Chapter 13

Alder and I were on the couch watching something on the TV. Neither of us were paying attention. Alder's eyes were closed and rhythmic breaths were coming from him. I smiled at him, running my free hand, his head was resting on my other shoulder, to fur through his long blonde hair. He opened his eyes slightly, smiling. He removed his head from on my shoulder and stretched. "How was your nap?"

"Refreshing," he said, "I'm awake now." He straightened. My husband looked at me. "What were we watching?"

"Well, we were watching Beauty and The Beast and then you decided to fall asleep."

"Oh. Sorry," he said, blinking. "We could always watch something else."

"I know." I looked at the TV screen. "We really need a car..." I said casually. "I mean, walking is getting us good exercise, but what about longer trips? I know we can take taxis but that's more expensive than just owning a car ourselves. I'm not talking about the expenses we would have after getting the car such as petrol."

"We could always start with a cheapish car, or we could save up."

"I don't want a car like a PT Cruiser, I would want a more common one," I said. "No hate against the people who like that car, I just don't." Alder nodded.

"Okay either way, we would have to save up for one, no matter what make we want," he said. I gazed at him.

"I know," I said. "So should we start saving up to buy a car?"

"What kind of car though?"

"Maybe a Volvo?" I suggested. Alder gave me a look. "Rhyme not intentional," I added. "Of course that's just a suggestion, it doesn't mean we'll actually start saving up for that kind of car."

"I'm actually not really bothered what kind of car we save up for," Alder said,"a car is a car." I looked at him.

"So... should we start saving up?"

"I don't see why not," he replied. He put his hand out and I high fived it. "Let's start saving up for a car," he said.

"Yep! We'll need one for when we have children."

"Children?" Alder's voice was extremely quiet and his warm expression before had faded. I internally gulped. Crap. We'd never discussed this before.

".....yeah... in the future though! Not right now! I never said right now!" I gulped. "We don't have to talk about this right now!" Alder didn't answer right away.

"Sully.... what if.... I don't want children Sully... what if.... what if," Alder voice heightened on the last few words,"what if I turn into him?" I stared at him.

"I... don't want children either well I do want but I'm scared..." I admitted. "I also don't want to... turn into.... my him..." Alder gazed at me.

"Sully I know that won't happen, as far as I know none of us have touched alcohol-"

Alcohol....

Alcohol.....

Alcohol.......

The word shot through me, and I didn't hear Alder's next words. He flashed in my vision. I leapt off the couch and raced toward the guest bathroom. By the time I reached it, the scene had returned. This time my mother was thrown side ways into a table. With a yelp she fell to her knees and clutched her side where a trail of red liquid was now flowing from. She looked up, her violet-blue gaze looking up at something that terrified her. This time, I appeared to be watching the commotion from the side, probably from out of my old room. I'd told Alder about my past but I had omitted the part about the attacking. Alder didn't need to know that.

I opened my eyes, but the vision was still around me. I saw Alder by the door, his lips were moving but I was deaf to his words. I only heard my parents. I closed my eyes again and the vision returned. I felt the tears falling from my eyes. The vision ended and I opened my eyes but I was still sobbing.

"Sully," Alder's voice swam into my ears. "Breathe in and out, like this." He demonstrated by breathing in and out. I attempted to obey.

"I-I'm such a c-child," I sobbed. "A-a child." Alder gazed at me.

"You're not a child. You're my husband and I love you. Remember our wedding day? You surprised me at the after party.... I really liked that. And you're not a child. We have pasts, so does everyone else. Sure ours are more.... you know... but that doesn't mean you're a child." I didn't answer right away, preferring to let him comfort me. "I'm sorry."

"Sorry? For what?"

"For setting you off, I should've known better, I know that word triggers you. I'm sorry."

"You're forgiven," I murmured after some thought. Alder smiled weakly and gave me a light peck, rubbing his finger on my hand.

"Now let's go and do something else to take your mind off it."
