Chapter 1

I walked down what seemed like the only exit from the court, the Angel that sat in the left most throne accompanying me.

I had learnt that his name was Adriel. His name meant 'God's helper' and apparently he had five sons. Like he said before, he was tasked (along with the other two) to decide who deserves to go Heaven, Hell or Space. He told me it was very rare to have someone that lived neither good nor bad. Not knowing anything, I decided to believe him.

He walked me down a long path. As we walked, I tried to see how Heaven really looked like but all I could see was a bright white, yellow light.

"You aren't in Heaven yet, Newcomer." Adriel explained. "We are going to the Angel training grounds. There you will meet your master and begin your training."

My head shot in his direction. "I'm meeting God?"

He chuckled. "No, though I suppose he is everyone's master, I am talking about the Angel who will teach you to be one yourself."

I returned my head to the bright light. Adriel had taken off the hood of his dark cloak, which I had earlier thought was his skin. He still had his golden mask on, though.

"Why do you wear that cloak if your an Angel?" I asked.

I assumed that he was smirking behind the mask. "We need to appear neutral. Obviously we are looking for those who deserve Heaven, but there is always the chance that a person who deserves Hell will come. And when such a person comes, we invoke fear and send him to Hell."

I cocked an eyebrow. "So the cloak is to bring the hellish side out? To make you appear dark before throwing a person in hell?"

He nodded. "Exactly."

"Who's training me?" I asked.

"Like I said before, your namesake." He answered before falling silent.

Eventually, we reached the peak of a hill that overlooked a valley. Dead in its center, a bunch of temples, stood proud. Giant birds, no Angels, soared over, in and out of the buildings. People, maybe a hundred at least, walked and trained. I could hear fires burning, waters rushing.

"What powers?" Suddenly slipped out. Adriel looked at me. "What powers do Angels have?"

He sighed as we picked our way down the hill. "Many differ. It depends on the job your given. Working in the gardens, bringing children to parents, granting miracles, etc. Each has its unique power and the higher ranking you are, the stronger you will be. Though your power is also up to you."

We reached the temple-like buildings. But the temples were more like that, Temples. Some were Greek style, some Roman, some Arabian. I thought that was weird. Shouldn't God want everyone under his religion? Then it occurred to me that he wanted everyone that came to his realm to be comfortable.

People from all over came to Heaven. They weren't bound by religions, so it was rather considerate the way the setup was here.

As Adriel led me through the miniature city, Angels stopped and gawked at me. I assumed that there weren't any new Angels for the last what? Century or so? Probably.

I was paying so much attention on my gawkers; I didn't notice Adriel had stopped. I crashed into his back though he didn't budge.

"Joshua, meet your new student." Adriel spoke to someone. At first I thought he was talking to me but then I realized that he said student. I came out from behind Adriel.

In front of us stood a tall, tanned man. He had a neatly trimmed, brown beard. He had windswept hair that had been pushed to the side. He wore a simple shirt and simple pants, rags really. Though somehow they looked good on him. He had simple brown eyes.

He eyed me. I took back what I had just said. His eyes were anything but simple. They seemed old, scarred as if he had seen too much. As if he had lived to long.

He stuck out his hand. "My name is Joshua and I'll, apparently, be your mentor."

I eyed him myself and shook his hand. "Sorry but I thought Joshua wasn't a common name."

He didn't seem to find my attempt at breaking the tension funny. Instead, he just tightened his grip.

"It shouldn't be. It was my name first after all."

My mind went blank. "What does that mean?"

He sneered. "This kid is hopeless. I am thee Joshua. The one that God trusted."
