Chapter 34

"So why would someone write that?" Zachary asked.

"I don't know. He's probably crazy like his uncle," Don said, referring to Alex and Lionel.

"Don't say things like that, Don. Wally's not crazy and he comes from his blood too."

Don cursed. "Don't remind me. Wally's okay because Evelyn's genes were normal."

"So are they leaving?" Zachary asked.

"No. Wally invited them to stay at his house."

"What? And you allowed that to happen?"

"Not much I could do. Wally's an adult," Don reminded him.

"Things are getting so complicated. I wish Lionel Carter had never come into our lives."

"Wishes like that are useless brother," Don said. "Lionel was like an angry tornado that ruined everything and everyone that came across him."

"And leaving a mess for the survivors to clean up," Zachary added.

Don frowned. "It's his fault your legs are paralyzed. It's his fault Crystal is gone."

"And Maggie," Zachary whispered. "You ever check on her?"

"We're divorced. I have no reason to see or speak to her."

"You loved her once."

"And she betrayed me by having an affair. Hell, I don't even know if Crystal was really mine."

"Does it matter? You loved her anyway, didn't you?"

"I did. She was my baby girl. Still, it gnaws at me knowing that I loved a girl that may have been sired by the man who helped hurt my sister."

"I understand. What he did to Evelyn and Maggie. Lionel Carter was evil in human form."

"He sure was, Zachary. He deserved to die. The only thing that gives me comfort is the fact that Maggie had to probably kill him."

"They never found the murder weapon," Zachary reminded him. "What if it wasn't Maggie?"

"Are you saying it was someone else?" Don asked.

"It's possible. Maybe that's why that person killed those reporters. They didn't want the truth to come out."

"No one from our generation has the energy for that."

"Speak for yourself." Zachary laughed. "If I wasn't in this wheelchair, I'd be climbing mountains."

"Well, if I were to look back in the past, the person with the most motive is me."

Don noticed his brother was watching him curiously.

"You don't think I murdered them, do you?" Don asked.

Zachary shrugged, before pushing the wheels of his wheelchair forward. "I wouldn't put it past you."

"I didn't kill anyone," Don said. "Don't you believe me?"

"Even if you did, you're my brother. I'd forgive you for anything, Don."

Don laughed. "You don't believe me."

"Well, you always did lie when we were younger so it's not that far-fetched. Besides, this isn't about something small. Your life was changed forever after that night. Maggie's betrayal must've hurt something fierce. I'd want to kill her if I were you. The fact that she's still alive makes me believe it wasn't you."

Don sighed. "Yeah, now that I'm thinking it over, I wouldn't believe me either."

"Brother? That's-that's impossible." Wally sat down before his knees buckled beneath him. "How is that even possible?"

"My father was also Lionel Carter," Alex admitted. "My uncle adopted me."

"So your mother had an affair?"

"Technically, yes and I hope you're not thinking of my adoptive mother, Joyce Carter. She and my father Dalton are extremely devoted to one another."

"Then who--"

"It might be best that you don't know," Alex admitted.

"So why did you come to Bayless? Was it to meet me?" Wally's eyes widened and a trickle of sadness ran through Abby when she realized he'd soon be disappointed.

"No. I came to Bayless to find out what really happened that night," Alex answered.

"You mean with Crystal and Lionel?"

"The whole thing is strange, don't you think?" Alex asked. "I mean...supposedly Lionel Carter kills Crystal in a rage of anger because he thought Maggie was going to dump him and then she killed him. Why would he do that?"

"What?" Abby screeched.

Wally and Alex jumped at her anger.

"You never said Lionel was murdered in that cabin," Abby accused. "How could you not tell me?"

"I didn't?" Alex asked, scratching the back of his neck. "It must've slipped my mind."

"Alex! If Lionel was murdered there and he murdered Crystal...don't you think it might be him who's also haunting the cabin?"

Alex looked thoughtful for a moment before answering. "I suppose that's a possibility."

Abby growled in frustration. "All this time I've been thinking it was Bryce but more than likely it was Lionel."

"If that second ghost was evil, it very well could've been Lionel Carter. I'm not sure what you've heard of Lionel but he was a very vindictive man. He used to be friends with Don, Evelyn, and Zachary," Wally said. "It wouldn't surprise me that Maggie killed him in a rage if he hurt her daughter."

"Even so, Lionel was a big guy," Alex reminded him. "I've seen pictures of him and Maggie Caldwell. She was tiny. How in the world would the petite Maggie Caldwell have taken him down?"

"What are you trying to say? That there was a third party?" Abby asked.

"Perhaps. Perhaps not. Either way, I'd like to know the truth." Alex began pacing the floor, his hands behind his back. "It's a shame Maggie Caldwell doesn't speak. She could tell us what really happened that night."

"Or if ghosts talked. Then maybe Crystal could tell us," Abby sighed.

"Ghosts?" Wally asked.

"Wally, this may sound hard to believe but I think Crystal is haunting that cabin. I hear a little girl laughing all the time and then I saw her and she led us to...well never mind that," Abby said.

"So if she really was a ghost, how would you get Crystal to talk to us?" Wally asked, confusion in his voice. He answered his own question. "A medium."

Alex tapped his finger against his chin. "I'll make a phone call."

"Yes, sir. I understand. I'll take care of it right away. Within the hour," Felicia said, her no-nonsense voice ensuring she'd meant what she said.

She disconnected the call and looked up at Crest Ridge. It was time to follow orders. Her heels gently tapped against the linoleum floor as she headed towards Maggie Caldwell's room.

"Do you like sitting in the dark?" Felicia asked the woman who was sitting quietly in a rocking chair. When she didn't get a response, Felicia flipped on the lights and waited for her eyes to adjust to the glaring fluorescent lighting.

"Hello, Mrs. Caldwell. You don't know me but my name is Felicia and I need your help."

Maggie Caldwell's glazed eyes didn't acknowledge the secretary.

"I know you can speak but choose not to. This is about Crystal."

Maggie's eyes flickered up and Felicia continued. "I need you to come with me for a little bit. Don't worry. I'll bring you back when we're done. Then you can continue punishing yourself."

Maggie's eyes widened but she still didn't speak.

"That's right. Stay mute. It'll make me dragging you out of here that much easier."
