10| Alpha's Attack
Derek, Scott and I were standing on top of the roof to the video store. The ambulance and the police had already surrounding the place as they pushed the dead body on the stretcher. "Starting to get it?" Derek asked as we stepped away from the ledge.
"I get that he's killing people, but I don't get why. I mean, this isn't standard practice, right?" Scott began to ramble nervously. "We don't go out in the middle of the night murdering everyone, do we?"
"No. We're predators." My brother corrected. "We don't have to be killers."
"Then why is he a killer?"
"That's what we're gonna find out." I replied knowing that he had too many questions that we didn't have answers for.
"You know, I have a Iife, too." Scott countered.
"No, you don't." My brother assured causing Scott to instantly tense up. I would have thought that by now he would have accepted what he had become, but that clearly wasn't the case.
"Yes, I do! I don't care what you say about him making me his pet or part of his pack. I have homework to do. I have to go to a parent/teacher conference tomorrow because I'm failing chemistry." Scott exclaimed in realization before turning towards me. "Have you started you're chemistry homework?"
"Yeah, I finished it before we came over here." I told him like it was no big deal.
"But how?"
"Seems to me that you need to work on you're time management Scott." I replied crossing my arms over my chest.
"You wanna do homework? Or do you wanna not die?" Derek asked and I rolled my eyes at how dramatic my brother was being, if anything he was scaring Scott more. "You have Iess than a week until the full moon. You don't kill with him, he kills you."
"Okay, seriously, who made up these rules?"
"Think about it like a rite of passage into his pack." I told him trying to simplify things.
"You know what else is a rite of passage? Graduating from high school!" Scott exclaimed clearly overwhelmed. "And you don't have to kill anyone to do it! Why can't you just find him yourself? Why can't you just sniff him out when he's a human?"
"Because his human scent is entirely different. I've tried but I loose it whenever he shifts back into his human form." I said in annoyance remembering the countless nights I've been out with Derek tracking the scent. "It has to be you. You have a connection with him, a Iink that you can't understand."
"If I can teach you to control your abilities, you can find him." Derek added.
"So if I help you, you two can stop him?"
"Not alone." I said with a sigh. "We're stronger in numbers. Being in a pack it makes us stronger. The more in a pack the stronger we become."
"How am I supposed to help if I have no idea what I'm doing?" Scott continued to ask still feeling overwhelmed this this change in his life.
"Because I'm gonna teach you." My brother assured and we left the crime scene and walked into the woods. "Do you remember what happened that first night you were shot in the arm? Right after you were hit?"
"Yeah, I changed back." Spotted replied in realization.
"And when you were hit by his car, same thing, right?" Derek asked and Scott nodded in realization. "What's the common denominator?"
Suddenly Derek got a hold of Scott's wrist. "No! What is What the hell are you doing!" Scott's exclaimed before my brother broke his wrist. He let out a cry of pain one that made me wince almost like if I too felt his pain in some way.
"It'II heal." I assured him as Derek let go. My brother was beginning to cross some boundaries that I didn't entirely agree with. I used to watch my mother as she trained Derek and my other siblings when they first began to turn and it was never like this. She never got to help me, but even when Derek helped me find control he was never this intense.
"It's still hurt!" Scott exclaimed clearly still in pain as he held onto his wrist.
"And that's what keeps you human. Pain." Derek continued as he observed Scott, who was breathing deeply but was ultimately able to keep himself in control as he healed. "Maybe you will survive."
I walked into chemistry taking my usual seat in the back, Stiles who was already seated as couple of rows in front of me grabbed his belongings and took the empty seat next to mine. Groaning in annoyance I ignored him and took my textbook out and waited for class to begin.
"Well good morning to you too." Stiles commented as he also took out his textbook and a yellow highlighter.
"Just a friendly reminder, parent, teacher conferences are tonight. Students below a "C" average are required to attend. I won't name you, because the shame and self-disgust should be more than enough punishment." Harris began to recite looking specifically at Scott's empty desk. "Has anyone seen Scott McCall?" He yelled before a tired looking Jackson walked into the room and took his usual seat. "Hey, Jackson. If you need to Ieave early for any reason, you Iet me know. Everyone, start reading chapter nine." Harris yelled at the class before stopping in front of Stiles who was highlighting every line in the text book. "Mr. Stilinski. Try putting the highlighter down between paragraphs. It's chemistry, not a coloring book."
Stiles glared at the back of Harriss' head before spitting out the highlighter cap he had in his mouth only for it to land in his hand. "Hey, Danny. Can I ask you a question?" Stiles whispered to Danny who was seated right in front of him.
"No." Danny replied in annoyance.
"Well, I'm going to anyway." Stiles replied as he leaned in closer to Danny. "Um, did Lydia show up in your homeroom today?"
"No." Danny said with a sigh not bothering to look back Stiles.
"Can I ask you another question?
"Answer's still no."
"Does anyone know what happened to her and Jackson Iast night?" Stiles continued to ask as he leaned further in.
"He wouldn't tell me." Danny muttered in disappointment.
"But he's your best friend. One more question."
"What?." Danny snapped obviously done with all of Stiles' questioning.
"Do you find me attractive?" Stiles asked causing my eyes to widen. I looked over to see Stiles leaning exceptionally close to Danny waiting for an answer until he stumbled out of his chair. He fell on his knees but quickly picked himself up from the ground sitting back on his chair.
Rolling my eyes I turned back to my work before a small piece of paper landed in my book. I turned back around to find Stiles gesturing for me to read it. Sighing I opened up the piece of paper and the words Was it the Alpha? was written across in messy writing.
I faced him as he looked at me expectantly doing a writing gesture with his hands and pointing at the piece of paper in front of me. Crumpling up the piece of paper I tossed it at him before returning my attention to the board. Another piece of paper fell on my book but this time I just slipped it inside my book not bothering to read it. Stiles groaned, but didn't attempt to bother my again until class ended as he followed out of class.
"It was the alpha right?" Stiles asked as he tried to keep up with me as we made our way through the crowd of students.
"Yes." I simply answered as I stopped at my locker.
"Do you know where Scott is?" He asked me as he leaned against the locker next to mine.
"No."
"You know I would really appreciate it if you would stop giving me one worded answers." Stiles told me causing me to finally look at him.
"What else do you want me to say?" I snapped not sure what exactly it was that he expected. I knew nothing and I wasn't Scott's babysitter to know where he was at all times. "Yes, it was the alpha that attacked Jackson. And no, I don't know where Scott is. He's your best friend not mine."
"He won't answer any of my text." Stiles replied looking down at his phone with a mix of irritation and worry. "And I don't know didn't you say you were some sort of link between werewolves?"
"I'm a pack link and the only link I have is with my brother."
"So how does that work? Do you get to choose or does it just happen?" He continued to ask me clearly curious.
"I don't know much about what I can do, all I know is that I can't control it." I said slamming my locker shut and continuing my way down the hall. "But Derek says its with who I form emotional connections with. Or people my alpha let's into his pack."
"Wow...so is it only between werewolves or..."
"I already told you I don't know much. I never met anyone like me." I replied was I felt my irritation building, it was frustrating not understanding what exactly I was or how I could better use my abilities. "Now will you stop asking me so many questions?"
"Okay well...I was going to go to Lydia's after school to ask her about what she saw. Want to come?"
"That's still a question. And to answer it no." Stiles sighed in annoyance at my response as he got a hold of my arm stopping me.
"And why not?" He asked and before I commented on him asking me another question he raised his hand to stop me. "I know, but don't say it."
"Why would you want me to come anyways?" I asked him as we walked down the stairs. "Thought you'd want some alone time with the girl who's name alone causes you to drool."
"I do not drool." Stiles countered as he whipped his mouth.
"That look on your face tells me that your thinking about her." I replied in annoyance not wanting to have this conversation.
"How are you so sure it was her I was thinking about huh?"
"Unless thats the look you get when your thinking about Scott then...it's Lydia." I continued as I opened the doors leading us to the school parking lot.
"You know after what happened last week I thought you'd be a little nicer to me." Stiles claimed as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"This is me being nicer to you." I told him and he thought about it for a while before he nodded his head in agreement. "If you find anything important at Lydia's then we can talk."
I knocked on the door of the Stilinski household after having gotten five missed calls from Stiles saying the he found something and that it was an emergency. Considering Stiles' tendency to exaggerate and overreact I wasn't sure if it was as urgent as he made it out to seem, but my curiosity got the best of me. Or maybe it was simply desperation at the fact that we had made absolutely no process of hiding the alpha.
The door opened as the sheriff looked at me with wide eyes. "Thank god, I thought I'd never see you again." I was completely confused at what he meant and he realized this as he continued. "It's just that my son has never had a girl over. In fact he didn't talk to any girls before you. So its such a relief to seem him with someone who isn't Scott."
"Dad!" Stiles exclaimed in horror as he rushed down the stairs, practically falling in the process. "Alex, don't listen to anything he says." He claimed as he grabbed my arm and began pulling me upstairs. "If you need anything we'll be in my room."
"So what happened?" I asked curiously once we were inside of his room. Taking a seat at the edge of his bed I waited impatiently for him to explain.
"So I went to Lydia's..."
"Yes we established that." I said earning an annoyed look from Stiles.
"And I couldn't really get anything out of her she's on some really heavy meds." He continued as he pulled a cellphone out of his pocket. "But I got this."
My eyes widened at the sight of the familiar phone as I looked at Stiles in shock. "You stole her phone?"
Stiles's eyes also widened in mock offense as he took a seat next to me. "More like borrowed."
"No, you stole it."
"You know sometimes I just think there's no point arguing with you." Stiles muttered under his breath as he scrolled through the phone. "Anyways...here take a look at this."
He handed me the phone as he played the video. At first I was disinterested until I recognized the video store from the other side of town. It was only a few seconds long but it showed the alpha breaking through the video store window.
"Wow." I said slowly as I rewatched the video again. We hadn't seen the alpha in its true form until now, and I was horrified to see the form that one of use could take once we fully gave into our animalistic instincts. "My brother has to see this."
"Wait. I want Scott see it first." He told me as he got up and began to pace the room. "The thing is that he hasn't been answering any of my calls."
I sighed before nodding. "Sure call Scott."
Stiles pulled his phone out of his pocket before calling Scott. He called about five times before deciding to leave a voice mail. "Hey, it's me again. Look, I found something, and I don't know what to do, okay? So if you could turn your phone on right now, that'd be great." Stiles began to ramble as he paced around his room. "Or else I'II kill you. Do you understand me? I'm gonna kill you. And I'm too upset to come up with a witty description about how exactly I'm gonna kill you, but I'm just gonna do it, okay? I'm gonna Ugh! Scott..."
I ripped the phone out of his hand and threw it on his bed. "I think it's time to accept the fact that he isn't going to answer."
"Fine give me Lydia's phone." He asked extending his hand out.
"No Derek has to see this."
Stiles chuckled before taking a couple steps closer. "No he doesn't, if Scott doesn't see this Derek won't either. Don't make me take it from you."
"You really think you can?"
"Pff...of course." He replied slowly.
"I have claws." I reminded him as I extended them from one hand. Stiles' eyes widened but he acted as if he wasn't affected at all.
"Yeah well your all talk." He countered crossing his arms over his chest. "I know you wouldn't hurt me."
"PIease tell me I'm gonna hear good news at this..." The sheriff said as he suddenly entered the room. We both froze and I instinctively held the phone behind me back. "parent, teacher thing tonight."
"Depends on how you define good news." Stiles muttered slowly as he held onto the edge of his chair.
"I define it as you getting straight A's with no behavioral issues." Stiles's dad continued as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"You might wanna rethink that definition."
"Enough said." The sheriff muttered. "You kids stay out of trouble." He warned before closing the door behind him. Suddenly Stiles snatched the phone away from me and before I had a chance to get it back he deleted the video.
"You're mad an that's understandable." Stiles said noticing the way I was staring at him.
"I'm going to kill you." I said through gritted teeth feeling my pulse rise in anger. It was rare that I lost control but Stiles had just deleted the one thing that could have helped us find the alpha that had murdered my sister.
I took a step closer to him ready to threaten him again before a familiar feeling watched over me. That connections that I had to my brother telling me something was wrong. That Derek needed my help.
"What was that?" Stiles asked in a panic as he took a step closer. "Your eyes went purple for a second."
"Derek he's in trouble."
