Chapter 29
"You think we're soulmates?" I asked Alder the next day. Emmalyn was at school and probably doing her presentation. We'd told her to just do it the way she thought right.
"Of course I do," he answered. He was smiling softly.
"Oh, then, why do you think so?" I asked him. He looked at me.
"Think about it," he said, cupping my cheek. "We've helped each other and stayed together through everything, even our dark pasts. Like you said when you proposed to me: 'we've had our ups and downs'. Our relationship has always been a tricky path and we've always come through the tough parts together."
"Even that time in the hospital. When you revealed that to me. When I was a jerk and left you. We didn't break up, if anything it made us stronger. I think I can see why you think that now," I said.
"And I still believe the things I said to you when you asked me why I loved you. After your 'being a jerk' as you call it. You're still the most kind and caring and innocent person I know. I married my best friend and it's the best thing I said 'yes' to." I pulled him closer to me, in a sort of hug.
"And I'm happy too," I replied. "I was so scared of losing you, but you pulled through all those years ago. Our relationship has and will have difficult parts but what relationship doesn't?" Alder smiled.
"Yip." My heart was racing. Still to this day, even the words he spoke back then in the hospital, made me giddy. It was literally the sweetest.
"Uh huh," I answered. "It'll be us, it'll be us, and only us," I sang, not caring about my soft voice squeaking every so often.
"Boy, you got me helpless~ look into your eyes and the sky's the limit." Alder sang, singing Helpless. I merely smiled. Alder also stopped singing.
"Wise men say, only fools rush in, but I can't help falling in love with you."
"Shall I stay? Would it be a sin? If I can't help falling in love with you." Alder and I both burst out laughing.
"Okay, let's stop singing now," Alder said.
"Agreed."
"How do you think Em's presentation went?" He asked.
"Don't know, we'll have to ask her when she comes home," I said. We walked to the couch and sat down. I wrapped my arm around his waist. "Let's see what's on TV." I turned on the TV and started scrolling through the channels. Alder seemed distracted. "Al?"
He blinked. "Oh sorry, I was thinking about Reyna..."
"Oh." I hugged him. "She's fine," I assured him. "Watch TV with me, 'kay?" Alder straightened and looked at the TV screen. "Oh! Mary Poppins Returns is on! Isn't Lin in that?" Alder perked up.
"He is," he said. "The accent he puts on though," he laughed.
"You can still tell it's his voice and not a voice over with him lip-syncing." I was laughing as well.
"That'd be a crime," Alder agreed. "Especially when he's already proved he can sing on the Hamilton soundtrack and rap. Wasn't Ben Platt~ in the Pitch Perfect films?" He teased. I felt myself blush.
Okay so maybe I still had a crush on the celebrity and maybe listened to his album on repeat sometimes.
"He was. Though he was a small part," I said. "Not that big of a deal." Alder didn't say anything.
"Oh! There's Lin on the bike thingy!" He commented as the Broadway actor came on the screen. "His accent makes me laugh though."
"Yeah, isn't the best."
"Who can blame him though? Some accents are difficult and don't come naturally to some people."
"Like my god-awful French one I try," I commented. Alder sent me a look of horror.
"Yes, never again please."
"Ich bin Sullivan," I said putting on an accent.
"What the?"
"You've never heard German before?" I asked.
"You speak German?"
"Nope. Just know those two words and can do a pretty good accent."
"Ah."
"So the movie," I said. "I thought it was pretty good."
"Eh. It was okay if nothing else," Alder replied. The movie wasn't finished but we'd both seen it before.
"Dad! Father!" Alder and I both turned to face our daughter. She was beaming.
"Hey Em," I said. "How did it go?"
"Well no one gave me crap for it, if that's anything. They acted like it was a perfectly normal thing that could happen. I mean it should be treated that way. Whether or not you're raised by two fathers, mothers or a mother and father. But that's beside the point. Point is, I think it went well."
"That's great Papillon!" Alder said.
"Yeah. It is. Anyway, I have to do homework, bye!" She walked off to her room.
