Chapter 59 - The Disappointment

Cedar was impatiently waiting for her test result back. She tried really hard this time and so she was hoping to make her parents proud.

Professor McGonagall walked over and handed her the paper, sighing softly before she walked off.

Cedar looked at her paper and froze... She'd failed. Again.

"Next time." Her friend who sat next to her nodded.

"Yeah... Yeah, next time."

"Don't worry." She shrugged.

"I'll try not to." Cedar sighed.

"You all may go." McGonagall told the class, however she nodded for Cedar to come over.

Cedar bit the inside of her cheek and walked over to McGonagall's desk.

"Have a seat, Miss Weasley."

Cedar did as she was instructed but didn't look McGonagall in the eye. She knew she'd disappointed her too.

"You know... Your mother wasn't the best at certain subjects either. She struggled too." McGonagall sighed,"Is there anything I can do to try and help you? Maybe some extra tutoring? What exactly is troubling you?"

"I don't know what's wrong with me, I tried really hard this time.." Cedar shook her head,"I practiced and I studied but when I look at the pages... Nothing makes sense."

McGonagall nodded slowly,"Maybe you could attend some extra classes?"

"What's the point? Nothing works." Cedar crossed her arms.

"All we need to do is try."

"All I've done is try and nothing works."

"What subjects do you really like?"

"I like... Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology."

"And how do you do in those classes?" McGonagall hummed.

"I think I do okay." Cedar nodded slowly.

"Maybe there's something we can do where your exams and tests mainly prioritise those subjects?" She suggested.

"I'd like that." Cedar nodded slowly.

"I'll see what I can do." McGonagall nodded,"You can go now."

Cedar nodded slowly and stood up, leaving the classroom. After walking down the hall, she noticed her father walking down the same way. Cedar tried to turn and go a different way, she didn't want to see him right now.

"Ceddie." Neville ran to catch her.

Cedar stopped and turned, it was no use.

"Oh- Hey dad."

"How was that test with McGonagall?"

"It was fine."

"What did tou get?"

"60."

"Hey! That's not too bad." He smiled.

"I told you I'm getting better." Cedar hummed,"But now I need to go see Nixie."

"Okay, come see me later." Neville nodded.

"Of course." Cedar quickly skipped away.

"Cedar!" Trixie ran up to her.

"Hi Trixie." Cedar smiled.

"Julie was telling me that Theo got 85 on the new test. What did you get?"

"60." Cedar answered, she didn't like lying but it was better than being a disappointment.

"Oh! That's better than I got. Me got 48, but it's okay."

"Wanna go get some snacks?" Cedar asked.

"Yes please." She smiled.

Cedar smiled softly and began walking towards the great hall. She needed alone time but she'd be fine for now.

"What snacks should we get?"

"Hm... Sweet things."

"Like cake?"

"Yeah, because we tried really hard on our tests."

"Oh! And some cookies!" Trixie jumped.

"Of course." Cedar chuckled.

"And maybe some apples."

"Ooh, maybe."

"Why don't we just have a feast?" Trixie smiled.

"If that's what you want."

"What would you like?"

"I'm not sure, I'm just hungry." Cedar smiled.

"We can grab some picky bits."

"Yeah."

"Okay! Let's go." Trixie ran ahead.

Cedar sighed and followed after her.

"Finally." Frank sighed as they got off the train.

"There's mum." Phoenix pointed.

"Oh no." Cedar covered her face so she couldn't be seen.

"How was school you three?" Erica asked, walking over to them.

"Fine. I want my bed." Frank crossed his arms.

"Well, we're going home now, bud." Erica assured him,"Come on."

Cedar quickly ran ahead of her siblings and mum, going to the car.

"Be careful near the road." Phoenix called after her.

"Yeah!" Cedar waved.

Erica shook her head as she reached the car, getting into the driver's side. Cedar got in the back of the car, it was unusual of her. She always wanted to be at the front.

"Ced, is something up?" Erica looked at her though the mirror.

"Nope. Just- Feel not well."

"I see.." Erica nodded slowly, Cedar was probably the worst liar in the family.

"Might go for a nap." Cedar put her head down.

"I'll check on you at home."

"Mhm." Cedar mumbled.

Erica sighed and kept driving. What could be wrong? There was obviously something.

"You haven't told her yet?" Frank turned to Cedar.

"Shh-"

"Told me what?" Erica asked slowly.

"Nothing." Cedar put her hood up.

"Ced, we'll talk at home okay?" Erica shook her head.

"Yeah.." Cedar mumbled.

Erica walked into the living room and sat on the couch,"Ced?"

Cedar closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep on the armchair.

"Hun, I'm not mad at you. Please, just tell me what's wrong." Erica sighed.

Cedar mentally cursed before she opened her eyes and looked at her mother,"Promise you won't be mad?"

"Look, I promise."

Cedar hesitated,"I failed my tests... Again."

"Is that what's gotten you so upset?" Erica walked over to the armchair, crouching beside it.

Cedar nodded slowly,"I'm a disappointment."

"No- No, honey. You're not a disappointment." Erica held Cedars cheek.

"No- I am because I'm really bad at this."

"But Ced, you're really good at other things." Erica stroked her hair,"Your dad's been telling me that you're getting better at Herbology."

"That's only one subject."

"So? You don't need to be good at lots of subjects for me to be proud of you."

"But- Matteo doesn't even try and he gets better scores than me."

"You're not Matteo, you don't need to be Matteo."

"I want to be good." Cedar sighed.

"Just because you're not as smart as someone else doesn't mean you aren't good, Ced." Erica shook her head.

"I'm sorry I'm not good enough, mum.." Cedar looked down.

"Ced, you listen to me. You are perfect and loved just the way you are." Erica hugged her,"You don't need to be smart, or strong or anything like that, I'll always love you."

"I love you too, mum." Cedar hugged her back.

"Now you have to promise me something."

"What?"

"Try not to be so hard on yourself, okay?"

"I'll try my best.." Cedar nodded slowly.

"Good girl." Erica kissed her forehead.

"I'm sorry." Cedar leaned into her chest.

"You don't need to be sorry, sunshine." Erica rubbed her shoulder.

"Will dad be home soon?"

"He will, honey."

"I miss him." Cedar looked up at her.

"I know, but he's on his way."

"Good." She nodded and pulled away.

Erica gave her a small smile before she sat down, waiting for Neville. After a few hours, the front door opened and Neville walked in.

"Dad." Cedar looked up at him.

"Hi sweetie." Neville hummed.

"Someone's had a bit of a rough day." Erica told him.

"The train home is always tiring for me- Oh, you mean Cedar." Neville whispered.

Erica nodded and patted Cedar's back.

"What's wrong?" Neville walked over and crouched down.

"I lied dad, I failed my tests again.." Cedar looked away.

"Well, that's not bad." Neville assured her.

"But I let you down."

"No you didn't." He smiled,"You're doing great in my class."

"But what about the other classes?"

"Those don't matter, you get to choose the subjects you like later on in the year." He nodded.

Cedar hugged onto him,"I love you, dad."

"I love you too, Ceddie."

Cedar leaned into his shoulder,"Thanks.."

"How about we order take out?"

"Really?"

"I'll pay, my treat." Neville nodded, looking at Erica.

"Well? What do you want?" Erica asked.

"Chinese. I'm starving!" Frank shouted from the top of the stairs.

"Thanks for the input, son." Erica sighed.

"Chicken balls!" Frank added.

"We know."

"Maybe some rice!"

"Frank, you get the same thing each time. I know what you like."

"Do you though?" Frank walked down the stairs.

"Yes, you get the chicken balls with fried rice but you're picky and don't like the sauce they have so you get ketchup from the kitchen." Erica turned to him.

"Okay... Maybe you do." Frank muttered.

"Told you I'm not as stupid as I look."

"Debatable." Frank shrugged.

"I should've seen it coming."

Cedar got up and walked over to Frank.

"How did telling them go?" Frank put his arm around her.

"It went good." She hugged him.

"No shouting? No arguments like I said?"

"Just like you said."

"Exactly." Frank rubbed her arm.

"You're always right." Cedar smiled softly.
