Chapter 14: Preparation

I woke up a couple hours later and got up and went to open the door. Sylas didn't stop me. Turns out he was still asleep. So was everybody else. Quickly I got my bow out of my bag and went up to the roof where I hid it in a vent before going back down. I went back to my room and shut the door to freshen up. Half an hour later I found myself pacing my room, bored out of my mind. I heard a knock on the door and I practically ran to the door. Sylas was up.

“Everybody's still asleep.” He whispered.

“Let's go then. My bow is on the roof. I put it up there when I woke up a little while ago.” I explained. We headed toward the fire exit. He went first and I fallowed not too far behind. Once I got on the roof I quickly got my bow out of the vent and put it on my back. Sylas started running towards the end of the roof and I fallowed. We jumped along the rooftops until he slowed to a walk then jumped off the edge of the building to an alley. I looked down. It was a decent drop.

“Don't worry you'll be fine. It might hurt a little, but that's it.” He said noticing I stopped. I jumped. It didn't hurt that much when I hit the ground.

“See. I told you you'd be fine.” He said with a smirk. “Anything I can do you can too now.”

“Yeah, I guess so.” I said.

“Come on.” He said turning and waving his hand over his shoulder. We went to the end of the alley to a staircase that led down to a slightly rusted door. He opened and sound of music hit my ears. I took a peek inside to see a few people that looked like they would do just about anything and not really care. “Stay close.”

“Don't have to tell me twice.” I said as he stepped inside. As we walked through the room everybody seemed to know Sylas, and most of the boys glared at me in a way I didn't particularly like. One even stood up, but sat back down when Sylas gave him a warning glare. We turned down a hall and continued walked, the music fading behind us.

“You seem to have some respect around here.” I said.

“Yeah. These guys are tough, but they've heard rumors of what I'm capable of. They say they're on our side and have no problem with Potentia or Riaka, but I can see if I get upset they get a little on edge. If they knew that you were a Riaka they wouldn't try anything stupid.” He explained. “Hopefully.”

“So is this guy like the ones out there?” I ask as we stop in front of a metal door that glinted in the slight darkness.

“No.” Sylas replied. “He does get crazy sometimes, but he's not like them.”

“Oh.” I said because I had nothing else to say. He opened the door slowly. Inside there was a guy reading a comic book.

“Hey Kevin.” Sylas said as I closed the door behind me.

“Hey Sylas.” Kevin said putting his comic book and noticed me. “Who's this? Your girlfriend?”

“She's my sister.” Sylas said.

“Oh so you're still not looking for a girlfriend then?” Kevin asked jokingly. “Or can nobody stand those eyes?”

“Shut up.” Sylas said jokingly. They seemed to have a good relationship. They could joke around anyways.

“So what brings you back here?” Kevin asked. “Long time no see by the way.”

“She needs a new bow.” Sylas said.

“Oh so you didn't come for another knife?” Kevin asked still joking around.

“Like he needs a knife with those eyes.” I said joking around.

“Oh you too?” Sylas asked turning and staring at me. I stared right back.

“Look kid I don't think that's a good idea.” Kevin said. “Those eyes stare inside your soul.”

“They do not.” Sylas said not looking away. “They just creep people out.”

“Yeah you can say that.” Kevin said walking up beside our little staring contest. He slowly waved his hand in between our faces. I took that as an opportunity to change my eye color to green when Kevin's hand was blocking our eyesight from each other. Sylas blinked and for a second had a shocked face I haven't seen in a long time.

“No fair.” He said. Kevin looked right before I changed my eye color back to the normal blue-green.

“That's creepy.” Kevin said. “Does creepiness run through your family or something?”

“Not all of it.” I said.

“Anyways, about that bow...” Sylas jogged Kevin's memory of why we were here.

“Right. Come this way.” Kevin said as he turned and walked off. We fallowed him to this back room full of bows. He pulled down one that was a lot smaller than the one I had. It was shorter then my arm. “This is the latest one I have. As you can tell it's smaller, but it also has a greater pull strength for more force and distance.”

“Cool.” I said. He handed me the bow. It was also lighter than the one I had on my back.

“Try it.” He said gesturing with his hand to a spot where the wall marked with targets. There was arrows on the wall next to me. I took one and knocked it.

“So this bow has more force?” Sylas asked.

“Yeah. You might want to...” Kevin started but was cut off by the thunk of the arrow hitting the target.

“Where you about to say something about loosening the tension on the string?” I asked turning my head towards the boys who were staring at my bulls eye even though I didn't really aim.

“Yeah.” Kevin said. “Guess I was wrong. So you like it?”

“Yeah.” I said.

“Give me your old bow then. I would usually say since your bow is kind of old and big that there would be an extra charge, but you're with my buddy Sylas here. Not to mention you're his sister, but if you do want the case that lets you carry it on your back that will be extra unless you happen to a Riaka, which last time I checked it’s pretty much impossible because Sylas here is a Riaka.”

“It just so happens she is.” Sylas said. I showed Kevin the tattoo.

“Well I'll be dammed.” Kevin said.  “You two are a weird bunch aren’t you? You both have creepy eyes and are both Riaka.  Last time I checked it was almost impossible to have two Riaka at once.”

“It still is.” Sylas replied.  “It’s also strange that her mark is on her left arm.”

“Yeah isn’t that typically on the right arm?” Kevin asked.  Sylas nodded.

“How do you know so much?” I asked.

“I have my ways.” Kevin replied as we started heading for the main room.

An hour later we were on our way back to the hangout. I snuck into my room as Sylas went into the main room. After I stashed my bow in the backpack I went out into the main room to see almost everybody was asleep except for Joey, which surprised me because he's never the only one up.

“I don't get how you guys can go off of so little sleep.” Joey said.

“Maybe because we're not lazy.” I said. “Or didn't sleep that much before we found out. One of the two.”

“I'm not lazy all the time.” Joey said.

“Yeah people like us can't be lazy all the time unless they are lucky.” Sylas said. “And judging by the fact you're here you aren't that lucky.”

“This town is actually pretty laid back.” Joey said. “Not a lot of activity here. Well not any I'm involved in. It's been a long time since someone attacked like that. They must really want you dead.”

“Yeah. I can see why.” I said glancing down at my arm.

“Yeah, but it just recently happened.” Joey said. “How could they possibly of know?”

“I don't think they entirely knew about it. They were just being cautious because she's my sister.” Sylas explained. “They did know I was a Riaka. They saw the tattoo before I left.”

“Yeah. Some people related to Riaka are stronger than most Potentia, but still aren't Riaka.” Joey said.

“Guess Tevan didn't get that side of the deal.” Sylas said.

“I don't think he's closely related enough.” I said. “He's a cousin.”

“He's so cautious he could have stayed and passed as normal.” Sylas said.

“If it weren’t for his uncle.” I said.

“Let me guess, he's the one that shot you.” Sylas said.

“Yeah.” I said.

“Well there is another city that is normal enough that isn't encased in a giant wall. Some Potentia could be hiding out in there.” Joey said.

“Yeah I think I know where you're talking about.” Sylas said.

“How is it you've been everywhere, and yet you've only been outside the wall for three years?” Joey asked.

“I haven't been everywhere.” Sylas said.  “And it’s actually been seven.”

“So is there any reason why you two are up right now?” Joey asked.

“No, not really.” Sylas replied. “Guess we could test her jumping skills now that she's a Riaka.”

“Yeah, maybe she can beat me now.” Alex said sitting up.

“Oh I don't doubt that.” Sylas said.

“I'll have you know my father was a Riaka, and I am a pretty strong Potentia because of it.” Alex said getting up.

“I wasn't saying you couldn't come.” Sylas said turning around and headed towards the fire exit.

“Just don't be too offended when we leave you in the dust.” I said as I fallowed Sylas. Alex fell in line as Joey mumbled something about crazy kids.

“Do you really think that that's a good idea with that leg?” Joey asked. “She may be a Riaka and all, but from what I heard that bullet did take a decent chunk out of her leg. That's what Tevan said anyways.”

“Tevan is prone to exaggeration.” Sylas said before climbing up the latter. I fallowed soon after.

“Yeah he's also very dramatic.” Alex said before fallowing.

“You cans say that again.” I heard Joey mumble before I got on the roof. Sylas and I waited for Alex to get up on the roof, and he took off running before both feet where on the roof. I caught the hatch before it slammed back down and slowly closed it.

“Looks like we are behind.” Sylas said.

“Not for long.” I said before taking off running with Sylas close behind me.

In the end I ended up having to stop because there was no more roof tops to jump to and I didn't feel like going for a swim again. Sylas fell a couple roofs back and Alex fell several before him. I jumped off the roof, onto the street and started walking back to where the boys where. Sylas pulled out of an alley after I rounded the corner, fixing his jacket and brushing it off.

“Why'd you stop?” He asked. “You obviously didn't fall.”

“Ran out of roofs.” I said as I kept walking.

“Oh. You could have turned.” Sylas said.

“Those jumps are too easy.” I said.

“Yeah you do have a point.” Sylas said as we walked to where Alex should have been coming out of an alley by now. “Shouldn't Alex be on the street by now?”

“Yeah. I didn't think we left him that far behind.” I said. Just then someone grabbed me from behind, who I instinctively rammed in the gut with my elbow. Turns out it was Alex.

“What was that for?” He asked.

“How was I supposed to know it was you and not some stranger?” I asked in response.

“Yeah you do have a point.” Alex said. “Still, did you have to hit that hard?”

“I didn't mean to.” I said.

“Sure you didn't.” Alex said as we started walking again.

“I didn't.” I said.

“It's not her fault you're a wimp.” Sylas said.

“Oh that blow would've winded you long enough for her to run off.” Alex said giving Sylas a friendly punch on the arm.

“You underestimate me.” Sylas said.

“Yeah I might.” Alex said. “This was fun. It surprisingly doesn't suck being last.”

“Yeah since we are all so good maybe we can have a little competition next time to test how well we can fight on the run.” Sylas said.

“Man I haven't had one of those in forever.” Alex said.

“I haven't had one at all.” I said.

“The rules are simple. Get as far as you can and try not to get pushed off the rooftops. You can push everyone else off and it's not over till there's only one person on the roofs, so if you run out of roofs just turn.” Alex explained.

“Actually, you can go in any direction, not just forward.” Sylas said.

“Cool.” I said thinking of a plan as to how I was going to get the boys off the roofs next time. “So agility does come into play.”

“It can if you know how to use it.” Sylas said almost as if he was challenging me.

“We'll just have to wait and see.” I said challenging him.

“I have a feeling you two are going to target me just to see which one of you is better.” Alex commented.

“Well now that you mention it that is a pretty good idea.” I said.

“Darn I had to say something.” Alex said.

Half an hour later we were back in the hideout. Everybody was up now, and Tevan looked less then pleased that I left. Surprisingly he didn't gripe about it though. He just gave me a look of disapproval.

“Why does he think you can't handle yourself?” Sylas asked quietly, whispering in my ear. “If anything he can't handle himself.”

“I think he's just being over protective.” I whispered back.

“I don't know why.” Sylas said. I decided that this was a conversation to be had in private so I started walking towards the back hall. Sylas seemed to realize what I was doing and soon fallowed me. When we got to the roof and the trap door closed we continued our conversation.

“So I'm guessing you have some idea as to why he's over protective or something like that.” Sylas said.

“Yeah, I think it's because his uncle turned against him and he did watch Tony get shot and killed while we were escaping.” I explained. “I guess he kind of feels we need to stick together and not do anything stupid.”

“But you're with me now. I'll watch over you guys. Even John.” Sylas said.

“Tevan never trusted you.” I replied.

“He never really had any reason to, but what about you? Do you trust me?” He asked turning and looking me in the eyes.

“I trust you enough.” I replied.

“And does Tevan trust you?” He asked.

“I'm not so sure anymore.” I answered. “He thinks I'm reckless, he always had, but now he thinks I'm even more so.”

“Did he trust you before?” Sylas asked. He was trying to have his eyes affect me like it effected most people. They made people just spill information. Maybe it was so they could look away, but I didn't pay much attention to that.

“Most of the time.” I replied.

“Well then, part of him might still trust you.” Sylas said.

“I guess so.” I said.

“So there might be a way to be able to get him to trust me.” Sylas said looking away. Seemed kind of weird that he did because I didn't think he was done asking questions.

“Well maybe.” I said. “There’s a chance that he doesn't trust me enough anymore to trust the people I trust.” I answered.

“I think you can convince him.” Sylas said.

“I don't know maybe.” I replied

“You can be very persuasive sometimes.” Sylas said walking towards the edge of the roof. He sat down as I walked over.

“I guess so.” I said sitting down next to him.

“You guess?” Sylas said looking over at me. “You are the most persuasive person I know, and it's probably because of those eyes. They can be calm and relaxing sometimes while other times they can be very intimidating. Then there's the whole turning them green part.

“Yeah I don't like doing that too much. I've only done it twice in about five years.” I said. “And you’re not giving your eyes any credit here. You can seemingly make just about anybody spill information just by looking them in the eye.”

“Except you. For some reason I can't stare right into your eyes and my eyes don't do that on you.”

“Yeah well I'm seemingly an exception on a lot of things.” I replied.

“That you are.”

“I think you're right though. It would be better to leave Tevan behind. I kinda want to bring Alex though. He is strong.”

“Yeah. It would be a good idea. I still think John should stay behind with Tevan.”

“Maybe we could take Tevan to the village.”

“You seriously think that will go over smoothly? Oh we just brought you along to drop you off somewhere else.”

“Yeah true. Mark might want to come.”

“That boy has seemed to take a liking to you. I honestly think if you can convince him to stay you should. He'll end up getting himself hurt trying to protect you.”

“He just a friend.”

“Don't you see he wants more than that? He cares too much and Mark, well he has a way of manipulating emotions.”

“Are you doubting me?”

“That's not what I meant.”

“Good. I do see what you're getting at though. I should switch back to my old backpack. It should fit the bow just fine.”

I got up, turned around and started walking off.

“You also got that case.”

“Good. More room for arrows.  I might stop by that place to get some throwing knifes.”

Sylas got up and caught up to me.

“You planning on going by yourself.”

“Maybe.”

He cut in front of me and stopped me.

“I really don't think that's a good idea. What if they...” He started.

“I'll paralyze them before they land so much as a finger on me if they start something.” I said going to walk around him, but he grabbed my shoulders.

“Jordan please.” He said. His eyes softening. Was he trying to get sympathy? “I don't trust them with you alone.”

“I know you don't.” I said looking him in the eyes before slipping out of his arms. “I never said you couldn't come. I just didn't want to make it a point for you to come.”

“I'm starting to think Tevan isn't the only on that doesn't completely trust me.” He said turning around and storming off towards the hatch. He opened it and stepped in.

“Sylas...” I started before the hatch slammed shut leaving me to think about what I just did. I walked over to the air vent and leaned on it before sliding down banging my head in the process.

I heard the trap door close a little while later. I was on the opposite side of the vent so I couldn't see who it was and they probably couldn't see me.

“Jordan?” Sylas asked. I didn't reply. He started to run to the edge of the roof but stopped short and turned towards me. “Look I over reacted. I'm sorry I didn't mean it.”

“I know. So who all do you think we should take with us?” I said getting up.

“Just Alex.”

“Ok. Sounds like a plan.”

“You still want those throwing knives?”

“Yeah.”
