Chapter 29

"Why are ghosts always so cryptic?" Tessa groans as we sit next to each other early the next morning.

With it being spring break, we have the campus to ourselves as we sit at a picnic table near the polo field. Astrid, having sprawled herself across the other bench with a book in her hands, glances up at her over the pages.

"Sometimes it's because they don't know the whole story, sometimes they just get feelings but can't really see anything," Astrid murmurs.

I remember then that she had resurrected her boyfriend at one point, who had died in an accident. I wonder then what her boyfriend was able to tell her about the afterlife before she was forced to sever her connection with him.

"He wasn't able to tell me much, believe me, I asked about the afterlife," Astrid elaborates, almost like she can read my mind as she sits up and bookmarks her place before she sets her book aside.

"So Finn won't be able to tell us much more than what he's already said?" Tessa asks.

"He can probably read energies and knows that someone from the Hallewell clan is after Kara, but who exactly? He's probably trying to figure that out, people who come from the same family will leave similar traces of themselves and that's probably what he's picked up on," she explains as she fidgets with a strand of her blonde hair, aimlessly twisting it as she narrows her eyes.

The fact that much of her family looks so much alike probably hasn't helped her go unnoticed. The broadcasts explaining Clayton's crimes went on for weeks in the witches' world, his face plastered everywhere for the magic side to see and remember what he did. I doubt that Astrid has been able to keep her heritage a secret from anyone at her college and I feel sorry for her then.

"But seeing Finn wasn't the only thing that happened," I say and the others perk up and look to me for an explanation.

"What do you mean?" Tessa pries as she inspects one of her nails, which has been painted a bright shade of white.

"I found out that Shawn is a witch too."

Tessa's mouth drops open and her eyes go wide at this before she laughs, "Shawn Weaver? From biology? He never went to Greenwood that sneaky ba-."

I cut her off before she can continue, "He's a quarter of a witch so he wasn't able to call on his powers, but...," I glance over my shoulder and survey our surroundings for a moment to make sure that we're alone.

The only other person around is a freshman girl who is currently washing one of the horse's beside the stable. Other than her, we're alone.

"I was able to conjure his familiar for him," I admit and Tessa's eyes widen further as Astrid leans over the table.

"I didn't think a quarter witch could even have a familiar," Astrid points out and I nod in agreement.

"Exactly, but Ava had me meet up with one of her friends who had been doing research on Unfamiliars and it turns out that I can 'bind' familiars to people," I tell them, "so I think that I might have accidentally given him the power of a witch, Unfamiliars can also bind their power to people...," I swallow before I continue as I remember May's warning, "and Unfamiliars can also give up their power completely and no longer be a witch at all."

The others are silent for a long moment before Tessa clears her throat.

"No runes or anything like that? They can just-," she snaps her fingers, "banish their own magic?"

I nod and she frowns at this, "Yes, it turns out that many Unfamiliars have been tortured to give up their powers in the past."

My phone buzzes suddenly, interrupting us as I pull it out of my pocket and look at the screen to see that it's my mother calling me.

"Hello?" I venture as I answer her call.

"Kara, hi, how are you?" my mother asks and I can hear relief and concern in her voice.

"I'm fine, I've been fine," I say, "my therapist has prescribed me a new medication and things have been going a lot better for me."

It's not a complete lie, the new medication has taken the edge off of my anxiety which would otherwise leave me crippled to the point that I would much rather not get out of bed or leave my room out of fear.

"When did you last meet with her?" she pries and I wrack my brain for a moment.

"Uh, Wednesday, I went Wednesday," I manage to remember as I risk a glance at Tessa and get an idea, "here, you can talk to Tessa and Astrid, they'll tell you how much better I've been doing."

I pass the phone to Tessa even as she makes a shooing motion and shakes her head before I mouth a plea at her. She rolls her eyes as she silently takes the phone from me and relents to speaking to my mother.

"Hey, Mrs. Zen," Tessa says brightly.

I can hear that she must say something on the other side of the line but I can't make out the words as my mother talks to Tessa for a moment before she nods.

"I can assure you things have been much better for Kara, Astrid and I have both been keeping an eye on her," Tessa explains and I resist the urge to roll my eyes.

At least now I know I'm not entirely crazy, though I can't tell my mother that yet, not until I have more evidence besides talking to ghosts and playing with a Ouija board. I would just have to wait and play the part of an obedient daughter until then.

"I'll be sure to tell her, I promise," Tessa replies after a moment, "until then, I wouldn't worry much."

I hold my breath as she hangs up the phone before she turns to me.

"Okay, so she scheduled an appointment with your therapist for you tomorrow at five, she wants you to be there and you don't really have a choice not to go," she says as she passes me back my phone.

"I can do that," I agree.

"She also wants you to call Indigo sometime," Tessa adds.

"I can do that too, but later, for now, we need to figure out what our next step is," I tell them as they exchange a quick glance.

"Maybe we could try to get Finn to talk to us again?" Astrid suggests.
