27| Reasons

Lydia fell unconscious to the floor her dress covered in blood, and that's when I felt myself lose control. I immediately shifted as I ran towards Peter who in a split second grabbed me by the throat, slamming me down onto the grass. Falling beside Lydia I felt guilt rush through me seeing her this way. All the air seemed to leave my lungs from the impact of the fall but as my eyes met Peter's the burning hatred I felt overshadowed any pain. "Where's Derek?" Peter questioned as he kneeled down beside me.

"I don't know." I replied through gritted teeth and as I attempted to sit up he grabbed me by the neck pushing me back down not releasing his grip.

"But you can figure it out." He continued Lydia's blood still staining his mouth, the sight making me sick. "Your linked to him. Your link will lead you to him. Just like it did with Lydia, just now."

"I don't know how." I told him as I struggled against his tight hold, and it was the frustrating truth. I didn't know how to find my brother and if I did I certainly wouldn't be at a school dance. I would be out trying to get him back right now. "And even if I did I wouldn't tell you."

Peter scowled for a single moment, but his lips suddenly turned into a satisfied smile that sent a chill down my spine. "And that's why you're not the one I'm after at the moment."

"What are yout talking about?" I asked as I heard a familiar set footsteps coming our way, turning my head to the side I watched in horror at the sight of Stiles standing at the other end of the field. I had told him to stay inside the gym, but I was a fool to think that he would actually listen.

"Alex! Lydia!" Stiled screamed as he began running across the field.

"No." I muttered under my breath. "No Stiles! Stiles get away!" I yelled out, but I knew better than to think that Stiles would actually run the other way. In a matter of seconds he had run across the field falling to his knees beside us.

"Don't kill them. Please." He pleaded as he he attempted to come closer only to have Peter hover over both Lydia and I territorially. Peter slowly tightening his grip around my neck, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of knowing that I was in pain or that I was becoming desperate for air.

"Hmm of course not. Just tell me how to find Derek."

"W...what?" Stiles stuttered and although I initially believed it to be out of fear I came to the realization that he hadn't heard Peter. That his attention was on Lydia and I, meeting his eyes I attempted to assure him that everything was fine. That we would be able to get out of this, even if I didn't believe it myself.

"Tell me how to find Derek Hale."

"I don't know that. How would I know that?"

"Because you're the clever one, aren't you? And because deception has a particularly acrid scent, Stiles. Tell me the truth or I will rip her apart." Peter threatened as is claws dug deeper into my neck, I attempted to hold in the pain but the pressure he had around my neck along with his claws digging deeper into my skin I couldn't help but wince at the pain.

"Look...look, I don't know, okay?" Stiles desperately tried to convince him but I could tell that he really was lying, that he did know something. "I swear to God, I have no idea."

"Tell me!" Peter yelled causing his voice to echo throughout the entire lacrosse field.

"He doesn't know!" I yelled back, feeling desperation building up inside of me knowing that I couldn't to anything to help him or Lydia, who was still bleeding out beside me. That I was the one who was supposed to be able to protect the, but instead I was the weakest I could ever be.

Peter looked down at me with a smirk before looking back up at Stiles. "She doesn't know?"

"Okay, okay, okay, Iook," Stiles began to say with a heavy breath. "I think he knew..."

"Knew what?"

"Derek, I think he I think he knew he was gonna be caught." Stiles explained, his eyes never leaving mine and although I knew he was silently trying to apologize to me I couldn't help but feel betrayed. If there was anyone I thought I bursted it was Stiles, but the realization that he had been hiding the fact that he knew how to find my brother shocked me. I couldn't help but feel angry and hurt.

"By the Argents?" Peter questioned thoughtfully as Stiles nodded. "And?"

"When he was sh...shot, I...I think he took Scott's phone."

"Why?" My uncle continued to ask still not seeing any logic in anything that Stiles was telling him. But I finally understood, just like I suspected. Derek had a plan, he always had a plan or some hidden agenda.

"They all have GPS now. So if he still has it and if it's still on you can find him." Stiles finished, satisfied Peter released his hold on mE allowing me to sit up and take a deep breath of the air that I had been denied for the last couple of minutes. "Alex..." He began to say as he tried to reach out to me, but I moved away from him. It hurt knowing that had lied to me. "I know I should have told you. I was going to tell you but..."

"It's to late for that now." I countered as I turned around towards Lydia moving a strand of her hair out of her face. "I'm sorry."

Stiles moved closer to me, his eyes still pleading but I could  "Alex listen I knew that if told you about Derek that you would try to go after him on your own."

"Isn't that sweet. Now move!" Peter yelled as he gripped my arm pulling me to my feet. Once I was standing I pulled my arm back taking a couple steps away. "You too Stiles."

Stiles looked up at us and then back down at Lydia clearly conflicted on what to do before he shook his head. "No, I'm I'm not just letting you leave her here."

"You don't have a choice, Stiles. You're coming with me."

"Just kill me. Look, I don't care anymore." Stiles pleaded with desperation.

"Stiles don't be stupid." I snapped, unable to wrap my mind around the fact the he had given up. Stiles didn't give up, he was annoyingly stubborn. "Peter let us help Lydia and I'll go with you. I won't fight you. Just let us get her help."

Peter seemed to take my offer into consideration before he turned towards Stiles. "Call your friend. Tell Jackson where she is." He instructed as he also forced Stiles to his feet. "That's all you get."

"Don't feel bad. If she lives, she'll become a werewolf." Peter said breaking the silence as Stiles continued to drive to where Peter was directing him. Stiles' hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, like he was really struggling to hold himself back. He was angry, and feeling that kind of anger coming from Stiles was unsettling. "She'll be incredibly powerful."

"Yeah, and once a month, she'll go out of her freaking mind and try to tear me apart." Stiles snapped as his hands went white around the steering wheel. I looked down at my dress now covered in blood, the wounds on my neck had finally heeled, yet the image to Lydia lying down on the grass, unconscious was enough to consume me with guilt. She should have never been involved, I shouldn't have involved myself with anyone in this town. But I was selfish, and I couldn't push them away.

Now Lydia was hurt and Stiles was in the same car as my psychotic uncle.

"Well, actually, considering that she's a woman twice a month." Peter countered causing me to roll my eyes in irritation, but I knew he wanted me to snap. He wanted me to lose control, just as he had. And I wouldn't give him that satisfaction. I wouldn't become the monster that he had become.

A couple minutes later Stiles parked the Jeep in a parking lot, we were a couple block away from the hospital and I had no I idea why he wanted to stop here of all places.

Peter and Stiles got out of the car and I immediately pushed the front seat forward also getting out just as Peter roughly grabbed Stiles, dragging him towards another car. As I followed after them I came to a stop as the scent of fresh blood came from the trunk of that car. It didn't come from anyone I knew, their scent unfamiliar to me but that didn't stop the horror I felt knowing that he continued to kill.

"Who's car is this?" Stiles asked as Peter pulled out his keys to open the trunk.

"It belonged to my nurse."

"What happened to your..."Before Stiles had a chance to finish Peter opened the trunk where his nurse's lifeless body lay. "Oh my God!"

"I got better." Peter simply replied as he moved her stiff arm out of the way pulling out a green bag that he shoved into Stiles' arms. Shutting the trunk he ripped the bag away from Stiles setting it down at the trunk on his car pulling out a laptop.

"Good luck getting a signal down here." Stiles commented as Peter handed him a small WiFi box. Surprisingly Stiles chuckled nervously as he watched Peter prepare the computer. "Oh, MiFi. And you're a Mac guy. Does that go for all werewolves, or just a personal preference?"

"Turn it on. Get connected." Peter snapped, and I was sure that he hadn't been prepared for Stiles or his annoying remarks.

Stiles sighed as he turned on the computer typing in the WiFi code. "You know, you're really killing the whole werewolf mystique thing here. Look, you still need Scott's username and password, and I'm sorry, but I don't know them."

"You know both of them."

Looking away from the computer he looked at Peter with determination, but it still wasn't enough to cover up that fact that he was obviously lying. But he had to know that lying was pointless, at least when dealing with werewolves. All he was doing know was buying us time. "No, I don't."

"Even if I couldn't hear your heartbeat, I would still be able to tell that you're lying."

"Dude, I swear to God..." Stiles' threat was cut short as Peter once again got a hold of my neck. He held me up to the point where my feet were hardly touching the ground anymore, all to show just how powerful he was. That if he wanted to he could snap my neck in an instant and I wouldn't even have a fighting chance.

I wrapped my arms around his wrist trying to loosen their grip on me as I struggled to take another breath, it was a pathetic effort. But it was all I could do to fight against him in some way.

"I can be very persuasive, Stiles." Peter taunted as he ran one of his claws across my cheek as his other hand tightened around my throat. "Don't make me persuade you."

"No Stiles." I told him, knowing that everything Peter  was saying were just empty threats, he needed me to make his pack stronger and more powerful. He wouldn't give up a chance at more power just to prove a point. "He won't kill me."

Stiles looked at me with wide eyes before looking up at Peter. "What happens after you find Derek?"

"Don't think, Stiles. Type." Peter ordered letting go of me allowing me to straighten up as I felt the wounds he left on my neck slowly start to heal.

"You're gonna kill people, aren't you?" Stiles asked with a shaky breath as he did what he was told.

"Only the responsible ones." Hearing this made the situation not as horrible as it seemed, if Peter got what he wanted maybe he would just leave us alone. As long as he didn't hurt Allison a dark part of me was okay with him getting rid of the Argents. That it was okay for him to kill them slowly to the point where the wished they were dead.

But it was wrong and I knew it, and I couldn't let him do that, because that would make me just as cold hearted as he was. Those vengeful thoughts would turn me into the monster the world thought I was.

"Look, if I do this, you have to promise to leave Scott and Alex out of it." He told my uncle in a now more confident tone, knowing that Peter needed him. That without Stiles he wouldn't get what he wanted.

"Do you know why wolves hunt in packs? It's because their favored prey are too large to be brought down by one wolf alone. I need Derek, Alexis, and Scott. I need the three of them."

"He's not gonna help you."

"Oh, he will. Because it'll save Allison. And you will, because it will save Scott, and my beautiful little niece here."

"What do you mean?"

"When they catch him, and they will, do you really think that they're going to let him live? Especially after having been so close to one of their own? Stiles, all of the power is in your hands now. It's your choice. Are you gonna save him? Your best friend whom you know so well, you even have his username and password." Peter explained causing Stiles to sigh in defeat as his hands slowly moved across the keyboard. "His username is Allison?" He muttered in disbelief as Stiles continued into typing the password. "His password is also Allison?"

"You still want him in your pack?" Stiles questioned, as the page began to load. After a couple of minutes Peter began to get impatient as glared at Stiles. "It's loading. Come on. Wait, what the...that's where they're keeping him?" We all looked down at the screen in silence as we realized where my brother was being kept this entire time. The cruelty of it all made me sick. "At his own house?"

"Not at it. Under it."

"What? What's under it?" I asked not knowing that there was anything underneath our house.

"The tunnel and basement that I used to escape the fire. I know exactly where that is." He told me thoughtfully.

A loud howl time the silence that  followed a howl I immediately recognized as Scott. A howl that was calling for someone, a few seconds later there was a response from my brother. I released a sigh of relief, the past three days apart of me was telling me that he was being tortured and was in pain. I could feel my pack link trying to lead me to him, but it would fade away and I couldn't find him. It was like I couldn't hold onto that connection for more than a second, no matter how desperately I tried. "Derek?"

"And I'm not the only one." My uncle muttered also recognizing the calling howls. "Give me your keys."

"Careful. She grinds in second." Stiles muttered as he reluctantly handed Peter the keys. Once they were in his hand he crushed them bending the metal before handing them back over to a shocked Stiles. "So you're not gonna kill me?"

"Don't you understand yet? I'm not the bad guy here."

"You turn into a giant monster with red eyes and fangs, and you're not the bad guy here?" Stiles asked sarcastically and I was honestly amazed at his ability to use sarcasm at a time like this. And towards someone as deadly as Peter.

"I like you, Stiles. Since you've helped me, I'm going to give you something in return. Do you want the bite?" Peter offered and suddenly I felt my blood run cold. Not so much at Peter's offer but at the thought of Stiles actually accepting it.

"What?" Stiles muttered softly.

"Do...you want...the bite? If it doesn't kill you, and it could, you'll become like us." Peter stated as his gaze moved over to me. "Isn't that what you want."

"Like you." Stiles repeated as he met my eyes, and immediately shook my head in response shocked that he actually seemed to be considering it. That it would be something that he would want.

"Yes, a werewolf. Would you like me to draw you a picture? That first night in the woods, I took Scott because I needed a new pack. It could've easily been you. You'd be every bit as powerful as him. No more standing by his side, watching him become stronger, and quicker, more popular, watching him get the girl." Peter began to describe as he grabbed Stiles' wrist bringing it up to his mouth as he extended his fangs. And his words seemed to be my clouding my own head, was Stiles really jealous of Scott? Did he really feel like he wasn't good enough? "You'd be equals. Or maybe more. Yes or no?"

"Stiles. You don't need the bite to have all those things." I practically pleaded, I didn't want him to have to go through any of this. He was deep enough in all this chaos already Stiles looked over at me and I could see the hesitation in his eyes before he looked back at Peter.

"I don't want to be like you." He declared before he pulled his arm back.

"Do you know what I heard just then? Your heart beating slightly faster over the words I don't want. You may believe that you're telling me the truth, but you are lying to yourself." Peter stated, and I too heard the lie in Stiles' claim. Some part of him did want all the things that came with being one of us, but the reality was that that the consequences outweighed everything else. Suddenly  Ppulling me by the arm. "Goodbye, Stiles."

"Wait! No." Stiles exclaimed as he walked over to us. "You have to let Alex go."

"I told you that I need her. She's coming with me. She is my niece after all." Peter said as he looked at me with a cynical smile and all I could feel towards him was hatred and disappointment.

"No. I can't..."

"It's okay." I tried to assure him. "Just make sure that Lydia is."

"No. No, it's not okay. I can't just let you go with him." He told me his eyes practically pleading me to stay.

"Stiles stop it. I told him that I would go with him, that was the deal." I reminded him as I walked over to the passenger's seat of the car. "Now go."
