Chapter 12. The quiet one

{Location: The dead man's jungle}(Seliel's POV)

Harumi stays behind me as I hack thought tree vines. Last night's crash tweaked my shoulder. We only rested for about two hours before moving thought this hot jungle again.

Harumi touches me, "Are you sure that we shouldn't look for Morro? He might have a better idea of where the temple is."

Gezze, how oblivious is this girl? Morro and the others are on the other side of the jungle, more concerned with getting the ship back up and running, "We can't go back. And plus we have the map. We just have to keep going until we get to the temple."

"Ok," she pushes me back, taking my kama, "At least let me cut a little. You need to rest that arm."

"Fine." I smile I look at the map. Trying to find where we are on it.

I snap up as motorcycle engines echo through the jungle. I growl as there is river ahead of us, "The sons of garmadon. They must have another map."

"Where do we go?" Harumi gives me back my kama.

"Here," I point to an abandoned boat, "Motorcycles can't float."

I step on, helping her up. There's a long pole near the front, used for feeling the shallow waters. Harumi starts the engine as we sail forward. I pull my helmet off, feeling around.

Harumi sings to herself as the birds' chirp. She slows the boat, "Can I ask you a question?"

"Anything."

"Did you meet him? Lord Garmadon. The one that the sons of garmadon are trying to bring back."

"No. I've only heard the stories. And I don't like any of them." I bite my lower lip as my shoulder flares up. "A little to the right."

"Another question, what would you do with that resurrection power? Bring back your mother?" Harumi looks down, "I'm sorry. Hutchins sharded everything he researched about you with me. I know about that night."

"It's fine. Not like it's a big secret." I feel the water, something's bumping the boat, "I wouldn't. I miss her terribly. But from how I understand the ritual, she wouldn't be the same." My heart aches for my mom's touch, her protectiveness of me and her smile. If only she knew that we were Dragonborn. Just another thing I can't tell her. "She was amazing, so was my friend Marci Black. But I wouldn't want them to come back like that."

"What was that night like? When the ninjdroes attacked."

"Awful. They were, still are my worst enemy. I pictured the ninja coming to save me."

"And when they didn't?"

"I felt abandoned. I wanted to cause them the same pain they gave me." I'm almost over it. It's easier to forgive Cole but I think it's something I'll always carry, "I got over it. Saving the world over my pettiness."

"You said that the ninjadrods were your worst foe. They weren't."

"They were bad. But that might be an overstatement. Have you heard of the Nom crime family? Mabey Victor Crown?"

"No. That's not what I mean." Harumi starts fighting with the wheel, "Your greatest enemy is the one who gets away. The one you never see coming."

"The quiet one." I hum. Who is the quiet one?

Something bumps the boat again. I can feel the stick getting stuck in the rocks. "Shoot." The water behind us explodes outward, showing some kind of river monster, "CRAP! Harumi, go faster."

"This is as fast as it goes."

I pat around, holding throwing daggers. "Get behind me."

The monster is some kind of spider crab thing. I aim for it's biggest eye but it scricks, running away.

Harumi shakes like a leaf, "Where's he going?"

I look to the front. Today isn't my day. I put my knives away as I scramble to the front, "Get to the wheel. Reverse!"

She tries only for the engine to break, "I can't." She screams at the waterfall we're heading down, "WHAT DO WE DO?"

I grab her. I have to time this just right. I pull on my helmet, popping my wings, "Grab onto me." She grips me in an iron hug.

3. 2. 1!

I jump as the boat goes over. My wings tremble and shake before breaking apart. We crash into the water. I yank my helmet off, helping Harumi up. She lays down, exhausted. I look up to see a large cave with teeth, "We made it."

"We survived."

"No, look." I help her up as I find a path up, "We made it."

"The temple." She stays close to me as I lead the way over wet stone steps, "Perhaps we should wait for the others. Morro might know what's inside."

I step onto the cave's mouth, tiny 1 by 1footstoness decorates a path to the rest of the cave, "We know what's inside. Let's just get you safe and secure that mask."  I venter forward. On a few of the pillars are symbols. They shake until they turn to English, "Don't step on those, they break." I look away for a second as the roof slides down, "I said not to touch it."

"I didn't," Harumi hops as I break for the stairwell, "It must be a trap."

The entrance closes as the rocks threaten to drop us. I push her forward as the ground slips under me. I narrowly grab the ledge as I pull myself up. Harumi backs up into a dark hallway, "I can't see anything."

I touch my belt, a handheld light pops out, I pull it out, shining it on the path forward, "Better?"

She nods before pointing to something, "Are those words?"

All around us are the same markings, and lines that change to English for me. "Only those from the first realm, Oni made or Dragonborn can take the mask of hate. -Quivu."

She swallows hard as we come to a dead end, "Where's the mask?"

I touch the walls, finding the same symbol on the wall from earlier, "It's a false wall. If we break it, I bet the mask is there."

"Wait," Harumi's voice echoes in the cave, "We're surrounded by water. Breck the wrong wall and we'll drown."

I pull my helmet off, placing it on her head, "This should give you a little oxygen. Enough to swim out." Now how to break a stone wall? Dragon power. I don't have that yet. I don't even know how to access it. I wish Cole was here. He could blink and the thing would fall. I feel around the edges, finding a dime sized hole. "Stay back." I step back, running into it shoulder first.

The wall crumbles to show a large rock, a path to the rock and the last Oni mask in some kind of blue aura.

Harumi pulls off my helmet, almost dropping it into the cave river, "The mask of hatred." She walks to it as I leave my helmet on the side. I put away my flashlight as I follow her. Harumi tries to touch it, only to jerk her hands away from a sting. She looks at me, "Take it. Let's just get the mask and leave."

Something's not right.

It's probably just the mask.

I reach for it slowly, my hands passing through the aura.

Harumi whimpers, "Please. I-I want to get out of here. Back to Morro. You're a Dragonborn. Just hurry."

I freeze.

"What's wrong?"

"I didn't tell you." I pull my hands back as my nails scrap the mask. I run through a list in my head, she left for her lipstick before my prophecy was told. She wasn't at the tea shop, "How do you know I'm a Dragonborn?"

"You told me." She smiles but looks at the mask.

"You weren't on deck when Sensei explained." No, no. She can't be. That's impossible. "Only Morro was with me when I found out."

"Then Morro told me." She smiles a lover's smile, "You know how he's head over heels in love with me."

"Morro's dating Katara. And he's very committed." I back away from her, "You know because you're the quiet one."

"What?" Her hands swing behind her as she follows me, "I'm not. How can I prove that I'm not the quiet one?"

If Morro did tell her, he also would have told her about Mistaké, "Who told me? Who told me my lineage?"

Harumi scoffs, "I know." There's a glimmer of hope that I'm wrong. That's she's just a princess who knows too much. She smiles, holding something behind her back, "Sensei Wu. Can we please-"

"You ARE the quiet one!" I can't believe it. I hold my kama as she follows me, "How could you?"

"Seliel, how could you SAY THAT?" She lunges at me with a dagger. She sneers as I dance around the blade, "I knew it was smart to keep you close. And I thought I would need Morro to fall for me."

"The royal family? Hutchins?"

"Not my parents." She plays with her knife. I know that smile on her face. It matches Jezzie's, Victor's and any crook I've fought. Harumi points it at me, "They died when the Ninja failed to stop the great devourer." She lunges.

I catch her blade between my kama, "They did all they could."

"They failed." She switches hands, trying to stab me, "It wasn't until Lord Garmadon killed it, saving us all." She makes a pouty face, "Did you think everyone survived the devourer's rampage?"

"You're insane." I block, trying to get away from the mask.

"NO, I'm right. They failed." She calms down, not losing her crazy look, "They failed the both of us."

I drop, kicking out her knees, "That was a long time ago."

She crawls back up, "Old scars are hard to heal!" She circles me, trying to kill me.

I kick her off, nearly rolling off the edge, "You invited us into the palace. You've been manipulating both sides."

"Yes," she swipes at me, "And I'd have that mask sooner if Kit didn't get in between me and Wu during the speech."

"You were going to kidnap him, come here just so you can have the mask?" I block everything as her knife grazes my armor, "Why? Why?"

"So I could make them feel how I feel!" She thrusts her knife at me, "The ninja let my parents die. They let your mother die. How many more do they have to fail before you see that? All I want, all that I've dreamed about since that day was to ruin their world the way they ruined mine."

She slashes, stomping the path out. It crumbles as the mask watches us, "When they come back, their world will be in shambles. Broken inside. Just like me." She cackles as she holds my helmet, slowly dragging her knife over its face, "Like you."

I can't leave. She knows where the mask is. She'll find another way to get the mask of hatred. I drop my kama as I grab the mask. It's purple, yellow eyes and fills me with a need to destroy it, "You don't deserve this power." I threaten to drop it into the river.

"NO!" She drops my helmet and her knife.

"Why should I give you the mask? Give me one good reason."

"I'll give you 2." She slowly creeps closer, "We're friends. And 2, you want them to suffer."

I hold the mask against my chest. Closing my eyes, holding in tears.

I've never said it. But that's true. Something dark in me that wants revenge.

"Yes," Harumi steps closer, "Think of all the good we can do together. An oni mask wearer and a Dragonborn. Or we can destroy their precious Ninjago. We can do whatever we please. And when the Ninja return, we can hunt them like the spineless cowards they are." She reaches out, begging me to give it up, "Just give me the mask."

I can't...can I?

The grudge hurts everytime I see them. All but one.

Cole.

I smile as my choice is clear, "That sounds good, but my boyfriend is one of them. So." I drop the mask.

"NO!" She jumps after it.

I look down to see her gripping a rock. She looks up, slowly putting on the mask as she cackles.

What'd I do? I back up, grabbing my kama as she jumps up.

She kicks her knife to me, "Let's make this fight a little more fair."

I grab it, throwing it at her chest. It shatters as she cackles. She runs up, smacking me around. I pull back as I put my helmet on, "There's no such thing as a fair fight. My friends will come for me. We will win."

"Not this time. Not when I resurrect Lord Garmadon." She makes a come at me gesture.

I charge her, clipping my kama into her. I back up as they fall apart.

She uppercuts my jaw, "Where's that dragon strength now?" She taunts as engines rumble outside, "You're lucky that I have a ceremony to commence." She jumps to the other side of the cave. Punching her way through the rock.

I push myself up as the water fills up. I grab my helmet as I take a deep breath.
