Chapter 2 ☀︎
"Snap out of it!" I was hit on the head by a pencil. I groaned and turned to my right to see Sasha nagging at me.
"You don't have to be so aggressive about it!" I hissed at her.
"You've ignored my entire conversation with Connie! How could you let this happen?" Sasha whined pointing to Connie who was eating a rice krispie treat in front of me.
"Why is he? Oh." I acknowledged the situation and felt bad. "Connie, why did you steal Sasha's food?"
"She stole my lunch last week!" Connie frowned. "This is payback!"
"Guys, come on now." I placed my hands in front of them. "Are you really going to let food get in the way of your friendship? Of our friendship?"
They both stood quiet like they were genuinely thinking, it was cut short by Sasha ripping the treat from Connie's hand and shoving it down her mouth.
"Sasha!" Me and Connie jolted up.
She had no remorse, she finished up the treat and shrugged her shoulders.
"Alright, it's finally 8:45! Jeez, all of you seem not to be dressed for the winter." Our teacher came in and closed the door.
I looked down at the sweater I still wore, I really liked it. I didn't mind fitting in with the other girls and I enjoyed wearing it, I think I want to get to know more about Levi.
"Did you do the homework?" Connie whispered towards us.
"Nope," I replied softly and turned to Sasha who shook her head as well.
"Why don't you guys ever pay attention!" Connie frowned as our teacher started calling out attendance.
"Did you do it?" I asked.
"No," Connie replied making us facepalm.
We quickly took out our math homework sheets and tried to get it done before the teacher noticed us. I never really understood math equations I didn't hate them but I just didn't understand them, I guess that's why I always get angry doing them.
"I hate this stupid question," I cursed filling out the sheet.
"It's not so hard but I don't want to do it," Sasha groaned as the teacher called her name. "I'm here!"
Like how am I supposed to know what negative fifty plus thirty- five and then subtracted by positive 24?
I know I should've paid attention in class but I just can't understand it, I tried to ask for help before but the teacher won't help me in the slightest. She just tells me "Figure it out", or in the middle of a test, she'll ask me what I think it means. How the hell am I supposed to know? That's why I'm asking!
I managed to finish the paper and when she called for the homework I brought it up to the basket. The rest of the class should run smoothly, right?
"Venus, can you come up here?" I heard the teacher call out making me groan. "The rest of the class, start on chapter ten of the book we've been reading!"
I walked up there fiddling my hands together and sat on the seat next to hers, usually used for private conversations yet we remained in the same room as the others. I hated it.
"I see you rushed your homework again, is there anything going on at home? Why is it always rushed? And all the answers are wrong again," She spoke softly showing me the sheet.
"Nothing's going on at home, I just have a hard time understanding the questions," I mumbled staring at the floor.
"Well, I told you that you can ask me questions." She replied pointing at the first question. "We covered this last week, how is it that you don't understand it? Everyone else is doing good."
Sting.
That stung, I hated when she compared me to the rest of her students because it just showed I was too slow to be in her class. I wanted to leave.
"Well, Ms. Long-"
"There's no excuse for this laziness if you're telling me nothing is happening at home. You're just lazy," She sighed grabbing a red marker and placing a big zero on my homework. "I already made a small note on it, bring this back home to your parents and they need to sign it saying they understand you're failing math."
"Ms. Long please don't do this," I pleaded. "I can't be failing, I am trying-"
"Then show it." She shot me a stern look.
I stood up and took the paper from her and walked back to my desk, slouching back in my chair.
"Psst!" I heard Sasha whisper to me.
"What?" I turned to her with a frown.
"I'll tell Connie to prank Ms. Long for ya!" She smiled at me. "Cheer up, it's not the end of the world."
"It's the end of the world for me, she gave me a zero and told me to get my parents to sign it." I threw my head back.
"Because you're stupid," Behind me, a voice crawled making me quickly straighten up.
Oh no. It was her.
Annie. I didn't like her, she was cold mean, and selfish. She always picked on me for some reason and it mostly happened when she saw my grades were bad.
"Instead of paying attention to the class, you spend your time scribbling in your notebook like a fucking kid." She continued. "Of course, I would imagine you'd be failing this class."
I shook my head and ignored her, Sasha just gave her the death glare and Connie was too immersed in his reading to notice what was going on. There have been a couple of times where Annie liked to push me around but now I didn't know whether she'd take it too far.
"Leave me alone," I grumbled paying attention to my book, that's when I felt a kick on the back of my legs.
She kicked me.
"I heard you're walking home today, the first time and it'll be the last I'm guessing." She whispered so only I could hear it.
I was nervous and scared, she wasn't going to hurt me again right? I'm terrified.
I needed to make sure I saw Erwin after school and stick alongside him, he could fight her off!
"Or you could just leave her alone," Another voice interrupted.
I turned around to see a girl sitting next to Annie with short brown hair and freckles.
"Leave me alone, Ymir." Annie cursed at her before turning to me. "The hell are you looking at me for?"
"Nothing," I shook my head and glanced at Ymir who shot me a warming smile which I returned before indulging in the book in front of me.
As time went on and I went through all my classes I couldn't help but still feel a rush of panic inside me when school was done. Would Annie be waiting for me around the corridors? Outside? Sidewalk?
I needed to find my brother.
