Chapter 13 - Apologizes and Amusement.
Of all times to run off, why now, Logan?
Virgil mindlessly tapped his finger on the table, attempting to distract his mind from the man across from him. Long story short, it wasn't working as if the tapping was simply fueling his thoughts. Even when he finally paused his anxious thought process, he thought of painful feeling of heartbreak in his chest, then to Logan and then what had just happened at lunch, then he'd be thinking again.
It was like a downward spiral of overthinking but with the constant change in the personality of the man in front of him, could you blame Virgil for trying to understand him? First, he was flirty, than he was insulting but now, he looked guilty. Virgil couldn't read him. Roman couldn't wipe the guilty look from his face, no matter how much he tried because... he did feel guilty.
He felt guilty every single time he did this and he did it a lot. He thought he would've come to terms with it by now but how blinded he could become because of his agruementive nature still surprised him everytime. Well, it came in handy at work at least. That notion only made him feel worse. He sighed, grabbing Virgil's attention. "Look, I- sorry. I'm just... bad with people, I just say the dumbest things."
As Roman looked down in guilt, Virgil couldn't help but smirk to himself. Seeing the man who had insulted him now so apologetic gave Virgil quite the much needed confidence boost. He leaned over the table, arms crossed as they rested against the wood. "You always this charming or am I just lucky?" Roman's eyes practically shot up, shock displayed perfectly in his green eyes.
How Virgil could go from anxiousness to teasing was beyond him. It was like it didn't bother him at all or he was used to it. Why that thought bothered him? Roman didn't know. However he quickly covered his concern up, thankful for acting lessons not just for his job but now normal human interaction. Great. He played along, matching the teasing tone of Virgil. "Sarcasm noted." He couldn't help but smirk back.
Virgil chuckled lightly, leaning back in his chair and pressing his feet against the edge of the table. He was visibly relaxed, the only movement was the rise and fall of his chest as he closed his eyes and simply listened to his breathing. Roman was unsure of himself, shoulders tensed up to worrying degree. He glanced unconsciously to his left before speaking. "So we cool?"
Virgil opened one of his eyes, looking into Roman's soul as if judging what the correct answer was. From the way Virgil looked at him, you would think Virgil could see his soul. Roman shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. Virgil eventually closed his eyes and shrugged. "Sure, just one thing." Virgil sat back, legs crossed on his seat with his arms resting on the wooden table in front of him.
Virgil opened his eyes to see Roman looking at him expectedly. The pressure was on the speak and Virgil was wondering if he should of brought it up at all. Missing his previous relaxation, Virgil sighed and contiuned speaking. "When you came in, you were looking at me and I just-" He fiddled with his fingers anxiously, looking down at them as he tried to distract himself or regain some confidence.
He felt unsure of himself, like he shouldn't ruin a good thing like the opportunity to start over with someone he had, admittedly, a bit carelessly forgiven. Unexpectedly, Roman cut him off, a cocky smirk still displayed on his face. "Sorry, it just find you extremely attractive." Normally, Virgil would have been flustered by a comment like this but it barely affected him at all.
All it did was make his smirk wider as he leaned over his arms with a raised eyebrow. "Didn't seem to when you sat down. What changed?" He teased. It was if he had murdered Roman's confidence as it completely disappeared from how he held himself. He was stiff again and he was stuttering over his words. "Uh- I... well. You see I-" He spoke frantically like he was trying to explain himself.
As Roman contiuned to freak out, he heard laughing eurpting from the man across from him. Virgil held himself as he laughed like there was no tomorrow and Roman stared at him in confusion. "I'm just joking." He managed to get out. Roman couldn't help but smile at finally being able to put the man at ease. Virgil finally stopped laughing, shaking his chest as his heartbeat slowed down.
He wiped a tear from his eye as he tried to come off of his laughed. "You're such a dork." Though dork wasn't exactly the impression Roman necessarily wanted the man to have of him, he was just glad he had made the tense man laugh if accidentally. He placed his charming smirk back on his face as he spoke. "I try." Virgil stiffled a laugh, rolling his eyes as he smirked.
"Too hard from the looks of things."
"Oh hush."
They both laughed and then they just... talked about everything and anything that came to mind, sharing stories and jokes and just having a good time. It was like a first date and Virgil temporarily forgot of the pain in his chest. That was until Logan and Patton came back twenty minutes later, hands intertwined. Virgil's face fell as Roman noticed them and waved them over. "Hey you two!"
Patton frowned at them as Logan seemly let out a sigh of relief, walking back over to seat. Patton huffed and sat down, glaring at Roman for some reason that no one at table seemed to understand especially Roman who shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Or maybe that was because he did know why. Logan too sat down down in his seat, eyeing Roman suspiciously before taking hold of Virgil's shoulder.
"Virgil, you ok?" Virgil rolled his eyes at the concern, pulling his shoulder away as he pointed to Roman. "Yeah, this moody dickhead kept me company." Roman gasped in shock, offensive seen in his green eyes. Virgil laughed at him as Logan raised an eyebrow but shrugged it off. Patton grinned, looking directly at Virgil as he spoke as if to rub it in his face.
"Well, we were talking about relationship stuff, weren't we, Logan?" Patton turned and winked at Logan. He gulped and nodded hesitantly. Now it was Virgil's turn to raise an eyebrow but he too just ingored it. All four of them are and talked for while before they all began to leave, paying and going outside. They began to say their goodbyes to Roman who was headed in the opposite direction.
Before he could turn the corner though, Virgil ran up to him. "Hey, wait!" Roman turned around, smiling at him expectedly. A familiar sense of uncertainty built back into Virgil's soul, wondering if he should really do this. He wanted to see Roman again but should he really give basically a stranger his number? He decided to just go for it, handing the piece of paper to Roman and looking away. "Here."
Roman smiled upon realizing what it was and looked up at Virgil who was staring at his feet anxiously. The more confident man took the opportunity to give Virgil a kiss on the forehead, him immediately looking up at Roman. He sliently saluted and walked away, Virgil's number in hand. The other three began walking back to the college, Patton turning slightly to glare at Roman over the shoulder.
When they were out of sight, Roman gave himself a high five for managing to charm the man before he realized something. He faceplamed, he was so fired.
