Chapter 40

"Give it up Clayton, I don't want to have to hurt you," Diana warns.

He turns to look at her, his face shifting strangely from the other side of the shield separating us. He looks feral and unpredictable as his eyes flit from mine to Diana's.

Beyond him, Astrid nervously eyes me.

"Keep him distracted," she tells me in a low voice even though it's coming from inside my head.

"We will," Diana promises, her eyes darting between us.

"I will not obey you like a dog when I am a wolf," Clayton says as a smile slips across his mouth.

Diana cries out, the sound high and strained. I flinch when she collapses to her knees and grabs at her throat.

"Diana!" Astrid yells.

I freeze in place, desperately trying to keep an eye on Diana and my wand trained on Clayton as he takes a step forward, a menacing look shadowing his eyes.

"Let down the shield," I beg Astrid silently, but she doesn't respond.

"Give in, Diana, it's much easier that way," Clayton urges her as he dares to try and take another step.

Diana takes aim then, her arm snapping up to point her gun at him instead, "Not another step, that shield may stop spells, but it won't stop a mortal bullet."

Her voice is a low, hissed warning, like a noise a cornered cat would make as her jaw clenches and unclenches, the tendons in her neck taut. The blood drains from her face, her skin looking paler than ever as she shivers and shuts her eyes.

Clayton lunges then, his fingers curled into claws as his mouth opens into a nearly bestial howl. I bring my wand up to try and stop him but Diana must hear him move because she opens her eyes and pulls the trigger.

There's a bang and a bright red spot appears on Clayton's shoulder as he skitters to a stop. He blinks, his eyes hazy as he touches the spot like he's been surprised as Diana shakily gets to her feet. He bares his teeth in a snarl as he opens his mouth, his eyes focusing on her as they spark with rage.

"You'll regret that," he whispers as he stumbles forward out of the protection of the shield.

Diana uses her wand then, a stun spell hitting him hard as his mouth opens into an 'o'. He falls forward without another sound, hitting the floor hard as he lies still.

I glance over at Astrid to see that she's staring blankly at her uncle before she looks to Diana. She silently climbs down from the chair to step over his motionless body as she hesitates to get near Diana as she looks from me to her.

I take a step towards Diana as she sways on her feet, her eyes blearily meeting mine. She makes another painful noise, like a gasp for air before her knees buckle as she collapses onto her side and curls into a ball.

"Diana," I rush to kneel beside her as she remains lying on her side, her breath coming out in ragged gasps of air.

I fear for a moment that Clayton has somehow cursed her, but there's no blood to be seen as I examine her. I helplessly look to Astrid as she stoops beside me and hovers her hands over Diana as she meets my eyes, her gaze full of worry and fear.

"She's not injured," she announces after a moment.

"Everything hurts," Diana groans as she lifts her head for a moment before it falls limp against the wooden floor with a thud.

"Garret should be able to help her, we need to get her to him," I tell Astrid, "help me get her to feet."

I reach down and tug Diana to a crouched position, her arms stiff as her face contorts with pain and her eyes close. I cast a look at Clayton's prone form, knowing that he's stunned and can't move but not entirely trusting him to stay that way.

Astrid loops Diana's other arm over her shoulder and together, we carefully begin to navigate through the house to the door.

Once outside, we load her up into the backseat of the car before I get into the front seat and start it. I can scarcely remember where Garret's house is as I pull out onto the road, hoping that I'll be able to find his house.

"I can't see anything back here," Astrid suddenly says as there's a clicking noise.

Light floods in from the backseat as she turns on the dome-light and I squint as it makes my reflection show up on the windshield.

"Shut it off!" Diana yelps, like the light is hurting her as it abruptly goes out.

"There's something wrong with your eyes, your pupils are huge," Astrid explains in a low voice.

"It hurts," she protests and even from the driver's seat I can hear the strain in her words as I grip the steering wheel tighter.

"Just hold on," I promise her as I coax more speed out of her car, the needle on the speedometer passing the speed limit for this area.

My heart is pulsing in my throat by the time we pull up to Garret's house, a few of the windows lit up as I park behind Shawn's mother's SUV. I honk the horn a few times before I get out, being careful to shoulder as much of Diana's weight as I can as we start limping her up the sidewalk.

The others have already begun to flood out of the house, Garret being the first person to reach us as he extends his hands toward Diana, not in a way to hold her, but to sense injuries.

"Where is she hurt?" he asks as his eyebrows furrow in confusion.

"I can't sense anything," Astrid says as she swaps with Garret and he takes Diana's other side instead.

"Neither can I," he agrees as Diana cries out like she's been burned.

"My neck," she manages to gasp out as one of her hands comes up to grab at her neckline.

There's a snap as the necklace hanging around her neck is broken when she tugs on it and I reach out to grab it before it can fall. I clench the tiny, silver barn swallow charm in my hand as I try to keep Diana from falling on her face.

"What's going on?" Ava asks as she approaches us, Shawn following close behind as he looks from me to Diana.

"We don't know," Astrid and I say in unison, though Astrid's tone is much more annoyed than mine as she rolls her eyes at me.

"In here," Garret instructs me as we manage to squeeze through the doorway into the house and head for the first door off to the left.

Garret scoops up Diana and gently lowers her onto the examination table as the paper covering crinkles under her weight. Her breath is coming out in ragged gasps as she curls in on herself, her hands shaking as Garret presses the diaphragm of a stethoscope against her back.

I reach out to touch her head and a cold hand reaches up to latch itself around my wrist as she looks up at me. Sweat is caking along her hairline, which is making the thin, dark strands stick to her too pale skin. I put her sister's necklace in my pocket for safekeeping as she wordlessly lowers her glazed eyes to stare at the wall.

"Your heartbeat is too fast," Garret says after a moment of listening to her heart.

"I can't stop it," she murmurs in a weak voice that is barely above a whisper.

"I know, I'm just trying to figure out a way to help you," he admits as he takes out the earpieces and hooks the stethoscope around his neck. "You weren't given a rabies shot for that dog bite, that's the only other thing I can think of that could even be affecting you but that was days ago and you get regular vaccines from work."

"The bite," Astrid says suddenly and I can't help but wonder what's going through her head because her tone sends a sudden chill up my spine.

"Yeah, you were there for it," I begin to say slowly but she cuts me off with a shake of her head.

"She was bitten three days ago," Astrid continues as she looks from me to Garret and I can't help but feel confused.

"So?" Ava interrupts.

"Clayton was a werewolf," Astrid whispers as she looks down at Diana, her face suddenly going pale as she takes a half-step back.

"I wasn't bitten by him," Diana pants as she shakily pushes herself into a sitting position.

She sways for a moment and shivers and digs her nails into the edge of the table as she clamps her eyes shut. They open a moment later to reveal that her pupils are dilated to the point that her eyes are nearly black.

I catch Astrid's gaze then as the pieces start to fall into place,

"No," I rasp, "but you were bitten by a dog a few days ago and Clayton was sneaking out of prison before tonight, he told me it wasn't the first time he's snuck out."

It takes a moment for my words to sink in as she blinks at me, her eyes dazed and confused before what I'm saying makes sense to her.

"Shit," she hisses.

The breath whooshes out of her then, her body going limp and her jaw going slack. Her eyes roll back to reveal the whites as she lurches backwards to collapse against the table with a heavy thud.

A/N: So this chapter had a pretty big reveal regarding poor Diana, was anyone expecting it?
