39| Not A Monster

I looked at my brother for any sign of recognition. He didn't know that Jackson was in the house to begin with. There was the possibility that he still had no idea who this monster really was, which meant that Scott possibly had an advantage now.

Without a word Derek ran after the Kanima that was now half way down the street. This thing was fast, faster than any of us, even my brother who was an alpha. Derek didn't have to say word as I ran after him, there was no way in hell that I would let my brother go up against this thing on his own. I heard someone shout my name, but I wasn't bothered to even look back as I struggled to catch up.

As we continued to run for what seemed like miles I felt myself starting to get tired, something that I never really felt. And it wasn't until he reached what seemed like an abandoned factory at the edge of the city that I realized just how much and how far we had run. Derek stopped so abruptly that I almost ran into him and I almost fell back trying to avoid doing so.

I looked around, but the Kanima was nowhere to be seen. But I knew it was here I could feel it. And from the way my brother was desperately looking around I knew he did too.

"Where is it?" I whispered and at that moment I realized that I spoke too soon when a hissing sound came from right over our heads.

Derek and I looked up to find the Kanima right over us, before we even had time to react it jumped down landing between to two of us. Looking at that thing up close, I found it hard to believe it was Jackson.

My brother reacted first as he lunged himself at the Kanima, and I didn't hesitate to the same. But as we fought the thing it was clear that it was much stranger than us. Much stronger than me at least as I suddenly found myself being thrown through the air and crashing against one of the cement pillars.

Although being thrown across the air had become almost a daily occurrence now since my brother and I returned to Beacon Hill, I still get overcome by anger every time that I did. Until this point I had tried to avoid shifting, a part of me wanting to believe that I didn't ned to use that force on the beast that I knew was Jackson, but now I was just angry and frustrated.

Standing up I brushed off the ruble from the pillars, at the moment my brother was using a car door to protect himself from the thrashing of the Kanima's claws. Without a second thought I forwards digging my claws into the Kanima's side, causing it to screech in what didn't seem like pain but annoyance. The feeling of the warm blood flowing down my arm made me pull away, kicking the Kanima in the stomach sending the thing against the pillar as it had done to me moments before.

I was about to go for another attack before I froze remembering that the Kanima wasn't just a thing, it was Jackson. And Jackson was many things, but he wasn't in control of what he was doing. That much I was sure.

My brother walked over to me as we both looked down at the Kanima. Derek began to growl telling me he was about to start fighting with the creature again, but as he raised his hand I got a tight hold of his wrist.

He was about to say something before I heard the distant sound of tires against gravel, I knew that it was the sound of Stiles' Jeep. And although I wasn't sure who was headed our way I knew that there weren't many people that would be out here, especially this late.

Without thinking I pulled on my brother's arm, pushing him behind one of the cement pillars. "What are you doing?" Derek asked, about to go after the Kanima again. But my grip on his arm was tight.

"Someone's coming." I told him in a whisper as suddenly the screeching of tires coming to a sudden stop. The headlights from the car were blinding and even as we looked behind the pillar we could only see the outline of the Kanima.

"The Argents." He whispered as suddenly the sound of gunshots was heard. I looked around the corner to see Chris Argent shooting at the Kanima, not missing a shot. Once he finished shooting a whole round and was about to load another I felt myself move forward, but I was immediately pulled down by my brother. I knew it would have been incredibly stupid of me to reveal myself to the Argents, but I knew I couldn't let them kill Jackson either.

In that moment the Kanima through Chris Argent against a pillar, when Gerard Argent stepped out of the truck. Derek and I watched as the Kanima and the oldest Argent stood face to face, neither one of them making the first move. They almost seemed connected or unwilling to hurt the other.

"Come on let's go." Derek ordered and just as we were about to slip away I felt Scott approaching us. Although I followed my brother I turned around in time to see Scott push the Kamina away from Gerard. I wondered if my brother had also noticed this, but he didn't say anything as he tried to put as much distance between us and the Argents and possible. And now not only did we know that the Argents were also hunting the Kanima tonight but we had also lost track of Jackson.

"What do you know?" Derek questioned as he came to a stop, and I looked at him speechless because although I knew exactly what he was asking I couldn't tell him the truth. "You know who that thing is don't you?"

"No. I don't" I told him firmly, trying to keep my heart beating as steady as possible.

"If you don't know who that is then why do you care if the Argent kill it or not? We already know the Kanima isn't Lydia or one of your friends." He continued to ask, and I was beginning to feel like a child being scolded by their parent. And that animal instinct in me which knew that Derek was my alpha wanted to tell him everything that I knew.

"Because that's still a person." I argued, hoping that it would be enough for Derek. "A person who has no control in what they're doing."

"You really are starting to sound a lot like Scott." He continued with an accusing tone.

"Well, Scott always seems to do the right thing."

My brother seemed hurt and at that moment I wished that I could just take back everything that I had just said. "We are doing the right thing."

"It doesn't feel that way." I admitted feeling that I needed to tell him the truth, and by doing so he would see that he was in the wrong. "Lately it feels like we're the bad guys. Not the Kanima and not the Argents. Us, because if we continue trying to kill the Kanima we aren't any better than the Argents. We become murderers like them."

"We can talk about this later." Derek said although I knew that we weren't. Because we never did talk about the things that did matter.

He began to walk in the direction that we saw the Kanima head towards, but he too broke into a run. I stood there almost frozen for a second before I ran after him, something that I realized I was beginning to do too much of lately.

From across the street my brother watched as more men entered the night club. If Jackson really was inside I had no idea what he could want inside or what we were going to do to get him out without hurting anyone.

"Are you sure that it came this way?" My brother asked skeptically, and although I was extremely sure that Jackson was inside I didn't feel like I should tell my brother how I knew. If I did it would only make him more angry at me. I had only followed Scott and Stiles' scent and it lead me here, if I told my brother that he would immediately assume that I was on their side. And I guess in a way I was.

"I am." I told him simply.

"But the thing doesn't even have a scent."

I looked at him beginning to feel a slight hint of resentment towards my own brother. But I immediately pushed those feeling down and looked away. "Can't you just trust me?"

"Come on let's go." Derek said as he took a step forward, but stopped once he realized that I hadn't followed.

"I don't think this is my kind of club." I told him as he only gave be a confused look. "Look at who's going inside Derek."

My brother turned around and for the first time he seemed to notice what kind of club this actually was as the realization suddenly became clear on his face.

"Anyways I'm underaged." I reminded him. "I wouldn't be able to get in through the front."

"Fine then just wait out here." Derek said as he pulled out his wallet and began to look for his ID. "I draw the Kanima out of the club and you be ready to take it down."

"Yeah, I'm really going to take down the Kanima on my own." I replied crossing my arms over my chest. "Where is your pack of teenagers when you need them anyways?"

My brother looked at me for a moment with a look I couldn't really place. But that look made me almost shrink back in fear. "Alexis..."

"I know wait our here." I said beginning to repeat what he had just told me. "Wait for the Kanima...try to take it down."

"Alexis..." He said again seeming to be at a loss of words. "I'll be right back."

I watched him go and after a couple of minutes I before I began to grow impatient as I started to pace around the parking lot. A couple of time I would get confused or concerned looked from those entering or exiting the club. I could only imagine that I looked insane.

Suddenly the sound of screaming and racing heartbeats was all that I could hear. Then in an instant dozens of people rushed out of the club in a panic. I tried listening into anything that sounded like the Kanima, but I didn't see a human sized lizard anywhere.

Pushing my way through people I tried to reach the entrance, when I caught sight of Scott and Stiles running out of the exit doors. In a split second decision I ran after them, only to find them standing beside a body.

As I stepped closer I realized that it was Jackson. Scott looked up to meet my eyes and and first I was uncertain of whether or not I should approach them.

"Let me help." I told Scott, and I wasn't surprised to see that he looked skeptical in accepting my help. "Don't worry Derek doesn't know."

Scott nodded as he began to pick up Jackson's feet as I lifted his shoulder. At first I felt slightly uncomfortable carrying Jackson's naked body this way, but I quickly dismissed those feelings knowing that it was childish of me to feel that way. We both headed across the parking lot carrying Jackson, with Stiles leading the way as he helped push through everybody. It was a lot harder than I initially thought, as the entire parking lot was still in chaos from all the people who were frantically trying to leave, most not knowing what was going on.

I looked around the parking lot for any sign of my brother, hoping that he wouldn't show. Once we got to the Jeep Stiles opened the car door as I climbed in still carrying Jackson by the shoulders. Sitting down I placed Jackson's head on my lap.

"Stiles give me your jacket." I told him as he looked at me in disbelief.

"My..my jacket? Why do you need my jacket?"

"I don't plan to spend the whole car ride looking at Jackson's d..."

"Okay here." Stiles replied as he quickly removed his jacket and throwing it over Jackson. I used it mostly to cover up everything below the hip but also to help wipe away the blood from wound that looked that they came from claw marks. And I had not doubt that they came from my brother, luckily enough the wounds seemed to be healing quickly.

"I'm going to see if Danny knowing anything." Scott told us before he headed towards the ambulances who were still transporting bodies from inside the building. Stiles got in the car and we sat in silence for a moment as we waited for Scott to come back. The longer he took the more nervous I was becoming, knowing by know that Derek would know that I was gone.

"Why are you here?" Stiles suddenly asked. And I looked up to see him looking at me from the rearview mirror.

"I don't know." I told him truthfully. "I probably shouldn't be."

"I'm glad you are."

"Couldn't get anything out of Danny." Scott said as he got into the passengers seat.

"Okay, can we just get the hell outta here now, before one of my dad's deputies sees me?" Stiles stated as he turned on the ignition, just as the sheriff's car pulled into the parking lot a couple of feet in front of us. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Could this get any worse?" He questioned as Jackson suddenly began to groan, slowly starting to wake up. "That was rhetorical."

"Get rid of him." Scott said quickly as Stiles' father began to approach the Jeep.

"Get rid of him?" Stiles repeated in disbelief, and from where I was sitting I could see his eye slightly twitch in irritation. "We're at a crime scene, and he's the sheriff."

"Do something." I urged him as he sighed getting out of his car and heading towards his father who was awaiting him. There was an unmistakable took of anger and disappointment on his face. And I was almost sure that that look of disappointment was what Stiles was wanting to avoid.

"Hey. What's what's going on?" Jackson muttered as he began to slowly wake up.

"Jackson, be quiet." Scott demand now seeming as irritated as I felt. If only Jackson wouldn't have looked into matters that were none of his concern we wouldn't be in this mess. If only he wasn't so jealous or obsessed with being the best my brother wouldn't have accidentally turned him into a monster.

"What're you doing here?" I heard his father question, and a part of me felt guilty for listening in on what I was sure was going to turn into a private conversation. But, from the way that Scott froze I knew that he was listening in too.

"What do you mean what am I doing here? What? It's a club. It's a club, we were clubbing, you know?" Stiles began to awkwardly ramble, and I immediately rolled my eyes. If we weren't suspicious before we definitely were now. "At the club."

"Not exactly your type of club." Mr. Stilinski noted as he looked around the crowd surrounding the parking lot.

"Uh well, dad...there's a conversation that..."

"You're not gay." I heard him immediately say as he continued to look at his son awaiting a better explanation.

"Wha I could be." Stiles replied defensively.

"Not dressed like that."

At that moment Jackson began to groan loudly again, reminding Scott and I that he was also in the car.

"Jackson, be quiet." I ordered him, but me continued to moan now trying to sit up.

"Shut him up." Scott told me, and not know what else to to I put my hand over Jackson's mouth. After a while he seemed to once again go unconscious, so I released him and began to listen into the conversation between Stiles and his dad.

"This is the second crime scene that you just happened to have shown up on. And at this point, I've been fed so many lies, I'm not sure I know the kid standing in front of me." Mr. Stilinski said, and it sounded like it was very difficult for him to not shout at his son at the moment. And for the first time I wondered how Scott and Stiles could keep such big secrets from their parents. Maybe it was better this way though. Keeping this in blissful ignorance of what was hiding in the dark. "Now, what the hell is going on?"

"What's happening?" Jackson asked as he began to try to get up but I immediately pushed his head back on my lap.

"Jackson stay down." I whispered to him, although he still seemed to be slipping in and out of consciousness. Yet, he seemed determined to sit up and suddenly Scott punched Jackson on the face and his head hit my lap forcefully. Something told me that Scott hit him much harder than was necessary, but I could only assume that this helped Scott release some built up feelings he had towards Jackson.

"The truth, Stiles." His farther urged, and I felt myself tense up hoping that Stiles would be able to make up a good enough excuse as to why we were once again seeming to break the law.

"The truth, all right. Well, the truth is that we were here with Danny." Stiles replied seeming to finally come up with a good enough lie that might ease his father's suspicions. Yeah, 'cause he just broke up with his boyfriend, so, you know, we were just trying to take him out and get his mind off things. That's that's it."

"Well, that's really good of you guys. You're good friends." Mr. Stilinski said before patting his son an the back and giving us a small wave, which we quickly returned. Once the sheriff had walked towards away, Stiles quickly ran over and jumped into the car.

"You know I'm really getting tired of lying to my dad." He muttered as he turned on the Jeep and pulled out of the parking lot and into the street. For a while we remained in the car in silence before we suddenly began to argue about what we were going to do next.

"Uh, what about your house?" Stiles questioned as he continued to mindlessly drive down the dark street illuminated only by a few street lamps.

"Not with my mom there." Scott said quickly as the tension in the car began to grow. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing.

"Well we need to take him somewhere." I said trying to not sound as panicked as I actually was. It felt like we were way in over our heads, we didn't know what we were dealing with. And I couldn't stop thinking that maybe we were going to make things worse because of it. "A place where we can hold him long enough to figure out what to do with him."

"Or long enough to convince him he's dangerous." Scott added, thought I couldn't understand where his optimism seemed to be coming from.

"I still say we just kill him."

"We're not killing him." Scott shouted in disbelief.

"God!" Stiles yelled in frustration as his grip around the steering wheel tightened. He seemed to think for a moment before he finally relaxed. "Okay, okay. I got an idea."

"Does it involve breaking the law?"

"By now, don't you think that's a given?" Stiles replied sarcastically, and normally I could ignore his sarcasm but at the moment it really wasn't the time for it.

"I was just trying to be optimistic." Scott defended seeming exhausted. Then I realized that I felt exhausted too, we were a couple of hours away from sunrise and we had school later today.

"When are we allowed to be optimistic about anything anymore?" I asked having enough of their arguing as it was the last thing that we needed at the moment. "Can we just do whatever it is you're thinking before my brother or the Argents find us?"
