Chapter Seven
Edmund's POV
I headed up to the top of the How, where we could see the whole area from. As I got up there, I saw Cahira sitting there, holding a bow and quiver of arrows in her lap.
"You know how to shoot?" She looked up, startled, but then stood quickly when she saw me.
"Yes, I do, your majesty." I chuckled, sitting down beside where she was.
"Just call me Edmund. And have a seat. I don't really worry about the formalities." She smiled slightly, sitting back down.
"Alright. I'm just....Being forced to work for Miraz, I just got used to having to be completely formal around him." I smiled weakly.
"I'm actually glad you're here. What....what happened there that made you want to leave?" She sighed, staring at her feet, and then started talking.
"My family moved here when I was about six, so we've been here about ten years. I was forced into his service, and when they refused, he.....He killed them. Ever since, I've done whatever he's said I have to do. And when I don't do what he says, he'd have me locked in the dungeon and I wouldn't get anything to eat. He acts differently around different people." She nearly started crying, and I put a hand on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Cahira. I'm very sorry." She smiled weakly, looking off into the distance.
"The day they were killed, I made a promise. I made a promise that I wouldn't ever stop fighting. I wouldn't ever give up. That's actually what my name means. Cahira- it means warrior." I smiled again, and looked at her as she turned to face me.
"Cahira, will you fight with us? I know it's risky, and I know you might not want to, but we need every warrior, especially archers, that we can get." She smiled, standing.
"I'd be honored, King Edmund. Excuse me." She bowed halfway, and then left. I watched her leave, a small smile forming on my face. Then, I heard Sierra's voice.
"Is King Edmund smitten with someone?" She asked, a teasing smirk on her face. I felt my face growing hot, and I glared at her.
"Does it really matter? And why do you care?" She sat down next to me, smiling slightly.
"Because I care, Edmund. For so long, everyone I'd ever known, except my father, was either terrified of me, furious with me, or thought I was the most wonderful and perfect person in the world. When I lost the first man I loved and my son a few thousand years ago, I didn't have anyone who cared enough to help me. You're lucky. You have three siblings and your parents who care a lot. I had my father, and that was it." I looked at my feet, feeling my face burning with embarrassment. She has the best father ever, but still had a rough time growing up.
"I'm sorry. And are we ready to head off, and face this want-to-be king?" She smiling slightly, nodding.
"It's alright. You didn't know. And we are." I nodded, standing. This could be interesting.
Sierra's POV
I stood in the tent with Edmund as he read the letter from Peter. I wasn't paying much attention to what he was reading. I was just eyeing the two soldiers off to the side, muttering to each other. Then, something Miraz said caught my attention.
"And why should I fight him? He's just a child." I turned to him, unsheathing the knife from my leg and twirling it.
"Maybe someone who you consider a child can surprise you sometimes. I've seen that in my life. Little things can shock you beyond belief." He looked at me, and a small smirk showed up.
"Ah, the 'Great Warrior' of Narnia. Aslan's daughter. Why am I not surprised you're here? You should've been dead years ago." I smirked, leaning a little closer.
"It's hard to kill me. And if you say he's just a child, why are you unwilling to fight him?" He leaned back, watching me.
"Maybe I just don't want to fight a teenager who claims to be king." I chuckled, resheathing the knife.
"Or you're scared of him. You're scared to fight him." He slammed a hand onto the table, standing.
"I am not afraid. And you.....Tell your king that I accept his challenge." As we left, I couldn't help but smile. After training Peter for 15 years, I knew that he could easily beat Miraz. Things were going exactly as planned. We just had to beat them now.
