Chapter 26
I awoke and got out of bed. I had work today. Kissing Alder on his cheek, I left the room and went to the car. The black Volvo shone in the rising sunlight. I smiled at it and got into the car.
The car ride to the veterinarian clinic I worked at wasn't too far. I could walk there if I really wanted to. I blasted musical soundtracks in the car off my phone. "High school is wack but we have each other's back," I sang along to Two-Player Game. I internally giggled. I didn't go to high school anymore. I hadn't gone to school since I graduated back when I was eighteen. But the song basically summed up school. I'd got into Be More Chill when I was much older.
I reached my destination in the middle of Only Us from Dear Evan Hansen. I sighed. That song had basically become mine and Alder's go-to at the random karaoke sessions we did back at home sometimes. The song didn't fit us perfectly, but we still sung it a lot. I left the vehicle and walked into the building. "Sullivan!"
"Daina!" I sent my co-worker a wave. She smiled. "How have you been?"
"Great," She said. She led me deeper into the vet. I waited for my new patient. Daina was talking to her girlfriend.
"Okay... so Chompy coming in for his check up?" Said a voice. "Okay..." I didn't hear the rest. The alligator was brought in and he appeared to be giving me a look.
"Sorry, but it has to be done," I chuckled at the unusual pet. I proceeded with the check up. Chompy was well-behaved for the most part. He did snap at me once or twice.
Oh no... he could... if he wanted to... he could... me.
Pushing that thought away, I continued on with the check up. When that was finished, I returned the alligator to his owner. She thanked me and I walked back.
I returned home, feeling exhausted. I practically collapsed on the couch. I felt my eyes begin to close as tiredness started settling in. I dozed off.
"Tough day?" Alder asked. My eyes shot open. I looked at him with a bashful smile.
"It wasn't tough so much as it was exhausting," I said.
"Oh." He said. I sat up and he joined me on the couch. We started to watch Broadway musical videos on the TV. We started to sing along to the songs we were listening to. "Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now, look around, look around." I smiled as my husband's voice.
"Look at where you are, look at where you started, the fact that you're alive is a miracle, just stay alive, that would be enough," I skipped the parts about Eliza's unborn child, Philip, because that would be awkward.
"I don't pretend to know the challenges you're facing," Alder sang, also omitting the parts that would be awkward. "The worlds you keep erasing and creating in your mind. But I'm not afraid, I know who I married, so long as you come home at the end of the day, that would be enough."
"Oh let me be a part of the narrative in the story they will write someday," I skipped some parts again.
"Let this moment be the first chapter, where you decide to stay.."
"And I could be enough."
"And we could be enough."
"That would be enough." We turned to each other and kissed.
"Can you two please stop being gross for two minutes?" We broke apart and turned at our daughter's voice. Emmalyn was looking at us from the doorway with her bag on.
"Have you just gotten back?" I asked her. She nodded.
"Class went over a bit." She placed her bag down. "Are you guys watching videos?" She joined us on the couch.
"Um yeah," I said, glancing at the TV screen. "We've just been listening to musical songs since I came back from work."
"Oh cool." She said, smiling. Sincerely, Me came on and her eyes brightened.
"I have an idea," Alder said. "How about I sing for Connor, you for Evan and Papillon for Jared?"
"Okay," I said and Emma nodded.
"Dear Evan Hansen we've been way too out of touch, things have been crazy-" Alder did a sort of jazz hand-ish gesture at the 'crazy' "-and it sucks that we don't talk that much, but I should tell you that I think of you each night-" he hummed out the next line as it wasn't that appropriate.
"Why would you write that?!" I said, copying Evan's dialogue in the song.
"I'm just trying to tell the truth," Emmalyn joined in, being Jared.
"This needs to be perfect, these e-mails have to prove that we were actually friends, just- I'll do it."
"I gotta tell ya life without ya has been hard," Alder sang.
"Hard?" Emmalyn made a slight giggle on this.
"-has been bad," Alder sang after Emmalyn's comment.
"Bad?"
"-has been rough!"
"Kinky."
"And I miss talking about life and other stuff."
"Very specific."
"Shut up," I said as Evan.
"I like my parents," Alder sang.
"Who says that?" Emma seemed to really enjoy being Jared.
"I 'love' my parents, but each day's another fight. If I stop smoking drugs then everything might be alright."
"Smoking drugs?" Emmalyn was now putting on a voice for Jared.
"Just fix it!" I said.
"If I stop smoking craCk-" Alder intentionally made himself sound like his voice had cracked.
"Crack?!" I let my surprised tone equal to Evan's.
"If I stop smoking pot then everything might be alright. I'll take your advice, I'll try to be more nice-" Alder shrugged. "I'll turn it around, wait and see. Cause all that it takes is a little re-in-ven-tion, it's easy to change if you give your a-tten-tion, all you gotta do is just believe you can be who you wanna be, Sincerely, Me."
"Are we done yet?" Emma came in as Jared again.
"Well, I can't just give them one e-mail, I want to show that I was like, a good friend ya know?" I came in again.
"Oh my God," Emmalyn laughed.
"Dear Connor Murphy, yes I also miss our talks, stop doing drugs just try to take deep breaths and go on walks-"
"No."
"I'm sending pictures of the most amazing trees-"
"No."
"You'll be obsessed with all my forest expertise!"
"Absolutely not."
"Dude I'm proud of you, just keep pushing through your turning around I can see."
"Just wait and see," Alder joined back in.
We started singing in unison just like Connor and Evan. "Cause that it takes is a little re-in-ven-tion, it's easy to change if you give it your a-tten-tion, all you gotta do is just believe you can be who you wanna be, sincerely, me."
"My sister's hot," Alder sung. Jared makes Connor refer to Zoe here teasing Evan about his crush on Connor's sister.
"What the hell?!" I said as Evan.
"My bad," Emma as Jared said.
"Dear Evan Hansen thanks for every note you send."
"Dear Connor Murphy I'm just glad to be your friend."
We sang in unison again. "Our friendship goes beyond, your average kinda bond."
"But not because we're gay!" I sang as Evan.
"No not because we're gay!" Alder sang as Connor
Unison again. "We're close, but not that way, the only man that I... love... is my...." Alder and I stopped singing and Emmalyn looked at us.
"Isn't the lyric, 'the only man that I love is my dad'?" She asked. Alder and I didn't answer.
"At least we're not like Evan and Connor," Alder said changing the subject. "We are gay for each other." I nodded.
"And we're married. But Evan and Connor not being gay for each other, or even actually knowing each other, doesn't stop the shippers."
"It never does. Some people even ship really odd pairings."
"You sound like we never shipped anything ourselves," I chuckled. "But we have."
The whole family merely chuckled.
