22: Jealous

Y/n hadn't even really looked at me since she got out of that interrogation.

Satoru told me I couldn't join them, and I didn't fight him back on it. I definitely should've. I should've been there, but I couldn't bare to face her.

And now I had to since she said she wanted me to go to the village with them.

She stopped as we all made it back to the black car waiting for us, "Seriously, you guys can't all show up to my village in your sorcery outfits."

"Why? Too many Protectors there? Don't worry, we can handle ourselves," Gojo huffed.

She sighed, "I honestly have no idea, but my grandmother is there, and she hates sorcerers."

"Please," she said again impatiently. "Can you guys change clothes?"

"Your grandmother?" I asked her.

She glanced over at me, "Yes, and she's really old now. I don't want to piss her off."

"Just go do it," Nanami quickly interrupted. "You're both wasting time."

"Eh, fine," Satoru walked away, and I followed behind him so we could go change.

Satoru smirked at me, "Nanami's taken quite a liking to Y/n, have you noticed?"

"Shut up Satoru," I mumbled.

"I figured he did when he said she would be a good mom. We all know how badly he wants to have kids," he continued. "But now it's even more obvious."

"You got what you wanted. She hates me now, so can you just stop?"

He laughed as he waved his hand, "Eh, fine. Fine."

The car ride was long. Y/n was in the backseat with Nanami, and as she fell asleep, I noticed her head fall down on his shoulder.

She was out when it happened, but it infuriated me as Satoru's words rang inside my head. And it's not like Nanami bothered to move her.

"I don't know where to go from here," he huffed out after we ran out of freeway to drive on. "Wake her up."

I turned around to do it, but Nanami beat me to it.

He was gently rubbing her leg as he spoke, his voice coming out as a soft whisper, "Hey, Y/n...."

He used her first name?

Her eyes slowly opened and she smiled when she saw him, picking up her head off his shoulder.

"Sorry I fell asleep on you," she mumbled as she rubbed her eyes away.

"That's alright," he smiled softly at her. "You've been through a lot."

Now he's even smiling at her...

"We need directions," I spoke in a much more demanding and mean tone than I meant to. I was being consumed with jealously.

"Mm?" she grabbed onto Satoru's seat in front of her as she peeked over to stare out the front windshield. "Yea, just keep going down that road," She pointed.

"The dirt road?" Satoru asked.

She laughed, "Yes, the dirt road. I told you guys it's out here in the middle of nowhere."

"You're from a small village then?" Nanami asked as she leaned back in her seat.

"Yea, it's a lot smaller now too, but it's home."

"Smaller because of the sorcerers who attacked?"

I was watching her from the mirror, and her eyes quickly shuffled downward as she nodded, "Yes."

"How does a village even survive out here?" Gojo mumbled.

"Crops. But it's been hard for them to bounce back, so I send them money," she spoke as she looked out the window.

"I was the first in my village to go to college, and now I'm a doctor. So I pay my bills and loans, but the rest goes to my grandma to make sure everyone is taken care of."

I closed my eyes and let out a soft sigh as she told us that... That explains why she's always saying she's broke. It didn't make any sense before, but it does now.

Of course she takes care of her family. Of course she's fucking perfect. What the hell is wrong with me?

"You're very selfless," Nanami told her, making my hands squeeze into tight fists, my knuckles turning white.

"Thanks Nanami!" she beamed as she sat up again, pointing across Satoru, "Turn down this road next."

"Can you back up?" he muttered out at her. "How are you even in such a good mood still?"

"I get to see my grandma!" she rested her head on the side of his seat as she looked at him. "I know you hate me, but I still think we'll be friends someday."

He smirked, "I admire your optimism."

She hummed as she sat back again, not really paying attention to much of anything. She was just so hard to read. I mean, Satoru was right, she should be furious, not her normal happy self.

"Ah! Do you see it!? It's coming up!!" she beamed as she stared out the window.

"Look, there's lots of kids in the village too, so don't be all scary and shit. Just be normal as you snoop around."

"Can we meet you grandmother?" Nanami asked.

She whipped her head around to look at him, "Really!? Do you want to!?"

He nodded, "Yes."

"Ahh Nanami!" she laughed as she threw her arms around him for a hug. "That'd be amazing! You guys definitely should!!"

She was still giggling as she pulled away from him, "She loves visitors! Please just don't tell her anything about all of this ok? I don't need her to know the kind of trouble I'm in right now."

Satoru had stopped the car, so as soon as she said that, she bolted out the door.

The people were all eyeing the mysterious car closely, but as Y/n got out, bright smiles crossed their faces. She was immediately swarmed, giving hugs to everyone, laughing and smiling with them.

I watched as she knelt down and said hello to all the kids, and I was falling more in love with her every moment.

"She does kinda make it hard to hate her huh?" Satoru mumbled. "Eh, oh well. Let's just hurry up so we can get back to civilization."

Yea I wish he would've thought that way before this morning happened... I really can't stand him sometimes.

Not that I can blame him for all of this. I made my own terrible choices today.

Satoru and Nanami got out of the car, walking over to join her. Y/n introduced them both, linking her arm with Nanami's as she spoke.

I pushed my hands back through my hair, trying to somehow regain composure even though it seemed impossible.

Nanami and Satoru were dragged away by the laughing kids and Y/n just stayed there to watch, kind of talking to the people around her.

I finally got out, walking towards her as she stood there by herself.

"Are you ok?" I asked as I realized tears had formed in her eyes.

She laughed as she quickly wiped them away, "Yea, I'm great. I'm just so happy to be here."

I should've focused more on what she was saying, but I just couldn't, "So you got a thing for Nanami now?"

Her eyes quickly shot up to meet mine, "What did you just say?"

"I know you heard me."

She whipped around on her heels to face me, shoving her fingers into my chest, "I told you I want to be with you forever, that I'll always love you, literally like 8 hours ago, and you have the nerve to ask that shit?"

I sighed and looked down as she spoke because she wasn't wrong, and I am such an idiot, "I'm sorry, you've just been close to him all day."

"Yea, well, while you left me to get tied up and threatened, he was there looking out for me. As my friend, Suguru."

"Which is a lot more than I can say for you."

I had nothing to say for myself so I watched quietly as she walked off, shocked when she stopped and turned back to me.

"You coming?" she asked.

"Oh, uh, where?"

"To meet my grandmother."

I smiled softly as I jogged to catch up with her.

I looked at her with wide eyes and a dropped jaw as she grabbed my hand and intertwined hers with mine.

"What?" she peeked up at me. "Is this not ok anymore?"

"N-no, it definitely is."

She nodded as she looked back in front of her, a small smile forming, "I like the bracelet. It looks good on you."
