Chapter Eighteen: That Look
A few days after the heated conversation with Dick and Vanessa. She began slowly coming around to him, she knew she couldn't be mad at him forever, this isn't a fairy tale, there wasn't going to be a happily ever after for her.
Rachel, and Vanessa sat on stools, as Gar was opposite the island. Each of them had cups of coffee placed on the marble top in front of them. Vanessa took a sigh, grabbing the warm cup up into her hands and placed the edge to her lips, taking a sip of the hot liquid. The coffee warmed her right up, slithering down her throat, touching her soul, like a pick-me up.
"What's up?" Gar spoke aloud, catching Vanessa off guard and shooting her head up to meet his gaze.
"Nothing," she replied with a sigh taking her gaze away from Gar. Deep down she really wanted to tell them the drama her and Dick had, but she doesn't think they would understand. Gar and Rachel took their gazes to one another, they might be kids but they aren't blind, they know that something was bothering her.
"How about we go out?" Gar spoke, after a moment of silence. Vanessa brought her eyes back to her but offered him a small thin smile, appreciating the offer.
"Thank you guys, but I don't wanna go anywhere," Vanessa replied in a softly to them, she can't deny they are really good kids, and they only wanted the best for her. Vanessa took another sip of the coffee and places the mug back down, but kept her hand around it so it would keep her warm.
"You know you can talk to us," Rachel's voice soared through the air, making Vanessa turn her whole body to face her. She reaches out her hand to Rachel's and placed her hand on hers. Vanessa smiles from ear to ear, knowing how lucky she was to have friends like this. No to have a family like this...
"Thank you, I mean it," Vanessa replied softly to her, gaining a smile from Rachel. Both girls had a bond with one another, a special one that couldn't be matched. Maybe fate or destiny had brought them together that day, but deep down both felt this gravitational pull to one another. Vanessa also felt another gravitational pull to someone else, but that feeling was totally different to one with Rachel...
"Is it something to do with Dick?" Gar spoke up, making Vanessa cock her gaze over to him, but her expression was blank, trying not to give anything away. Before she could speak, Dick had entered the room, coming over to the kitchen area.
"Speak of the devil and he shall appear," Vanessa mumbles to herself, while taking another sip of her coffee.
"Hey guys," Dick's rough manly voice pierced the air, making Vanessa quiver with a feeling that she's never felt before. However, she was stubborn and didn't make eye contact with Dick. He made it over to the other side of the island, grabbing the coffee pot and started to pour himself a cup. "What you guys up too," Dick asks, as the coffee was poured into the cup. But Vanessa was feeling nervous and angry around him, though she wasn't as raged up about their fight, the effects of it was still lingering in her mind and heart...
"I'll talk to you guys later. I'm off to hit something," Vanessa spoke aloud, not making eye contact with anyone before lifting herself from the stool and off she went. Dick, Rachel, and Gar watch her go, not stopping her from leaving. Dick sighs, a bit too loudly, alerting the others that he's done something to upset Vanessa. Rachel and Gar exchanges a glance to one another, a look to know better to ask what's going on between the two...
.................................
Vanessa stood on the training mat, in her gym outfit which basically was a plain black crop tank-top with some grey tight joggy bottoms and plain white running shoes. Vanessa hits the punching bag with her bare hands, doing a 1-2 combo, reliving the anger within. After a few harder punches to the bag, the anger inside began to subside. Vanessa exhales as she drops her hands back to her side, thinking that this doesn't help her face her problem, but it eases that...
"Good formation," Dick's voice rang out in the training room, making Vanessa freeze to the spot, but in the back of her mind she knew he would follow her.
"Thanks," she quickly recovers, turning back to face Dick, who was standing before the steps. "But I better-"
"Wait," Dick cuts Vanessa off before she could speak, her eyes drifting to him for a moment. Dick comes down the steps, and onto the mat, coming inches in front of Vanessa. "Are you still pissed about the other day?" Dick asks her, wanting to know if that bothered her still...
"No, what gave you the idea?" She replied cockily while crossing her arms over her chest, giving him a raised eyebrow for extra effect. "I just wanna forget about it, Dick. But every time I see you or near you, you do something to me," Vanessa spoke the truth, because why lie, she had no nothing to hide from him... Besides her being an Alien... "I know you're not big fan of feelings and that, but I know my emotions... I might not be a bad-ass princess warrior from another planet, I'm just a girl with powers that I still don't understand," Vanessa poured her heart onto the floor, but the words she spoke had an effect on Dick, a good one. "I'm still a mystery," Vanessa's voice softened, her gaze looked away from Dick as tears began to form.
"Ain't we all?" Dick replied back to her, she took her gaze back to meet his warm chocolate coloured eyes, which melted her heart.
"Don't give me those eyes Mr Grayson," Vanessa warns him in a light-hearted way, making him chuckle at her response. His eyes locked on Vanessa, making her lose her guard and drop her hands back to her side.
"You don't need to be a bad-ass warrior princess, because you're already amazing as you are," he spoke in a rough voice. "Nobody's perfect, I've far from it. We all are," Vanessa couldn't take her eyes off of him, as he was telling the truth but the anger boiled inside of her.
"I know I'm not perfect Dick! No one is!" Vanessa shot back to him, raising her voice. "I have powers that I don't understand and a darkness inside of me, but mines more volatile," she kept her raised voice to him, but he was unphased by her out burst as he's seen it all before. Vanessa notices she is clutching her hands into fists, trying to keep herself in control. "One of these days, I'm scared that I won't be able to hold it back..." Before Dick could get a word in, Vanessa turned invisible quickly and ran out of the training room, leaving Dick there stunned. The only thing he heard was her rushed footsteps leaving the room...
"Fuck," Dick mumbled to himself as he's fucked this up more than it was. He was going to give her a few hours to calm down...
...............................
Vanessa was now in her room, night had came upon the world. She sits up-right in her bed, laying atop of the covers, in her pjs which were just a baggy dark green top with her plain black knickers, reading her spell book. What happened hours ago was playing on her mind, now that she was calmed, she now feels guilty of shouting at him, she can't control what he feels for her. Though that kills her.
A swift hard knock came to her door, making her shoot her head to the door, wondering who it would be. She takes her gaze to the clock on her wall, it was mid-night. Who wanted to talk to her at this hour.
"Come in," she states, not paying any mind who it could be. The door swings open in-wards into the room, and no other than Dick enters the room, Vanessa groans in annoyance as she thought he wouldn't see her until tomorrow now. The door closes shut behind him as he swung it shut.
"Look, I'm here to apologise," Dick began, coming at the foot of her bed, his chocolate eyes on her, his hands in his pockets. "I know that your angry at me, and you have every right to be," Vanessa closes her book and drops it on top of her bed, as she was listening to him. "I don't want things to be awkward between us, because we have a lot on this team," Dick might not want to admit it out loud, but he likes Vanessa, like a lot but dating never truly worked out for him. Due to his past and what he does for a living and he didn't want to hurt her like he did Dawn... Vanessa and Dick stared at one another, for a moment or two but the air was silent, the tension was there...
So was the sexual tension...
"Apology accepted," Vanessa spoke after a moment of silence, cutting through the tension. Dick wore a thin smile, glad that this was sorted. Vanessa smiled back at him but it wasn't a true happy smile, it was more forced than genuine. "Now go, it's the witching hour," she states to him, making him chuckle at her comment.
"See you tomorrow," Dick replied, before turning on his heels and leaving the room. Once the door shut behind him, Vanessa let out an sigh while leaning up and placing her head into her hands. Maybe she will have to move on from the idea of her and Dick having a thing, maybe destiny didn't want them together. And who was she to stand in destiny's way... But nothing was ever set in stone...
Unknown to Vanessa, Dick was on the other-side of the door, his body lent against it, his head place on the wood. He took a deep sigh as he's fucked up, he wants to keep his relationship with Vanessa strictly team mates, but every time he looks at her, or she laughs and gives off that cheeky smiles of hers. It makes him want to smile too and does something to his heart...
