Chapter 8: A Date
I sit in mister Niki's classroom, listening as he goes on and on about the perfect way to stencil a face.
Today is now Monday, September 11th. Two days after I witnessed three people attempt to rob a bank before being thwarted by MidKnight.
You might be wondering how I exactly managed to get out of there after all the action was over?
Well, let's just say I snuck out before the cops surrounded the building. Then I oh-so inconspicuously made my way back to the apartment building, rode the elevator to the top and joined the crowd of onlookers.
Sure Zoey and Zack asked me what took so long. I simply told them the elevator got stuck for a couple minutes and I didn't feel the need to call anyone.
Sure I got a few strange looks from them, but it was the perfect cover story none the least....
"Alright, I've got an assignment I expect to be done by Wednesday morning." Mr. Niki instructs, a sound of protest following right after. "That's two days from now for those of you who can't count."
He individually points at everyone in class, giving everyone either a one or a two.
I get a one, Zoey getting a two.
"If you got a number two," He gives a dry stare back at a couple students who let a laugh slip out. "Hold it together boys." He demands, continuing on. "Then look to your right. If you got a one, look to your left. The person you look at, is your partner for the rest of this semester."
Zoey deflates, obviously upset she won't be getting me as a partner. I grimace. Which means - I look to my left, Dravins' bored posture meeting my gaze.
I'm stuck with him. For a whole semester.
I lean my head back, wondering why the universe hates me so much. "Your assignment it to draw each other's face. And I don't mean a cartoon drawing." He stares specifically over at someone in the back. "I want real life details here." He continues, flipping through another newspaper. "If you and your partner can't schedule a get together to complete this assignment before Wednesday, let me know and I'll see what I can do." He dismisses with.
The bell rings, everyone immediately gathering up their stuff while they happily jabber on about when they're meeting up to do the assignment.
This is just peachy. Real peachy.
I look back to my left, knowing I might as well get this over with. "So, when are we doing this?" I question him, placing my stuff back in my backpack.
He stands up, quickly glancing over at me. "How about never." He rudely states, brushing by me as he heads out the door.
My eye twitches as I stare after him, anger surely turning my cheeks red.
Okay. That's it. No more doing things the nice way. I refuse to do anymore assignments by myself.
I sling my backpack up over my shoulder, waving bye to Zoey who's busy talking to her partner about arrangements.
Lucky her.
She gives me a quick wave, a sympathetic smile on her lips.
Alright Mr. Grump. Where'd you go?
My eyes land on his retreating back just up the hall, my feet moving faster in a attempt to catch him without actually running.
I come up behind him. "Hey, we didn't make a plan for when we're meeting up to do this assignment." I remind him, keeping my voice light.
He looks back at me, annoyance right on the corner of his face. "Yeah, because we're not." He deadpans, still walking.
I let a irritated breath out, making my mind up. I reach my right hand out, firmly grabbing his left arm - just above his wrist.
He immediately reacts by jerking his arm away like I burned him, his feet stopping as he turns to face me.
People walk obliviously by us, only some looking at us with mild interest.
I stare up at his stoney face, his nostrils flaring like he just ran ten miles. I keep my face neutral, folding my arms across my chest.
"Look, I've been stuck doing all the assignments by myself this past week. And I'm honestly fed up with it." I tell him, knowing he knows what I'm talking about. "I'm done with the whole 'by myself' thing. If you can't meet up before Wednesday - a whole two days away, then I'll just tell Mr. Niki you weren't available." I slyly suggest, raising an eyebrow.
He stares at me a couple more seconds before letting a heavy breath out through his nose in defeat. "Tomorrow, at the old baseball field." He dully states, already turning to continue up the hall.
Well, that went well.
*Time Skip - lunch*
"No way. You actually said that?" Zoey stares at me wide eyed in astonishment, Zack looking at me with only little interest.
I'd just finished telling them how I dealt with Mr. Grumpy earlier when he refused to meet and do the assignment.
And Zoey apparently thinks it's some omen or something.
"I just can't believe it." She mumbles under her breath, biting off a ketchup covered French fry.
"And you're meeting where exactly?" She questions, looking confused.
I dip my own French fry in some ketchup, chewing it up before I answer. "At a baseball field I know." I tell them, still keeping the whole 'secret' old ballpark under wraps.
She raises an eyebrow. "That's kinda spotty." Her eyes suddenly widen again. "But kinda romantic in a way." She sighs.
Now I raise an eyebrow, Zack looking slightly sick over in his seat. "Ooh!" Zoey grabs my arm from across the table, staring at me. "What if you two suddenly start making out under some apple tree while you're in the middle of drawing each other's faces, then -" I cut her off.
"Woah, woah. Hold up Zoey." I hold my hands up in a timeout gesture. "Where in the world would you get that crazy idea?" I let a dark chuckle out, leaning back as I cross my arms.
"Um, her messed up brain obviously." Zack mumbles, Zoey immediately throwing a French fry at his face.
"He hates me, and I'm honestly not too fond of that arrogant jerk either." I savagely take another bite from a French fry, recrossing my arms.
Zoey gives me a sidelong glance. "Uh huh." She sets her elbow on the table. "Well, they say haters are attracted to each other. Right Zack."
Zack gives her a puzzled look. "They do?" He's immediately elbowed in the side, and he quickly changes his answer. "Oh yeah, definitely." He gives Zoey a triumphant smile.
She rolls her eyes, preparing to say something else when a voice interrupts her...yet again.
I look over to my right, spotting Aaron standing there with a food tray in his hands. He's wearing a forest green polo shirt, and a pair of form fitting jeans......Because I definitely just had to narrate that.
"Um, hello." Zoey gives a small wave, her eyes alight with surprise. Zack makes a face, looking back down at his food.
"Sorry if I'm interrupting anything, but I was wondering if I could maybe sit with you guys?" He asks, his voice steady.
Zack looks up at him. "Actually you are interrupting something. Now -" Zoey jabs him in the side, throwing him a glance before giving Aaron a large smile.
"Oh no, you're fine. Take a seat." She pats the seat beside her, meaning I'm on the other side of him.
He gives us a blinding smile, setting his tray down before sitting.
Zack looks back down at his food. "What happened to your friends over at the popular table?" He mumbles just loud enough for everyone to hear.
I raise an eyebrow over at Zack, curious as to why he's suddenly acting like this.
Aaron doesn't seem effected by the question in the least bit. "Oh you know. New kid trying out all the different groups." He takes a sip of water from his water bottle.
His eyes land on me. "Seems I don't belong with the 'popular' kids." He gives me a small smile, leaning back in his seat.
Ooookay.
"Well, we're not much. But you're welcome over here anytime." Zoey elaborates, staring dreamily over at him.
"Thank you." He sincerely says, picking up his sandwich to eat.
Five minutes goes by, consisting of Aaron telling us stories about his life over in California, and Zoey laughing at each small thing he says while Zack glares across the table at him.
These two I tell ya.
"So wait. You were a surfer?" Zoey excitedly questions after Aaron said something about surfing.
Aaron nods, swallowing his last bite. "Oh yeah. Anytime I wasn't busy I was out there surfing the waves, completely surrounded by water." His eyes drift off, a ghost of a smile on his lips.
"There isn't anything in the whole world more peaceful than that feeling of freedom." He sighs, coming back to the present.
"You must miss it then?" I question, tilting my head to the side.
He nods. "Yeah, I do. The water here isn't anything like back home." He gives a wry smile, leaning back in his seat.
His eyes suddenly flicker to the left as he catches sight of something, my own eyes moving over on their own accord.
Dravin's just stood up from his isolated spot over in the corner, throwing his backpack over his shoulder before he quickly heads out one of the exit doors.
My brows furrow, a curious feeling sizzling in my gut.
What's he doing? He hasn't done that before....well, that I'm aware of.
"So what's up with that guy?" Aaron motions over to the now closing door, eyes curious.
Zack seems to sit straighter in his seat, Zoey pursing her lips. "You know, that's like the second time I've been asked that in less than two weeks." She gathers up her trash.
"Sorry. I was curious." Aaron gathers his own trash up. "He's in my last class of the day and I haven't even met him yet." He makes a face. "It's almost like he tries to avoid everyone."
The bell rings.
Zoey nods. "Yup. That's him alright." She swings her legs, making the seat rotate with her movements. "He's Dravin Smith." She hops off her stool, gathering her tray as we do the same.
"Join us tomorrow and I'll tell you what I know. Which I guess Heavyn could tell you seeing as I've already told her the same thing." She waves in goodbye, already skipping towards the trashcans.
Zack also gives a wave, eying Aaron before he too walks off.
I shrug, walking towards the trashcans with my own tray, Aaron close behind. We both walk out into the semi-busy halls, our backpacks on our shoulders.
"Hey, Heavyn." I look over at him, our feet still moving. "So uh, I was wondering if you'd like to go out and have supper with me after school is done?" He abruptly questions, running a hand through his hair.
I raise an eyebrow up at him, my feet pausing. We face each other, people walking past undaunted. "You mean like a....date?" I ask, trying to keep myself calm.
I mean, I did just get asked out by a really, really cute guy. One that I kinda...like.
How could I not be a little nervous? This would actually be my first date I'd ever been on. I know, really surprising.
"Yes a date." He nods, seeming like he likes the idea. "I know this great pizza place. We could walk there after school, work up a appetite. Then I could walk you home afterwards." He looks down at me, eyes hopeful.
I start walking forward, grasping my backpack trap a little tighter.
That'd mean I'd miss my daily-trail-Dravin trip. But after earlier, I kinda don't care anymore.
I look back up at him while we're walking. "Alright, I'm looking forward to it." I walk ahead of him, looking back. "I'll meet up with you by the exit doors after class." I give him a wave, turning back around.
Wow. I'm actually going on a date.
*Time Skip - 3:30 P.M.*
"I'm so jealous." Zoey holds my arm tighter as we walk down the hallway, Zack a couple steps behind us. "You're actually going out with one of the hottest guys here. And not only that, but your also working on a assignment with one of the other hot guys here!" Zoey practically squeals.
I spot Aaron leaning against the wall up by the exit doors, Zoey spotting him seconds later.
"Ooh, there he is." She tugs on my arm. "Have fun. But not too much fun now." She gives me a sly look, stepping back to join Zack.
I suddenly feel underdressed in my simple jean shorts and dark blue shirt. Is my hair even presentable?
Aaron smiles as his eyes land on me, his hand coming up in a small wave. I stop beside him, waving bye to Zack and Zoey as they walk past.
I shake my head in humor as Zoey gives me a wink before giving Aaron a quick smile.
He waves hello to them, his attention solely on me.
He holds his elbow out in a old gesture. "Shall we get going?" She questions, raising an eyebrow.
I nod, tucking my arm through his elbow. "Yes, I believe we should." I give him a smile, laughter on the edge of my lips.
We walk through the doors, finding ourselves outside. People stand around the curb, either waiting for a ride or just standing around because they want to.
I unconsciously find myself looking around for Dravin, only to see no sign of him anywhere.
We take a left, heading down the street.
Forty minutes later, we stand in front of a small, elaborate Pizza Hut.
I give Aaron a sidelong glance. "So this is your great pizza place huh?" I playfully ask, raising my eyebrows.
He smiles. "What? Pizza Hut is delicious." He jokingly combats, opening the door for me to walk through.
Just one of the many ways I'm learning that he's a true gentleman.
We walk up to the lady behind the counter, Aaron explaining that we need a table for two.
She leads us over to a corner booth, the restaurant not busy at all. I take a seat on one side of the booth, Aaron on the other. After she takes our drink orders, I look around.
It looks like your typical Pizza Hut.
Red booths line the walls all around, tables set up around the middle. The enclosed room all the way to the right is where the kitchen is, delicious smells wafting out from inside.
"So what type of pizza do you like?" Aaron questions, looking over the menu.
"Just plain old cheese." I tell him, looking over my own menu. He pauses, looking up at me with a smile. "Good thing. Cause that's my favorite too."
I raise an incredulous eyebrow. "Seriously? Usually people think I'm crazy for just liking cheese." I ramble, eyes wide.
He laughs, the sound light and hearty. "Yeah, I get that a lot too." He stares at me so hard I feel myself blush, my eyes lowering to my lap.
The waiter comes back with our drinks, setting them down before asking for our order.
"Just a medium hand tossed cheese pizza." Aaron tells her, handing her his menu. She slowly takes it, giving him a large, flirty smile.
Geez, and she's like in her late twenties.
Aaron completely ignores her, looking back over at me. I hand her mine, and she takes it. A bit harsher then what I would consider friendly.
She gives me a glare Aaron doesn't see before turning on her heels, swaying her hips as she walks away.
I roll my eyes, taking a sip from my Pepsi.
"Soooo." Aaron drawls out. "Just out of the blue, what's your favorite movie?" He questions.
I swallow my mouthful of Pepsi. "Uh, well I actually have a lot." I cross my feet underneath the table. "I like the old classic movies, the VHS ones." I tilt my head back, thinking. "Let's see, there was Tarzan, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, and a whole bunch more."
I smile. "But one of my absolute favorites was probably Toy Story." I let a sigh out, remembering all the fun evenings I had watching that. Not a care in the world.
Ah, to be young again.
He seems a bit taken aback. "And I thought no one even remembered the classics." He gives a wry shake of his head. "But I guess not." He stares at me again, almost like he's trying to read me.
We're interrupted as our waitress comes back, the pizza surprisingly in her hands. She sets it down in front of us, the smell making my stomach rumble.
She walks away without really saying anything, disappearing in the back.
She didn't poison it did she?
Aaron sets a slice of cheese pizza on my plate, getting one for himself. "Bon appetite." He playfully wiggles his eyebrows, biting into his slice.
I'm momentarily distracted when I catch someone talking on the tv that's positioned twenty feet to my left.
"Last night around 1 a.m. MidKnight saved a bus full of college students from crashing into the Hudson River when a Celestial decided to cause chaos -"
"Now that's crazy." I look over towards Aaron at the sound of his voice, only to see him staring over at the tv with distaste.
"What?" I ask, unsure if I missed something or not.
He shakes his head, leaning back. "Oh you know, all that." He points at the tv. "Everything." He elaborates.
"It is crazy." I agree, taking a bite of my pizza.
"What do you think about this MidKnight anyway?" He questions, honestly sounding like he genuinely want to know my opinion.
I swallow, dabbing my lips with my napkin. "He seems like he really does care about making sure people are safe. Which I guess is the most important part." I shrug. "But I honestly think people shouldn't hide behind masks - or in his case, hoods and helmets. I get that they're trying to keep their loved ones safe, I mean it's in all the movies."
I throw my hand up. "Save the world, keep your identity secret so your enemies can't use them against you."
"The government offered to build a special task force with all willing Celestials, even agreeing to keep their loved ones safe. That way they could all work together to bring down all the evil Celestials out there."
"It would've helped a lot of people who are now dead because of choices that could of been altered if they all would've just agreed to it."
I shake my head. "I think the world would be better off if people didn't hide who they really are." I state, feeling like it's the truth.
He raises an eyebrow, studying me. "Do you honestly believe that, Heavyn?" He stares me in the eye. His serious eyes a dark, soft brown.
I furrow my eyebrows together.
Great. Now he's got me rethinking my whole life's story.
"But anyway. What about you, what do you think?" I switch it over to him, setting my elbows on the table as I set my chin on them.
He looks thoughtful for a minute. "I think he's waiting for something." He seriously states.
He doesn't add anything else to his comment. Instead he busies himself with eating another slice.
Thirty minutes goes by in a flash, the atmosphere having gone back to the easygoing one we started with.
I dig into my backpack, looking for my wallet before a hand on my arm stops me. "I'm paying." He tells me.
I'm about to say something when he beats me to it. "No, sorry. But when I asked if you wanted to go out, I meant that included all the fees." He smiles, pulling out his wallet.
He places a twenty dollar bill in the large folder book they have, setting a ten on the table for the tip.
Well, someone's got money. But I suppose having a lawyer for a father could do that.
We stand up, heading for the door. I give him my address, then we head down the street.
Forty more minutes goes by, and I find myself walking down my now familiar street.
I glance down at my watch: 6:25 P.M. Wow. Time really does fly when you're having fun.
My eyes land on a specific person that's walking up the street a ways down, Aaron's eyes also finding him.
Dravin walks up the street in his usual attire, his head angled down to the ground, hands tucked into his pockets as he walks with that small stoop.
"Hey, isn't that....?" He trails off.
I nod my head. "Yeah, Dravin Smith."
Wonder what he's been up to? It's later than when he usually gets back. Don't tell me he actually went and did something different on the one day I took off.
He stops in front of his building, about twenty yards from us as we continue our walking.
He seems to look our way for a quick second before smoothly opening his door and going inside.
Huh....
We stop a few feet from my door.
"So I had fun today." Aaron says, inching closer to me.
My heart seems to be beating faster in my chest then the other day when I almost died. My hands clammy.
I look up into his handsome face. "Yeah, me too." I tell him.
"I hope we can do it again sometime soon?" His voice comes out quiet, breathless almost. My heart immediately jumps in my chest as I realize his eyes are staring down at my lips.
He leans down, and I automatically lean up. My eyes close on their own accord, everything around me dissolving for a split second.
Everything suddenly comes crumbling down as a annoying voice hits my ears.
"Ooh, Heavyn's got a boyfriend!"
I jerk back, our faces having been only mere inches apart. Aaron doing the same from surprise.
My cheeks flame as I realize I almost just kissed someone.....well, it want just anyone. It was Aaron. But you get the point.
Aaron also looks a little pink in the cheeks, and I find a hint of disappointment deep in his eyes.
He's disappointed. That he didn't get to kiss....me?
I suddenly feel like doing one of those obnoxiously high pitched squeals.
What in the world is happening to me?
"Um, well. I-I guess I'll be going." Aaron stutters out, looking all flustered which only helps to make him all the more cuter.
"Yeah. Uh, night Aaron." I step back, giving him a timid smile.
He smiles back. "Goodnight Heavyn." He gives me one last lingering glance. Then he starts up the street.
I let a deep sigh out, feeling light as air.
Suddenly remembering the little intrusion we had, my head jerks to the left. My eyes landing on a very grossed out Michael.
I give him a sickly sweet smile before switching it to a 'you're going to die' glare.
He gives a yelp, booking it up the stairs.
I run after him, only revenge on my mind now.
