19 (THE DRUNKEN DOWNFALL OF RELATIONSHIPS)

"So how was it?"

Jenna glanced over at Janet from the driver's seat. "How was what?"

She raised her eyebrows in response. "Dinner with Craig and his parents last night."

"Oh. That." She shrugged her shoulders. "You know, the way I expected it to go."

"So it was terrible," Dana spoke up from the back, munching on dry cereal while looking down at her journal.

"Yeah, pretty much," she admitted. "Anyway, I don't really wanna talk about it."

"I figured that, considering you didn't bring it up during our smoking session behind Melvald's with Page," Janet pointed out. "I bet he was eager to know how it went."

Jenna scoffed. "I'm sure he already knows the answer to that."

"Well, it was pretty obvious that you were gonna have a shitty time no matter what."

"Gee, thanks, Janet."

"Hey, you've been bitching about your relationship for how long now?"

She sighed. "Fair point."

As Jenna continued driving to school, she wondered how Craig felt about last night, even though he'd probably lie and tell her that it went okay and that his parents understood why she had to leave so abruptly. While she'd put on a smile and nod and just go along with it, she knew deep down that none of it was okay. In fact, she was sure that he was fed up with her episodes and he wouldn't tell her. She couldn't trust him, not anymore.

The feeling of dread hit Jenna as she pulled into the parking lot in front of the school, knowing that she'd see Craig any minute now. Fortunately, she didn't see him anywhere in sight as of now, which was somewhat of a relief for her. She didn't think she was ready to face him just yet.

"Not sure how you're gonna get through tonight with him at Tina's Halloween party if you can't even handle seeing him here at school," Dana commented, her head still down as she continued to write in her journal.

Jenna ignored her and kept looking around, seeing the same long-haired boy from yesterday in Melvald's walking towards the school. "Oh, look, there's Eddie walking by."

"He is?" Dana quickly lifted up her head with wide eyes and looked out the window.

Jenna and Janet grinned at each other, amused at the way she eagerly stared at Eddie, her face almost turning red.

"So you two are just friends, huh?" Jenna inquired.

Dana rolled her eyes. "Yes, just friends," she repeated, opening the car door and stepping out.

Jenna was next to get out, followed by Janet, then they headed towards the school. Dana was calling Eddie's name as she waved and went to go catch up with him, leaving the other two behind.

"I'm still trying to figure out what she sees in him," Janet commented.

"Wasn't he your first kiss when you were, like, eight?"

"Yeah, and Steve likes to remind me of that sometimes," she said. "Can't help that there's only so many kids at the trailer park to hang out with." She paused, shrugging her shoulders. "I'm pretty sure he's dealing all the drugs at parties, so at least he's useful for something."

"You think Dana knows that?"

"Dudette, I've known him long enough that he keeps the drugs in that lunchbox of his," she explained. "He's not doing a good job at hiding it. So if she doesn't know now, then she'll find out soon enough."

Staying quiet after that, the two girls entered the school, getting their things from their lockers before going to their first class. There was still no sign of Craig as Jenna made her way down the hall, but was surprised to see him already sitting at his desk, smiling at her when she walked by his classroom on the way to the gym.

For the rest of the morning, everything appeared to be fine between them. Craig didn't mention anything about the dinner last night, which Jenna was grateful for. She figured he got the impression that she didn't want to talk about it. During lunch, they sat together, getting the feeling that this was the last time they would be at the same lunch table. If she could break up with him soon after the Halloween party tonight, then that would be the case. She also had to prepare for the drama that would follow once it was done.

It was when Jenna was sitting in the library with Steve and Nancy during their afternoon free period that she began to think more about tonight. She just hoped that they would have one more fun night together before everything fell apart. Skimming through pages in her history textbook, Jenna was losing focus very quickly as she noticed the words were starting to mush together, which frustrated her. When she heard Nancy's pencil break from across the table, she jumped a little in her seat as she looked up to see her getting up to sharpen it. Once she was gone, Jenna noticed that Steve was staring at her with a confused expression on his face.

"You good, Jenna?" he whispered.

"I'm fine," she answered, nodding her head and giving him a weak smile.

Nodding back, he was quiet for a moment, then continued on. "I saw your car at Craig's house last night," he said, his voice a bit louder than before.

"Yeah, I was having dinner with him and his parents," she explained. "I saw yours at the Holland's house when I was leaving."

"Nancy and I eat dinner with them sometimes," he told her.

"Oh." Pausing, Jenna leaned forward and placed her arms on the table. "So you know about them selling--"

"They told us last night," he quickly cut her off, sounding like he was ready to drop the subject before they went any further with it.

But Jenna kept going. "And what did Nancy have to say about the whole thing?"

Looking annoyed, he shrugged. "She really didn't say much about it after we left." His eyes shifted behind Jenna, which made her turn around to see Nancy staring at the librarian fixing the books on one of the shelves.

Jenna turned her head back to face Steve. "You don't seem too concerned about it," she stated, remembering what Nancy said about how he was acting over Barbara's death.

Steve's eyes briefly went back to Jenna and shook his head before looking at Nancy again. "I mean, yeah, I am, but I'm also concerned about us and what would happen if they found out what actually happened to her."

"Well, how about you go talk to your girlfriend and see how she feels about it?" she retorted.

He glared in response. "How about you worry about your own damn relationship and butt out of mine?" he snapped, shooting up from his chair and leaving Jenna alone at the table.

It felt like a hit to the chest after hearing his words. Shifting in her seat, Jenna was now looking back at Nancy, with Steve giving her a concerned expression and his hand on her shoulder. She watched as the two of them walked towards the back of the library, with Steve glancing back at her before disappearing behind the shelves.

*******

It was during the time Jenna dropped off Janet at her home (Dana stayed after school for something she didn't want to tell her about) and headed back towards her own house that she was starting to feel more nervous about tonight. While she was excited to wear her costume, it still felt weird that after she would have a night filled with dancing and drinking with Craig, tomorrow would be completely different for them. It made her stomach do flips just thinking about it.

When it was almost time for Craig to come over and pick her up, Jenna and her mom were in the middle of getting her wig on, grunting in pain when she put in another bobby pin to hold it in place, pulling it uncomfortably tighter around her head.

"Sorry, honey," Dorothy told her. "I just wanna make sure it stays on."

"I think it will with how many bobby pins you've stuck me with already," Jenna retorted.

"Well, for what it's worth, you look great," she replied, chuckling.

Jenna smiled a little her way. "Thanks." When she was done with the wig, she grabbed her Pink Ladies jacket from the bed, swinging it over her shoulder as she placed the other hand on her hip. "I really feel like Rizzo now."

Dorothy nodded her head, laughing. "I think Stockard Channing would approve."

All of a sudden, they both heard a car pulling in the driveway, which signaled that Craig was here. They headed downstairs to get the door, watching as he got out of his car and came strolling up the driveway and on the front porch in his costume, adjusting his leather jacket.

"Hey there, stud," Jenna greeted him, putting on a happy face.

He chuckled, slicking back his hair. "Damn. You lookin' good yourself, babe."

"I try my best," she stated, leaning in to give him a peck on the lips, trying to not mess up her lipstick.

"Okay, I wanna get a picture of you two real quick!" her mom exclaimed as she rushed towards them with the camera in her hand, raising it up. "Now smile!"

Jenna and Craig moved closer towards each other, his arm going around her waist, while hers went up to his shoulder. When several flashes went off, it took them a moment for their eyes to adjust back to normal, then they bid Dorothy goodbye (this was after she lectured the two teenagers about being safe and responsible while they were out) and left the house, heading to the party.

When they got to Tina's gigantic house, there was already a line of cars parked down her driveway and street. She had Halloween decorations all over her front yard, along with people from school with their drinks and costumes. Jenna could hear the music blaring once they got out of the car and started heading towards the house, putting on her Pink Ladies jacket in the process.

Inside, the house was filled with more people, all but cheering and yelling from every corner, and due to the house being very big, there was still room for others to pile in. Jenna looked around to see if Steve, Nancy, or Janet were around, but she couldn't find them anywhere. Before she and Craig could continue venturing inside the house, Tina came strolling towards them in her "Like A Virgin" Madonna costume.

"Hey, guys!" With a wide smile through the loud music and shouting, her eyes went up and down as she took a good look at them. "Love the costumes!"

"Thank you!" Jenna replied, giving her a small smile.

She briefly glanced Jenna's way before focusing her eyes on Craig. "I think Tommy's looking for you!" she told him. "He's in the backyard!"

Nodding, Craig looked over at Jenna. "I'll be right back!" he shouted, then followed Tina outside.

Jenna huffed a sigh and looked around the house, spotting the punch bowl on the counter. When she got there, she took a plastic red cup and scooped it through the foam and into the bowl, staring at the red drink before gulping it down, tasting the sweet punch and bitter vodka all at once. She went to get some more, filling her cup and drinking until it was empty again. She did this one more time before she could feel the alcohol kicking in her system. After that, she headed to the center of the living room, dancing and shouting with the others.

Jenna wasn't sure how long she had been on my feet, nor did she even see if Craig was still outside with Tommy. She was too busy having a good time to worry about it right now. When she turned towards the front door, she saw Steve, Nancy, and Janet standing there as they glanced around the room.

"Guys!" Jenna yelled, weaving through the crowd of people to get to them. "You made it!"

"And you're already drunk!" Janet shouted back, her arms folded over her chest. "Wanna show me where to get the good stuff?"

"Yes, let's go!" she shouted, grabbing her arm and leading her towards the bowl that looked like it had been filled up with more punch. "It's soooo good!"

While Janet took a cup and got herself some to drink, Jenna spotted Billy, Tommy H, and Craig entering the house, heading for Steve and Nancy with glares on their faces. I saw Tommy H's lips move as he spoke to Steve, though Nancy seemed uninterested and came over towards us.

"What's in this?" she asked Jenna and Janet

"Pure fuel!" a guy shouted from behind them, to which the three were startled by his loud voice. "Pure fuel!"

Looking back at the punch, Nancy grabbed a cup and got herself a drink, swallowing it down.

"Hey, hey, Nance, take it easy!" Steve interjected as he came up from behind us. "Nancy!"

She stopped drinking for a moment to shoot Steve an annoyed expression. "We're just being stupid teenagers for the night. Wasn't that the deal?" Before he could get the chance to respond, Nancy had already turned around and went to join everyone else to dance.

Steve then looked at Jenna and Janet. "I'm guessing you two are gonna join her?"

"Yeah, is that a problem?" Jenna snapped. "Maybe some of us wanna have fun tonight."

Rolling his eyes, Steve shook his head. "Whatever. Go make stupid decisions."

"Then try to lighten up, dude," Janet spoke up, motioning her hand towards the punch. "It might do you some good to let loose."

When he didn't say anything else, Jenna and Janet headed towards the others and started to dance with Nancy. The more they took sips from their cups, the more carefree they became. As time kept passing by, the girls didn't stop for anything. She made eye contact with Steve, who was still standing by the punch bowl. Nancy noticed this, too, raising her eyebrows his way and motioned him to come join the girls. Eventually, with a slightly amused expression, he finally came over and started to dance with them.

"See? This isn't so bad!" Jenna shouted his way.

Steve let out a laugh. "Fine, you win this time!"

So they continued to spin and jump around as songs kept changing and people were going in and out of the house. Jenna didn't pay much attention to them, too busy enjoying herself as she and Janet swayed to the music. But soon enough, just as Nancy was going to get more punch and Steve was trying to stop her, her feet started to hurt whenever she took a step, so she decided to leave the dance floor and head down the hallway to find a bathroom, where it was quiet, to freshen up and rest for a couple of minutes. Stumbling a little, Jenna leaned against the wall and felt her hand go to the first door that she reached, turning the knob and opening it.

But if she had known that she'd walk in seeing her boyfriend sucking face with Tina Miller, she probably would've picked another door.

"What the hell?" Jenna said as Craig and Tina saw her and broke apart from each other.

"Jenna," he stated, fixing his shirt and giving her a shocked expression. "I can explain."

She stared at him for a moment, then took a deep breath to compose herself. "How long?"

"What?"

"How long has this been going on?"

Craig looked over at Tina, then let out a sigh. "Since the night we were supposed to meet at Leslie's."

Jenna scoffed, shaking her head. "I fucking knew there was something going on with you two."

With an annoyed expression, he nodded his head. "Yeah, just like there was something going on between you and Harrington."

Her eyes went wide. "Me and Steve? Are you serious, Craig? I've told you already that we're just friends!"

Craig turned towards Tina. "Give us a few minutes. I'll be right out." Tina didn't object as she scurried out of the room, and then he focused his attention back on Jenna. "I really was running late that night. Some family issues came up and went on later than usual. So when I was finally able to get out of the house and meet you..." He trailed off, his face turning somewhat sad. "I saw you and Harrington leaving the diner that night and I knew it was too late. So I went to Tina's."

"And I'm guessing one thing led to another," she spoke up. "So you decided to keep me around as your girlfriend while screwing another girl for three months. All because you saw two friends having dinner together."

He scoffed in response. "It's more than that, Jenna. I know you guys are good friends and all, but I've seen the way you two look at each other. You can't tell me there's nothing there."

"Yes, I can, because you're wrong," she protested. "If that's your reason for cheating on me, then it's a pretty shitty one."

Craig's expression turned cold. "Well, maybe I'm just not in love with you anymore, and I think you've also felt that way about me for a while."

Opening her mouth to respond, she was struggling to find any more words inside of her to say. "Craig--"

"We can't keep doing this, acting like everything's okay between us," he cut her off. "It's over. We're done, Jenna." With that, he moved past her and headed back out to the party, leaving Jenna alone in the room, her heart sinking to the bottom of her stomach.

A lump formed in her throat as Jenna felt her eyes water up, a few tears falling down her face as she turned around and sprinted down the hallway and past the crowd of people, trying to keep her head down, along with not falling. Whether or not anyone was staring at her or not even paying any attention to me at all, she didn't care. She just wanted to get as far away from Craig as she could. While she anticipated their breakup, she didn't think it would happen like this.

Jenna was almost at the door when she bumped into someone, causing her to lift her head up to see who the person was. "Sorry," she said.

"Jenna?" It was Jonathan Byers, who shot her a confused look when he saw her sad face. "You okay?"

She opened my mouth to speak, but all she could do was get a few words out. "I, uh...I'm..." Jenna trailed off, shaking her head as she backed away. "I gotta go." Turning around fast, she headed out the front door and down the yard, wanting to put a lot of distance between her and the house, almost tripping on the way.

It took everything inside Jenna to prevent herself from screaming at the top of her lungs, but she didn't want to risk having an episode with her powers in front of a bunch of strangers. The way Craig looked at her during the argument was all she could think about, seeing how upset and heartbroken he was once it was all said and done. Stepping out of the way for some kids on the sidewalk, she worked on taking off the wig, but only got frustrated when trying to pull out the bobby pins that got tangled up in her hair.

"This party really does suck if you're leaving, too!" Jenna jumped a little and stopped messing with the wig, turning her head to see Steve walking towards her. "Where's Craig? I thought you came with him." When he was finally in front of her, his expression went from confused to concerned. "Hey, you okay?"

"I'm fine," she lied, turning her head away.

"Have you been crying?" he asked, trying to get another good look at her face. "Jenna, talk to me."

"Steve, just fuck off so I can go home," she snapped.

"No, I'm not gonna leave you out here," he protested. "What's wrong?"

Jenna sniffled as she fixed her red eyes on Steve, about to explain what happened with Craig. Taking a deep breath, her eyes burned with sharp, painful tears that uncontrollably spilled over as she found herself at a loss for words.

"Jenna," he spoke up again. "It has something to do with Craig, doesn't it?"

Nodding her head, Jenna started to cry even more. "We broke up," she managed to croak out.

Steve's face fell in response. "Come on. Let me take you home and you can tell me what happened."

Jenna followed him to his car, which was a block away from Tina's house. The walk there was quiet as she continued with taking off her wig, struggling to do so. All of a sudden, she felt Steve's hands on top of hers as he was pulling out each bobby pin that he could find. After a few minutes of feeling her head getting more relaxed with each pin that was out of my head, she was able to take off the wig and undo the bun in her hair, relieved that the tight sensation in her head was no longer there. She gave Steve a thankful look, which he only nodded his head in response as they reached his car, hopping in the passenger's seat and not looking over at him as he started the car and drove off.

"So you and Craig are, like, over for good?" Steve asked.

"Yeah, it's for good," Jenna confirmed. "He was cheating on me with Tina Miller for the last three months."

Steve shook his head in annoyance. "That asshole," he muttered. "I'm sorry, Jenna."

Jenna let out a scoff. "I'm sure everyone is ready to say, 'I told you so' when they hear about this tomorrow." She paused, finally shifting her attention towards Steve. "I'm surprised you haven't said it yet."

"Because my night is going just as shitty as yours," he said. "Nancy and I got into a fight. She was drunk and saying all these things that..." Trailing off, he let out a sigh. "I guess I needed to hear it. Just...maybe not like this."

Jenna felt her stomach beginning to turn as Steve talked about what happened between him and Nancy, which only brought her back to Craig's party and to earlier today in the library about what was going on with her. Now she didn't feel so bad that she wasn't the only one that missed the signs but chose to ignore them. Still, she knew she was an idiot for doing so.

"I'm so stupid," Jenna mumbled, shaking her head as the tears started to fall again. "God, I'm so fucking stupid."

"No, you're not stupid, Jenna," Steve assured her. "Because if you're stupid, then that means I'm stupid."

"You're already stupid, Steve," she told him. "Look, can we just be quiet, please? I don't feel like talking about the party anymore."

Steve shot her a sympathetic look as he turned on the radio and kept the volume low. She pressed her forehead against the window as she listened to the music, trying her best to stay focused on that instead of the nausea that was creeping up on her. She was about to close her eyes as they kept riding when she heard the sound of humming from the driver's side. Jenna turned her head and watched as Steve swayed his head from side to side, then stopped when he saw her looking at him.

"What?" he questioned.

"Nothing. I just heard you humming, that's all," she replied. Jenna paused, listening to the song more carefully this time and instantly recognizing it. "I didn't know you were into Earth, Wind & Fire."

He shrugged casually. "Just a few of their songs. They're catchy."

"I wouldn't say this song in particular is catchy."

"Yeah, it is. It's always been catchy."

It was a rather slow song for this band, and while she had heard of it before, she couldn't remember the name.

"I have an idea," he stated. "Maybe if I sing the song--"

"Absolutely no--"

"--then you'll see my point," he finished, ignoring her completely. "Hold on, here comes the chorus!" As his voice got louder, so did the music. "'That's the way of the world...'"

"Oh my God," she said, groaning as she leaned back in the seat.

"Come on, my singing is good!" he protested jokingly.

"Your singing is terrible!" she shouted through the loud song.

"'Child is born with a heart of gold...'"

"Steve!"

"'Way of the world makes his hearrrt so cold...'"

"Okay, okay, you win!" Jenna cried out, remembering Steve saying the same to her earlier tonight. She looked over at him and started to laugh. "Sure, it's kind of catchy. But your singing still sucks."

Steve chuckled, glancing over her way. "You know, I haven't seen you smile in a while."

"Are you trying to tell me you missed seeing my smile?" she playfully retorted, raising her eyebrows.

He took a moment to answer, almost at a loss for words. "Well, it's just nice to see you smile, especially with the night we're having. It's the one good thing to come out of tonight." He paused, furrowing his brows. "That's not weird to say, is it? I mean, you're my friend and I hate to see you unhappy."

Jenna was quiet for a moment as she stared at him driving. Then, she smiled a little again. "I thought we were best friends."

"You're right, and best friends always look out for each other," he stated, reminding her from when he said that before a couple of months ago at Craig's party.

It wasn't long before they made it to her house, with Steve pulling into the driveway. Turning off the car, he got out and came around the car to open her door, helping Jenna step onto the ground and walked her all the way to the front porch. He knocked on the door, and he faced her while they were waiting for an answer.

"Listen, um...I'm sorry for snapping at you in the library today," he said. "I was an asshole for doing that. You didn't deserve it."

"Don't worry about it," she told him.

"You also didn't deserve to be dumped," he added. "Especially with the way it went tonight."

Jenna sighed, leaning against the wall. "Well, I'm sure you and Nancy will work out whatever happened at school tomorrow."

Steve shot her a blank stare, shrugging his shoulders. "Yeah, I hope so."

Suddenly, the door flew open, with Dorothy standing there, surprised to see her with Steve. "Oh, hi. You're home early." When she noticed Jenna's tear-stained face, her expression became worried. "Jenna, what--"

"It's kind of a long story," Steve cut her off, then sheepishly closed his mouth. "Sorry, I'll, uh...I'll just go." He turned Jenna's way, nodding his head. "See you at school tomorrow."

"Thanks for bringing her home," her mom said, giving him a small smile.

"Yeah, thanks," Jenna added.

With one more wave goodbye, Steve walked off the front porch and headed back to his car. Once he was out of the driveway, Jenna stepped inside the house, with her mom closing the door behind her.

"Wanna tell me why Steve took you home and not Craig?" she curiously asked with raised eyebrows.

Craig.

He popped into her head again, which was when the lump in Jenna's throat returned, along with the water works. Before she could give her an answer, her mom's face softened as she pulled Jenna in for a hug, holding her tight as Jenna buried her face into Dorothy's shoulder and wept, unable to get rid of the sinking feeling that came out of tonight.

~~~~~~~
A/N: Oop, well, Craig and Jenna are over now (but who's really sad about it? I'm not LMAO).
Anyway, I've had this scene in my head for a while now and I'm excited that I finally got to write it, even if it was a struggle.
So what did y'all think?
