I. FOR THE COMPANY

UNPREDICTABLE
I. FOR THE COMPANY
"I JUST EXPLAINED WHO YOU
WERE AND WHAT YOU'VE DONE
FOR THE COMPANY."

HEAVY RAIN belted down onto the city of New York, flooding the roads and gutters. Many ran for shelter, or they were prepared already with an umbrella. Some unlucky souls were drenched by water because of a nearby car driving through a puddle in the road.

Emery Ellwood wasn't one of those people luckily. It had been raining for the past few days, but this was the heaviest that it had been so far. The brunette enjoyed the rain on some days, but today she wasn't.

She was in a rush to get to work, a coffee tray in her hand filled with four coffees, while the other hand held up the umbrella to stop herself from getting drenched in rain. She was wearing her usual black dress pants, high heels, dress shirt and her jacket. Her hair was tied up in a high pony tail, with her side bangs hanging out a little bit, whilst she wore no make up.

The stop at the coffee shop had been a little longer than anticipated, which meant she'd only have a few minutes to get to work instead of the usual fifteen. She rushed down the wet sidewalk, careful not to slip over, and into the building that was Ellwood Corporation when the doorman opened the door for her.

"Thank you, Anderson." Emery breathed.

"You're most welcome, Ms Ellwood," replied Anderson. "You're a bit later today? Big line up at Starbucks?"

"Like you wouldn't believe."

She let out a small breath of relief when she walked inside, packing away her umbrella whilst she made her way over to the elevator. The receptionist greeted her with a smile to which she reciprocated with her own, pressing the button for the 38th floor.

It took her up the floors within seconds, and she found herself making her way through the 38th floor. It was awfully busy. People rushing back and forth like they usually would on a Monday morning, but for some reason, today was different.

The brunette smiled at her co-workers as they greeted her when she made her way past them. She reached her desk, placing the coffee tray down onto her desk easily. She picked up her coffee and placed it down on her desk, before picking up two and handing them out to two other co-workers.

One was Lainey Graham, an editor, who Emery happened to grow up with as a kid. The two of them were best friends, and had been for the longest time. Their parents were best friends when they were little also, which bonded the two of them together.

Lainey span around in her chair when she heard the sound of Emery's high heels hitting the ground. Looking up, she found the brunette with her coffee in the grip of her hand. She let out a breath of relief, grinning widely at the sight of the coffee.

"Oh thank heavens. I've been dying for a coffee since I started this morning. Thanks Em," said Lainey.

Emery chuckled. "No worries Lain. Why's it so busy?"

"I'm not exactly sure. A few stories have come through, I don't know about anything major. Sorry."

Emery just waved her off as she walked over to Edward's desk. Edward was a technician who helped out with everything to do with computers. He was sort of a nerd, but he was amusing and loveable at other times.

Edward was in the midst of spinning his chair around to talk to Lainey, when Emery appeared from behind him.

"Hey Lain- AH! Emery! God damnit! It is too early in the morning to be getting heart attacks! Don't do that!" He exclaimed, seconds after jumping in his chair.

Emery barked out a laugh at him, handing him his coffee just a few seconds later. He gratefully took it from her hands and took a sip, moaning in delight at the taste.

"Honestly, I'm not even sorry. Sometimes you need the scare," said Emery.

Edward just glared up at her playfully. She flicked him off as she walked away, then sticking her fingers up in a heart shape above her head when the technician yelled out a "thank you" for the coffee.

Emery made her way to her desk, where she grabbed the last coffee from her desk. Surprisingly, the barista listened to her request of making it as hot as possible so it wouldn't go cold before she finished the other errands before getting around to handing it out, and it made her smile. At least someone listened.

Coming across the large mahogany door, that was surprisingly closed. As she had been taught by her grandfather, knock before entering, it was a sign of respect. Axel yelled out a "come in", which notified Emery that she was now allowed to enter the office.

She pushed the door open with her right hand, carefully closing it behind her. She then made her way over to her grandfather's desk, where she placed the coffee down in his respected place. The top right corner, where it was easy to grab, but not easy to knock over.

"Good morning Pa."

Emery greeted him with a kiss on the cheek, removing his jacket from the back of his chair and hanging it up on the hook on the wall behind his desk.

"Good morning darling. How are you this morning?" Axel replied.

"I'm well thank you, and yourself?"

"I'm swell, actually. I took your grandmother out to the beach for the weekend. She loved it."

Emery smiled at him. "I'm glad. Is there anything important needed to be done straight away?"

Axel shook his head. "Not today. But, I'd like you to meet a family friend of mine. Manuel Mendes' son, Shawn Mendes."

Emery turned to the two chairs that were placed opposite to Axel's desk, for meetings and such. And it seems, that he was in the midst of one. She hadn't even noticed the other person in the room.

"Oh, I apologise sincerely Pa. I didn't even realise that you were in a meeting. I can leave if you'd like." Emery said.

"It's quite alright, Emery. We were almost finished anyway."

Emery turned to face the person that her grandfather had been in a meeting with. It was a man who looked to be her age. He was curly haired, brown eyed, and by the looks of his body style, he looked like he worked out. He was wearing a black dress shirt, with black dress pants and a black leather jacket to match with his black dress shoes.

Oh my, Emery thought.

"Hi, I'm Emery Ellwood. Pleasure to meet you."

"It's nice to meet you too Emery. I've heard so much about you." smiled Shawn.

Emery wanted to bite her finger at the sight of the smile that consumed his face. She shook his hand, which happened to be awfully smooth and warm. Odd.

"Have you?" questioned Emery. "Pa, have you been spilling stories about me again?"

Emery turned to her grandfather with a small smile. Axel just let out a laugh at his granddaughter, shaking his head in denial.

"No, no. He just asked about the picture hanging up on the wall. I just explained who you were and what you have done for the company." explained Axel.

"That's okay then," laughed Emery. "I better get started on my work."

Axel nodded as she walked around to him. She pressed a kiss to his cheek before she went to leave the room. She bid a goodbye to Shawn, who smiled in response before he turned back to Axel.

Emery exited the office, closing the door behind her. She made her way over to her desk where she took a seat and grabbed her coffee from its resting place on her desk. She took a sip, groaning in delight. She definitely needed that.

Emery booted her computer up, getting started on her work as soon as it loaded. She was in the midst of completing a important document, when the whole room went absolutely quiet within seconds of being extremely loud. Emery looked up from her computer, finding her grandfather walking over to her with Shawn by his side.

She let out a shaky breath, looking down at her computer again to finish what she was working on. She didn't let the fact that her grandfather and Shawn were walking over, distract her from completing her work.

"Emery, darling, would you mind walking Shawn out for me? I have another meeting I must attend ASAP." explained Axel.

Emery gave a short to her grandfather, who then shook Shawn's hand before walking away. The entire floor was absolutely silent, watching the interaction between both Shawn and Emery, while Emery was quickly saving the document to her computer.

She put the computer to sleep, before rising from her seat. She went to grab her jacket from the back of her chair, but Shawn had already done so and was holding it out to her. She flushed slightly, pushing her chair in before sliding her arms into the jacket.

Her eyes locked with Lainey's, who was making a gesture with her fingers, one circle shaped and the other penetrating the circle. While Edward was sitting on Lainey's desk, making a jerking fist with one hand. Emery stuck her finger up at them with a glare, while both Edward and Lainey started laughing to themselves.

Emery then looked up at Shawn, noticing the extreme height difference between the two of them. For other people, it would be intimidating, but for Emery, it wasn't even that. She was a fierce woman in her own defence, and she wouldn't not take a chance to stand up for what she loves.

"Thank you. Right this way," Emery gestured for him to walk, but he objected against it.

"Ladies first," said Shawn.

He gestured for her to go first, smiling gently at the secretary. Emery nodded, making her way past him, Shawn following shortly behind her. He caught up to her when they made it to the hallway that led to the elevator.

"I wasn't expecting you to be so quiet."

Emery looked up at Shawn with a confused glance, not really expecting that to come out of his mouth.

"I'm not usually. It's because I barely know you. If we were close friends, it'd be a different story. But I apologise if I come off as rude. I'm not one for small talk."

Shawn nodded his head at her in complete understanding. "I understand. I'm the same."

Emery just nodded her head, not exactly knowing what she was supposed to say to that. She just kept quiet, keeping her head down as they stood in the elevator while it descended.

"How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? I mean, you don't have to answer, but you look really young."

Emery let out a laugh. "I'm almost 26, yourself?"

That made Shawn smile. "29 in August."

Emery nodded yet again. "I'm guessing you're not from here?"

Shawn shook his head. "No, I'm from Toronto."

Emery's eyes lit up at the mention of Toronto. She had always wanted to visit Toronto since she was a kid, but her parents wouldn't allow her to travel. They were a bit strict like that.

"I've always wanted to visit Toronto."

Shawn grinned. "It's a beautiful city. I recommend it."

"Many people have. I wasn't really allowed to travel when I was a kid. I haven't been outside of New York City."

"You haven't- your grandfather is a multimillionaire, but you've never travelled?"

Emery shook her head. "Like I said, my parents were strict. They didn't like the net worth that our family had. They tried to keep me away from it, but I wanted to learn more. So I moved in with my grandfather."

Shawn nodded his head. "My sister didn't like the money either. Neither did my mum. I guess that's where she got it from. We ended up in an agreement with the money side of things though."

Emery just gave a short nod, making her way out of the building. Shawn strolled beside her, pulling her keys out of his pocket, pressing the unlock button. A car beeped and the lights flashed. Emery noticed it was a black Jeep Wrangler.

They must've had a strange deal if he only drove a Jeep around, Emery thought.

"It was nice meeting you, Mendes."

"It was nice meeting you too, Ellwood."

Shawn climbed into his car as Emery stood on the sidewalk. He turned the engine over, smiling at her.

"See you next week."

"See you next week."

Emery was confused as to what he meant. Why would she be seeing him next week? Unless he had another meeting scheduled with her grandfather. But the reason as to why she would see him next week wouldn't make her happy at all.
