12| Being Yoda

After having heard Derek's plan to help Scott find his anchor and control said shift I wasn't sure if he was joking or not. Obviously wasn't a joke, Derek rarely joked. But it certainly felt like one considering that I had to fight the urge to laugh.

"Don't you think that this is a little over the top." I asked Derek with my arms crossed over my chest as we waited in the dark parking lot.

"This is the only way I can think of to make him realize that we have a big threat on our hands." He replied stuffing his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket. He continued to seem oddly optimistic that Scott would come to his sense, though he hadn't spent as much time with him as I had to know that Scott continued to remain in denial.

"Okay but I'm not going to run around a parking lot." I stated with determination until I heard the familiar squeaking of Scott McCall's shoes. "He's here."

Derek nodded as I leaned against the black Camero waiting for his little training session to be over. As I stood there I could hear Scott's rapid heartbeat and breathing and he ran around the parking lot. From the upper floor I heard multiple car alarms go off at the same time and decided to go see what exactly was going on as I took the elevator to the top floor. As far as I knew triggering any car alarms wasn't a part of Derek's plan and although I didn't feel like he was in any danger I didn't want to take any chances.

The sound of a familiar ringtone echoes through the mostly empty parking lot as the elevator doors opened.

"No. No, stop." I heard Scott mutter before Derek jumped on the hood of the car grabbing Scott by the collar of his shirt and slamming him down forcefully on a random car. Naturally I had to roll my eyes at my brother and his theatrics.

"You're dead."Derek stated as he let go of Scott jumping off the car.

"What the hell was that?" Scott exclaimed surprisingly not as angry as I thought he would initially be.

"Said I was gonna teach you. I didn't say when."

"You scared the crap out of me!" Scott yelled as he looked between the two of us.

"Not yet." My brother replied as he began to walk to an empty spot in the parking lot as Scott and I followed. Yawning I leaned back against the cold wall wondering how much longer this little lesson was going to last. The only reason I was here was because Derek believed that seeing me would help Scott trust him more.

"Okay, but I was fast, right?"

"Seems like fast enough." I told him.

"But the car alarm thing, that was smart, right?" Scott continued to ask hopefully.

"Till your phone rang." I countered. "Anyways your heart beat could probably be heard from a mile away."

"Yeah, but that was..I mean..would you just stop?" Scott practically yelled at us in frustration. "PIease? What happened the other night, Stiles' dad getting hurt, that was my fault. I should have been there to do something. I need you to teach me how to control this."

As far as I knew Stiles' was still ignoring Scott after his dad got hurt. Surely. Scott was beginning to really feel just how serious this entire situation was.

"Look, we are what we are because of birth." Derek explained. "You were bitten. Teaching someone who was bitten takes time. I don't even know if I can teach you."

Scott sighed clearly overwhelmed and absolutely not prepared for any of this. "What do I have to do?"

"You have to get rid of distractions. You see this?" Derek ask as he ripped Scott phone away showing him the screen the notified that he had a missed call from Allison. "This is why I caught you. You want me to teach you? Get rid of her."

"What, just because of her family?" Scott asked before Derek raised his hand throwing Scott phone against the wall. "Wait, wait, wait!"

"Getting angry? Want to know how to do this?" Derek asked noticing how angry Scott was that he just shattered his phone. "Its by getting angry, by tapping into a primal animal rage, and you can't do that with her around."

"I can get angry." He replied with determination.

"Not angry enough!" My brother yelled and although he was being harsh, maybe it would be the only approach that would finally get Scott to really understand just how much danger we all found ourselves in. "This is the only way that I can teach you. Now, can you stay away from her? At Ieast until after the full moon?"

"If that's what it takes."

"Do you want to Iive? Do you want to protect your friends? Yes or no?"

"Yes. If you can teach me, I can stay away from her." Scott agreed as he walked off and although he seemed to finally have accepted his truth it wouldn't be easy. There was still so much for him to learn and so much that we didn't know that this small step towards progress wasn't enough.

I turned towards Derek who was wearing his usual emotionless expression." You know he's not going to stay away from her right?"

"Well he's going to have to."

Although I would never admit it to Derek my lack of sleep was beginning to catch up to me. Everyday of school getting harder to get through than the rest as sleep became more scarce every night. But my grades were the least of my worries with the alpha still running loose through Beacon hills.

"Sit here." Stiles said as I walked into the classroom, he patted the desk that Scott usually sits in. "Sit here."

"Why?" I asked as I took my usual seat beside him.

"Because I don't want Scott to sit next to me." He quickly replied as he patted the seat behind him again.

"You do realize that if I sit in Scott's seat he'll just sit in mine which is still next to you?" I questioned as his eyes widened in realization clearly not having thought his little plan all the way through.

Stiles sighed as he put his hands over his face. "God I hate that you're right." Scott walked into the room and Stiles immediately looked down before turning his head towards me. "Ignore Scott."

"Gladly." I muttered hoping that I would get one of the two off my side for once. I had yet to decide which of the two irritated me the most, but it was too early to even question Stiles.

"Hey." Scott greeted as he sat behind Stiles only to be ignored by his best friend. "Oh, come on! Still not talking to me? Either of you?" He exclaimed with a sigh once neither of us acknowledged his presence. "Can you at Ieast tell me if your dad's okay? I mean, it's just a bruise, right? Some soft tissue damage? Nothing that big? You know I feel really bad about it, right? Okay." Scott leaned into his desk as Stiles rolled his eyes. "What if I told you that I'm trying to figure this whole thing out, and that I went to Derek for help?"

"If I was talking to you, I'd say that you're an idiot for trusting him." Stiles stated in annoyance causing me to glare at him, mostly in disbelief that he continued to not trust my brother. "But obviously I'm not talking to you." The bell rang as everyone settled into their seats, but at that moment Stiles turned around in his desk to face Scott giving into his curiosity. "What did he say?"

"If you two are going to talk about it wait till class is over." I scolded knowing that they would go into a full conversation in the middle of class where people would over hear or we would end up in detention.

"Fine." Stiles muttered in annoyance.

"Fine." I replied as I opened my text book to pay attention to the lecture. Throughout the entire class Stiles was continuously looking at the clock and tapping his pencil anxiously, which was starting to get on my nerves. When the bell finally rang signaling that the class was over and I let out a sigh of relief, quickly getting up from my seat but it was no surprise that Scott and Stiles were walking right behind me.

"So what did Derek say?" Stiles asked.

"He told me that the only way to gain control is to embrace it and that my anger would help me with the shift." Scott repeated what my brother had explained to him earlier in the parting lot.

I faced them annoyed with the way that they were talking about Derek, he could be difficult but he was still my brother. "We call it an anchor." I told them only to be met with blank expressions that were waiting for me to continue. "Something that helps keeps us human, for a lot of us its anger."

"So he wants Scott to tap into his animal side and get angry?" Stiles asked in disbelief and I just nodded in response. "AII right, well, correct me if I'm wrong, but every time you do that, you try to kill someone...and that someone's usually me."

"Then anger isn't Scott's anchor, which means we have to find it." I explained in actual disbelief that I was practically going against what Derek wanted to help them.

"That's what he means when he says he doesn't know if he can teach me. I have to be able to control it." Scott concluded as we continued to walk down the hall.

"Well, how's he gonna teach you to do that?" Stiles asked.

"I don't know. I don't think he does either."

"That because its different for everyone." I defended. "You were bitten the way that you control your shift is completely different from when we learned how to control ours."

"Because you were born not bitten." Stiles said having a greater understanding of what we were. "When are you seeing him again?"

"Just told me not to talk about it." Scott replied slowly. "Just act normal and get through the day."

"When?" Stiles insisted.

"He's picking me up at the animal clinic after work."

"After work. AII right, well, that gives me to the end of the school day then." He replied with determination.

"To do what?"

"To teach you myself."

"Are you out of your mind?" I exclaimed in disbelief at his confidence that he believed himself to know more about any of this than my brother and I. "You actually think you can help teach Scott control?"

"I know I can." Stiles replied as he smiled confidently. "Just you watch."

I was sitting with Scott and Stiles in the library as Scott attempted to hide behind a book as he stared at Allison who was sitting at a nearby table with Lydia. "What if she thinks I'm ignoring her?"

After what happed with Derek a couple of nights ago and the Argent's constant attacks, I found myself distancing myself from Allison. And with that came distancing myself from Lydia, who continued to attempt to be my friend for some reason.

"You are." Stiles replied bluntly as he took a bite from his apple.

"What if she thinks I hate her?" Scott asked as he looked up from his book again. Annoyed I stood up and began to walk towards Allison, but Scott quickly got a hold of my wrist. "What are you doing?"

"You want answers? I'm going to get them." I told him as I pulled my hand back and walked over to Allison and Lydia. As much as I wanted to believe that Allison wasn't as terrible as the rest of her family,  I simply couldn't ignore the fact that she was one of them. Luckily it seemed that she was completely obliviously to the supernatural world, so that allowed us to use her to our advantage. "Hey guys."

"Hey." They greeted as I took a seat beside Lydia.

"Nice to see you without Scott and Stiles by your side." Lydia stated as she picked at her salad with a fork. "Like gross."

I sighed realizing that they are always by my side. "Yeah, they're that gum under my shoe that I just can't get rid of."

"I was wondering...if you've talked to Scott?" Allison asked slowly, I wasn't surprised that she felt compelled to ask. In fact it was amusing just how predicated teenage girls could be, especially ones that had a crush on terribly annoying boys.  "I just feel totally disconnected from him. I haven't seen him all day."

"That's because Scott just has a lot on his plate right now." I explained to her knowing that Scott was listening in right now. Even beyond that I did pity him, he was losing the only good thing that came to him after getting bitten. Although he would never be able to be with Allison, maybe she didn't have to hate him. "He's failing classes so he's just trying to catch up."

Allison nodded slowly as she took the new information in, but she still seemed either disappointed or not fully satisfied with my response.. "That makes sense."

"So what are you working on?" I asked her wanting to change the subject.

"A history report about my family history." Allison replied with excitement as she opened up the large book in front of her. "The Beast of Gevadan. Listen." She said as she began to read. "A quadruped wolf-Iike monster, prowling the Auvergne and South Dordogne areas of France during the year 1764 to 1767. La Bete killed over 100 people, becoming so infamous that the King Louis XV sent one of his best hunters to try and kill it."

She looked up towards us for a reaction, and the only way I could describe mine was shock. "Boring." Lydia muttered with disinterest.

I had read the book before, Derek had assigned me to read it a long time ago. He always found it important to know the histories of all the hunter families. Hearing Allison read about her family history now was concerning as it would only bring more questions.

"Even the church eventually declared the monster a messenger of Satan."

"Hmm. Still boring." Lydia stated as she continued to pick at her salad.

Allison frowned but continued reading hoping that she could change Lydia's mind. "Cryptozoologists believe it may have been a subspecies of hoofed predator, possibly a mesonychid."

"SIipping-into-a-coma bored."

"While others believe it was a powerful sorcerer who could shape-shift into a man-eating monster."

"Does any of this have anything to do with your family?" I questioned wanting to know just how much she knew. If she did know more that put Scott and I in even more danger.

"This. It is believed that La Bete was finally trapped and killed by a renown hunter who claimed his wife and four children were the first to fall prey to the creature. His name was Argent."

"Your ancestors killed a big wolf. So what?" Lydia asked again with complete boredom.

"Not just a big wolf. Take a Iook at this picture." Allison said as she flipped the page to a painting. She moved the book in front of us so we could get a better look, and I tried to keep a straight face as I recognized what looked like an alpha. "What does it Iook Iike to you?"

I turned towards Lydia who was only staring at the painting with wide eyes. "Lydia? Lydia."

She blinked a couple of times before looking up at Allison. "It Iooks Iike a big wolf. See you in History."

We watched as Lydia left and decided to stand up as well.  "Hate to leave you alone, but I should get going too." I told her and she nodded with a smile before looking back down at her book. I walked back over to Scott and Stiles and took a seat. "There you got you're answers."

"Thanks, that was really nice of you to...you know make up that excuse for me." Scott replied gratefully and I rolled my eyes in response not needing any of his gratitude.

"Don't get used to it." I told him. "Anyways it wasn't a lie you are failing classes."

"And there she is." Stiles commented as he looked over at Scott in irritation. "I think the book's making it more obvious. Besides, she's reading, anyway."

"So did you come up with a plan yet?" Scott asked still not putting down the book.

"I think so."

"Does that mean you don't hate me now?" Scott asked with a hopeful smile.

"No." Stiles replied still angry at Scott. I understood where he was coming from reading his father's accident, but it still felt unnatural to have Stiles so upset with Scott. "But your crap has infiltrated my Iife, so now I have to do something about it. PIus I'm definitely a better Yoda than Derek."

"Okay, yeah, you teach me." Scott said as he looked over at Allison again.

"Yeah, I'II be your Yoda."

"Yeah, you be my Yoda." Scott repeated not as enthusiastic about the reference as Stiles was.

"Your Yoda I will be." Stiles continued amused with himself, but once he looked at Scott and I's lack of reaction he sighed. "I said it backwards."

"Yeah, I know."

"AII right, you know what? I definitely still hate you. Uh-huh." Stiles stated as he stood up in irritation. He began to walk away but came back to tap my shoulder. "Let's go."

"You don't tell me what to do." I replied, but only resulted in him continuing to tap my shoulder.

"Let's go." He said as he continued his tapping. "Let's go."

"Fine!" I exclaimed as I stood up, not wanting to deal with this anymore. Picking up my book I followed him out of the library, fighting the urge to just ditch the rest of the day to avoid any more of the teenage drama that came with going to high school or having to deal with Scott and Stiles' who only tended to get in the way. "So what's your plan?"

He smiled at me mischievously as we turned to corner towards the boys locker room.
