Raiden

All I did was hijack a school computer to open up to some 'disturbing' images for the freshman class. Now I'm stuck doing community service... without wifi.

I swing a trash bag over my shoulder and follow the rest of the group. A bunch of messed up kids that are all forced to work together as punishment for some dumb thing they did. It's shocking to find the football star, James Andrew, present at the scene. He gets away with everything. His girlfriend is with us, too, and they're obviously talking quietly. The rest of the group seems mostly silent.

We walk quietly into some kind of room. The doors slam shut behind us. I turn to look at them but don't remove my headphones. I'm not even listening to music. I can't hear anything though, and that's kinda nice. Noise canceling. I can see some kids screaming. Everyone is in a panic. One kid falls to his knees in some dramatic expression.

"Uh, what's going on?" I ask, removing my beautiful headphones.

"I-I'm going to d-d-die..." one kid says.

"Nobody dies on my watch. I say we just murder James and get out of here." A girl, pretty I might add, glares at jock-boy James.

"What did I ever do?!" He growls.

"James." His girlfriend puts a hand on his shoulder.

"This is all a publicity stunt for his football team. Well, you got us! Haha, very funny James! Very funny! Now let us out!" Pretty girl looks really mad. I decide not to care, but I continue to watch, just to see how it plays out.

"Why would I lock myself up too? Are you stupid or something?"

"I get straight A's actually, and I've figured out your plan. You're the eyes on the floor! You report back to all your football friends from here and they prank us. I'm not stupid. I know you're behind it."

James lunges for the girl, but his girlfriend holds him back. "Millie, stop." She looks almost pleading towards the pretty girl.

"Not until he lets us out!" The pretty girl, Millie, was stubborn.

"I don't know how to let you out!! I'm trapped too!"

"Maybe he's not lying." A ginger kid, Daniel, says with a shrug.

"So you're defending him too??"

"I never said that; I just don't think we should get all upset over spilled milk." He points to the obviously fake carton of spilled milk on the floor. Lame.

"Don't compare this to spilled milk! People could die down here if he doesn't let us out!"

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry to spoil the mood. You know, like spoiled milk..? No...? Okay, I'll stop." One girl smiles a little. Daniel doesn't seem to notice.

"I don't understand any of this," I say, trying to catch someone's attention. Nobody seems to notice me so I put back on my headphones. "Okay, I'll just put my headphones on again then." I push my way through the small crowd and make my way to the closest corner.

People start to walk away soon. I also leave the crowded room. We have a whole new world down here. Might as well explore it. I don't explore. I go to the first dark, empty room I see and I sit in there on my phone.

At first, it's hard to get stuff working, but my wifi hotspot comes on and makes it easier. I play some game called Medieval Online. It's crap but it's better than nothing. I can't seem to post any messages but I can't tell if my wifi sucks or the chat spammer is blocking my stuff. I turn on some upbeat music, find, and kill the chat spammer many times. It's refreshing.

Time passes. I keep murdering people when I feel a tap on my shoulder. I pull my headphones off and look up to see Ashlynn standing over me. I barely know her, but she looks kinda scared and I know her well enough to know she doesn't get scared.

"Raiden...?" She asks.

then I notice the whole group behind her. "What's going on...?"

She takes a deep breath. "Somebody just died."

I glance down at my phone quickly. "oh... sorry, was that one of you?" how did they figure out my wifi password...?

"What do you F****** think?!" This guy named Cadmus says.

"Chill out, dude. I said sorry." I reply.

"...you really don't care that someone just died...?" James' girlfriend asks.

"Why would I? If you don't want to die, don't spam the chat." I say with a shrug. Everyone looks at me like I have the plague. then I notice my phone screen turning red. "Crap!" I desperately try to stop my avatar from dying. "Now you guys got me killed, too! Thanks a lot!" Ashlynn grabs my hand and I stumble after her as she drags me away from the room.

"This. Is. Serious." Her expression is cold as she lets go of me in a different room.

The room smells familiar. I'd know the smell anywhere, blood. My eyes travel down to where the dead body of some guy I don't know is laying. "Holy S*** you were for real!"

"Yeah." Her eyes scan the dead body. Her expression doesn't warm up at all.

"I thought one of you guys guessed my wifi password and died in-game..."

"Really...?"

"Yeah..."

Ashlynn sighs. She looks over the body once more before going over some crying girl in the corner.

I do my best to regain my composure. It's been a while since I saw a dead body. After a little time, I look up at the group. Everyone looks mortified, everyone except Daniel. Daniel is smiling. His expression is calm. He seems to be helping people relax.

I look up as Ashlynn leaves the crying girl to walk back over to me.  "Is she okay?" I ask, shooting a look in the girl's direction.

"She'll be fine. She's just scared, you know, because of the dead body lying in the middle of the room." I begin to nod then, out of nowhere, I'm being shoved into the other room. Ashlynn stands in front of me, slamming the door behind us.

"Woah... what's going on here...?" I ask, trying to get away from her. The dead body is the only thing on my mind. She follows me across the room.

"There's a killer in this house, and I'm going to find out who it is. Are you willing to help me or no?" She looks into my eyes with a burning passion.

"Um... uh sure, I mean, why not... I mean, I don't want anyone else to die... I mean, yes I'll help."

"I need you to promise me you're not involved in the killing."

"I swear..." She doesn't look convinced. "I swear on my wifi hotspot."

"Are you sure?" She steps even closer. Our arms almost brush, but I take another step back.

"Yes," I say, maintaining eye contact.

Her expression remains cold. I try to look as sincere as I can, and she finally relaxes. Her lips form a soft smile, and she pats me on the back. "Cool, welcome to the team!"

"Uh, Yeah," I say.

"If you notice anything suspicious, tell me, okay?" She's practically a different person.

"Okay," I find myself forming a small smile, too. Her personality change wasn't expected.

"Oh! Don't tell anyone about this either. Things could end badly if you do."

"Yeah, I know, I won't tell anyone."

"Cool." She gives me a big thumbs up and then leaves the room.

I run my hand through my hair; my nerves have finally kicked in. I just stand in the room breathing for a moment. If she had been the killer, I would've died. I scan the room once more before walking out after Ashlynn. I pause to look at the now-alone dead body. A part of me wishes I'd at least known his name. His story is over now, all I can do is hope he is the final victim.
