Chapter 17: The Truth
We where woken up to someone knocking on our door. Sylas got up and checked it to find Ken standing there.
“Morning guys. I was wondering if you guys wanted to come hear the truth.” Ken said looking past Sylas and at Alex and me.
“Truth about what?” I asked.
“Everything. The truth behind the wall, how super humans like us came to be, stuff like that.” Ken said.
“It's actually an interesting story. I've heard it a couple times. Not enough to tell you guys it though.” Sylas said.
“So you guys up for it?” Ken asked.
“Yeah.” I said standing up. Alex stood up as well.
“Count me in.” Alex said.
“Fallow me.” Ken said before turning and walking off with us not to far behind.
Ten minutes later we found ourselves in a somewhat large room with a bunch of people facing what kinda looked like a stage. A guy who look really old walked up to the stage. Alex found a seat on the edge of the top bleacher while Sylas and I leaned on the back wall close to the door. Ken made his way to the center of the room.
“For those of you who don't know me, or the ones who forgot my name, I'm Ben.” He introduced. “Now I'm going to tell the truth about what really happened.
“Generations ago when I was a young like most of you out there scientists started working on making ways to make people genetically perfect. Cure diseases and stuff like that. At first they started off with simpler stuff and tested it with a test group, but while some scientists where working on that, others started working on the harder stuff. Something went wrong and one night and caused a tragic accident to happen in the lab and soon the lab exploded. The explosion destroyed almost the whole town and killed just about everybody with no trace left of them. The ones that survived soon started gaining superhuman abilities like healing faster, running faster, faster response time, and other things that varied from person to person. Now some of the people closer to the epicenter of the blast where believed to have gotten hit by other chemical that didn't spread as far because they where faster, stronger, and smarter then the rest, and for some strange reason they got a strange tattoo on their left arm and there was only a few of them. Most of them died less then a week later, but we never found out why. Most believe that it was because their bodies soon rejected the modification. Most of the superhuman, that we decided to call Potentia, survived. Only one of the stronger ones, the Riaka, survived in the long run and so far to this day there has only been one known Riaka in existence at a time.
“A group of people who heard about the accident first started to spread word that these super humans where dangerous and said that they can protect them if they paid a fee to help them build a wall around a city far enough away from the destroyed city that where now blaming us of destroying. This group became the so called government of the city. After they built the wall they made an entry test that they claimed was to make sure the brightest could live on while the less fortunate would be left out in the world to be killed, but the test was really to stop any Potentia from getting in. If someone did too well on the test they where slaughtered. Some of them learned that and purposely answered some questions wrong. That's how they got in and to this day there are people trying to escape that prison before it's too late.
“In the past few years they have gotten better finding out who's a Potentia because kids wouldn't understand if they where told to act dumb. The government hoped that if they figured out before they grow up a little that there's no way they could get out. That's why less and less are getting out.” He finished. Ken hopped up onto the stage and Ben handed over the mic.
“So there you guys have it. As Ben here said less and less have been making it out, but it has come to my attention that two did make it out somewhat recently.” Ken said getting a small cheer from the group at the last part. “As a matter of fact one of them is here today and is non other then the sister of our Riaka.”
“Is that my name now?” Sylas shouted out jokingly. Some people laughed at that.
“Well it is true.” Ken said. “Anyways. Her name is Jordan. She's standing next to Sylas and they brought someone new to our place here. He's been out for a while now, but he hasn't been to HQ yet.”
“Jordan if you don't mind me asking, just how did you get out?” Ben asked leaning over to the mic. There was a mumble of agreement telling me almost everybody wanted to know as well.
“It wasn't without great sacrifice.” I answered. Soon after I realized that was a bad answer because I perked everybody's interest. They all looked at me waiting for more. Alex looked at me sympathetically because he knew it was a story I didn't like telling. Ken noticed what everybody else wanted and took his chance.
“Would you mind coming up here and telling us more? I'm sure most of us would like knowing what's going on inside the wall these days.” Ken explained. There was another mumble of agreement. He was putting me in the spotlight and I was fairly certain he knew I didn't like it there.
“There's no way your getting out of this. You'll have to tell it eventually.” Sylas mumbled so only I could hear him. “He put you in the spotlight just like he does everybody else he takes interest in. Especially if they don't like the spotlight.”
“Sounds like you speak from experience.” I mumble back.
“I do.” He answered before I started to walk down the aisle towards the stage. When I got up there Ken handed me the mic with a look on his face that said the he got me before he and Ben backed up to the side of the stage. The group waited patently while I got my thoughts together to tell them the bare minimal to satisfy them, which included not telling them I'm actually a Riaka.
“Looks like she has her brother's stage fright.” Ken said.
“It's not stage fright. I just don't like being the center of attention, just like her.” Sylas said.
“Right. Sorry I forgot. Must run in the family.” Ken said. There was a pause meaning they where done.
“When the government found out what I was they attacked and killed my parents. Maybe that's because I was the second one in the family to be superhuman, if that's the case they attacked my little brother just in case. The only one who wasn't attacked that night was me because I jumped out the window and ran. I ran because my mother told me I was different and they would be after me not to long before that. I went back the next day to find my brother laying on the floor with a pool of blood and a healing knife wound just below his rib cage. At that point I knew we needed to get out of there, but there was some delays. I ended up running into my cousin, who as it turns out is a Potentia as well, and his uncle who was part of the government group out to kill us. I ended up in a cell and my cousin and one of our friends ended up managing to convince them that they could get the information that they wanted from me, but there real goal was to bust me out. As soon as we got out we met up with my brother who I told to hide, packed a few things and started to climb the wall. Once we got to the top we where spotted and my brother was killed before we could get into the forest.” I explained. Ken didn't seem completely satisfied with this, as if he could tell I wasn't telling everything that happened, but I gave him a quick look telling him I wasn't saying anything else about this.
“Well, that's it for now. You can go do other stuff now.” Ken said after taking the mic. Everyone left the room except Sylas, Alex, Ken, Ben, and me.
“So let me get this straight.” Ben started before I could leave. “They put you in a cell just because you're a Potentia?”
“They typically try to kill us when they find out.” Ken said. Sylas stood up straight and started making his way down. Alex soon fallowed. “Why did they put you in a cell instead of kill you like the rest?”
“They wanted answers. Answers I didn't have.” I replied before starting to walk off, but Ken grabbed my left arm before I was out of reach and pulled me back. At this point I was ready to punch him in the face.
“What are you hiding?” He asked keeping his death grip on my arm. Sylas was on him in an instant, grabbing his shirt collar and getting in his face, but Ken's grip remanded. I knew if I broke free of the grip he would probably get suspicious.
“Let her go. She's one of us.” Sylas said.
“Or what?” Ken asked. “You going to kill me?”
“I just might.” Sylas said. He glanced over at me and I gave him a look telling him to let him go. No sooner then Sylas let go I whirled behind Ken pinning his arm behind his back and forcing him to let my arm go just enough so I could escape without rising suspicion and I pushed him forward slightly. Sylas then decided to punch him in the gut and put him on his knees.
“Teenagers.” Ben mumbled. “We are a dieing race, yet you still try to beat each other to a pulp. Tell me how that makes sense.”
“I just find it weird that she got put in a cell instead of slaughtered.” Ken said starting to stand up. “They could kill a little boy in cold blood, but they put her in a cell! There's something that she's not telling us.”
“Have you stopped to consider that maybe you're jumping to conclusions again?” Ben asked. “When she was in the city she was contained, but when they where escaping the situation was no longer under control. They had to be killed, but the only one who died was the boy.”
“You might be right, but I still don't think she's telling us everything. They picked the strongest to lead this group, and I intend to do just that and I need answers.” Ken said. Ben shook his head before walking to the exit.
“You're not the strongest here.” Sylas said once again grabbing the collar of Ken's shirt. I noticed Alex was still near the top of the bleachers, surprised by what just went down.
“I'm the strongest one willing to do anything for a better cause.” Ken said.
“I don't see how trying to start a war is for a better cause.” I said.
“Oh, so you let her in on that? Now why would you do that?” Ken asked. I walked up right behind Sylas to see the look on Ken's face, and much to my surprise he didn't seem scared out of his mind.
“That's none of your business. Now leave me and my sister alone.” Sylas said. Ken let out a chuckle.
“Your eyes don't affect me any longer.” Ken said. Sylas dropped Ken unexpectedly and he collapsed on the floor as Sylas turned and walked off. At this point Ben was long gone.
“Let's go.” Sylas said. I started to go after him, but soon found an arm around my neck.
“We aren't done here Sy-” He started before my elbow interrupted him by slamming into his gut. He once again was on the floor.
“Yes we are.” I said before I started walking off yet again.
“What makes you so sure?” He asked. Out of the corner of my eye I could see him lunge again. Before he could strike I turned around and grabbed his fist, surprising him.
“Because if you try anything again I will beat you to a pulp.” I said, and for once Ken seemed scared. I let his fist go and walked to the door where Sylas was waiting for me.
