Dee was taking advantage of the blackout in the city to read some books that were sitting on her shelf. Reading by candlelight was something the young girl was beginning to appreciate, since it had been three days without light and no one knowing when things would return to normal. That day she had reached the mark of four books completed, and now she was fighting with her sleep to add one more to the list.
Dee didn't leave the room even when her parents called her to see something extraordinary in the sky. Something to do with floating colored dots or another weird stuff like that. She didn't let go of the book, and the accumulated sleep of the previous day didn't let go of her either.
Sleep defeated her with three pages to go.
When she woke up, Dee was surprised by the silence in the house and in the streets. She was also puzzled by the blue-bladed sword she was holding... a weapon much like the one the Golden Knight, the protagonist of her book, used to defeat her enemies.
"Hurry up, reader!" We need to find the other eight readers and go find the Librarian!"
A dwarf dressed in a stark yellow robe told her from the doorway of her house. Dee followed the strange being to the street and was startled to see pterodactyls flying over the city, being chased by flying saucers. In the street, an open sewer showed the tentacle of some monster grabbing a troll who was screaming for his life. From one side to the other, more creatures that seemed to have escaped from some fantasy movie took over the neighborhood, chasing other children. Where were the adults? The authorities?
"Hurry knight! The seven readers await us! We have to find the librarian!"
The dwarf urged.
"Wasn't it eight?" Dee questioned.
Why did she asked that above all the things that crossed her mind? She couldn't tell. The dwarf looked at her seriously and answered.
"Yes, they were. Now they are not. Let's go before it's only six!"
