Chapter Thirteen
November 23rd 1963
The nation woke with shock. No American could explain the shock that not only shook the country but the world. Foreign leaders, Queen Elizabeth, de Gaulle, even Kruschev gave condolance messages to the Kennedy family.
Bobby arrived at the residence the next morning. He wanted to speak to Caroline, and Caroline only. He didn't want John knowing.
Caroline was woken by a knock on her door. "Uncle Bobby!" Caroline jumped out of bed and hugged her uncle. He wanted to sob but he kept it together. "Uncle Bobby, why are you here at this time in the morning?" Caroline asked. Bobby led her over to the sofa before they sat down to speak. "Caroline, you know that mommy and daddy went on a trip to Texas" Bobby whispered, Caroline nodded.
"Well, something terrible happened yesterday" Bobby's eyes filled with tears. So much he couldn't even see his niece's angelic face. "They won't be coming home" Bobby sobbed. Caroline looked worried. "Uncle Bobby why are you crying?" Caroline hugged her uncle. "What do you mean they won't be coming home?" Caroline wondered.
Bobby explained what happened on the motorcade. He didn't go into full detail. He was aware that Caroline was old enough to understand but she would know the full story later in life.
It dawned on Caroline what her uncle had said. She began to cry and they hugged. They had both obviously sobbed so louder than expected as John came through.
"Uncle Bobby?" John dashed over to his sobbing uncle and sister. "What's wrong?" He asked, Bobby looked up in despair. "John you need to sit down". Bobby knew it was the appropriate moment.
He explained it in the same detail as he did to Caroline. John then exploded into emotion. The three sobbed together. After Bobby had left, Caroline did her best to keep her brother in high spirits.
But no matter what, she couldn't do it. "Don't worry John" Caroline hugged her brother. He looked at her. "They're still here. You just can't see them".
