Squid

Janus met Poseidon's gaze from across the ship's deck. He was tangled in a large fishing net. He didn't look scared, just resigned. He tipped his head ever so slightly to the right. He wanted Poseidon to leave him.

Poseidon shook his head. His eyes turned to the man standing over Janus. He was tall, strong, and imposing. His white hair hung around his shoulders and he had a shotgun in his hands pointed at Janus. Oceanus.

"Where is the boy, Janus?" Oceanus asked. He jabbed Janus sharply with the tip of the barrel. "Tell me where he is and I'll make this less painful for you."

Janus growled. "I won't tell you where he is. You can't kill me."

Oceanus raised one eyebrow and smirked. "I can't huh? Well that's funny, because I rather believe I can. We Titans have something that your weakling Olympus does not."

Janus didn't look convinced. His eyes drifted over Poseidon again. They flashed disapprovingly for a second, then went back to Oceanus.

Oceanus slid his finger onto the trigger. "Last chance."

Janus grit his teeth. "Never."

Oceanus sighed dramatically and pulled the trigger. A loud bang rang through the air. The pellets from the shotgun shell buried themselves into Janus' chest.

Poseidon didn't stay to see what happened next. He couldn't fight Oceanus, he knew it. Oceanus was older and much more practiced. He had to come out of his hiding place behind a large crate to reach the railing, but it was the only option.

Poseidon ran. Someone shouted something he didn't catch. Just as he leaped over the railing, another bang ripped the almost silence. The pellets caught Poseidon's shoulder. He let out a cry of pain before he crashed through the water.

With a thought, he made the water shove him down into the darkness. The surface glittered and shifted, getting slowly dimmer and dimmer. He stopped pushing himself down as soon as the surface was out of sight.

He took a deep breath in, letting the water fill his lungs. He blew it out again in a stream of small bubbles and tiny current. The cold saltwater both soothed and burned the wound in his shoulder. He closed his eyes, panting, water rushing in and out as easily as air.

A strong current of water brushed against his back. His eyes snapped open as a chill of dread ran down his spine. Where in the ocean had Janus said they were? He couldn't remember. He spun in the water, looking around.

His blood curled and twisted around him like red ink as he moved. This was bad. Very bad. He made a scooping motion with one hand, and the blood drifted into a formless blob among the water. He couldnt let it disperse.

Another current buffeted him and this time he heard the dull whoosh of something passing. He caught sight of a large shadowy form in the depths below him. Impossibly long with a dozen tentacles. Little lights blinked on and off. Alarm and curiosity coursed through him. This thing was so much bigger than he was. That made him want to carry himself away on the waves and get closer.

As a comprimise, he started slowly drifting away. The water around him hummed in response to his orders. The shadow below suddenly changed direction. It rushed toward Poseidon faster than he could react in his pained and disoriented state. It wasn't until the first tentacle grabbed his right leg that he realized he was in serious danger.

Each suction cup on the tentacle bit into his leg painfully as it squeezed. That alone told Poseidon exactly what this was. A giant squid. A creature known to attack white whales... and win. One of these giant monsters had decided that he looked like the perfect snack.

Poseidon twisted, pulling his leg in an attempt to get free but that only made the thing tighten its hold. Blackness filled the water around him and he coughed. Instead of the clear, sharp taste of salt, the water now tasted similar to how fresh ink from a pen smelled.

LET GO OF ME! He shouted mentally at the squid.

Of course, the squid didn't let go. It wrapped more tentacles around him. Circles of pain appeared everywhere a suction cup touched. Poseidon refused to give in without a fight, regardless how hopeless it might be.

The small lights he had noticed before blinked in the ink filled water. They swayed in and out of his vision. He jerked suddenly, the sudden and unexpected motion catching him off guard. He stopped struggling for a moment, listening carefully and trying to look through the black waters.

The tentacles around Poseidon slowly started to retract. The fading black ink in the water became tinged with red blood as the water was stirred by the motion. Poseidon didn't dare move, afraid that the squid might change its mind and keep holding on to him if he moved again. He still couldn't see exactly what was happening.

The last tentacle pulled back so quickly, Poseidon was tugged in that direction by his leg. The sharp edges tore into his right leg more than before bringing a new flash of pain. He commanded the waters to push him away from the squid. Blood trailed after him like red ink as he left the black cloud. He finally got a good look at exactly what was happening.

A second giant squid had come and attacked the first. Poseidon didn't stick around to see which one would be the victor. The waters wrapped protectively around him and propelled him away from the danger.

Take me to shore, Pacific. Preferably to Janus if you can.

Poseidon felt the ocean accept his request. His eyes slowly slid closed. The burning pain in his skin and shoulder never faded even as he fell unconscious.
