Chapter 9 - Nikki
If I thought the test shoot with Evan was crackling with chemistry, it was nothing compared to the intensity of seeing him with his top off, oiled up and holding a pair of adorable fluffy kittens.
Could the sight of a hot man with animals make your ovaries explode, because I was pretty sure that was what mine were doing.
All the testing me and teasing me at every opportunity had created a sexual tension like nothing I had ever experienced before and keeping the cool professional look on my face was near impossible.
I had worked with hot people before. It was kind of a given that the work I did involved photographing men and women in all sorts of stages of undress. I had thought myself immune, at least until him.
That body, combined with a surprisingly considerate personality and effortless charm. It was easy to see why women were queuing up just for a night with the man.
Why did he have to be so damn nice? Holding doors and bringing me a coffee to the shoot? Those things shouldn't make my heart flutter, but they did. Was the bar really that low?
He lifted one of the kittens up to his face, and it darted forward to lick his nose. The genuine laughter that broke out of him instantly triggered my photographer's brain, and I started snapping away furiously.
Still chuckling, he cradled both cats to his chest. Never had I wanted to be a kitten quite as much as I did then.
"How has no one adopted these little guys yet?" Evan crooned.
Somehow, even when he wasn't trying to make me want him, it was working. Oh, this was bad. This was very bad.
I had promised Claire no more men until I learnt to love myself a little more. I had also agreed to let her vet them to reduce the chance of encountering awful men, but honestly, I wasn't sure how she thought she would manage that.
It was easy to judge the men and their red flags once they appeared, but no one starts a relationship by sharing all their flaws. How did she think she was going to weed them out ahead of time?
"They've had a bit of interest, but we always find black cats a little harder to re-home." The rescue worker explained, reminding me that we were not alone and I needed to keep my libido in check.
Just a few more minutes and I'd move onto the next person in his team. All I needed to do was get to the end of the day and I'd probably never see them again.
"I can't understand why. These are the cutest fucking things I've ever seen." Evan laughed. "Hey Nikki, you want cats, right?" He asked, holding them out to me and giving what could only be described as puppy dog eyes.
I snapped another picture, capturing the moment. It wasn't right for the calendar, but maybe the rescue could use it to help find them a home, I reasoned.
"Now is not the right time for me to get pets, but maybe one day." I replied after he added a pitiful whine to his begging.
Evan sighed, "I'm convinced this photoshoot is an excuse to get my top off and make me adopt some cats."
"You didn't take much convincing about the t-shirt and I doubt you'd take much more for the cats." I sniggered.
Evan's gaze shot to mine. "Ah, so you do have a sense of humour underneath that very sexy but professional dress."
My cheeks flushed, eyes shooting to the rescue worker who was busying herself with something on her phone and trying desperately to pretend she wasn't listening.
"You promised to be on your best behaviour." I hissed.
"Oh babe, I'd kill to show you my best behaviour." He drawled, stroking the kitten that appeared to be falling asleep in the crook of his arm.
Oh this was bad. This was so so bad!
I didn't go for the bad boys. Never played with the players.
Drew had always made me feel safe, comfortable even. He was exactly the type of man everyone expected me to be with on paper.
But Evan? He felt like standing on the edge of a cliff, a thrill with a hint of danger that made my heart pound. Was this why people preferred the bad boys? I think I finally understood.
The door opened with a click, and a head appeared round the frame.
"Are you almost done with this one? The next player is here for photos." Jarred's assistant asked with a smile.
He was totally oblivious to the moment he was interrupting and my breath came out of me in a rush. "Yes, we are done. Send the next guy in." I replied quickly.
Evan looked me up and down, and I could feel the heat of his gaze moving through every inch of me. A slow smile spread across his face before he turned to give the kittens back to the rescue.
Then he marched up to me and offered a hand to shake. Confused and totally thrown off kilter by his nearness, I let my camera drop to hand on its strap as I accepted it on autopilot.
As his warm hand enveloped mine, he used the contact to pull me closer. "Gorgeous, we are not even close to done." He purred.
He smelt like sweat and the baby oil he had been ordered to lather his body in.
I opened my mouth to reply, but nothing came out and something about my expression made him chuckle.
"See you soon Nikki." He grinned, before reaching round me to grab his t-shirt off the table and sauntering out.
The moment he was gone, I sagged back against the table, wincing in embarrassment when it groaned slightly under my weight.
Just get to the end of the day, I reminded myself. I'd probably never see him after that.
"Fucking hell girl. You have more restraint than me." The rescue worker laughed, fanning herself, "If that had been me, and I had even anywhere near the chemistry you both do, I would have been climbing that sexy man beast like a tree."
