A Fresh Start

Written 2012 by VeGirl

I thought that I would be able to savour the day, cuddling up with Damon the next morning, but he left with Stefan for some kind of a vampire emergency I guessed.

Luckily I don't have to worry about stuff like that as long as I'm human, I thought. Then I realised what had just went through my mind. Wow, I hadn't even thought about turning before.

I dressed and went to Anna's room where I found her in front the mirror putting makeup on. "Did you sleep well? And did you get over the shock from yesterday?" I smiled, but only got a glare back.

"Well I slept well, but I still don't believe any of these weird things you and he's telling me." She frowned.

I just laughed at her. "Believe it or not, but don't forget to enjoy it!"

She looked quizzically at me.

"We both loved to watch 'the Vampire Diaries' on TV; don't think too much about how the hell this could be happening." I eventually after a few eye rolls got her to smile. "Come on, let's go down and get some breakfast."
I hooked her arm in mine and dragged her along on a grand tour of the Salvatore Boarding House.

"Wow, it's just like the scenes on TV." She was amazed especially as we got into the parlour. She looked around at the high ceiling with the dark beams, the dark panelled walls and the huge fireplace.

I smiled when she posed and wanted me to take her picture in front of the fireplace. As long as we were alone, she acted like a kid in a candy store. I was just glad she wasn't grumpy anymore, but I was getting hungry. "Come on, it really is breakfast time." I lead the way to the kitchen and she tagged along, looking around in awe.

When we got in through the kitchen door, Elena sat by the table and greeted us. "Good morning! Did you sleep well?"

"Yes... eventually..." I smirked, thinking of me and Damon in bed, but realised I shouldn't do that to her. "What about you?"

"I actually slept well, in Stefan's arms," she revealed which made me jump with joy, hurry up to her and give her a big hug. She laughed and hugged me back.

I suddenly looked at Anna who stood and watched us with big eyes. "We better get some food in you, before you faint again." I opened the cupboards and picked out a couple of bowls, cereal and milk, then I motioned her to come to the table and sit down. She looked a bit weird at me; like she thought I shouldn't be poking around in peoples cupboards like that, but it felt like home to me.

"It's great we have increased the number of people in this house that live of actually food and just blood-bags and bourbon," Elena said and she and I laughed.

Anna sat hard down on her chair. "Blood?!" She started to look pale again.

"Anna, bend forward," I instructed and she managed to not faint.

Yay!

We managed to get some breakfast and Anna managed not to be rude to Elena, even if she wasn't involved in our conversation. It looked like she started to believe us. The three of us had a really good time and Elena and I had a chance to take our friendship a little further. We had gotten really close the day we spent in the cell downstairs the day of the battle, and I liked to consider her my friend.

"By the way, I saw you and Bonnie at the party, what's up with the two of you, she seemed chilly."

Elena looked a bit hurt. "She's mad that I made Damon compel Jeremy to leave town. He's been through so much and started to get all homicidal-hybrid-slayer on me. Bonnie says it's not my call to decide what his life should be, but what choice would he have if he stayed here?" She really needed my reassurance.

"Maybe he could get his free choice back, when Klaus isn't such a threat?" I suggested, thinking that he could cut us some slack since we helped him. In the next moment I remembered that I was not really a part in the phrase 'we helped'.

I was still an outcast.

Anna was looking questioningly at us, so Elena and I tried to keep her up to date with everything that had happened since the last 'episode' she had seen. There were even a few surprises for me, like the incident when Stefan tried to drive Elena off Wickory Bridge.

I gasped and it showed on Elena's face that that had been tough on her. I rose and hugged her and that was the moment the guy's got back.

"Hi sweetie, I'm sorry I was gone when you woke up." Damon came over and kissed me.

"Today I was at least still in your bed, not like yesterday," I said tart.

"Yes, what was that?" he asked and looked between Anna and me.

"I didn't do anything!" she said defiantly with both hands raised. "I'm having problem just to stand upright," she added sarcastic which made us all laugh.

"Emma almost fainted as well, the first time I took her here." Damon snickered and I glared at him. "And she didn't believe us either."

"And how did you convince me, dear?"

"What, oh, you mean like this?" he said and his face changed in an instant into a red eyed vampire with grey veins around the eyes. He turned towards Anna who looked absolutely terrified at him. As if that wasn't enough, he walked behind me and bent forward aiming at my carotid artery with those lethal fangs.

"Damon!" Elena yelped.

"I thought I told you, I'm not a chew-toy!" I said and slapped his arm.

"Ouch!" he complained and Stefan snickered.

I turned to look at Anna who was shocked. "Anna, breathe!" I called and she drew a deep ragged breath and I exhaled relieved. "See, you just forget to breath, that's why you faint!" My tone might have been victorious and a bit self-righteous, but I felt giddy to be back. I remembered lack of breathing was the reason to my own fainting-spells a fortnight ago.

She glared at me.

Stefan went to the fridge, pulled out a blood-bag and poured himself a glass. I frowned but Damon gestured to his brother who poured him a glass as well and the two of them sat down with us at the table.

When Damon leaned close to kiss me I stopped him with a hand on his chest and shook my head. He snickered, knowing all too well why I did it; the blood-breath...
"You have to get over that now, vampire-girl," Damon teased.

Anna looked startled and whipped her head between the two of us.

"What do you mean?"

Elena was the one who told her about the incident when Klaus ripped my chest open and Damon had to heal me with his blood.

Anna looked shocked once again. "Klaus?! You've met Klaus?"

I shouldn't be offended that she missed the vital information that I got my chest ripped open, but I knew that Klaus had been one of her favourites when we watched them safely in front of the TV, but I couldn't help that I was a little hurt.

She didn't smile now; it looked like she finally realised that this was not some actors, playing the parts of vampires. This was the real deal.

"Klaus; ex boyfriend," Damon smirked and I turned and glared at him.

"It's not like I asked him to compel me!" I yelled, really irritated being reminded of it all the time. I rose from the chair and walked out of the kitchen.

"Come on!" I heard Damon's voice behind me but I kept going. Suddenly he stood in front of me. "I'm sorry, it just hurt," he said with a whisper and took my face in between his hands. I could easily see the pain in his eyes, just as easy as I had seen it when I met him in the Grill.

"It wasn't my fault!" I almost whined. He ignored it and hugged me instead. "Ask Stefan if he asked to be compelled," I murmured, but was so glad to be in his arms that I couldn't resist him.

He put a hand on my cheek, turning me to face him. "I'm sorry, I won't say it again." He kissed me.

In the afternoon we decided to have a barbecue, the four of us. I was all set up to go to the supermarket for some grocery shopping, but Stefan just called them and had food delivered to the house instead.

The brothers had of course a big flashy barbecue in the back patio which they hadn't fired up that much in the past. We had a really good time preparing the salad and got along fine by now, and even Anna joked.

"What? Anna cracked a funny?" Damon teased her and she stuck her tongue out at him. He gaped but I could see his eyes glittering with humour.

The delivery arrived and Anna, Elena and I sat around the table in the garden furniture when Stefan came and placed the steaks on the barbecue grid.

"What, you're not gonna eat it raw?" Anna said. Elena and I looked at each other and gaped at her cockiness. She seemed to really have gotten over the shock by now. Damon's look at her revealed he was up to something.

When Anna a little while later got up from the chair, Damon launched himself at her. Elena gasped startled, but I just smiled and saw an instant later how he lay on the grass in a hand lock, with Anna beside him. He got up and glared surprised at her.

"Anna is my Aikido-trainer," I said calm with an additional smile.

Elena laughed, remembering the training session we had two weeks earlier, where I had been able to defend myself from Damon quite well.

Well, until he used his vampire speed and strength against me, that is.

I told Anna the story and she smiled proudly. "That's good. Don't want you to get out of shape."

Caroline showed up and joined us at the table.

Anna was of course startled and her cockiness disappeared as soon as another character from our favourite show was presented in person.

"So, what's the thing about you and Klaus?" I asked and Anna whipped her head up at the mentioning of his name.

"What do you mean? He came and healed me after Tyler bit me." She spat out her boyfriend's name, or maybe former boyfriend. "And then he wished me a happy birthday," she mumbled quietly.

Elena and I stared at each other with smiles bubbling up, about to erupt.
