06| Innocent
When I stepped inside the school Monday morning the smell of blood was prominent through the halls. I followed the scent outside of the school parking lot, which was full of police officers busy at work and attempting to keep students as far away from the scene as possible. At the center of the crime scene was one of the school buses with the door ripped from its hinges and covered in blood. I stood there analyzing the gruesome scene when I heard two familiar sets of footsteps coming my way.
"I think it did." Stiles said opening the doors, they continued to walk outside til they were standing beside me.
"What did?" I asked as I looked accusingly at the pair. Scott seemed moments away from losing his mind as he looked out at the blood stained parking lot.
"I don't know...I just...I can't..." Scott began to ramble so I pulled him by the collar of his shirt.
"Tell me what happened."
"Well I had this dream where Allison and I were in a bus outside of the school." Scott quickly began to explain, shaking his head as if the action would cause the memory to go away. "And we'll we were you know... making out in the back of the bus, and I slowly began to pull her clothes off and..."
I put my hand up not wanting to hear any of the details. "Get to the point Scott."
"Okay, right. Well then I shifted and I attacked her on the bus and well it just felt very real." He continued, and I looked out at the scene to check if Allison's scent was lingering, but it wasn't. I had a feeling that this was the alpha's doing, but I had to talk to Derek about it first. "Come on, help me find her."
"She's probably fine." Stiles assured him as we walked down the halls of the school. I considered leaving, but my curiosity one over the anger that continued to feel towards Scott and Stiles.
"She's not answering my texts, Stiles!"
"It could just be a coincidence, all right?" Stiles attempted to comfort his best friend. "A seriously amazing coincidence."
"No, not really." I replied, earning an irritated glance from Stiles.
"Alex, you're not helping." He said as we continued to follow the panicked Scott down the halls of the school.
"Well, we can't just lie to him either." I countered. "Best case scenario is that she realized that you aren't worth her time.
"Just help me find her, okay?" Scott ordered as he turned around for a second to look at us before he continued his search. "Do you see her?"
"No." Stiles and I replied in unison. Suddenly I caught Allison's scent and stopped in the middle of the hallway causing Stiles to bump into me.
"Why did you stop?" He asked as he looked around for Scott who was long gone. I walked down the hall and towards my locker knowing that Scott would eventually find her.
"Because Allison is here." I simply stated as I continued to walk, I was still pissed about what happened on Saturday and I wanted nothing to do with these two anymore.
"How do you know? I mean why didn't Scott sense her too?" He continued to ask but I only continued to ignore him until got a hold of my arm forcing me to stop. I pulled my arm back and gave him a warning glare. He seemed to get the message because he sighed and looked away from me. "I'm sorry about what happened the other night. I know I shouldn't have looked into something so personal to you. And I'm also sorry for putting your brother in jail."
"Your apology means nothing to me." I replied as I continued to walk down the hall, I knew I wasn't going to be able to get rid of him especially considering that we had out next class together.
"Will you stop walking away from me?" He asked but it sounded more of an order so I quickly turned around to face him.
"Oh I'm walking away from you. So how about you stop following me."
"Okay why do we always end up fighting?"
"Oh I don't know, maybe it's because you're annoying and are always asking me questions nonstop. Or how about you continue to look into things that are none of your business. Or that you put my brother in jail." I said, trying to stay as calm as possible but that was proving itself to be impossible.
"Attention, students, this is your principal." Everyone in the hallway stopped to listen to the announcement that just came over the intercom. "I know you're all wondering about the incident that occurred last night to one of our buses. While the police work to determine what happened, classes will proceed as scheduled. Thank you."
Everyone groaned in disappointment but continued to walk to their next class. "Your not like Scott right?" Stiles continued to ask as we stopped in front of my locker. It was like he hadn't even heard a word that I said something that only made me more frustrated. "I mean like your abilities or whatever are different, not like other werewolves. Because I've noticed things like your heightened senses, like Scotts are heightened too but yours are stronger. That you shift differently, like your eyes color it's not like Scott or Derek's. Then there's..."
"If I tell you, will you shut the hell up?" I asked as I slammed my locker shut. He quickly nodded and I decided how much I exactly wanted to tell him. "To be honest I don't really know much about what I am. I'm a werewolf just not like the others. You can say I'm like the pack link."
"Cool." Stiles commented but I knew he was still confused and wanted more answers. "So are you linked to all werewolves?"
"No, only the people I accept as part of the pack." I say leaning against the cold lockers, knowing it's going to take a while to explain everything to Stiles. "But like I said I don't even know much about what I can do."
"Why don't you?"
"Do you ever stop asking questions?" I groaned.
"You're just a big mystery. I mean you literally come back out of nowhere after years of being gone." He began to explain his arms making large gestures in the process. "Then all this crazy shit happens so quickly I just can't keep up with it anymore."
"Well trust me things are going to get a lot crazier in this town."
Paying attention in class was proving itself to be more difficult than I thought as Stiles and Scott began to create wild theories about what could have happened last night. As idiotic as their suggestions were what was even more frustrating was their complete disregard of whether other people were listening into their conversation.
"Maybe it was my blood on the door." I heard Scott say from behind me.
"Could have been animal blood." Stiles suggested hopefully. "You know, maybe you caught a rabbit or something."
"And did what?" He asked curiously.
"Ate it."
"Raw?" Scott asked, panicked at the thought.
"No, you stopped to bake it in a little werewolf oven." Stiles replied sarcastically. "I don't know, you're the one who can't remember anything."
I turned around and looked Scott in the eyes. "First of all that was human blood, so you probably ate yourself a human. And second of all, if you two are going to talk about this now, can you keep it down?"
"Ms. Hale, will you turn around?" Mr. Harris ordered and I mentally strangled the two idiots in front of me. "I think you, Mr. Stilinski, Mr. McCall would benefit from a little distance, yes? Let me know if the separation anxiety gets too much."
The three of us grabbed our belongings and filled in the open seats scattered around the room. I took a seat in the middle of class next to some kid I didn't even know. I opened up my book to the page we were working on when I noticed the kid I was sitting next to staring at me. "Hey, I'm Issac." He introduced himself with a large smile on his face, he had curly hair and blue eyes, and I think I began to recognize him from when I was younger.
"Alexis." Was all I replied before I continued to write down notes on everything Harris was teaching.
"Hey, I think they found something." One of the girls announced looking out of the window, causing the rest of the class to crowd around the window to see what was going on. The paramedics were pulling out a gurney with an unconscious man laying on it.
"That's not a rabbit."Scott said standing next to me as he looked out at the scene with horror. Suddenly the man shot up from the gurney with a scream, causing everyone in the room to gasp in surprise.
"Okay. This is good, this is good. He got up, he's not dead." Stiles began to ramble in an attempt to make the situation better. "Dead guys can't do that."
"Guys I did that." He realized as tears began to flood his eyes. I knew we had a real problem here especially because I could catch Scott's scent from the scene, but then there was also another masked scent that I knew had to me the Alphas. Which meant that the Alpha was exerting his control of Scott as his beta.
I was sitting alone at one of the lunch tables eating an apple when Scott placed his tray in front of me and sat down. And then Stiles did the same taking a seat next to me. I sighed wondering what I ever did to deserve this kind of torture. "Something happened last night, and I can't remember what." Scott said to Stiles.
"What makes you so sure that Derek and Alexis have all the answers?" He replied as if I wasn't even there.
"Because during the full moon they didn't change." Scott continued to explain. "They were in total control while I was running around in the middle of the night attacking some totally innocent guy."
"You don't know that." Stiles added, and I only looked between the two asking myself when I was going to be acknowledged.
"I don't not know it." Scott countered before looking at me. "Can you help me figure all of this out?"
"I can't but my brother can." I told him, and Stiles groaned as he shoved some fries in his mouth. "I can't help you because I don't know what he knows. But what I do know is that you're dangerous."
"I can't go out with Allison." Scott groaned as he realized that he could put her life in danger, but he still didn't seem to understand the bigger implications of the situation that he was in. "I have to cancel."
"No, you're not canceling, okay? You can't just cancel your entire life." Stiles replied as he looked at me for back up which I wasn't going to give. "We'll figure it out."
"Figure what out?" Lydia questioned as she sat beside Scott. The three of us looked at each other completely confused as to why Lydia was sitting at our table. "Heck! I don't even know why these two dummies think it okay to sit at this table."
"Ha! Just, uh, homework." Stiles quickly said and Lydia only nodded, losing complete interest on the subject.
"Why is she sitting with us?" Stiles asked when suddenly Allison took a seat next to Scott, then followed by Danny who took a seat next to me and some other guy who I didn't recognize that took a stateside Lydia.
"Get up."Jackson ordered one of the guys that was sitting next to Lydia.
"How come you never ask Danny to get up?" The guy asked.
"Because I don't stare at his girlfriend's coin slot." Danny replied as he took a bite of his apple.
I glared over at Stiles who was sitting on my other side, and he still seemed extremely confused. "See what you two have done, now they think it's okay to sit here." I practically growled at him, but he just shrugged as he began to shovel fries into his mouth.
"So I hear they're saying it's some type of animal attack." Danny said, sparking up some conversation. "Probably a cougar."
"I heard mountain lion." Jackson added.
"A cougar is a mountain lion." Lydia corrected, and then when she realized all eye were looking at her in surprise she went back to acting dumb. "Isn't it?"
"Who cares? The guy's probably some homeless tweaker who's gonna die anyway." Jackson heartlessly commented earning some surprised looks from the others.
"How about you show a little compassion?" I suggested, and that seemed to shut him up.
"Actually, I just found out who it is." Stiles announced as he faced his phone towards us so that we could look at the video. "Check it out."
"The Sheriff's Department won't speculate on details of the incident but confirmed the victim, Garrison Meyers, did survive the attack." The reporter said as images of what happened were shown on the news report. "Meyers was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition."
"I know this guy." Scott informed as a picture of the bus driver was shown.
"You do?" I questioned suddenly intrigued.
"Yeah, when I used to take the bus back when I lived with my dad. He was the driver."
"Can we talk about something slightly more fun, please?" Lydia asked absently, picking at her food. "Like, oh, where are we going tomorrow night? You said you and Scott were hanging out tomorrow night, right?"
Allison looked at Scott for some sort of help, but all he did was shrug. "Um, we were thinking of what we were gonna do."
"Well, I am not sitting home again watching lacrosse videos," Lydia declared. "so if the four of us are hanging out, we are doing something fun."
"Hanging out? Like, the four of us?" Allison didn't seem entirely on board with the idea as she turned to Scott who once again seemed to be in another place entirely. "Do you wanna hang out, like us and them?"
"Yeah, I guess." Scott nervously replied, the whole scene becoming extremely painful to watch. "Sounds fun."
"You know what else sounds fun? Stabbing myself in the face with this fork." Jackson irritatedly announced as he picked up a fork.
"Go ahead, you'd be doing all of us a favor." I mumbled under my breath, and Danny laughed at my words. Lydia only rolled her eyes as she took the fork away from her boyfriend.
"How about bowling?" Lydia excitedly suggested as she looked over at Jackson. "You love to bowl."
"Yeah, with actual competition." Jackson said unamused with the idea.
"How do you know we're not actual competition? You can bowl, right?" Allison asked Scott who seemed to be getting more uncomfortable by the second. Next to me Stiles was beginning to get irritated by the whole scene itself as he continued to sloppily shove fries in his mouth. Annoyed with the action I pulled the tray of fries away from him and handed him an apple.
"Sort of." Scott shyly replied, and it was clear that he didn't want to make a fool of himself by saying that he didn't know how.
"Is it sort of, or yes?" Jackson challenged as slightly he leaned over the table towards Scott.
"Yes. In fact, I'm a great bowler." Scott countered, and I'm pretty sure everyone at the table could see through that lie. After ten torturous minutes of sitting through lunch with that group I found myself walking down the stairs of the school with Scott and Stiles trailing behind me.
"You're a terrible bowler." Stiles scolded.
"I know! I'm such an idiot." Scott agreed, and although I attempted to walk faster they also seemed to pick up speed to walk beside me.
"God, it was like watching a car wreck. I mean, first it turned into the whole group date thing. And then out of nowhere comes that phrase." Stiles began to say in frustration. "Hang out. You don't hang out with hot girls, okay? It's like death. Right Alex?"
"He has a point." I said playing along with all his rambling.
"See once it's hanging out, you might as well be her gay best friend." Stiles continued after my confirmation, and that only seemed to stress out Scott even more. "You and Danny can start hanging out."
"How is this happening? I either killed a guy or I didn't." Scott said under his breath, for once focusing on something more important than his blossoming romance with Allison.
"I don't think Danny likes me very much." Stiles said to himself.
"I ask Allison on a date, and now we're hanging out." Scott said, suddenly going back to Allison and I rolled my eyes deciding it was best to ignore them.
"Am I not attractive to gay guys?"
"I make firstline, and the team captain wants to destroy me, and now, now I'm gonna be late for work." Scott said as he quickly ran down the hall.
"Wait, Scott, you didn't..." Stiles attempted to call after Scott but he had already disappeared in the crowd of people. I continued to walk ahead when he stopped in front of me blocking my way. "Am I attractive to gay guys?"
"You're not attractive to anyone, because you're annoying." I said as I tried to walk around him but he continued to follow.
"Okay, then how do I get a girl like you... no scratch that, a girl like Lydia to notice me." He asked, seeming truly distressed by the need to know.
"I don't know, maybe you talk to her?" I replied, giving him the obvious answer.
"I have, I've tried but she still won't notice me." He explained and I sighed looking around the hall hoping that something would happen to make Stiles leave me alone.
"You like Lydia right?" I asked and he nodded in confirmation. "Okay then just go for it."
He stopped and then just looked at me in shock. "It's not that easy!"
"Of course it is, you're just making it more complicated than it is." I replied, already getting bored with this conversation and finally stepping out of the school. Looking out into the parking lot to find Derek already waiting caused a wave of relief to flood through me. "If you do then you'll know if you ever have a chance. Now don't bother me again with your girl problems. Or any of your problems for that matter."
With that I walked down the steps of the school and stepped inside the car. The look on Derek's face told me that we had a big problem on our hands with today's current events. It seemed that our quick trip to Beacon Hills was going to be a lot longer than we initially planned.
A/N: These are some long upcoming chapters that are taking pretty long to edit as I'm kind of a perfectionist, but I'm also lazy so the chapters might also not be 100% to my standard as I'm also writing my other stories. I've been getting questions about the love interest and my answer is still that you'll have to wait and see. Warning that this is a slow burn and I mean slow burn as in I currently have it planned that they won't get together until season 4. But the fun part is the mystery of what direction the romance is going as there will be some misdirects so beware.
