Chapter 18
"Eden doesn't know about Greenwood so don't...don't mention anything about it," Diana warns me as we walk back down the staircase and take a small corridor that leads to another door on the ground floor.
"O-kay?"
She nods and opens the door to reveal a bookstore on the other side as row upon row of tall, dark shelves lined with books stand on either side of the doorway. We step through and she shuts the door behind us. There's a sudden, low boof and I startle when there's a clicking of toenails as a dog rounds the corner of a bookshelf.
The dog has long, shaggy black fur and a white chest along with a few patches of tawny fur above the eyes and near its muzzle. It bares its teeth into a snarl, a low rumble coming from it as it stands in our way like it's protecting the bookstore.
"Down, boy," Diana says as she claps her hands at the dog.
The dog's floppy ears perk up at her voice and its tail starts to wag as its brown eyes glimmer with excitement and recognition.
"Salem?" a voice suddenly calls from what sounds like a few rows over. "What did you find boy?"
A woman steps around the corner of a shelf then as the dog trots over to her, his tail wagging. The woman has pale skin and black hair that is pulled back into a ponytail as her dark eyes watch me curiously and she reaches down to pet the dog.
"Oh, you just found Officer Marshall," she coos to the dog as she glances over at Diana, "so what are you here for? Raiding the break-room pantry?"
"Maybe, I have a guest over and I haven't done enough grocery shopping lately," Diana admits as she looks from me to the woman, "Kara this is Eden."
The woman lifts a hand in an easy wave as she motions for us to follow her, "We can go hang out in the break-room, no one's been by for the last half hour or so."
I breathe in the thick smell of books as I follow her, the scent mingled with the hardwood floor as we walk behind a large desk to a door. Salem trots off then, his tail wagging as he appears to patrol the bookstore while we head for the back room. Eden leads us through a door into a kitchenette type area, a couple of dark, wooden cabinets lining the wall as a stained formica countertop serves as a perch for a coffee machine and a microwave.
The woman gestures to a small table with a couple of mismatched chairs and Diana and I take a seat as Eden riffles through the cabinets before she pulls out a plastic container and sets it on the tabletop.
"Does anyone want coffee?" she offers as she steps over to the coffee pot.
"I'll take a cup," Diana says and Eden laughs.
"Of course you do," she murmurs as she sets aside a mug that has the name 'Diana' written on it in Sharpie.
Eden turns to look at me after she's filled Diana's cup and I shake my head.
"No, thank you," I say and she shrugs.
"Suit yourself," she replies as she opens the lid on the container to reveal chocolate chip cookies.
She selects one for herself before she sits down across from me and narrows her eyes suspiciously.
"So...are you the 'difficult' teen case that Diana was handling a couple of years ago?"
Diana flinches and looks away guiltily as I sit in stunned silence for a moment. Eden backpedals when she realizes that she's right as she lifts a hand and takes a sip of her coffee.
"I don't mean to pry, I'm just curious," she sets her cup down and folds her hands to rest them on the table, "Diana didn't go into a lot of detail, but it sounded like it was a tough thing for you to go through, I just wanted to let you know that it gets better."
"How do you know?" I find myself asking her in a soft voice.
"I went through a traumatic experience, I was mugged at gunpoint several years back," she shrugs and her brow wrinkles up like she's recalling the event, "I was shot and very nearly bled out that night on the sidewalk in front of this store, but all I could think about were my kids that I would have left behind and my husband."
She smiles and looks down at the tabletop in front of her as I note the sadness in her face.
"It helps to have a cop living upstairs now, unlike the previous tenant," she pauses and looks to Diana, "though I'd still like to know how your cat manages to shed as much as she does, and the claw-marks she leaves on that poor couch of yours," Eden continues and I have to bite the inside of my mouth to keep myself from laughing.
I can only imagine how she would react if she knew about the cheetah living on the floor above her.
There's a click of toenails on the wooden floor as Salem plods into the back room, the dog's ears perking up as he wags his tail, his tongue lolling out of his mouth.
"That and Salem of course, he's supposed to be my witch-hunting dog though he's not likely to fight anyone unless they threaten me," Eden elaborates as the dog trots over to his master's side for a head-rub.
I dare to risk a glance at Diana as I find the fact ironic, here we are, two witches in her bookstore but she's none the wiser and neither is her dog. Diana merely lifts a cautious eyebrow at me and shakes her head as she takes a sip of her coffee.
"So tell me about yourself," Eden suddenly says and my attention snaps back to her as I swallow nervously.
"I'm going to therapy," I begin cautiously and she nods.
"That's good, even now I'm still going to my therapist on a weekly basis, it's not a bad thing to get help for something, even if you start to think that maybe you're overreacting," she admits, "it took me a while to finally get help, I had started to blame myself and think that maybe I should have done something different because they had robbed me of a couple thousand dollars, but even then, I can't change what happened and the only way to move forward was to get help and realize that it wasn't my fault."
I nod along with her as she says this and I can't help but feel relief in the fact that I'm not alone.
"I just, I've started to feel like I'm going crazy," I tell her and she frowns.
"How so?" she inquires as she shares a look with Diana.
"I saw...I saw a ghost of someone," I say and I can sense Diana tense up from where she's sitting next to me.
Eden merely shrugs at this, "To be honest? Living in Salem I've seen a lot of strange things, a lot of unexplainable things, if Diana doesn't mind my suggestion, I'd try contacting the spirit world, did you know this ghost?"
I dare to nod at this and she takes another sip of her coffee.
"Did they speak to you or try to warn you?"
I'm shocked by her accuracy as I answer, my breath coming out in less than a whisper, "Yes."
"I have a Ouija board you can borrow, don't give me that look, Diana," Eden mutters as she eyes Diana cautiously, "sometimes you have to meddle with the forbidden to get an answer."
She gets up then and leaves the room with Salem in tow, the clicking noise of his toenails fading as Diana and I are left in silence.
"She believes in some occult things, but a Ouija board-," Diana begins to say, but I cut her off.
"It might be a good idea, maybe it's the only way for me to get into contact with Finn so he can maybe give me more information."
"So you saw Finn?" she asks and I nod as the truth comes out.
"He knew Cynthia Heartwood...I saw his ghost a couple of nights ago and he told me to 'find her killer'," I tell her in a low voice and she shakes her head.
"Kara, why didn't you tell me about it?"
"Because it sounds crazy and I didn't want to add hallucinations and seeing ghosts to the list," I tell her honestly as Eden reappears with a long, cardboard box held in her hands.
"Here we are, I've used it before and it works, just be careful and read over this," Eden says as she passes me a small booklet.
Diana takes if from her before I can grab it as she reads over the cover.
"Interested in playing with the Ouija board, Officer Marshall?" Eden teases as she sets the box on the table.
"Hardly, but I don't want her to get into trouble," Diana murmurs as she looks the book over.
"You're going to help me?" I ask incredulously and she gives me a hesitant nod.
"What can I say? It always seems like we find our way into trouble one way or another," she says as she gives me a lopsided smile, "what better way to top it off than summoning ghosts with a Ouija board?"
There's a sudden chiming noise, like someone has entered the store as Eden quickly gets to her feet and heads out of the break room.
"Hello?" a faint voice calls and I instinctively freeze.
Something about the look on my face must worry Diana because she's on her feet and heading to the doorway with the Ouija board in her hands before I can think about what's making me nervous. I follow her closely as I dare to peek out into the bookstore.
A dark haired figure has entered the store and has their back to me as they hang a coat on a hook by the door. They turn around after a moment and I realize then what put me on edge as dark eyes meet mine and a familiar smile curves across a pale face. Their eyes flit from me to Eden before they speak.
"Hello, Aunt Eden," Ava says in a sweet voice as a wide grin spreads across her face.
