Chapter 28: Worst Fear

I stood at the table looking at all the different weapons. A wild twisted smile plastered on my face, I probably had some kind of weird gleam in my eye. I picked up a few different things and tried the weight in my hand.

"So...how is this going to work?" I asked as I glanced at Winston.

"Well with a few of these, probably against some poor shank, but with others we have a target set up."

"Wonderful. When do we start?"

"Now." He grinned, and pointed towards Alby who had got up onto a table.

"Hey you ugly shanks!" He yelled, the Gladers all looked up  at him.

I leaned over to Winston, "How tipsy is he? I didn't think he would agree to this, bring weapons out."

Winston shrugged, "Maybe everyone is as curious as I am. See what you're really capable of."

I hummed, and crossed my arms and looked back to Alby.

"Okay! Jessie? The targets awaits."

I stepped forwards with a smirk, the crowd parted and I sauntered towards the designated area. I had grabbed a bow and arrows, and stood at the line they drew in the sand. The target was only about 100 feet away. I scoffed.

"I think I need a jar before I do this." I yelled over my shoulder. A jar was shoved into my hand and I chugged it back, held it in the air to wild cheers. Turning back towards the target, I pulled an arrow out, nocked it and pulled the string back. It was a little big for me, but it would do. My muscles, hands, arms and the rest of my body just automatically adjusted to compensate. I pulled the string  little more. Looking down the arrow to the center of the target and let it fly. Right away I knew it was going to be off, I had another one nocked and flying seconds after the first one. The first arrow hit the target, but not the entre. The second arrow hit the target with a thud, hitting the center. It wasn't a bullseye, but it was center. I frowned. Readjusting my stance, and nocked a third arrow and let it fly. This time it sunk into the target, right beside the second arrow, right dead center. I lowered the bow with a grin. I turned towards the guys behind me.

"Throw the knives!" Someone shouted.

"I need a human target." I yelled back.

"Use the Greenie!!"

I smiled evilly. "Don't think he has the guts. Greenie seems like a shank to me."

The crowd laughed. Minho sauntered over, his dark eyes boring into mine. He didn't say anything, but had a smug sexy smirk on his face. He only broke the eye contact when he turned and continued to strut over to the target. He pulled the arrows out and tossed them onto the ground and he leaned against it, crossing his ankles and taking lazy sips from his jar. Grinning I slid a knife out, and tossing it end over end and catching the handle. The crowd behind me was wild. The guys all cheering, a few were taking bets. I tossed it into the air once last time, my eyes now glued to Minho. He smirked at me. And then the shuck face winked. I tossed the knife. It spun, with perfect accuracy. It slammed into the target he was leaning on.

"I think you could get closer."

"Challenge accepted."

Taking the second and last knife out of my thigh band, I spun both knives around my fingers. Did spin and tossed them with a different throw, almost like a back handed throw, one after the other. They twisted in the air. He didn't flinch. The knives grazed his cheeks, one knife on each side of his face. He raised an eyebrow. I smirked.

"Okay okay...we get it!" Winston cried, making me rip my eyes away from Minho who had pushed off and was walking back over.

Winston stepped forward, "How about the spear?" He held one in his hands.

"I've used it on Grievers... but fine, hand it over. I'll give you shucken show."

I took it and slowly swung it back and forth, walking a little away from the crowd of guys. The metal spear head made it heavy on the one side. I took that into consideration as I began to twirl it a little more. Before long I had it spinning and twirling around both hands, my back, all over. It was just a swirl of brown wood and the glint of metal in the fire, while I spun around as well.

Winston had me use and try most of the weapons. I had no idea how to use the huge metal spiked ball chained to a thick stick. Some looked pretty medieval. Some took a little bit of adjusting, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

"Does this satisfy that I can kick all y'all's butts?" I asked Winston. I had placed the last weapon back down.

He grinned. "It was awesome!"

"Good. Now I've had enough attention, I'm going to go sit in the dark and be antisocial and drink. Later."

I slid away back into the shadows and over to the back of the crowd. I wasn't sure where Minho had gone. But I swiped another jar and made my way to a quieter shadowy spot. Leaning agist the tree in the quiet shadow of the Deadheads,  quietly I watched the people around me. I saw Chuck helping Frypan, Winston was with the other slicers now that he finished cleaning up. I still couldn't see Minho, I didn't see Gally either, so they were probably grabbing more Moonshine. I caught sight of Newt and the Greenie, they sat down almost right in front of me. I stayed quiet and listened to what they were talking about. I internally groaned. They were talking about me.

"Why's she the only girl?"

"I already buggen told ya! She just showed up. Minho carried her back into the Glade, she was soaking wet and out cold."

"And she has no idea?"

"She claims she was from a different bloody maze, full of girls."

"Do you believe her?"

"Of course I buggen' believe her!"

"Isn't that weird though? And how does she know how to use all those weapons? Aren't you worried she's gonna do something?"

"Okay one, everything in here is buggen' weird, Greenie. Two, she has her reasons for knowing-"

"You know though, don't you?"

"I do."

"And why won't you tell me?"

"Not my story to bloody tell. Anyways, And am I worried she'll do anything? That buggen' depends."

"On?"

"How many stupid questions you keep asking." I said from the shadows.

I saw Greenie jump with a yelp and Newt chuckled. The Greenie whipped his head around a few times and finally finding me in the shadows. His face morphed from shock to curiosity.

"I'm just trying to figure out what's going on!"

"Shut up and use your eyes. It goes a long way."

"How do you know how to use all the weapons? Where did you learn? Did you really come from a maze of girls?"

"Newt answered your questions just fine." I snapped. This Greenie was worse then Chuck. At least Chuck didn't stare at me with wide eyes like I was some kind of piece of meat.

"But he didn't. What's your story? No one gives answers around here and you're the only girl. I'm sure the other guys are just as curious."

"They can stay that way."

"You're not very sociable." He pouted.

"And yet your still here." I rolled my eyes.

The Greenie got up and came closer. He had a look I couldn't read, and I didn't like it. He kept coming closer, I drew a knife and held it up, making him stop.

"Personal fucking space Greenie. Back the shuck up." I snarled.

"How come your so mean?"

"Because I deal with stupid all day."

"You also have an attitude problem."

"Sure do, and that's not my problem. It's you who has a problem with my attitude. Newt here is just fine with it."

"Weeeell...." Newt said, with a smirk.

"Shut up Newt, you live my shuck off vibe." My eyes flicked to Newt, who had got to his feet, and stood with his arms folded.

"I'm going to get a drink, behave." He gave me a pointed look.

"No promises." I grinned at Newt. I watched him disappear into the crowd.

"So. Do you have a name?" The Greenie asked, he hadn't moved, but his eyes traveled all over.

"I do."

"Can I have it?" He asked eagerly. He had big puppy dog eyes now. He was searching my face, and then slowly down my body, like he was trying to figure me out. Which I did not like at all.

"Why? Because you can't remember yours and Greenie isn't a good enough name for you?"

His eyes snapped up to mine, and he frowned, in disappointment. "Sarcasm? Really?"

"Well Alby frowns upon stabbing you stupid shanks." I was playing with the knife in one hand and sipping from the jar in the other. The Greenie kept looking me over.

"So what do you do here?"

"Co Keeper of the Runners."

"Co?"

"Well I couldn't kill the other Keeper, that would be frowned upon, and we have already established that."

"What's out there?" He asked, his eyes finally leaving me and looking at the walls.

"Your worst fears."

"Really?" His eyes snapped back to mine, a cocky smile now on his face, "So...what's yours? Your worst fears."

"Dying a slow painful death listening to this conversation."

I watched his smirk slip a little. It turned into a frown, his eyebrows pulled together.

"Why can't you be nice?" He finally looked back up at me, with a hurt look on his face.

"Nice?" I scoffed, "Being nice never got me anywhere in life!"

"How would you know? Newt said no one remembers anything!"

I rolled my eyes, "You have a lot to learn Greenie."

"Then TELL ME!" He cried, throwing his hands into the air in frustration.

"No." I took a sip of the moonshine and watch the Greenie.

"Why were you hiding in the hard?"

"I'm part vampire."

His eyes lit up, and he grinned. His body language shifted, from stiff and uptight to a cocky slouch. He switched moods fast. I still hadn't put the knife away, I was leery of him. There was something off, and I didn't like. He tried to step closer again, I raised the knife again.

"Personal. Fucking. Space." I growled.

The Greenie paused. He cocked his head, Looking at the knife and then back to me, I could see the wheels turning in his head.

"So...weapons expert, likes the dark, mean and doesn't like people...Okay, I'm figuring you out."

"You can try." I drained the rest of the jar.

"I think I'm up for the challenge."  He smirked at me, trying to slid a little closer.

"Stay away from me." I warned.

I tossed him the empty jar, and while he tried to catch it, I slipped further into the trees and into the dark. When the Greenie looked up I was gone, he spun in a circle confused, trying to find me. I watched as Newt came back holding two jars, and they sat back down and Newt started talking again while the Greenie nodded along and asked a million questions. I turned and pulled myself up into the trees. Climbing up the tree, I made my way from one tree to the next, until I was at the edge of the forest. I leapt from the tree onto the roof of the Map Room. Swinging down landing softy on the grass, I shoved the door open and slipped in.

It was quiet in here. And it was empty. I exhaled slowly. Having to force my muscles to relax. I sat down at the table and pulled the maps from today in front of me. I slowly started to retrace the maps, making a big detailed map of the whole maze. We have a scale model of the maze in the cellar, but drawing the maze helped calm my mind. While I drew my mind wandered to what the Greenie had said, how I'm mean and rude. It didn't bother me, that's just who I am, take it or leave it. But it made me second guess what Minho saw in me. The awful cycle of self doubt. Minho constantly reminded me why he loved me. But Why would he like someone so broken. Was it just because I was the only girl? I pulled a blank piece of paper towards me. My fingers had that itch, that urge, I wanted that bite of cold steal on my skin. I  wanted to make the anxiety and self doubt go away.

Real song: Save Me From The Dark by Evanescence

•×•

How can you see into my eyes like open doors? Leading you down into my core, where I've become so numb. Without a soul... My spirit's sleeping somewhere cold... Until you find it there and lead it back home.
Wake me up. Wake me up inside. I can't wake up!  Wake me up inside. Save me! Call my name and save me from the dark!  Bid my blood to run. I can't wake up! Before I come undone. Save me from the nothing I've become.

Now that I know what I'm without,
You can't just leave me. Breathe into me and make me real.

Bring me to life
Wake me up. Wake me up inside. I can't wake up! Wake me up inside. Save me! Call my name and save me from the dark!  Bid my blood to run. I can't wake up! Before I come undone. Save me from the nothing I've become.

Bring me to life!

I've been living a lie...there's nothing inside.
Bring me to life. Frozen inside without your touch,Without your love, darling. Only you are the life among the dead. All of this I, I can't believe I couldn't see. Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me. I've been sleeping a thousand years it seems. I've got to open my eyes to everything.

Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul...Don't let me die here. Bring me to life

Wake me up. Wake me up inside. I can't wake up! Wake me up inside. Save me! Call my name and save me from the dark!  Save me. Call my name and save me from the dark.

Bid my blood to run.
I can't wake up! Before I come undone. Save me from the nothing I've become. Save me from the nothing I've become! Bring me to life. I've been living a lie... There's nothing inside. Bring me to life.

I hadn't realized I had been crying. But tears slowly slid down my cheeks, and landed on the paper, making it splotchy. Pouring my soul into the paper, I came to a realization. And it scared me more than anything I had ever seen or done. I realized not only was Minho the one I trusted most, he wasn't just my home...He was putting my heart back together, he was shinning light into the darkness of my soul. What scared me though, realizing my worst fear...

I loved him.
