Chapter 11: Long Time No See
We have been here two weeks now. I've gotten used to how these guys act, but Tevan still jumps at the random screams and shouts. He isn't adjusting to well, saying what these guys want to do is crazy and I wouldn't know because this is my first time being outside my house besides school and the forest. John stayed to himself mostly and I got the feeling he felt like an outcast, but every time I go to talk to him about it he just slumps away into another corner. I wanted to help him, but I didn't know how and I defiantly don't want to talk about it in front of these people. They wouldn't understand, but I do. I used to be an outcast, the one that never went to any games, parties, anything. I only showed up in school and didn't talk much at all. I was a total outcast and John had a lot of friends and fit right in. Now I was fitting in and he was the outcast, but was I really fitting in? In my own way I didn't fit in. After all I wasn't healing the way I should be.
Everybody except Frank was up by seven thirty. We went out for a walk doing the normal crazy stuff that Tevan didn't like so much that he didn't even come this time. John did, but he hung behind us. He could of just stayed back at the hangout with Tevan.
“Want to go roof jumping again?” Mark asked.
“Sure.” Alex said. “You coming this time Jordan. After all Tevan isn't here.”
“You guys go ahead. I'll catch up.” I said.
“Ok. Don't fall” Mark said.
“Not like it matters for us.” Alex said.
“Yeah you fall on a daily basis because you push yourself too far.” Mark said.
“Yeah yeah I know I'm an idiot.” Alex said.
“Yeah try to catch me, I would advise you don't try to catch him.” Mark said pointing at Alex. “He's crazy.”
“Will do.” I said. “I'll be there in a minute.”
“Ok.” Alex said before climbing the ladder to the roof with Mark in tow. As soon as they got out of view I turned towards John.
“You ok?” I ask.
“You wouldn't know how it feels to be an outcast, so quit trying to help me with this.” He said.
“Have you already forgotten I used to be an outcast?” I ask. The leaves where stirring all around us. “In school.”
“Yeah I know, but you don't know what it feels like to have a lot of friends and loose them because you went with your best friends and then became an outcast. I know I didn't have to come, but I wanted to, and I don't regret it.” John explained.
“Then why do you act like it was a mistake and treat yourself like you're an outcast?” I ask.
“How am I not an outcast?” He asked. “You guys can jump on roofs without worrying about if you'll be ok because if you break anything it'll quickly heal. I can't, so tell me how I'm not an outcast?”
“You're not the only one how doesn't quickly heal.” I said.
“What do you mean?” He asked. “Are you not healing the way you should?”
“No I'm not.” I reply.
“Oh.” John said. “You go on I'll be fine. I'm going to head back.”
“Ok. Don't tell anybody. Tevan already knows.” I said.
“Ok I won't.” he replied before turning around and heading back. I climbed the ladder quickly and started running after Mark who I could see. Alex was out of sight, but after I ran for a minute or two I could see him.
An hour later we were heading back to the hangout. I ended up going further then Mark by one roof. Alex beat both of us, but he fell again and luckily he didn't break anything.
“I can't believe you made that jump.” Alex said.
“She almost didn't.” Mark said.
“Still, that was a good first run.” Alex said.
“Guess I'm a good jumper.” I said.
“Better then Mark at least.” Alex said and we all laughed.
“I could have made it if I had a good reason.” Mark said.
“So you let yourself get beat by a girl?” Alex asked jokingly.
“It was one roof. Get over it.” Mark said.
“Yeah he's got a point. It was only on roof and I did almost fall.” I said.
“What if you did fall?” Mark asked.
“It wouldn't really matter. She's one of us.” Alex said.
“Yes it would.” I said.
“How? Will Tevan talk your ear off?” Alex asked as we turned down the alley the hangout entrance is in. We all laughed and stopped just before Mark opened the door. There was talking when we entered. I soon picked up Tevan's voices I walked down the hall.
“How do you know her?” Tevan asked.
“I know her, you should know how. If you don't that's not my fault.” Somebody else said. The voice sounded familiar, but at the same time it didn't. I rounded the corner to see a tall teenager with black hair and from this angle his eyes look pitch black.
“Sylas?” I asked. He turned towards me.
“See, even she recognizes me.” Sylas says.
“It was the eyes.” I said. “Not very many people have black eyes nowadays.”
“And not very many people have multicolored eyes anymore. Not after the genetic mutations that they decided was a big mistake and ended the project, but it was a little too late. Not to mention what happened when they tried to destroy it.” Sylas explained.
“You know the story?” Fred said with a hint of jealousy.
“Yeah. I learned it at HQ.” Sylas said.
“Lucky.” Mark said.
“That place isn't really my type.” Sylas said.
“Wait how do you know each other?” Alex asked waving his finger in-between us. Tevan probably would have answered if he wasn't still shocked it was Sylas. His jaw was dropped in shock. Guess I wasn’t the only one who thought Sylas was long gone. “And what brings you here?”
“Well I heard somebody escaped the wall. I came to check see if it was my sister here.” Sylas explains putting his arm around my shoulder.
“She's your sister? She looks nothing like you.” Fred said completely shocked. He was right, I looked nothing like him with my light brown hair and blue-green eyes.
“Yeah the hair is from our dad. We have no clue why his eyes are black.” I explain.
“We have no clue why your eyes have green in them.” Sylas said.
“Yeah true.” I said. “Mom's where blue and dad's where brown.”
“No offense, but those eyes creep me out. It's like you're looking into people's souls with them.” Mark said. Sylas turned and stared at him in a somewhat creepy way making Mark quickly look away. Sylas and I laughed at that. It was like he hasn’t been missing for around seven years. I have to admit I missed him, even though I said I hated him for a couple years after he left. Then again that was true at that point. I was mad at him for leaving me, and taking Kayla with him.
“That's not funny.” Mark said.
“Yes it is.” Sylas said. “And if you think that's creepy you won't want to see what she can do with her eyes.”
“What can she do?” Alex asked.
“You notice how I have a slight green circle on the inside of my eyes right?” I ask.
“Yeah, what about it?” Alex asked.
“I have a feeling I don't really want to know, but I'm curious.” Mark said.
“I haven't done that in a while though. I don't know if I still can.” I said.
“You'll never know if you don't try.” Sylas says. So I try and when I open my eyes Mark flinches really badly and Alex just stares letting me know I successfully turned my eyes green.
“That's creepy.” Alex says. “How can you do that?”
“I honestly don't know.” I say making my eyes go back to their usual blue.
“They're like Hulk eyes.” Mark commented.
“Funny you refer to him considering he was called a freak also. The only difference is that was a movie, this is real life.” Sylas said.
“Guess we’re just the freaks of real life.” Alex said. All except Tevan laughed at that. Instead Tevan just made a face that seemed to ask how he could joke about that.
“Don't worry Mark I hardly ever do that. I don't like the green rim around my vision I get when I do that for a couple minutes. If I keep my eyes like that for too long everything will be tinted green even after they go back to their normal color.” I explain. “It makes me think my eyes are still green.”
“I remember the last time you did that.” Sylas said. “You asked me every five minutes if your eyes were green. You were so paranoid that mom and dad would see that and flip.”
“Good.” Mark said. “Once you think about that Sylas she was worried for a good reason. After all it is kinda creepy. Imagine you being in their shoes. Walking in the door to see her eyes are suddenly green.”
“That’s exactly how it happened.” Sylas said. “I got home one day and her eyes were green for about a minute before going back to their usual blue.”
“How long are you staying Sylas?” Joey asked. I was a little surprised to hear his voice at this hour. He typically slept at least a couple more hours.
“Since when did you get up before noon?” I asked.
“Your cousin woke me up.” Joey said. Now that made sense. I knew Joey wouldn’t be up right now without some kind of reason.
“Oh.” I said. “Sorry about him.”
“It's his fault!” Tevan said pointing at Sylas.
“I see you're still pointing fingers.” Sylas said. “You guys tell them the names yet?”
“We told them the name they needed to know.” Fred answered.
“They need to know the other one too.” Sylas replied.
“No they don't.” Fred argued.
“Fine I see there's no changing your mind and this is more your place then mine.” Sylas said dropping the subject. “One thing I'm not going to drop is you're not drinking. Especially since she's around.”
“Don't worry she made me stop drinking in a different way.” Joey said. Sylas looked at me.
“I paralyzed him.” I explained. Sylas grinned.
“Nice one.” Sylas said holding up his hand for a high five. I gave him a high five which made a loud echo through the hangout.
“I'm guessing you're both loud clappers.” Mark said.
“Yeah I know she is.” John said. “Not sure about him though.”
“Oh I can clap loud.” Sylas said. “I just don't feel like it.”
When night came we were sitting on floor around the table as usual doing crazy things. We did end up having a clapping contest. That just proves how weird we can be. Sylas and I stuck with the high five thing and when Mark said we needed to use both of or hands to be in the contest we did a double high five which was extremely loud considering we put extra force into the high five.
“That's not what I meant.” Mark said.
“Well maybe you should have been more specific.” Sylas said. “We would still beat you guys.”
“I've never seen this side of you Sylas.” Alex said. “I kind of like it.”
“Well it's because I'm happy my sister is alive.” Sylas said.
We talked for another two hours before I got up to go to the spare room. Everybody didn't want me to go, especially Sylas who was soon asking if he could sleep on the floor on the other side of the room which struck everybody as an odd way of over protection. He settled for the couch instead which didn't make Joey too happy considering he wanted to sleep on that couch. I went into the room and closed the door behind me before laying down on the bed and starting at the ceiling. I never used the blanket. I liked the cold. I couldn’t help but feel happy that at least Sylas was still alive. I realized that in some ways I looked up to him, but not as much as I looked up to Kayla. She was there for me almost every time I was feeling down, and when she wasn’t Sylas was there. They tried to be there for both Tony and I. That’s why I was so angry when they left, but I understand why they did now. They had no choice. I wasn’t mad anymore. Half an hour later I fell asleep.
