Chapter 2
The bright orange dragon made all dragonets step away from the door, Canyon raced up next to Phoenix, and never had Unity seen Canyon so angry. Another Roar was heard, it was coming closer and closer.
"I went to the Watcher, it's not SkyWings... It's HiveWings." She growled, Unity's Wing was close enough to hear.
The Watcher was a balcony that only the Guardian had access too.
Icefire growled stepping closer to Canyons side, but Canyon stopped him "NO, you have to stay here and whatever happens take good care of your Wing, you are very important, Phoenix, you too stay with Icefire's Wing." But before Icefire or Phoenix could argue Canyon called Vision.
"Visionary! You have to stay with them too, Unity" Canyon started looking down at Unity. "I called you that for a reason, stay close, stay safe, Phoenix will protect you all. Take as many dragons as you can, here's the key to the Watcher, when you hear my call I want you to fly, fly away as fast as possible, but stay around I'll find you. If I don't come by nightfall leave me" It was too much to process, why her?
Before Unity could say anything she gave Unity a silver key with a string of beads.
Icefire Looked at Canyon then Phoenix "Fine let's go now!" Phoenix opened her mouth to protest but then the doors slammed open wide.
Pearl the SeaWing NightWing hybrid that was standing besides Nightfire gasped.
The dragon wasn't a HiveWing, no, but an IceWing. The IceWing was their age, she panted fear in her eyes "The HiveWings are coming! I'm from The Scorpion Den, My queen Queen Rattle ordered me to come and warn you! They attacked our Orphanages too!" She cried.
Icefire stepped closer to the IceWing, he had an expression on his face Unity couldn't quite tell what he was thinking.
The IceWing stepped closer to Icefire wobbling all over like she flew all day (which she probably did if she came from the Scorpion Den).
"Alright what is your name dear and how close are the HiveWings?" Canyon asked.
"I'm Crystal, the HiveWings are only a few wing beats away!" She cried, her voice was soft and nice, probably way better to Icefire than Unity's voice.
Crystal leaned closer to Icefire, her eyes looked tired.
Unity has seen many female dragonets try to get Icefire's attention, and Evergreens. Icefire never let them touch him, even Unity gained rare wing touches, but Unity never felt bothered by it. But Crystal, a total stranger was able to rest on Icefire's shoulders? Was he fine with an IceWing on his shoulders but not one of his friends?
Unity stopped herself thinking like this and shook her head, I'm I... Jealous? She thought.
But Icefire suddenly pushed Crystal off, he looked a bit uncomfortable "erm, Crystal come with us" he said awkwardly, Crystal nodded.
Icefire turned to Unity and he looked at her nervously. Why would he look at me like that?
"Come on Unity," He said, he turned to Evergreen and they started walking down silently to the Watcher. Icefire would grab some dragonets here and there, but not too many to draw attention.
Unity somehow got to walk with Crystal, Crystal was very beautiful.
She had silvery scales and an elegant diamond head. She had flickers of different shades of blue here and there and her horns looked like crystals.
Nightfire was walking on the other side of me keeping her head down, Phoenix was behind growling.
When they reached the Watcher Icefire grabbed Unity's shoulder, but not harshly "Come on".
He pulled her to the door that led to the Balcony. Icefire stood tall, clearing his throat.
"Yes it is true, the HiveWings are on their way to take us" He confirmed, Unity stood beside him, and Crystal stood in front of him watching Icefire with longing eyes.
The dragonets that weren't in Unity's Wing started whispering. There were about fifty dragonets there.
"Canyon has given us a chance to escape, when we hear her call we leave, but not now, now, we must stay quiet."
They waited silent, Unity could hear the shuffling of talons and the small whispers as they waited.
Then a loud thundering roar echoed through the walls, but it wasn't of Canyon's, it was a HiveWings. They were outside waiting, or bashing through the door (It was sealed after they left).
Then the doors slammed open, Icefire put a wing protectively around Unity, he gave a small growl. Evergreen wrapped his tail around Ant's, Icefire and Unity would be the first to fly away, and Phoenix would be the last.
Unity's friend Nightfire and Pearl shuffled closer to Icefire, Unity looked up at him, everyone here saw him as a leader now, when they go out of those doors, they will no longer be Orphans, they would be called 'Rogues', and they'll be on their own from now on.
Visionary was close by, he was in the middle and his eyes were on the stairs.
There were roars downstairs, Icefire leaned closer to Unity making her breathing go slightly higher "I wish I could have taken them all" He whispered, "I know" Unity whispered back, she could feel her cheeks getting warmer.
There were screams and clangs, but no roar sounded like Canyons, did something happen to her? Where they all going to die here today for trying to escape?
But then, a roar echoed through the walls, it sounded like thunder, it was Canyons.
Unity didn't know how she knew, Canyon never roared like that, but she just knew.
"Now" Unity hissed unlocking the balcony door. Unity slammed it open, and straight away she felt the cool wind, wind! She never knew how pleasing and safe it felt.
Icefire grabbed Unity taking off, Unity felt the wind under her wings, she wanted to fly forever, flying felt so free, the wind in her face didn't bother her, she loved it! Unity wanted to swoop and dive, but she knew she had to fly away, away from her only home.
Crystal was beside them smiling, Unity turned her head to see Evergreen and Ant not too far, then Nightfire and Pearl, then Armadillo. Then the rest of the fifty dragonets Icefire was able to save.
Visionary stayed in the middle making sure dragonets didn't suddenly go out of line, and Phoenix. Phoenix wasn't flying yet.
"Icefire! Phoenix isn't in the air!" Unity cried. Icefire looked back, there was Phoenix's tail lashing out of the balcony, then, a HiveWing body fell.
Phoenix looked down at the body then jumped to join them. HiveWings were in the air, but luckily most of the HiveWings were busy getting the rest of the dragonets that didn't escape.
The sky was turning darker, the sun was setting, but it wasn't moon rise yet.
Nightfire and Pearl catch up with them "The HiveWings have given up, none are following us anymore" Pearl said after a while.
Icefire nodded "Good, did we lose anyone?"
Nightfire sighed "Yes, we lost five dragons in one Wing, only one survived, his names Emu."
Unity didn't know a lot about Emu, only that he was a SandWing HiveWing hybrid.
They've been flying for a while, but Unity's wings didn't ache at all, she felt like she could go on forever.
Unity looked down and the ground was no longer just rocks and small trees, but bigger trees and more places to hide. Icefire was looking down like he was thinking the same thing too; safe.
Icefire called for Visionary and pointed down below them "What do you thin Visionary?"
Visionary studied the ground, "Yes, good eyes Icefire, we could wait here, but let's go a bit further, I see a hidden cave not too far away" He said.
Icefire looked at him questioningly " what do you mean by 'see'?".
Visionary sighed "Yes it is true, I was born under a moon, I received the gift of prophecy, but it's not very good, I can go as far as I want but I only see the useless things. I never saw the attack but I saw Canyon handing you the key, I never saw who stole the golden ring from that guard but I saw the ring. I never saw when we'll go to this cave, but I saw it"
Icefire nodded "Not very helpful eh?"
Visionary shook his head.
"Did you ever had any prophecies?" Pearl asked curiously.
Visionary didn't speak he only closed his eyes and shook his head. He's lying, and on the look of Icefire's face he figured that out too, but the question was why?
Minutes later Visionary started gliding down, Icefire and the rest of the dragons followed. The wibgbeats soon faded as dragonets landed and stayed within the trees.
Crystal stayed close to Icefire, but other than a smile he simply ignored her. He was too busy finding a dense cave, and Unity was besides him on the other side looking too.
Evergreen walked with Unity, he kept his head down just talking but then changed the subject when they were far from earshot.
"There's something off about Crystal," Evergreen started. Unity tilted her head "what do you mean?"
"Did you know that when Icefire was talking to you she stared at you like you were a piece of junk!" He whispered loudly.
"And she acts all, you know, all tired when she came but is perfectly fine when flying!" He carried on.
Unity shook her head "um, Evergreeb, I think your over thinking it..." she whispered "I know we've been through a lot so far, but I think it's missing with you. You should go back and rest, I'll catch you some fish okay?" Evergreen looked down "of course you wouldn't believe me, sure."
And with that he stomped away back to the others. Unity was heading back too with fish as no a deer in her claws when she heard Icefire calling. Unity dropped the food on the pile that others have caught and went over too Icefire to see what he was talking about.
"I found a cave! Gather the food, stay in your Wing and follow me."
