Chapter 1
The detour to escape Thanos' ship had caused a delay in their arrival, so by the time they got to Midgard, they had spent two months aboard the Refuge.
They encountered their first major obstacle as the great blue planet came into view. Loki was in the control room with Heimdall and Thor when he suddenly realized that there was a problem.
"How exactly do we plan on landing a massive spaceship in a city inhabited by more people than I'd care to count?"
Thor approached the window, his brow furrowed as he processed this.
"Heimdall, could you scout out the nearest empty plot of land that's in close proximity of Manhattan, New York?"
Loki's hands gripped the steering wheel tighter.
"We're going to Manhattan? You told me it was just a big city to properly accommodate our people!"
Thor ignored him and waited for Heimdall's response.
"The nearest available landing point is the Upper New York Bay."
The trickster gave Heimdall a condescending glare.
"Oh, so you're asking me to land this ship in the middle of a bay?! I cannot land a ship on water! We have no lifeboats!"
The older of the two brothers smiled, finding a simple solution.
"Just make a bridge with your magic."
Loki groaned at his brother's stupidity.
"My magic is transparent. A bridge would be nothing but green mist."
Brunnhilde entered the room, drink in hand.
"We could just jump off of this floating prison and sink it in the bay."
The god of mischief stepped away from the wheel to look at her.
"Are you serious?! Have you all lost your common sense?! I have to safely land the Refuge on a deserted area of land that is uninhabited by humans and you want me to sink the ship and have us all jump?! Unbelievable!"
Thor sighed.
"Well, do you have any ideas?"
They all looked to the temporary pilot expectantly.
There was a beat of silence.
"No."
A series of loud thumping noises signified the next person to join the fray.
The Hulk stomped in and acknowledged Thor with a grunt.
"Great, Thor. Look who followed you here!"
Thor raises his eyebrows.
"That's Brunnhilde's fault!"
"Hey!"
Loki turned back to the steering wheel and went pale.
"Everyone shut up! We're going to crash!"
Sure enough, Loki had neglected the wheel for long enough to send them plunging through Earth's atmosphere and rapidly heading towards the ground.
"Loki!" Brunnhilde yelled as she reached for something to hold on to.
Everyone in the ship had begun to feel the effects of the ship tumbling towards their doom. They gripped onto whatever solid unmoving surface they could find as the ship gradually neared the ground.
Back in the small room, Loki was fighting for control over the vessel.
"I'm going to have to land on a building!"
Thor whipped his head around towards his brother, who was shouting over the wind that whistled past them to be heard.
"You're gonna what?!"
The trickster tuned out the screams of the Asgardians and the warnings of his team to focus on a building under construction on the outskirts of the city. If he landed properly, the only collateral damage would be the rubble of a half-built tower.
"How quickly do you think Stark could buy this building?"
Thor's eyes landed on the ship's target.
"I'd place a call in, but I do not have a Midgardian cellular device!"
The ship was speeding towards the building now, and there was no time to choose a new landing area.
"By the Norns, Thor! Just call it a phone!"
Brunnhilde leaned forward as far as she could go without losing her grip on the control panel and proceeded to kick Loki.
"Focus! If we're going to crash then we might as well crash properly!"
He didn't dare losen his death grip on the wheel as he pulled upwards and prepared for the crash.
"Everyone brace yourselves!"
The building collapsed beneath the weight of the Refuge, shrapnel cutting through the clear blue sky.
The ship landed with a resounding boom, leaving a mammoth crater.
One by one, the Asgardians stumbled out, the last of hem being the team of heroes. They carried their few remaining belongings off of the ship and over to a large park nearby, which, according to the welcome sign, was called "The Battery".
"That's quite an odd name for a park." Loki remarked as he led a young woman over to her child that had been separated from her during the crash.
"Well, Midgardians are quite strange." Thor replied, making his way over to his brother.
"After two months aboard that miserable vessel, this is Valhalla."
Brunnhilde let the wind blow her long hair out of her face and her cape float in the light fall breeze.
"True, but if I'm honest, it feels a bit odd."
Thor turned to look at him as they walked through the park.
"Why is that, brother?"
Loki shifted in his leather uncomfortably.
"Well the last time I was here, how to put this kindly, I wasn't exactly at the best point in my life on a social and emotional level."
Brunnhilde downed another bottle of liquor and shattered it on the sidewalk.
"You also leveled the city with an army of aliens, got the ass kicking of the century, and got dragged back to Asgard by your overprotective and annoying big brother."
Loki gave her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Thank you, Brunnhilde. That's just what I needed to hear today."
She grinned back, playing along.
"The pleasure's all mine, good sir!"
Thor and the Valkyrie burst out into a fit of laughter, earning glares from the frost giant that found the conversation less than humorous.
They continued their walk through the park until the sidewalk began to head down a quieter street filled with empty and condemned buildings.
"Loki, you can go scout out a big enough building to seek shelter in while Brunnhilde and I try to calm the Hulk long enough for him to turn back into Banner."
The younger of the two brothers nodded curtly and headed off down the street.
He came back, minutes later, to find a fully clothed Bruce Banner and a mass of scared Asgardians looking like fish out of water. They were earning several curious glances from civilians and weren't taking it very well. Asgard was nothing like New York City.
"I found an empty warehouse a few blocks north of here that we might be able to occupy if we lay low. Good to see you're back to yourself, Bruce."
The scientist glared at him.
"Don't get friendly with me. I'm still convinced that you're going to try and kill us all, and Stark Tower is only a few miles away."
Loki sighed.
"Well at least pretend to like me long enough to get the people settled. I understand that you resent me for attacking your home and not getting the punishment you claim I deserve, but now is not the time to be worrying about vengeance and justice left unserved. If you hate me enough to want to kill me, then I'm afraid you're going to have to get in line."
With that said, he turned on his heel and began leading the crowd of frightened foreigners down the street, Thor and Brunnhilde following suit.
Banner groaned as he trudged after them.
It would take time for Loki and Bruce to come close to even tolerating each other, but time seemed to be on their side currently.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.
Because seriously, what kind of place would the universe be without the constant disruption of peace?
