Chapter 19: Mica- Sirr Lox
“Umm....hi Jake. What’s up?”
He smiles warmly. “I was wondering if you wanted to hop over to the coffee bar with me.”
I try not to laugh at his sweetness.
He is in all black. Black jeans, black leather jacket, black hair, black leather boots.
”I'll have to ask my parents, but sure.”
He winks at me.
”I’m gonna go wait in my car for ya.”
He walks out and a giggle escapes my lips.
I then walk over to Pa’s office and ask,
”Pa...would you..umm mind if I went over to The Drink.co with a friend?”
”Which friend?” he asks, not looking up from his computer.
”Uh.... Jake Walker.”
That gets Pa’s attention.
”A boy?” he replies.
I roll my eyes and nod.
”Yes, Pa. A boy.”
He sighs deeply. ”I guess, but only if you bring Tacoma with you.”
”Tacoma isn't here. May should be there, though.”
He stares at me, thinking.
”I guess that's good enough then. Behave and be home before five.”
I smile and hug him.
”Thanks, Pa.”
I go out to find Jake waiting in a shiny, sky blue, Bugatti Chiron.
I whistle. ”Wow. Nice ride, Dude.”
He smirks. ”Thanks, Tau.”
I blush and take my time getting in.
”OMGoodness! This is awesome!”
I exclaim as he flips on some cool sunglasses and we pull out onto the road.
Jake winks and speeds up.
I grip the smooth leather armrest.
”Please be careful, Jake.”
”Trust me, I will Tau.”
He replies snarkily.
When we reach our destination, my heart feels like it's gonna jump out of my chest.
I about fall out of the car, but Jake reaches out and catches me.
I stare into his dark blue eyes.
I could get lost in their depths.
The moment is broken by a teasing voice.
”Woo, woo! Oh Mica, I never knew!”
I quickly stand up and brush off Jake’s hands. I think im gonna die of blushing when I see Keiran.
He smirks.
”Hullo, Keiran.” Jake says, taking my hand and leading me into the cafe away from the ridiculous boy.
I give a sigh of relief when Keiran doesn't follow.
We take a seat on the stools in front of the bar.
”Hi, Mica, Jake.” May says when she comes to take our order.
”Hi.” I say as Jake says, ”Hullo.”
He smiles at me and I blush again.
May catches the glance and raises an eyebrow.
I roll my eyes and Jake smirks.
”What would you like?” she finally asks.
I order a mango mint smoothie and Jake gets a white chocolate mocha.
When May is gone, we start to chat.
”So why do I have the pleasure of this outing?” I inquire.
”I just thought it would be fun.” he replies nonchalantly.
I give him the ”look” and he laughs.
”Do you like books?” he asks.
Thinking the change of subject is odd, I reply. ”Yes, I do. Do you?”
He nods. ”Very much. There is gonna be a state book convention this weekend over in Nashville. I was thinking maybe we could get some peeps together and go. What do you think?”
I bite my lip, thinking how awesome that would be.
”I think it's a great idea! Who all would we invite?”
”I was thinking your siblings, May, and Mason.”
I frown. ”But your car only seats two? And Tacoma’s seats five I think.”
”My mom has a GMC Acadia that would seat all of us. I sure she wouldn't mind if we borrow it.”
***
Three days later I sit in the front seat of Mrs. Walker's car, riding from Nashville, TN back to Carthage. Four crazy teenagers take up the back seats, with the one sensible one, Jake, in the front.
He is the one all our parents agreed on to drive us.
The convention was a blast. Jake bought me three books, though he had to beg for me to let him. The boys each got a few comics themselves and May and Rori some novels.
Now we are driving the hour back home.
I smile as the beautiful scenery of Tennessee flashes past us.
“Hey, guys! Let’s sing.” Rori exclaims.
For the rest of the trip, we break out in karaoke. We giggle and laugh and I realize, once again, it doesn't hurt to have fun without Rylee.
