07| A Truth Revealed

I was sitting in the dusty room of what used to be my old room as Derek paced back and forth. I was trying to finish my homework, but I could feel how worried my brother was and it was starting to become unnerving. "Will you stop that?" I said shutting my textbook closed, causing Derek to stop and look down at me with a mix of irritation and confusion.

"What?"

"Stop being so worried it's freaking me out!" I practically yelled at him, I was already worried and the fact that I could also feel the worry that he felt was like torture.

"We have to..."

"Shhhh....." I whispered when I heard leaves crunching, and Derek tensed up as he looked at me expectantly.

"What do you hear? Is it the Alpha?" He asked eagerly and I shook my head once I made out the sound of a police radio.

"The police are coming." I simply stated before returning my attention back to my homework. Derek walked over to the window and looked out before he turned back towards me.

"You sure?" He asked me doubtfully. Now it was my turn to return his irritated look, I didn't appreciate him doubting me or my abilities. Although I might not completely understand everything that came with being a pack link I did have a clear understanding of my heightened senses.

"It looks pretty deserted, dispatch." I heard the officer say into the radio. "Did you want me to take a look inside?"

"Unit 16, it's county property. Order's to make sure it's vacant."

"I don't... I don't think anyone's home." The officer replied to the station, though the hesitation in his voice gave away the obvious fear he felt towards this house. Not that I could blame him it had been abandoned for many years and to everyone in town it was rumored to be haunted.

"For the love of God, 16, go inside and see if anyone's in there."

"Copy that." He replied and Derek made his way towards the window and began to stare down the dog causing it to bark repeatedly. As I heard the officers' steps come closer the barking got louder and more out of control.

"Don't do that." The officer yelled at the dog in fear. "Okay, I'm coming. I'm coming."

Derek looked back at me triumphantly and I rolled my eyes unimpressed. "Good job you scared away a dog."

"Aren't you just a pile of sunshine today?" Derek replied in an annoyed tone.

"I was raised by you, what did you expect?" I countered he was going to reply when we both stopped and looked up when we heard the crunching of leaves. Derek looked at me expectantly and I concentrated my senses before I caught a familiar scent. "It's Scott."

"I know you can hear me!" Scott yelled as he approached the front of the house. Derek and I both shared a look and made our downstairs towards the porch. When Derek stepped outside he was immediately ambushed by the one and only Scott McCall. "I need your help."

Derek only gave him an unimpressed and blank look, so Scott took that as his sign to continue. "Okay. I know I was part of you getting arrested and that we basically announced you being here to the hunters. I also don't know what happened to your sister. But I think I did something last night. I had a dream about someone. But someone else got hurt. And it turns out that part of the dream might have actually happened."

"You think you attacked the driver?" Derek questioned although we already discussed this on the ride here, I guess he just wanted to hear it voiced by Scott himself.

"Did you see what I did last night?" Scott asked, hopeful for answers.

"No."

"Can you at least tell me the truth? Am I gonna hurt someone?" Scott continued to ask and I could feel the irritation building up inside of me.

"Yes."

"Could I kill someone?" He asked once again.

"Yes." I looked over at Derek and gave him a look that basically told him to stop with his one worded answers.

"Am I gonna kill someone?"

"Probably. Look, I can show you how to remember. I can show you how to control the shift, even on a full moon." Derek told him, and Scott gave us a hopeful look."But it's not gonna come for free."

"What do you want?" Scott asked the question I was asking myself.

"You'll find out. But for now, I'm gonna give you what you want." My brother continued cryptically. "Go back to the bus. Go inside. See it, feel it. Let your senses, your sight, smell, touch. Let them remember for you."

"That's it? Just go back?" Scott exclaimed, seeming stunned that the answer he was desperate for could be found so easily.

"Do you want to know what happened? " My brother replied clearly, just as irritated as I was, but he was able to mask it better.

"I just want to know if I hurt him."

"No, you don't." I simply replied, having been around him long enough I knew exactly who was always on his mind. "You want to know if you'll hurt Allison."

Derek got a hold of my arm and pulled me aside. "You're going to go with them."

"What? Why!" I quickly exclaimed. Apparently it wasn't enough that I was stuck with these two at school, but I also had to spend my free time with them too.

"Because if you go then you might be able to catch the Alpha's scent." He stated as if it were obvious and I just gave him a blank stare. I wanted to find the Alpha just as much as he did, whoever they were, they killed Laura. But for Derek there seemed to be something else that he was hiding.

"We've been over this Derek." I reminded him as I crossed my arms over my chest.

"You might get lucky." He continued and I rolled my eyes in response. "I know we still have a lot to learn about you, but I know you can do this."

"Well, thanks for the vote of confidence." I replied sarcastically, completely irritated with the fact that he was putting the weight of this responsibility on my shoulders. Not only did he want me to continue looking after Scott but he wanted me to continue the search for the Alpha.

And I couldn't shake the feeling that we weren't prepared to have them when we did.

We all got out of Stiles's jeep and walked towards the fence. As Stiles was preparing himself to climb the fence I pulled him by the hood of his hoodie to prevent him from going any further. The idea of Stiles climbing over the fence was ridiculous enough.

"You're not coming, just us." I told him, and he only rolled his eyes as he looked at Scott for support. "You'll get in the way."

"It's not...that look..."

"No it is." I said, interrupting Scott. "You wouldn't be any help, so you're staying out here."

"Someone needs to keep watch." Scott told him reassuringly as he made it seem like we actually needed someone to keep watch.

"How come I'm always the guy keeping watch?" Stiles complained.

"Because there's only two of us." Scott reminded him as I watched them impatiently.

"Okay, why's it starting to feel like you're Batman and I'm Robin? I don't want to be Robin all the time." Stiles continued and not wanting to stand around while they sorted out their dilemma I climbed the fence and jumped off when I reached the top. Stiles looked at me in shock and turned back towards Scott. "See and she's Batgirl, that's not fair."

"I am not going to be a sidekick." I told them, although I didn't know why I was actually playing along with their game.

"Nobody's Batman and Robin, or Batgirl any of the time." Scott declared as he slowly began to climb the fence.

"Not even some of the time?" Stiles complained and I groaned in frustration that it seemed that we wouldn't get anything done.

"Just stay here." Scott ordered as he easily climbed over the fence.

"Oh, my God! Fine." Stiles yelled and I glared at him to shut up, and he slowly walked over to his Jeep in disappointment. Scott and I walked across the parking lot towards the bus that was standing in the middle of the lot. I began walking faster wanting to get this over with as soon as possible and I pulled the bus doors open and stepped inside. Scott followed soon after and gave me an unsure look.

"Just take everything in. Let your senses take over." I said, remembering the words my mom told me once, when I first began to shift. She was only able to teach a few things before the fire. I immediately shook those thoughts out of head and continued with the task at hand. "You won't learn to control your abilities if you don't accept them first. Trust your instincts."

Scott gave me an almost thankful look, and for some reason I didn't feel like he was just another problem to the list. I didn't say anything else as I connected with my abilities and attempted to find anything out of place. All I could feel was a lot of hate, until I reached the back of the bus. I touched one of the claw marks left on the leather of the seats and felt a weird energy that I couldn't really explain. I looked at the marks in concentration before it was broken by the light sound of barking in the distance.

I looked over at Scott who had a weird look on his face until he heard it too. "You need to get yourself a new Robin." I commented as we both stood there at the center of the bus, annoyed that Stiles couldn't even do his simple job correctly.

"Tell me about it." He replied when we heard the honking of Stiles' Jeep.

"Let's go." I said as I ran out of the bus and towards Stiles who continued to honk as he stuck his head out the window.

"Come on, come on, come on." He began to yell as the security guards were now in sight. I jumped on top of one of the rusty cars and flipped over the fence. I was about to jump inside the Jeep when the winds blew by leaving a familiar scent behind. By instinct I turned my head towards it and began to run in the general direction. "No! No! No!" I heard Stiles yell from behind me. "Not again!" I was already running through the woods until I reached a road that was a few blocks from the hospital, and that's when I realized I couldn't go any further because the scent was long gone.

It didn't make any sense.

And it only left me with more answers. Did the Alpha work at the hospital?

Or was there something else going on that we couldn't begin to understand?

"So you didn't pick up the Alpha's scent?" Derek asked as we were on our way back home.

"The Alpha was definitely there." I began to tell him as we drove down the dark road, a small light from the approaching gas station was all that was visible. "I was able to follow his scent until I lost it."

"What do you mean you lost it?" Derek asked in an irritated tone, he sighed when he probably realized that the situation was out of my control. "Where did you follow it to?"

"I was able to follow it a few miles away from the hospital, it must have been where he shifted back to his human form." I replied, frustrated with myself for not having any concrete answers. "But he's hidden that scent all too well."

"That doesn't clear anything up." My brother reminded me as he gripped the steering wheel. Then he pulled into the gas station and got out of the car. I followed after him as he paid and began to fill the tank of his precious car. As he was putting the pump back in its place a black van began to pull up in the gas station.

I caught the scent of an all too familiar scent and got a hold of Derek's arm. "Let's go. Now." I told him but he stayed put when he realized that it was Chris Argent who was getting out of the van. He walked over to us with a malicious smile pasted on his face as he touched the hood to Derek's car.

"Nice ride. BIack cars, though. Very hard to keep clean. I would definitely suggest a little more maintenance. If you have something this nice, you want to take care of it, right?" He said as he took semesters closer to us. I didn't know what he wanted, but coming form and Argent it couldn't be good. "Personally, I'm very protective of the things I love. But that's something I learned from my family. And you don't have much of that these days. Do you? The only family you have left is you sister here, and it would really be a shame if something were to endanger her." Mr. Argent continued as he began to clean the windshield of the car. That's when I realized that he was testing Derek the same way he was me back at that lacrosse game. Derek's fist were clenched tightly as he took a protective step in front of me. I could feel all of my brother's anger and the only thing that kept me from ripping the Argent's head off was that unlike them I had humanity. "There we go. You can actually look through your windshield now. See how that makes everything so much clearer?"

"I'd really like to see things from your point of view." I began to say, ignoring Derek's warning stare. "But sadly I can't get my head that far up my..."

"Alexis." Derek said in a stern tone, and I sighed and crossed my arm over my chest.

"It's good to let her know where her place is." He said, eyeing me with a smirk. He began to walk towards his truck and by the look of determination on my brother's face I knew he wasn't going to let things end this way.

"You forgot to check the oil." Derek said in a challenging tone. I knew he wanted to prove himself, and show he wasn't afraid. He already proved that he wasn't a threat by not acting violently towards any of his words.

"Check the man's oil." Mr. Agent ordered one of his henchmen who pulled a baseball bat from the back of the truck. I watched as the man walked up to our car and hit the windshield with the bat shattering all the glass.

"Looks good to me." The man said as he walked back to the van.

"Drive safely." Chris Argent told us as he began to get in his car.

"No stay, I'd really love to continue to listen to another of your crappy speeches." I saw as another malicious smile plastered itself on his lips before he got in his truck and drove away into the darkness. "That bastard." I said under my breath and that's when I realized that I had my fist clenched so tightly that my palms were bleeding from my claws digging into my flesh.

"They just want to get in our heads." Derek reminded me as he got a hold of my hand and sighed, they were already visibly healing so I didn't make anything of it. "Don't let them get to you."

I looked down at my fully healed hand and smirked at how I was letting them get under my skin. "I might have overreacted a bit." I admitted softly.

"A bit?" Derek repeated in a questioning way and I looked up and flashed him an innocent smile.

After we cleaned up the car from all the broken glass, it was no surprise that we were back in our old childhood home. "I don't understand your attachment to this place." I told Derek as I looked down at my hands. "All it does is bring back bad memories."

"That's all we have." He simply replied, as he stood there looking at me expectantly.

"I thought we had each other?" I countered, when I said those words I wished I could take them back because of how weak they made me sound. Derek was going to reply when suddenly we heard a creak at the front door. We were upstairs in my brother's old room but when I was going to go out the door Derek put his hand on my shoulder stopping me from going any further.

"Derek! I know you're here!" Scott's voice rang through the dusty old house. "I know what you did!"

"I didn't do anything." Derek yelled, and I looked up at him with a questioning stare confused on what Scott was referring to.

"You killed him!" Scott yelled and I kept looking at Derek for any answers but I got none.

"He died." Derek replied, that's when it all clicked into place. Was that what Derek was doing when he forced me to go on that little adventure with Scott and Stiles? Of course I knew he would have never killed the bus driver, but I felt slightly hurt that he wouldn't tell any of this.

"Like your sister died?" The mention of our sister caused Derek and I to both stiffen. I felt slightly irritated with the way that Scott kept assuming that Derek would be capable of killing his own sister. That Scott and Stiles kept assuming that they knew us at all.

"My sister was missing. We came here looking for her." Derek replied slowly getting out of the room and towards the staircase.

"You found her."

"I found her in pieces, being used as bait to catch us." Derek yelled slowly being consumed by anger. Although I knew she was gone I just couldn't accept the way that we lost her.

"I think you killed them both. I'm gonna tell everyone, starting with the sheriff." Scott replied and with that Derek ran out of the room. I quickly ran after him just in time to see Derek push Scott down the stairs causing him to stumble all the way down.

Scott landed on all fours and then he turned around his eyes were glowing a bright yellow, and that's when I realized that things were only going to get progressively worse from here. Derek jumped off the top of the stairs landing right in front of Scott and what I definitely did not expect was Scott getting a hold of my brother that is twice his size and throwing him across the room and through the wall. I stood there unsure of whether to be impressed or angry.

Scott went into the other room and I quickly made my way down the stairs to continue to witness their little fight.

"Huh. That was cute." Derek said as he got up and began to take his black leather jacket off. When he shifted Scott immediately attacked, or at least attempted to since he was being thrown and punched across the room. He was only able to get a few good shots at Derek, until Derek got a hold of his jacket and began to repeatedly slam him against the floor.

Seeing that this was going too far I ran and pushed Derek away from Scott. "Enough." I yelled at Derek with my hand on his chest. I felt as Scott got up from behind me, and when he jumped up on the table in an attempt to get to Derek I got a hold of the collar of his shirt mid jump and slammed him down against the floor. "I said enough!" I growled and only then did he seem to come back to himself, and slowly pushed himself off of the floor.

"I didn't kill him. Neither of us did. It's not your fault, and it's not mine." Derek explained as he began to dust himself off.

"This? This is all your fault! You ruined my life!" Scott completely snapped, Derek and I just stood and looked at each other, we both expected this response. We were a clear vessel for Scott's anger, we were the only ones with answers. We were the only ones he could come to for help or that understood what he was going through.

Scott didn't like that he had to rely on us.

"No, I didn't." Derek said, void of any emotion.

"You're the one who bit me!" Scott yelled in frustration.

"No, I'm not."

Scott looked shocked at this revelation, although I've repeatedly explained to both him and Stiles that we were not involved in his transformation. "What!"

"I'm not the one that bit you. There's another." Derek replied vaguely, but Scott deserved to know more. He was now caught in the middle of this.

"It's called an Alpha." I informed him, although I wasn't sure if he was ready for the news, he had the right to know what we are up against. "It's the most dangerous of our kind."

"Us, we're Betas." Derek continued to explain as he gestured to the three of us. "This thing is more powerful, more animal than any of us. My older sister came here looking for him. Now we're trying to find him. But I don't think we can do it without you."

"Why me?" Scott frantically asked.

"Because he's the one that bit you." I stated as if it weren't obvious enough.

"You're part of his pack. It's you, Scott. You're the one he wants." My brother continued to explain and all the blood seemed to drain from Scott's face. The realization that all of this was much bigger than he initially believed undoubtedly scaring him.

And as difficult as it was to admit I was scared too.
