Chapter 13

Christina

Uncle James' office at Burrow's field was huge. The office was easily the size of her and Ruby's living room and kitchen put together. One wall was floor to ceiling windows. It looked out over the practice field. On the walls hung action shots of current and former Wyvern players. Several trophies were in a case that looked like they were shined to perfection. The huge mahogany desk had an organized chaos of papers on his desk. His laptop sat in the middle closed. Two incredibly comfortable looking chairs faced his desk. A matching love seat sat diagonally to the desk and two chairs.

Christina walked up to her smiling uncle and gave him a hug. She knew when she first asked him for help that he would. His face lit up with hope and excitement. His excitement was contagious. He waved her to sit down in one of the comfy chairs. She barely held back a moan when she sat down.

"Thank you for coming over today, Christina. I have something I'd like to talk to you about. "

"Of course, Uncle James. "

Before he could continue, the door to his office burst open. A man strode in carrying a stack of papers and mumbling to himself. Slamming the door behind him, he continued over to the love seat and took a seat. Christina looked at the harsh stranger. His hair was immaculately styled away from his handsome face. He had hazel eyes framed with long lashes. His aquiline nose gave him an air of nobility and his lips were pinched tight in a grimace. The well fitted charcoal suit fit his swimmer's body as if it were tailored for him. His shined to perfection shoes looked never before worn.

"Oh good. Glad you could make it, Simon. Christina I'd like you to meet Simon Smythe. Simon is our PR director." Simon glared at her.

"Of course, I would be here, James. You want to use nepotism to fill the newest position I designed and got approved. You are not going to hire someone who is not qualified just because they are related to you. At least you won't do that with my department." Simon crossed his arms in a huff.

"Pardon me but I have no idea what is going on here."

Simon narrowed his eyes at her. "Well, your Uncle James here wants to put you into the position of manager of non-profit/community-based activities."

Christina crinkled her brow in confusion. "Why would you think this is a good job for me?"

James smiled. "What the title doesn't say is that you would be in charge of managing the charitable time and activities that all the players are involved in. You would be helping to foster and manage new and existing relationships with charities and the player or players who work with them."

Christina felt butterflies in her stomach. Now, the job sounded right up her alley. "Wow. That sounds like a fantastic job with a lot of different opportunities."

"I think this would be a perfect fit for you." James smiled again. Simon huffed.

"Do you think you are even qualified for this position, Ms. Scott?"

"Yes, I do."

Over the next hour, Christina went through her entire resume. All her experience with S.E.M, her experience with charities, social media, public relations and especially wrangling giant man children, aka: famous athletes. She discussed with Simon and Uncle James the job, their expectations, her vision of the job and her past with athletes. Though it was difficult, Christina explained to Simon what happened with her previous job. When she was done telling her tale he sat in silence looking at her.

"I don't give a rat's ass what happened over there. You clearly have a fantastic background and would be the perfect fit. We don't have rules regarding fraternization with players. I do mind if fraternization hurts our relationship with any charities. Date who you want, screw who you want, marry who you want, but do not fuck up those non-profits. Got it."

"Yes, but I didn't-"Simon put his hand up.

"I think we are done. I will see you tomorrow, Christina." Simon smiled for the first time showing a dazzling set of white teeth. He got up and left the same way he came.

"So, that was Simon. He is a unique soul."

"I got that. Did I really get the job?" Christina asked.

"Of course, you did, Poppin. Despite what Simon said, I wouldn't have just had the job handed to you. If you weren't qualified I would have made sure I found something or given your name to someone that had a job that better fit you. I think you are going to do wonderfully."

Christina stood and walked around the enormous desk and hugged him. "Thank you, Uncle James."

Christina walked out of her uncle's office in a daze. Things were moving so fast she could barely wrap her mind around them. Standing at the elevators she tried to remember what floor she needed to go for human resources. The ding from the elevator startled her and she walked blindly into the elevator. When she walked into a warm hard chest she squeaked and looked at the person she'd just run into. Finley's crystal blue eyes and strong arms encircled her.

"Hi." He said.

"Hi." Christina tried moving out of his grasp, but he squeezed her tighter to him. "Please let me go."

Finley startled and seemed to realize he was still holding her. "I'm sorry, dove. I don't know what came over me."

"It's fine." Christina smoothed down her suit nervously and pushed the floor she remembered she needed to go to.

"It's good to see you." He smiled at her.

"Yeah. I meant to text you, but some things came up."

"I understand. I've been busy with practice and games. Will you be at the game this weekend?"

"Oh. I don't know. I don't have tickets or anything if that's what you mean."

Finley laughed. "Dove, you don't need to buy tickets. Your uncle is the manager, two of your cousins play on the team and if none of them would find you a seat I'd give you a ticket."

"I didn't think about that. I guess I could come." Christina looked at her shoes. She was doing everything she could to look anywhere but at his reflection in the polished doors of the elevator.

"Good." A few more moments of tense silence filled the elevator car. Finally, the doors stopped, and she charged out the doors eager to be away from the tension that enveloped them. She heard laughing behind her. She turned and saw Finley laughing and holding the doors to the elevator open.

"What?"

"Look around, Christina." She turned around and noticed there were a lot of sweaty guys milling around. She blushed and rushed back to the elevator.

"You could have just said I got off on the wrong floor you prick."

"Yes, but you were so intent on leaving the elevator who am I to stop a lady on a mission." He smiled and let the doors go.

"Oh, piss off." She said softly but not soft enough because she heard laughing outside of the elevator as it started to move again.

A few hours later, Christina was exhausted. Her paperwork was completely filled out and she even managed to talk them into letting her watch some required videos so that she wouldn't waste time on her first day. Now, her brain felt fuzzy and all she wanted to do was take an Uber back to her aunt and uncle's house.

Her heels clicked on the marble of the lobby as she crossed from the elevator to the door. She had a strange feeling of being watched. Goosebumps prickled on her arms and the hair on her neck stood on end. Before stepping out toward the street she glanced behind her and didn't see anyone. Shrugging she continued toward the street where she monitored the Uber's progress on her phone.

"Need a ride?" Christina jumped at the sound of the deep voice.

"Finley? How are you still here?"

"We had a team meeting after our work out. So, you're going to work for the Wyverns?"

"How did you find out? I got hired today."

"Your cousins are a bunch of gossips. Not to mention incredibly proud of you. I heard them talking about how your uncle was going to get you a job here."

"Oh. I'm sure you think I was just given the job because of my uncle."

"I don't think that at all. I'm actually really happy you won't be leaving anytime soon. Now, about that ride?" He smiled. Christina finally took the time to really look at him. When she saw him in the elevator he was wearing workout wear. Now he had on jeans and a grey t-shirt that molded to his sculpted chest. His hair was still damp from his shower.

"Ok." She found herself saying.
