— tom was grateful for alison's understanding as she urged him to listen to cariad's single, smiling encouragingly as he put his headphones into his ears at the table in the cafe they were eating brunch at. with his heart in his throat, at 12pm exactly upon the release of cariad's newest single, he pressed play.

five minutes later, he was certain the palpitations in his chest were going to kill him. he was overwhelmed; it was clearly about him.

even without delving too deep into the lyrics, it was as clear as day.

the talk of summer romances ending sent his memories hurtling back to two summers previous where he'd thought he liked a girl and ended up turning to cariad for help, her shoulder always there to cry on when the romance turned sour.

the 'awkward secret that someone denies' — their kiss, perhaps? he may not have denied it outright, but he'd denied the way it had made him feel.

'they've all got their opinions' people thought they knew everything about the pair and always had, and now upon hearing this song tom realised what an idiot he'd been to let people's opinions and the chance of ruining years of friendship get in the way.

he'd always loved her too, fearing that their friendship would be ruined if he made that clear.

but now, as he listened to the song clearly meant for him — hell, the cover was a picture of them for fucks sake! — he felt tears prick at his eyes.

he regretted pretending their kiss meant nothing more than he'd ever regretted anything, mentally cursing his denial of his ever-growing feelings for the girl. he loved her, he always fucking had.

he sprung to his feet decidedly, knowing that he couldn't suppress his feelings anymore.

"i can't do this anymore," he choked out, exiting the cafe swiftly and quickly walking back home, leaving alison awestruck but, as was her nature, understanding.

she nodded softly to tell him it was okay as he stole a final glance in her direction, taking a sip of her tea and resting her chin in her palm as she basked in her own company.

a flirtatious yet sympathetic smile was shot her way from a tall, handsome stranger. as she smiled shyly in return, she pondered that perhaps her happiness was on its way, and with that notion in mind she was content.

tom sat poised in his lounge now, biting his nails anxiously as he waited for cariad to return home from the lunch she'd gone for with harrison. tom couldn't decide whether he wanted her to hurry up so he could confront her sooner, or for them to take a long time for the sake of the fear coursing through every vein in his body.

he loved her. he was in love with cariad. and he was finally going to do something about it, just as she had.
