40| Horrible Planning
"This was a stupid plan." I told Stiles as I shoved the sandwiches into his hands. At the moment anything that Stiles did made me angry, though it was nothing new. The simplest things like blinking or breathing was making me want to rip him apart limb from limb. I couldn't even explain why I felt so angry. "I mean you've come up with some pretty stupid plans but this one has to be the worst."
"You know, I don't need all of this negativity from you right now." Stiles replied clearly doing his best to try to not yell at me. But that was almost what I wanted him to do, I wanted him to yell at me. Give me a reason to feel angry, because I couldn't find one myself. "What's so bad about this plan anyway?"
I looked at him in disbelief wondering whether or not he was being serious. "Where do I start?" I asked as my hands became fist. "The kidnapping of Jackson? The stealing of a police vehicle? Or how about us missing school for maybe the fifth time this month?"
"If you're so worried about school why didn't you just go back in town with Scott and Allison?"
"We'll I couldn't really leave you alone in the middle of the woods, with Jackson who turns into a homicidal lizards now could I?" I snapped as I ran a hand through my hair in frustration. Then I realized that this anger wasn't mine.
It was my brother's.
My brother who currently had every reason to be mad considering that I left him and our pack to go camping with Stiles in the middle of nowhere. A part of me still couldn't believe that I was going against my brother, but we were on completely different sides now.
"I'm sorry." I suddenly whispered before I could stop myself. But the truth was that the fact that I wasn't in full control of my abilities as the pack link was frustrating. The extent of what I could do was unclear to me, and now I only craved wanting to know more about myself.
"Those are words that I never thought you would say to me." Stiles said as he leaned against the van, and although I knew he was trying make light of the situation it really wasn't working.
"Shut up." I replied as I crossed my arms over my chest, taking a deep breath and trying to take control over the anger I felt. A weird silence came over the two of us and I could practically hear Stiles' brain working to find something to talk about. Considering a couple of minutes had passed and he had yet to say anything I figured that he simply had nothing to say.
Without another word Stiles went inside the van to talk to Jackson and give him the food that I had to go into town to get. I only heard parts of their conversation as Stiles attempted to explain to Jackson what he was and how dangerous he was. But of course he didn't believe a word Stiles was telling him.
Not long after Stiles came back outside clearly frustrated with the conversation that he just had with Jackson. "There's no point in talking to him."
I was about to say that its was obvious that he wouldn't listen when I suddenly saw Allison running towards us.
"They know." Allison exclaimed, and she didn't have to say anything else fro me to know exactly what she was talking about.
"What?" I said immediately turning to Stiles who promised me that there was absolutely no way that Jackson's family would know that he was missing.
"They know Jackson's missing." Allison told us out of breath. It was clear that she ran here and her fear and anxiety was the only thing I could smell.
"No, they can't. I've been texting his parents since last night." Stiles told her frantically, but it was clear that he was beginning to doubt every word that was coming out of his mouth. They don't have a clue.
"My grandfather told me his parents went to the police." She stressed. "They know."
Stiles frantically pulled out Jackson's cell phone in disgust and disbelief. Tossing the phone aside he quickly opened the door to the van turning on the radio.
"All available units proceed to beacon hills preserve as instructed. Proceed with caution until Sheriff Stilinski's arrival. Proceed with caution." An officer ordered, and I couldn't say I was surprised I knew we wouldn't be able to keep this up much longer.
"I don't have to remind you that this was a stupid plan do I?" I questioned as Stiles tried to help me into the van, but I immediately pulled my hand away. Allison didn't wait another second as she got into the van after me.
"Where are we going?" Allison questioned as she settled herself in as Stiles slammed the van door closed.
Stiles ran around the front of the van getting into the drivers seat and starting the car without a moment of hesitation. "Somewhere very far from this."
"If Jackson doesn't remember being the Kanima, he's definitely not gonna remember stealing Danny's tablet." Scott said as he finished telling us how Danny was able to recover the full video that Jackson filmed of himself the first night that he turned.
But of course it was now missing. Another problem added to the pile.
Although we were now far away from the original place where we were had Jackson, there was no changing the fact that they were now looking for him. And that his parents were some of the most important people in this town so, that meant they had more resources towards finding him.
"Why would he steal the thing if he doesn't even know what's on it?" Stiles questioned seeming to run millions of ideas through his head. "What if someone else took it?"
"Then somebody else knows what he is." I said seeing everything continue to complicate itself. We were way in over our heads and I was just beginning to see that. I trusted Scott, but I couldn't help but think that maybe I was wrong and that he wouldn't be able to solve this problem.
"Which could mean someone's protecting him." Allison continued. "Like the bestiary says, the Kanima seeks a friend, right?"
"Okay, hold on." Stiles said forcing all of us into silence, and you could practically see the gears in his head turning as he processed all this new information. "So, somebody watches Jackson make a video of himself turning into the Kanima, and then just erases part of it so he wouldn't know? I mean who would do that?"
"Somebody who wanted to protect him?"
"There's something else." Scott quickly added seeming slightly unsure about the situation. "You said the only thing you found online about the Kanima is that it goes after murderers. What if that's actually true?"
"Well, no, it can't be. Tried to kill all of us, remember?" Stiles quickly reminded him. "I don't know about you three, but I haven't murdered anybody lately."
"But I...I don't think that it was actually trying to kill us." Scott said seeming to still be putting the pieces together himself. And although I was beginning to understand what he was trying to tell us none of it made any clear sense. "Remember when we were at Isaac's the first time, it just went right by us, didn't it? And it didn't kill you in the mechanic's garage."
"Well, yeah, but it tried to kill me. Alex and Derek in the pool." Stiles countered immediately.
"Did it?"
A part of me wanted to find a flaw in what Scott was trying to tell us. "It was waiting for us to come out."
"What if it was trying to keep you in?" Scott told me, and I couldn't deny that everything that he was dying made sense now. That he was probably right and he didn't understand half of what was going on with Jackson and whoever was controlling him.
Stiles looked horrified as he met all of our eyes. "Why do I feel so violated all of a sudden?"
"Because there's something else going on. We don't know what it is." Scott exclaimed, clearly frustrated with the sudden turn of events. This wasn't as black and white as it was before, and that only brought complications. "We don't know anything about what's going on with Jackson, or why someone's protecting him."
"Know thy enemy." Allison whispered. "Just something my grandfather said."
"The Art of War." I said to her recognizing the line from the book. "Sun Tzu"
"You know it?" She asked me surprised, which I understood considering that it was a work that wasn't widely read. Though I wasn't surprised she had considering she came from a family of hunters who deep study military and fighting tactics.
"Derek made me read it a while back."
"All right, I got it. Kill Jackson." Stiles suddenly declared. "Problem solved."
"He risked his life for us." Scott immediately countered. "Against Peter, you remember that?"
"It's funny how he just got exactly what he wanted by supposedly risking his life for us, it's funny."
"I hate saying this, but I think I'm starting to agree with Stiles." I stated beginning to feel that this was something that we wouldn't be able to deal with. Sure, in the ideal situation we would be able to save Jackson, but that was starting to seem less possible as we continued to discuss what we were going to do. "Jackson wasn't helping us because he cared, he wanted the bite from my brother. Which turned him into the literal monster that he is. Why should we help him?"
"Yeah, it doesn't mean he's not still worth saving." Scott remind us, and I could only wonder where he got his optimism from. Although all the odds were stacked against us, Scott still seemed to believe that we would be able to solve this without anyone else getting hurt.
"It's always something with him, though." Stiles muttered.
Scott shook his head, almost like he couldn't believe what he was hearing. "He doesn't know what he's doing."
"So what?"
"So, I didn't either. You remember when I almost killed you and Jackson?" Scott stated before he turned to me. "Alexis I had you there the whole time to keep me under control."
"Well, you never actually listened to any of my warnings." I countered remembering the times I told him to avoid playing lacrosse and his refusal to miss any of the games, because he was obsessed with impressing Allison.
"Point is. I had someone to stop me. He has nobody."
"That's his own fault." I remind Scott, as I thought about everything that Jackson did while we were attempting to deal with my uncle. "Maybe if he wasn't such an asshole he would actually have people that care about him."
"Doesn't matter. If we can save him, we should try."
