Chapter 18: Therapy

Meanwhile at Beacon Academy, Ruby was seen taking a therapy session with Dr. Oobleck.

Apparently, the FOB head Corpsman diagnosed her with PTSD. Probably from witnessing a decapitation up close.

Ruby sat in a comfortable chair across from Dr. Oobleck, her eyes downcast and her hands fidgeting in her lap. The room was quiet, the only sound being the gentle ticking of a clock on the wall. Dr. Oobleck, with his characteristic energy slightly subdued, watched her with concern.

"Ruby, it's important to talk about what happened," Dr. Oobleck began gently. "Keeping these feelings bottled up won't help you heal."

Ruby took a deep breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't stop seeing it... Every time I close my eyes, I see her... and Adam... and... everything."

Dr. Oobleck nodded, his expression sympathetic. "It's a natural response to such a traumatic event. Your mind is trying to process what happened, but it needs guidance. You're not alone in this, Ruby. Many people who've experienced what you have need time and support to recover."

Ruby's hands tightened into fists, her knuckles white. "I should have done something. I should have saved her."

Dr. Oobleck leaned forward, his eyes kind but firm. "You did everything you could in that situation, Ruby. It's easy to think of what-ifs and blame yourself, but the reality is, you were put in an impossible position. No one could have predicted or prevented what happened."

Tears welled up in Ruby's eyes, and she looked away, trying to hold them back. "I just... I can't shake the feeling that I failed."

"Ruby," Dr. Oobleck said softly, "feeling like this is part of the healing process. It's important to acknowledge your emotions, but also to recognize that you are not defined by this event. You are strong, and you have people who care about you and want to help you through this."

Ruby wiped her eyes and took a deep, shaky breath. "What can I do to stop these nightmares?"

Dr. Oobleck handed her a tissue and smiled gently. "We can work on techniques to help you manage your symptoms. Breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and talking about your experiences are all part of the process. It will take time, but with support and patience, you can heal."

Ruby nodded slowly, her resolve starting to strengthen. "Okay. I'll try."

"That's all I ask," Dr. Oobleck said encouragingly. "Remember, Ruby, you're not alone. We'll get through this together."

As the session continued, Ruby felt a small spark of hope begin to flicker within her. It would be a long journey, but she knew she had the strength and support to face it head-on.

After her session was done, Yang entered the man's office next for therapy.

Thanks to Lieutenant Colonel Bauer talking to Ozpin. He asked that the entirely of Team RWBY receives therapy. Not because of the decapitation thing. But for everything.

Yang sat down across from Dr. Oobleck, her usual bravado noticeably subdued. She fidgeted slightly, her eyes scanning the room as if trying to find an anchor in the unfamiliar environment.

"Hello, Yang," Dr. Oobleck greeted warmly, offering a reassuring smile. "How are you feeling today?"

Yang took a deep breath, crossing her arms in a defensive posture. "I've been better, doc. Just... a lot on my mind."

Dr. Oobleck nodded, his eyes kind and understanding. "That's perfectly understandable. You've been through quite a bit recently. It's important to address those feelings and experiences. Let's start with what's been weighing on you the most."

Yang hesitated for a moment, then sighed. "It's not just one thing. It's everything. The missions, the fights, seeing my sister struggle... It feels like it's all piling up."

"That’s a heavy load to carry," Dr. Oobleck acknowledged. "Have you felt like this for a while, or has it been more intense recently?"

Yang looked down, her fingers tapping lightly on her arm. "It's been building up for a while. But seeing Ruby like this... it hit me hard. I feel like I need to be strong for her, but it’s getting harder."

"Being strong for others is commendable, but you also need to take care of yourself," Dr. Oobleck said gently. "What you're feeling is normal given the circumstances. It’s crucial to address your own emotions, too. Have you found any ways to cope with these feelings?"

Yang shrugged. "I try to keep busy. Training helps, and talking to Blake and Weiss sometimes. But it’s not enough."

Dr. Oobleck leaned forward slightly. "It’s good that you have outlets and support from your team. But therapy can offer additional strategies and a safe space to express what you’re going through. How do you feel about that?"

Yang met his eyes, her own filled with a mix of determination and vulnerability. "I’m willing to give it a try. For Ruby, and for me."

"That’s a great start," Dr. Oobleck said with an encouraging smile. "We can work on techniques to help you manage stress and process your experiences. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and to take time for yourself."

Yang nodded, feeling a small sense of relief. "Okay, doc. Let's do this."

As they continued their session, Yang began to open up more, sharing her fears and frustrations. The weight on her shoulders felt a bit lighter, and for the first time in a while, she felt hopeful about finding a way to navigate through her struggles.

Yang took a deep breath, her gaze shifting to the window. "There’s something else, doc. Something that’s been haunting me for a long time."

Dr. Oobleck nodded, his expression encouraging her to continue. "Go on, Yang. This is a safe space."

Yang hesitated, her voice faltering slightly. "My biological mother, Raven Branwen. She left when I was a baby. I grew up with my dad and Summer Rose, but... I’ve always had this void. I found her a while back in secret, but things didn't go as I hoped."

Dr. Oobleck listened intently, allowing Yang to express her feelings at her own pace. "That must have been very difficult for you. What happened when you found her?"

Yang’s jaw tightened, a mix of anger and sadness flashing in her eyes. "She’s the leader of the Branwen tribe. Not exactly the motherly type. When I confronted her, she basically told me she had no interest in being a parent. It hurt, but... I wanted answers, and all I got were more questions."

Dr. Oobleck nodded understandingly. "It's natural to want answers and closure, especially from someone so important to your life. How did her response make you feel?"

"Angry. Confused. Abandoned all over again," Yang admitted, her voice wavering. "I tried to be strong, but it broke something inside me. I wanted to understand why she left, why she chose that life over us."

"Those are valid feelings, Yang," Dr. Oobleck said softly. "It's important to acknowledge them. Sometimes, the people we seek answers from are unable or unwilling to provide them. That doesn’t make your feelings any less real or important."

Yang clenched her fists, her knuckles white. "I’ve been trying to move on, but it’s hard. Every time I see a family together, it reminds me of what I lost. I thought finding her would give me closure, but it only opened old wounds."

Dr. Oobleck leaned back, considering his words carefully. "Healing from such deep emotional wounds takes time. It’s a process, and there’s no right or wrong way to feel. Have you talked to your dad or anyone else about this?"

Yang shook her head. "Not really. Dad’s got his own issues, and Ruby… she’s dealing with so much already. I don’t want to burden them."

"Sharing your feelings isn’t a burden, Yang. It can help strengthen your relationships and provide support for everyone involved," Dr. Oobleck said gently. "Perhaps, in time, you’ll feel ready to talk to them. For now, we can work on this together, step by step."

Yang nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Thanks, doc. I think... I think I needed to hear that."

Dr. Oobleck smiled warmly. "Anytime, Yang. We’ll get through this together. You’re not alone."

After Yang got up and left. Blake came in.

Or more like thrown in by a Marine.

"Thank you," Oobleck thanked the Marine for finally bringing Blake for therapy. "Skipping our sessions again, miss Belladonna?"

Blake said nothing and sat down.

Dr. Oobleck observed Blake for a moment, noting her guarded demeanor. "I understand that this may not be easy for you, Blake. But I'm here to help, whenever you're ready to talk."

Blake nodded, her eyes fixed on the floor. "I know... I just... I don't know where to start."

"That's okay," Oobleck reassured her. "Let's start with something simple. How have you been feeling lately?"

Blake hesitated before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. "Conflicted, I guess. Guilty. Angry at myself."

"Those are all very common emotions," Oobleck said gently. "Would you like to talk about why you're feeling that way?"

Blake shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her hands fidgeting in her lap. "It's... it's about the White Fang. My past with them, what they've become..."

"It sounds like you're carrying a heavy burden," Oobleck observed. "Would you like to tell me more about your experiences with the White Fang?"

Blake took a deep breath, her gaze distant as she recounted fragments of her past. "I joined the White Fang to fight for Faunus rights, to make a difference. But things changed. They became more violent, more extreme. I left, but... I still feel responsible for what they've become."

"It's understandable to feel that way," Oobleck said sympathetically. "But you're not responsible for the actions of others. You made the choice to leave, to follow your own path."

"I know, but..." Blake trailed off, her expression troubled. "I can't shake this feeling of guilt. I keep wondering if there was more I could have done, if I could have stopped them from going down this path."

"You did what you thought was right at the time," Oobleck reminded her. "You can't change the past, but you can learn from it and strive to make a positive impact in the present."

Blake nodded slowly, absorbing his words. "I just... I want to make things right. I want to help stop the violence, to protect people from the same mistakes I made."

"That's a noble goal, Blake," Oobleck said, nodding in approval. "And you're not alone in that endeavor. There are people who care about you and want to support you, myself included."

A flicker of relief crossed Blake's features, as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. "Thank you, Dr. Oobleck. I needed to hear that."

"But what's the other thing? And this from observations and reports from the UNE Marines and Professor Goodwitch. It's how react when hearing a Faunus is killed during UNE missions. And when the word 'terrorist' is mentioned." Oobleck said as Blake flinched at the word.

Dr. Oobleck noticed Blake's reaction and paused, giving her a moment to collect herself. "It seems like those words evoke strong emotions in you. Can you tell me more about why they affect you so deeply?"

Blake took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly. "It's... it's complicated. Hearing about Faunus being killed, especially in violent conflicts, it brings back memories of my time with the White Fang. I've seen firsthand the consequences of that kind of violence, and it's... it's painful to think about."

"I can imagine," Oobleck said softly, his expression empathetic. "It sounds like you've experienced a great deal of trauma."

Blake nodded, her eyes filled with sorrow. "And when I hear the word 'terrorist,' it's like... it's like a knife to the heart. Because I know that's how some people see the White Fang now. And... and I can't help but feel responsible for that, even though I know I shouldn't."

"It's understandable to feel that way," Oobleck said, his tone gentle. "But it's important to remember that you're not defined by the actions of others. The choices you make now, how you choose to move forward, that's what truly matters."

Blake nodded, wiping away a tear. "I know... I just wish it wasn't so hard sometimes."

"You're not alone, Blake," Oobleck assured her. "There are people who care about you, who want to support you through this. And together, we can work through these challenges."

Blake managed a small, grateful smile. "Thank you, Dr. Oobleck. I appreciate your help."

"Anytime, Blake," Oobleck said, returning her smile. "Remember, healing takes time, but with patience and support, you can overcome anything."

As Blake got up and left. Weiss came in and sat down. Thankfully, they sent a list of the Weiss' issues and other bad stuff even starting from childhood.

Dr. Oobleck greeted Weiss warmly as she entered, then glanced at the list of concerns. Taking a moment to review it, he nodded, acknowledging the depth of what they were about to discuss.

"It seems like there's quite a bit to unpack here," he remarked, gesturing to the list. "Where would you like to start?"

Weiss took a deep breath, her posture tense. "I suppose... childhood might be a good place," she began hesitantly. "Growing up in the Schnee family wasn't easy. There were expectations, pressure to live up to a certain standard... I always felt like I was being suffocated by it all."

"It sounds like you felt a lot of pressure to conform to your family's expectations," Oobleck observed, his expression sympathetic. "That can be incredibly difficult, especially when those expectations don't align with who you truly are."

Weiss nodded, her eyes distant as she recalled memories from her past. "And then there's my father... and everything he did. The way he treated me, the way he controlled my life... I never felt like I had any agency of my own."

"It sounds like you experienced a great deal of emotional pain and manipulation," Oobleck said, his tone gentle yet firm. "Those kinds of experiences can leave lasting scars."

Weiss nodded again, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I want to be free of it all. I want to be my own person, to make my own choices without feeling like I'm being held back by my past."

"That's a brave and admirable goal," Oobleck said, offering Weiss a reassuring smile. "And you're taking an important step by seeking help and confronting these issues head-on. Healing takes time, but with dedication and support, it's absolutely possible."

Weiss managed a small smile in return, her shoulders relaxing slightly. "Thank you, Dr. Oobleck. I appreciate your guidance."

"It's my pleasure, Weiss," Oobleck said warmly. "Remember, you're not alone in this. We're here to support you every step of the way."

Later that night in Team RWBY's dorm room...

The atmosphere in Team RWBY's dorm room was quiet, each member lost in their own thoughts. Ruby sat on her bed, flipping through a comic book but not really absorbing the words or pictures. Yang lay on her own bed, staring up at the ceiling with a distant look in her eyes. Blake sat at her desk, a book open in front of her, but her mind was elsewhere. Weiss sat on her bed, gazing out the window into the darkness of the night.

After a while, Yang broke the silence. "Hey, guys... Are we okay?"

The question hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotions. Ruby looked up from her comic book, concern etched on her face. "I don't know, Yang," she admitted. "I feel like everything's been... off lately."

Yang nodded, her expression troubled. "Yeah, it's like... we're all dealing with our own stuff, and we're not really talking about it."

Blake closed her book, her gaze flickering between her teammates. "I think we've all been through a lot," she said quietly. "And maybe we need to... open up more, to each other."

Weiss sighed, her shoulders slumping. "I agree," she said, her voice soft. "We've been through too much to keep it all bottled up inside."

Ruby nodded, a determined glint in her silver eyes. "Then let's make a pact," she said, sitting up straighter. "No more hiding, no more secrets. We're a team, and we need to support each other through everything."

The other three nodded in agreement, a sense of unity settling over the room. Despite the challenges they faced, they knew they could rely on each other to get through it all.

"Team RWBY," Yang said, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"Together," Blake added, her amber eyes reflecting determination.

"Forever," Weiss finished, her gaze meeting each of her teammates'.

And with that simple word, they reaffirmed their bond, ready to face whatever trials lay ahead as a united team.

A second later, they all get a text message showing a picture of Anthony, David, Mari, Shino, Igor, Jie, Kang, Felix, Dae, and Michael giving them a salute with the caption, "Miss us ;)".

The four of them looked at the picture on their scrolls, smiles breaking out on their faces. It was a bittersweet reminder of their friends, far away but still close in their hearts.

"Yeah, we do," Ruby said softly, a wistful expression on her face.

Yang nodded, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "More than you know."

Blake smiled, a warmth spreading through her chest at the sight of their teammates. "We'll see them again soon," she said, her voice filled with hope.

Weiss wiped away a tear, her heart heavy with longing. "Until then, let's keep fighting the good fight," she said, determination shining in her eyes.

And with that silent vow, Team RWBY found strength in each other, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, knowing that their bond with their friends would never be broken.
