Let The Spirits Decide
Midori felt the weight of the briefcase in her right hand. How could something weighing less than twenty pounds weigh so much? Perhaps it was the weight it placed on her conscience, she thought. Choices have weight and consequence, that's what his sister Maya kept telling her. She was always dismissive of what seemed to her to be her sister's shamanic quackery.
Even if her faith was correct, Midori had no choice.
The scientists needed to study the behavior of the virus in the suitcase, and the time that the bureaucracy would take to extend the experiment to humans was simply not enough to save the few who already had their lives at risk because of that disease. If nothing was done, the sick would die.
Maya would die.
Midori's employers were willing to infect a poor part of town in order to study the virus in a controlled environment, as they and other mega corporations were ready to "assist" in isolating that neighborhood when the outbreak reached the media. "It's for the greater good." that's what she heard from her bosses, and that's what she kept telling herself.
"For the greater good. For science. For the cure... for Maya." Still, Midori couldn't make peace with her choice. Maybe that's why she let information about her operation leak into the Matrix. Most likely, it was too late for anyone to try to stop her, but the truth would be discovered in time. Or maybe the "spirits" that Maya followed would guide the right people to the leaked data, and someone would come to stop her. Whatever the result of that mission, she had done what Maya kept asking her: "Have faith in the spirits, sister."
Now the ball was in the spirit's court. If spirits really existed and gave a shit about humanity, someone would show up to stop her.
Someone had to show up.
