he gave us."

"Every other founding father's story gets told, every other founding father gets to grow old."

"But when you're gone who remembers your name, who keeps your flame? Who tells your story?"

"Who tells your story?"

"Eliza~."

"I put myself back in the narrative."

"Eliza~."

"I stop wasting time on tears, I live another fifty years. It's not enough."

"Eliza~."

"I interview every soldier who fought by your side."

"She tells our story."

"I try to make sense of your thousands of pages of writings, you really do write like you're running out of time. I rely on Angelica."

"Angelica." Alder suddenly changed the song.

"I'm past patiently waiting, I'm passionately smashin' every expectation, every action's an act of creation! I'm laughin' in the face of casualties and sorrow. For the first time, I'm thinkin' past tomorrow!" He started rapping suddenly.

"You were always the better rapper out of both of us," I said, causing him to blush.

"Thanks! Heh." Alder was smiling. It made me happy. I thought back to the box in my side drawer. I'd do it one day not now. And I thought to our cat. Well, she was still just my cat, since Alder didn't know about her. I'd have to decide on a day to reveal her too. I knew Alder would like her. He'd wanted a cat since we were kids.

I remembered that as clear as day.

He didn't know that I had remembered since it was all those years ago.
