24 - Brothers Will Always Be There

So, the Winchester part of this chapter was a request from a friend, added some Novak brother stuff too to fill the chapter...although the Novak thing was just for a bit of fun, I don't even know why I did that :P

If anyone else has something specific they want to happen, you're welcome to tell me and I'll work it in :)

Dean looked over to where Sam was lying on the couch watching Doctor Who. It was weird, seeing his twelve year old mind again. He was more immature, quite a bit dumber and just generally acted different.

It was now Friday, and there had been no progress in Sam's condition. He mostly just sat around watching Doctor Who or Sherlock.

"Sam, you should at least try to remember something," Dean said. "Binge watching shows isn't going to help."

"But you don't know what will help Dean," Sam said. "So what else should I do?"

"We could go out places, places that we've been in the last three years."

"Eh."

"My god I forgot how lazy you were."

"You mean I'm not lazy anymore?"

"Nope. You're a complete nerd. Who actually cares about school."

"If we go on a road trip will you let me talk to Gabe?"

"Fine."

Sam smiled and got up from the couch, turning off the Tv. Except he miscalculated the distance he had to walk again and hit his knee of the Tv cabinet. "Stupid long legs," he grumbled as he rubbed his knee. "Since when was I even taller than you?"

"Since you suck," Dean said. "Bitch."

"Jerk."

~~

Gabriel walked back into the house with a bag full of things he had just bought. He ran upstairs with the bag and then sat in his room, planning how he was going to do this.

"Gabriel?"

He looked up and saw Cas standing in the doorway. Cas looked...sad.

"Cassie? What's up?"

"Dean's being weird."

"What do you mean?"

"He's just being really distant. We've barely talked all week, he hasn't even being coming to school."

"You can't really blame him, what with Sam and everything."

"Yeah but..." Cas sighed. "It just feels weird, not seeing him everyday."

"Wow. Really? Cas it's okay not to see him everyday."

Cas just rolled his eyes and laid down on Gabe's bed. "I miss him."

"Then go over there now, I'm sure they won't mind."

"I just did...Sam and Dean went on a road trip. He didn't even mention this to me."

Gabe winced. "Don't worry Cas. He's just being brotherly and shit."

"Language."

Gabe rolled his eyes, and then Balthazar walked into the room. "You guys look moapy," he said. They both just shrugged. "Well then, why don't we go have some fun?"

"Balthazar your idea of fun includes getting drunk and smashing things," Cas pointed out.

"And?" Gabe said. "Let's do it."

"Gabe you're underage."

"Who cares?"

Cas sighed but agreed with them.

Dean drove the Impala out of town, just generally driving around places Sam might find familiar. They had Dean's music playing quite loudly, which Sam immediately complained about.

"Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole," Dean had replied with.

"You need more recent music Dean," Sam muttered. "Seriously."

"What would you know about recent?" Dean asked, smirking. Sam glared at him.

"Even music from three years ago is better than this."

"Yeah but you have no taste in music."

"Yeah I do!"

"No Sammy, you really don't."

Sam rolled his eyes.

There was a peaceful silence for a while before Sam spoke again.

"Hey Dean."

"Yeah?"

"What happens if I don't get all my memories back?"

Dean thought before replying. "Well then you just won't have all your memories back. We'll make new memories."

"Yeah but...memories make someone who they are," Sam said sadly.

"We'll get you back Sammy, I promise," Dean said. "And if we can't, then we'll remake all your memories to bring back the person you were. And if that doesn't work, then you can be whoever you want to be. You're not broken Sam, it's not something that's life ruining."

(My god the irony of that sentence...if you read my other book you'll understand)

Sam smiled slightly. "Thanks Dean."

"Anytime Sammy."

"Oh by the way, you totally made that a chick flick moment."

"Shut up no I didn't."

"Yeah you totally did."

"Nope."

"Yep."

"Nope."

"Yep."

"I can kick you out of this car and leave you here you know."

Sam stayed silent after that.

Meanwhile in the Novak residence.

"If anyone asks, you aren't our kids," Chuck said as he watched the four siblings stand around the table of shots.

Luci had joined the three, coz you know, Luci.

"Wow Dad, so loving," Balthazar said. "Don't worry, we won't do much damage to the world."

"Speak for yourself," Luci said, picking up one of the shots.

"Cheers guys," Gabe said, clinking his against Luci's.

"Gabriel why are you taking part in this?" Chuck asked.

"Because I need a break," Gabe said.

"Yeah, but you're like...I don't know, how old are you?"

"Wow Balthazar's right, you are so loving."

Chuck shrugged and walked back over to his laptop. "Don't get caught by the cops."

"Can't guarantee anything," Luci said.

And then, to explain what happened next in one sentence, they got drunk as hell.

~~

When Dean stopped the car, it was nighttime. Sam looked out the window to see an empty field.

"Where are we Dean?" he asked.

"Somewhere you might remember," Dean said. He reached into the back of the Impala and pulled something out, then walked out into the empty field.

"What would I remember here?" Sam asked. Dean just smiled at the memory as he put the box down on the ground.

"Fourth of July," he said. "Two years ago? Yeah two, you were thirteen."

"That's still weird to me, saying I was thirteen when I feel twelve."

"Not for long Sammy, we'll get the memories back."

Dean held something out to Sam, and Sam took it. "Fireworks?"

"Yep." Dean pulled out his lighter and lit it. Sam smiled and held it up, and watched as it shot into the sky. Dean watched and then lit his own, letting two rounds of fireworks shoot into the sky.

Sam was smiling brightly when the fireworks stopped, and then ran over to the box Dean had placed on the ground. "I'm not going to question where you got these."

Dean chuckled and threw him the lighter, which Sam caught with a look of surprise.

"How did I catch that? Why did you give it to me?"

"Shut up and light the damn fireworks."

Sam smiled and did as Dean said, lighting the fireworks one by one and watching them fly into the sky.

Dean watched happily as Sam watched the fireworks with the same wonder and happiness as he had two years ago. Then frowned slightly when he remember why they were here, but didn't say anything to Sam.

As Sam lit the last firework, he went to stand beside Dean. They watched as it went off and then everything went dark again.

"You didn't do it right, the last firework was supposed to be blue not red."

"Hey these were hard enough to get as it wa—wait you remember?"

"Course I do," Sam said, smiling. "You stole the fireworks and we came out here because Dad was out on a work trip so we couldn't do anything with him."

Dean smiled brightly at his younger brother. "Did you remember anything else?"

"Maybe up until around when I turned 14? I think that's when it is. I feel like my fourteen year old self now."

"Wait but you're fifteen."

"Am I? And I'm this tall? Wow growth spurt."

"Shut up. That means you've almost remembered everything."

"Still nothing about Gabe yet."

"Wow you don't even know him and you're obsessed with him."

"Like you can talk, you and Cassie?"

Dean was silent for a moment. "You used Gabriel's nickname again. That's weird."

Sam just shrugged, and wrapped his arms around himself. "It's cold out here, can we find a place to stay the night?"

"Yeah sure," Dean said, and they walked back over to the Impala.

~~

Meanwhile...the Novak's were off on some very interesting adventures.

"CASSIE! WHERE'S LUCI?"

"Uhhh...he was running down the street naked last I checked."

"Dude why were you checking that...ARE YOU CHEATING ON DEAN? WITH YOUR BROTHER?! WOAH CAS WHY?!"

"And I thought I was the lightweight," Cas muttered. They were at the school somehow...and Balthazar was smashing things. Gabriel was still being his usual self despite being somewhat drunk (not a lot, Chuck hadn't let him), and was setting up pranks.

Gabe stood back and looked at his masterpiece. "Perfect," he said as he looked at the stack of tables and chairs blocking the entrance to the school.

"Gabe," Cas said, stumbling as he walked over to him. "How are we going to get out?"

"Through a window. Duhhh."

Gabe walked over to a window and dived through it.

Before opening it.

And the glass didn't break.

Gabe fell to the ground, rubbing his head, while Balthazar cracked up laughing. "No Gabe, this is how you do it." He pulled a brick from somewhere and threw it through the window, smashing it.

"Couldn't you have just opened the window?" Cas asked.

"You're boring Cas," Balthazar said. "You're drunk and you're boring. Remember when you were drunk and found your soulmate? Go be that Cas, he was more fun."

They both turned around when they heard a yelp and saw that Gabriel was gone. They walked over to the window and saw Gabe lying on the ground outside it.

"Guys I think it's a double story," he called up to them.

"It appears so," Balthazar said and then jumped out the window. Luckily there was a Gabe to break his fall. "Cassie! Jump down, we'll catch you!"

"You think I'm going to put my life in the hands of you assbutts?" Cas replied.

"Yeah we do!" Gabe called.

Cas shrugged. Couldn't argue against that.

That was how Cas ended up with a broken wrist.

Luckily Gabe still had sense to call an ambulance, as well as getting them away from the school so they wouldn't be charge with destruction of property. Gabe also made his escape so he wouldn't get in trouble for underage drinking, leaving Balthazar to wait with Cas until the ambulance came.

On Gabe's drunken way home, he got lost several times. And saw a much more drunken Lucifer causing chaos...Gabe coulda sworn Luci had wings as well. But he was drunk so it couldn't have been true.
