Chapter 7: New Faces
An hour later we were on the edge of the city. Street lights where on, but there were no cars. None at all, not even on the side of the street.
“How do people get around here?” John asked.
“They walk.” Tevan said.
“Or bike.” I said. Then some random person came speed walking up to us.
“Where are you from?” He asked quietly so only we could here, not that there was really anybody else.
“Well the way you ask that is kind of creepy Fred.” Another guy said walking towards us.
“Your casualness is creepy.” Fred muttered. The other guy stopped beside Fred.
“I'm Mark.” He said holding out his hand. I looked at it for a second before looking back up at his face. “You guys must have been through some hard times if you can't trust a hand shake.”
“Are you from inside the wall?” Fred asked in a creepy way.
“Uh...” John said stupidly before looking at me. Tevan was doing the same. Looks like I had to come up with a plan, again. I didn't talk to people much, but I did know how to get out of sticky situations.
“Fred leave them be.” Mark said. He was younger than the other guy, but older then us. “It doesn't matter where they came from they still wouldn't appreciate being pestered by some random guy before they even really got in the city.”
“I was just curious.” Fred said looking back at Mark.
“Yeah we have trust issues.” I said. Mark put his hand down.
“So much you can't even trust a handshake?” Mark asked. “You guys must be from inside that wall if you have can't trust a person with a handshake.”
“Why would you say that?” I ask.
“Because you escape the wall for only one reason.” Mark said. I slid my hand behind my back and grabbed the knife I had strapped to the backpack.
“You can't trust me with a handshake, but you trust me enough to put your hand behind your back?” Mark asked.
“Guess so.” I said undoing the snap button on the handle and making so the only thing keeping the knife from falling was my grip on it.
“Look. I know you don't trust us, but you need help if you're going to get anywhere.” Mark said. “Where are you going anyways?” Tevan and John both looked at me, and I looked back at them. We had no clue where we were going, just as long as it wasn't back inside the wall.
“You guys don't know where you going, do you?” Fred asked.
“Oh you guys are hopeless.” Mark said shaking his head at the ground. “You guys are definitely from inside the wall with your trust issues and the fact you have no clue where you're going.”
“Not to mention they came from the forest.” Fred mumbled.
“Ok, you got us.” Tevan said raising his hands up so they were level with his head before putting them back down. “We're from inside the wall.”
“I knew it!” Fred exclaimed.
“Calm down Fred, it's not that big a deal.” Mark said.
“You said it yourself: you only escape the wall for one reason!” Fred exclaimed in a whisper. He was starting to creep me out, but I kept a straight face.
“Ok Fred seriously, calm down. You're freaking them out.” Mark said gesturing towards Tevan and John. “Why is your arm still behind your back?”
“And it's the right arm too! She could be...” Fred said before getting cut off.
“Cool it Fred!” Mark yelled. I risked it and snapped the band back on the knife handle brought my arm back out in front of me.
“Why would it matter that it was my right arm?” I asked curiously.
“See, she has no clue what you're talking about.” Mark said calmly.
“Or she could be a good lair.” Fred mumbled. At this point I cracked and let my confusion show.
“I honestly have no clue what you're talking about.” I said.
“Fred, don't you have somewhere to be?” Mark asked. With that Fred turned around and left.
“Sorry, he's always a little jumpy when people come around that don't live here.” Mark said. “I seriously wonder why they let him stay out here with his mouth.”
“They?” I ask.
“Oh yeah well of course.” Mark said. “It's not just us two, or he wouldn't be alive.”
“I can see why.” John muttered.
“He's a nice guy, you just have to know him a little first.” Mark said.
“So why exactly does it matter that where from inside the wall?” I ask.
“That's not a wall you just get outside of for fun.” Mark said. “There's only one real reason people escape from the inside, and it's not because you needed a break from your life. That's what walks are for.
“Who says we needed a reason?” I asked. “There are some crazy people that do some crazy things.”
“Yeah well those “crazy people” wouldn't be able to get half way up the wall.” Mark said.
“Well I guess we are just crazier.” I say.
“Or you're different.” Mark said.
“Everybody's different in their own ways.” Tevan said.
“Yeah well I'm talking about a different kind of different.” Mark said.
“What is this different kind of different?” I ask. “Because that's the only kind of different we know.”
“Yeah.” John said. Mark smirked.
“You're lieing.” Mark said pointing to John then turned towards me. “Which means you're lieing too.”
“How do you know?” John asked as Mark and I stared at each other, waiting to see what the other one would do. He turned his head towards John.
“I know because you're normal and I can tell when a normal person is lieing, but I apparently can't tell when some ab-normal people are lieing.” He said turning his head back at me. “You are the first person I couldn't tell was lieing.”
“There's a first for everything.” I said looking at Tevan who is seemingly shocked somebody else called John bluff, which in turn made them call mine.
“I guess you're right.” Mark said. “It looks like you guys need a place to stay.”
“Well if you're like us then I guess we can trust you.” Tevan said.
“Don't worry. There's not too many other people here. Most of them are at the base which isn't even in this town.” Mark said. “And these guys won't be offended if you don't want to stay.”
“We should go then.” I said. “Or else we won't be getting much sleep.”
“You could sleep till noon for all I care.” Mark said. “A couple guys do that anyways.”
“I like the sound of that.” John said.
“Yeah. We could use some extra sleep.” I said.
“Extra?!” John asked. “I've been barely getting enough sleep.”
“How do you think I feel John?” I asked.
“Can we go now?” Mark asked.
“Yeah we should.” Tevan said.
“Then let’s go.” Mark said turning around. He led us down a dark alley. “For people with trust issues you sure do trust easy.”
“That's only because you're like us.” I said. “What's it called anyways?”
“Not quite sure I can tell you that yet.” Mark said. “We are a little protective of information. A place to stay for a little while is fine, but you need to earn the information.”
“I can understand that.” I said as we came to a door and stopped. Mark knocked on the door. The door opened to reveal yet another person.
“Hey Jake.” Mark said.
“Mark.” Jake said in response.
“We got company.” Mark said pointing his finger over his shoulder at us. Jake looked around Mark at us.
“You might want to watch Joey.” Jake said. “You herd what he said, but you know that doesn't mean he won't.”
“Yeah I'm aware of that.” Mark said. “If he does get out of hand I can handle him.”
“What happens when you're not watching?” Jake questioned.
“We'll be fine.” Tevan said.
“I'm not worried about you.” Jake said. “I'm worried about her.”
“If she made it out of the wall I'm sure she'll be fine.” Mark said. That's when I figured out what they were talking about.
“He's a drunk, isn't he?” I asked. Jake looked back around Mark and looked at me in surprise.
“He sometimes is.” Mark said.
“How did you figure that out?” Jake asked. “We left the conversation pretty vague.”
“I'm just good at figuring stuff out.” I said. My feet where starting to hurt really bad. I've been walking on them for a week, and last time I checked they were still cut up pretty bad from running barefoot in the street. They should be fine by now if I hadn't of ran on them, but still, shouldn't I be able to heal faster than normal people? Mark walked past Jake, and we fallowed not too far behind. After we got in Jake closed the door and fallowed us in. We walked down a narrow hallway with dim lighting, then into a large room. There was several couches and a couple recliners around a table. There were about five other people in the room, including Fred, who all turned to look at us when we got in the room.
“Looks like we got company.” One of them said. “I'm Hank. This is Steve, Dan, Paul, and Joey. I'm sure you've already met Fred.”
“I'm Jordan. This is Tevan and John.” I introduced pointing to each of the boys in turn. Tevan gave me a look asking what I was doing. I returned it with a look that meant what's our names going to do?
“Jordan...” Paul started. “That name sounds familiar.”
“It's a popular name.” I replied.
“Yeah true.” Paul said.
“So what is it with you guys?” Dan asked. “Are you the negotiator and the boys the beater uppers?”
“No.” I said. “I'm quite capable of landing some good blows.” A bottle slammed down on the table and a man, Joey I'm guessing, stood up.
“You sure about that?” Joey asked. Apparently he was drinking again. Once a drunk always a drunk. Words are just words until action is put behind them, and Joey clearly wasn’t good at the action part of it.
“Joey.” Mark warned.
“She says she can fight.” Joey said. “Why not let her prove it?”
“Joey!” Dan yelled in warning as Joey lumbered around the table.
“I wouldn't.” John said.
“Now you've got your little body guard to defend you.” Joey said. I snapped and took a step forward, side stepped Joey's punch, and struck the side of his neck with two fingers. Joey fell to the floor paralyzed. I didn't think that would actually work on him, being that he's different. Once he hit the floor he laid there.
“What did you do?” Jake asked.
“Paralyzed him.” I replied.
“That hurt.” Joey said. “It still does.”
“Can you teach me that?” Steve asked.
“Seriously man!?” Joey asked.
“Yeah.” Steve replied. “That trick could come in handy.”
“When does it wear off?” Joey asked calming down a little.
“In a day if I don't undo it.” I say leaning back up against the wall.
“Undo it.” Joey said. “Please.”
“Wow that got him to calm down too. He would usually be screaming something like that.” Steve said. I got up off the wall. “Not to mention he wouldn't be saying please.”
“Why should I?” I asked.
“I'll leave you guys alone if you undo whatever you did to me.” Joey bargained.
“Ok.” I said. I crouched down next to him and hit him in the spot where I did before, then got back up and went back to the wall.
“Aw man that hurts.” Joey said rubbing the side of his neck. “That's why you warned me not to, isn't it?”
“Yeah.” John said. “She has a tendency to do that. I'm not her body guard.”
“Can she even have a body guard?” Steve asked. Everybody started laughing. Once Joey stopped laughing he got up.
“I have to admit, you're pretty good kid.” Joey said looking at me.
“Thanks.” I said as somebody else came through the door. He walked into the room and looked at us. He had short, sandy colored hair.
“Guys this is Alex.” Mark introduced.
“What took you so long?” Hank asked as Alex went and walked over to a small dresser.
“That doesn't matter, but I did get a cheese wheel.” Alex said.
“Cheese wheel?” I asked.
“Yeah we have this game where if somebody brings home a cheese wheel we throw stuff we have on us until something sticks. The cheese goes to the person who threw the thing that stuck. You're welcome to join, but don't use gum.”
“That won't be a problem considering I don't chew gum.” I said. After I said that people started throwing random stuff at the cheese. Mark took out a pocket knife and turned it in his hand a couple of times.
“Don't use anything in that backpack either.” Alex shouted back at us.
“I won't.” I said. Mark unfolded the blade, and I reached behind me to get the knife strapped to my back as Mark started aiming. Quickly, I took the knife out from behind me, brought it behind my head, and threw it at the cheese. Mark dropped his hand to the side as my knife hit the cheese and stayed there.
“Dang Mark, your aim got better, and you got a better knife too.” Hank said.
“That's not mine.” Mark said. Everybody turned around. “It's hers.”
“Dang kid, you've got a good aim.” Joey said. “What did you say your name was again?”
“Jordan.” I said.
“Well Jordan,” Hank said getting up. He walked over to the cheese. He pulled my knife out and threw the cheese at me. “This is yours.”
“Thanks.” I said catching the cheese. “Can I have my knife back? I'm kind of fond of it.”
“I can see why.” Hank said. “The handle on this is cool. Where did you get it?”
“Family heirloom.” I said walking up to Steve. “Can I have it back now?”
“What if I said I was going to keep it?” Steve asked.
“I would paralyze you.” I replied.
“I was joking.” Steve said turning the blade around and handing me the handle. “I wasn't kidding about wanting to know how to paralyze people though.”
“You have to earn information.” I said.
“Oh so you're going to play that card are you?” Mark asked.
“You started it.” I commented. “All I wanted was a name.”
“Yeah well you could be a spy.” Mark said.
“Not hardly.” John said. “And I know you know that's not a lie.”
“She could have lied to you.” Mark countered.
“Yeah I would totally want to work for an organization that killed my family and put me in a cell for over two weeks.” I said putting the knife back away. “I probably would still be in that cell if it weren’t for them.”
“I didn't know.” Mark said quietly.
“We all have had family members killed.” Fred said. “They all died for the same reason.”
“It's hard to let go at first,” Alex said. “But it gets easier.”
“Most of the time anyways.” Dan mumbled.
“Dan, I thought you let your sister go a while ago.” Joey said.
“I did, but she looks like her.” Dan said. “She even has a similar personality.”
“I'm sorry.” I said. “I shouldn't have mentioned anything I just said.”
“You can't honestly expect yourself to just keep it locked inside.” Mark said.
“Why not?” I asked running my finger along the edge of the blade. “It's what I always do.”
“How can you live like that?” Hank asked.
“I just do.” I replied. “I'm not one to just spill all of her personal problems. I don't show weakness.”
“No wonder you're still alive.” Fred said quietly. The pain in my foot came back, but this time it was worse.
“Where's the bathroom?” I asked reaching behind me and putting the knife back.
“So that’s why you hand was behind your back.” Fred said. I nodded.
“Down that hall to the left.” Jake said pointing to the other hallway.
“Thanks.” I said. I walked down the hall, found the bathroom, turned the light on, and closed the door behind me and locked it before sitting on the floor and carefully taking off my shoes. My left foot had bled slightly through the gauze and onto my sock. Carefully, I took my sock off and undid the gauze wrap. My foot started bleeding again after I peeled off the gauze pad. It got me wondering what if this was all a mistake? What if I wasn't what everybody though I was? What if I was normal? No, I can't be normal. I quickly washed my foot off, re-wrapped my foot, and checked my right foot. As I expected, it was fine. All it had was a bunch of little scratches. I put my socks and shoes back on, got up, opened the door, and walked out.
“What if someone who's different like us doesn't heal?” Tevan asked. I stopped in the hall. Nobody could see me.
“If that happens, then maybe it was a mistake.” Dan said. “They might not be different like us.”
“What if they have other abilities, but they aren't healing?” Tevan asked.
“Why does this matter?” Joey asked.
“I was just curious.” Tevan said.
“In truth,” Hank said. “We really don't think you should know that. Something like that hasn't happened in a long time, and we feel it would be better if you didn't know why that happened.”
“Unless of course, you're talking about one of you guys.” Dan said. “In which case you should tell us.”
“He's not.” John said. “He was just being curious.”
“Is your curiosity getting you in trouble again Tevan?” I asked as if I didn't just hear what I just herd. I walked down the hall and into the main room.
“Not really.” Paul said. “It's just getting him to a dead end.”
“That's a first.” I said sarcastically making a few people chuckle.
“There's a bedroom down that hall to the right.” Mark said pointing to the hall I just came from. “We typically don't use it, but since you're a girl you can use it if you want.”
“What's that supposed to mean?” I ask.
“It's just that you're the only girl here. That room is available if you don't want to sleep in a room full of boys.” Mark explained.
“Thanks.” I said. “Glad to have the option.”
“Well we're not going to force you to sleep somewhere.” Hank said. “That would be harsh.”
“Are you going to eat this cheese?” Alex asked. “After all it is yours.”
“I'll take a third.” I said. “You guys can have the rest.”
“Wait, you're sharing?” Paul asked.
“Well I can't eat all of it.” I said as Alex threw me a third of the cheese which I took and split in three and gave Tevan and John a piece. We ate our cheese and talked. During the conversation I accidentally scratched myself on the edge of the table. The only other person that noticed was Mark, but neither of us really cared
