Chapter 2
It had been a rough case to say the least. Two of the three missing girls had been found murdered, but the team was lucky enough to find the third missing girl just in time. The unsub had her held up in his cabin. Gideon had about talked him into letting her go, when the girl slipped as they were walking out, this set off the unsub and he aimed to kill Gideon. Luckily Morgan had made the shot, killing him before he had a chance to hurt anyone else.
By the time they finally made it back to the plane the entire team was exhausted. For the whole time they were there, the team hadn't really slept or had a break, and if they did it was only for 20 minutes at a time. That being said, Spencer had not had a chance to contact Y/n like he had promised. It wasn't uncommon however, with both of them working insane schedules. When they were away on cases, they didn't hear from one another for days on end. But Spencer had a tradition of calling Y/N before he got on the plane.
"You calling our girl?" Morgan said as he watched Spencer though the rear view mirror, as they made their way towards the airport.
"I hate to break it to you Morgan, but Y/N is my girl." Reid smiled as he hit the speed dial, number one of course.
"You wish pretty boy." Morgan teased but his smile faded when he watched the young profiler's face fall. "What is it, what's wrong Reid?"
"It went straight to voicemail." Reid said a little disheartened. Y/N always left her phone on, especially when he was away on an assignment.
"It's like 3 in the morning back at home, your girl is probably asleep. Don't worry loverboy."
Reid knew that Morgan was probably right, but there was a pit in his stomach and he had a feeling that something was wrong.
By the time they had landed, the sun was starting to rise, and the panic that Reid had hoped would have subsided was only amplified when he tried to call Y/N again and it went to voicemail again.
The entire ride back to the office Reid was bouncing his leg nervously as he kept trying to call Y/N. Something was very wrong. Morgan, who was sitting next to Reid, was also starting to get nervous. He knew Y/N, he considered her one of his closest friends, and he knew that she would never put the kid through something like this.
By the time they made it back to the office, both Reid and Morgan quickly pushed past the others. They both had the same idea, they needed to get to Garcia, she would know. She would have talked to Y/N. However the team had barely made it past the elevator when they heard the sound of a familiar voice screaming out in terror. Everyone took off sprinting towards Garica's office, guns drawn.
Hotch and Gideon had taken the lead, having to hold back both Reid and Morgan as they cautiously entered her office. They found Penelope on the floor leaning against the wall, her knees pulled up to her chest as she cried. Morgan immediately rushed to her side visually examining her, making sure she wasn't hurt. Reid on the other hand was focusing on the open box on Garcia's desk. He felt his stomach drop as he slowly went to go look in the box. Gideon pushed past him looking in it, he then quickly turned to look at Garcia.
"Penelope, who is it, what do you know?" He insisted roughly.
Hotch was the next to push past Reid looking in the box. He was taken aback for a moment before he quickly turned to look at JJ.
"We need some evidence bags and gloves." He instructed.
Everything seemed to slow as Reid finally looked in. Inside was a flash drive, and a human finger. It was a woman's finger with the nail painted a light shade of blue. But Reid's eyes landed on the engagement ring around the severed finger, one he recognized too well as it had been in his jacket pocket just days before.
Reid fell to his knees as he let out a sob. The team froze, and the room went silent as they all realized what was happening. Morgan could feel his heart shattering. Gideon was back focusing on the box on the desk, shutting off his personal emotions. Hotch however was looking towards Reid watching him break. And he himself could not help but feel slightly broken. He knew Y/N and he liked her. But more so, he liked Y/N and Spencer together. She was wonderful for him. He couldn't even begin to understand how Spencer felt. He didn't know what he would if anything happened to Haley.
"Elle, Morgan, can you take Reid and Garica into the conference room." Hotch quickly said as JJ returned with the evidence, tears filling her eyes when she saw Spencer.
"No," She gasped her hand covering her mouth.
Spencer didn't even feel arms wrap around him and help him to his feet. Everything blurred as he was ushered out of Garcia's office. He could hear people talking, and he could hear Garcia sobbing, but he wasn't there, not mentally at least . His mind was racing. The probability that Y/N was alive was so low that he couldn't even begin to hope he would see her again. Even with that thought running through his head he pulled out his phone, speed dialing her.
"Hey it's Y/N, sorry I missed your call..."
"Hey it's Y/N, sorry I missed your call..."
"Hey it's Y/N, sorry I missed..."
He just kept redialing and redialing hoping that the outcome would change.
Morgan was still holding onto Garcia as she cried into him. But he was looking across the table at Reid who was gripping onto his cellphone for dear life as he would dial a number, listen to it, then hang up and repeat the process all over again.
"Reid," Hotch said finally coming into the room. But the young profiler didn't hear him, instead he just kept trying the phone over and over again. "Reid." Hotch tried again sitting in the chair next to him, a sad look in his eyes. But still nothing, Reid's eyes were just glazed over with tears as they stared intently at the table. "Spencer." Hotch finally snapped as he grabbed the phone out of his hands.
Reid's head quickly snapped to look at him, glaring for a moment before his face softened. "Hotch I..."
"I need you to tell me everything you know." Hotch said as he set the cell phone down on the table. "When was the last time you spoke to Y/N, what happened?"
"I called her before we left for Washington. I told her about the case, she said she was getting coffee before heading to work. I told her I was going to try to call her while we were there but..." Spencer breathed his voice cracking. "God I should have tried to call her. When the case was done, I tried to call her. It's our tradition, we always call each other when we are on our way home. But she didn't answer. She always answers. And I knew, I knew something was wrong but..."
"Hey, hey Reid look at me." Hotch said as he watched tears fall onto the table. As Spencer looked him in the eyes, Hotch could see how broken the kid was.
"I proposed." His voice cracked more tears streaming down his face. "I had proposed to her, right before we went to Washington. That day we left we had come here to tell you all. I was going to marry her Hotch. And now..." He let out another quiet sob.
"Oh Spence..." He heard a voice from behind him say as arms wrapped around him. For a moment his heart fluttered thinking it was Y/N but as he opened his eyes he found the familiar form of JJ hugging him tightly.
"Reid, we don't know anything for sure yet, Gideon is looking at that flashdrive right now. We are going to figure out what is going on. And when we do, we are going to be here for you. All of us, ok?" Hotch said as he patted him on the back.
Gideon suddenly burst into the room, and the whole team looked back at him intently, eyes wide, terrified of what he was going to say.
"Y/N is alive."
