14: Innocent

**Geto POV**

I was on guard as we all made our way over to the training grounds. Once Satoru finished telling them all about Y/n, they had so many questions.

Or that's what they said. I'm sure they were actually pissed about it, but after realizing Satoru and I planned on keeping her alive and well, they quickly took a different approach.

I smiled as she came into view, feeling myself get riled up just at the sight of her. She had a smirk on her face as she stood there waiting for Nanami to attack.

It looked like they had been sparring for a while now since she had taken off her top layer and was just left in a short tank top, wiping the sweat on her forehead.

Meanwhile, Nanami looked like he was getting more than he bargained for. He had taken off his jacket and undid his top buttons, and he even had his tie wrapped around his fist.

They must be taking this pretty seriously, but Y/n seemed to be enjoying herself as the students stood and watched them in awe. Even the second years had stopped to observe.

"I thought the students were supposed to be the ones training?" Satoru called out.

Y/n stood up straight as we got closer, smiling brightly as she looked at me. It was hard to focus on anything else as I met her gaze. The sight of her skin glistening in sweat was way too much for me to handle.

"Well Nanami here didn't believe that I could fight, so I thought I'd show him a thing or two," she teased as she nudged him.

He gave her an annoyed glance, not giving her the reaction she was clearly looking for but enough to make her still laugh.

I absolutely loved the sound of her laugh.

"Y/n-sensei is amazing!!" Yuuji yelled as she walked to grab her long sleeve and sword off the ground, slinging it back over her.

Maki crossed her arms as she glared at me and Satoru, "Yea, she should be training us. Not either of you."

"Hey!" Satoru whined. "Not cool! You don't even know her!"

"Tuna tuna."

"Ahh thank you, Toge! At least someone's nice to me!" Satoru yelled.

Megumi scoffed, "He said he'd rather work with Y/n-sensei."

"Eh!!?!" Satoru was going to start complaining more but was quickly interrupted.

"Y/n, is it?" Yaga asked, and she just nodded as she looked up at him. "Are you planning on joining us for a while?"

"No," she shook her head. "I have work tomorrow."

Satoru smirked, "No you don't. I made a couple calls and arranged it all for you. You'll have the next week off."

We could all tell she was pissed, but she didn't say a word. She just stared at him as her tongue licked across her teeth before she pursed her lips. If looks could kill, we'd definitely all be dead.

"I want the Guardian Sword back," Naoya snarled as he walked towards her.

She smirked and crossed her arms as he approached her. I went to intervene, but Satoru quickly put his arm on my shoulder, shaking his head as I looked back at him.

He didn't need to say anything, I already knew what he was thinking. He wanted them to see her strength. It would be just another deterrent to trying to hurt her.

I made myself listen to him because when it came to her, I already knew that all logic went out the window. This is probably the only time in our friendship he's ever been more levelheaded than me.

"Hand it over," Naoya added. "Now!"

She raised a brow at him, her eyes flickering across him, "I think I like hearing you beg."

Satoru let out an obnoxious laugh, "Her attitude is so much more fun when it's not directed at me!"

Naoya let out a growl as he raced towards her, freezing once he touched her with his palm and nothing happened. We all watched as his eyes went wide once his technique failed to work.

"My turn," she smirked. I was amazed as she spun and landed a kick to face, creating enough space between them to wield her sword.

As soon as it was out of the sheath, the engravings on it turned a blueish-white color, filling with her ice technique.

The Guardian Sword was a special grade cursed tool that the user could embed with their technique, causing the blade to be nearly impenetrable.

And with the effortless way she used it, she must have been training with it for most her life. It was like an extension of herself.

She carefully slashed the blade, making it so it only cut through the edge of his clothes. As a top layer of fabric fell, leaving part of his arm and chest exposed, she put the point of the sword at his neck.

"I'll let you keep it if you can actually take it from me," she huffed out, her eyes more serious and dangerous than I'd ever seen.

And she had the nerve to call me scary all those times? Where did this even come from? It's like a switch flipped inside of her, turning her into whoever the hell this was.

Not that I mind. It was kind of hot. Especially since I hate Naoya... It was all just very unexpected.

"The sword is yours," Naobito spoke up as he went and put his hand on Naoya's shoulder. "Please forgive my son. His arrogance gets the best of him."

I was skeptical of the interaction since Naoya is the spitting image of his father. Naobito must be up to something...

"Let us introduce ourselves," he continued. Y/n paid close attention as each one stated their names and affiliation.

Being a doctor, she was brilliant, and I could tell she was intensely piecing together everything she had learned so far. She didn't know much about sorcery, and I'm sure she was focused on making sense of it all.

"So, your ice technique is inherited?" Naobito asked.

"No. I don't have an inherited technique."

Satoru spoke up, "Then you have two innate techniques? How would that be?"

She shook her head, "No, just the one."

"Ahh! Don't make me ask every single question!" Satoru groaned. "Just explain it! You know what we want to know."

I smirked because it was true... Y/n seemed to also be fairly cunning, only offering up the information she was specifically asked for, leaving as many holes in her story as possible.

She sighed loudly, "I can't believe I have to explain sorcery to sorcerers..."

"Once you understand the rules and limitations of your technique, the possibilities are endless as long as you have a little imagination.

"My technique started out as the disabling or cancelation of cursed energy, but as I continued to train, I had a realization that I could push it further. So I did."

"What do you mean?" Satoru asked.

She looked at me as she spoke, "Think of a bank account for example. You can cancel it, or, synonymously.."

"You can freeze it," Satoru mumbled as he crouched down deep in thought.

"Exactly," she nodded. "So I learned how to freeze my cursed energy, creating the ice technique. It was within the bounds of my innate technique, so it came rather easily."

"And this is why she should be training us," Maki huffed out, making Y/n smirk a little.

Satoru stood back up, dusting his hands off a bit, "No wonder Protectors have been able to evade everyone for so long. Crafty bitches."

"Protector?" Megumi asked, looking suspiciously at Y/n.

"Mm yes, that's what your beloved Y/n-sensei is."

Yuuji furrowed his brows, "Y/n-sensei, what's a Protector."

"Cursed users who have disrupted the balance of sorcery," Gakuganji glared. "Thieves. Raiders. Terrorists. All would've been more accurate titles. You are not a protector of anything."

Y/n ignored him completely as she turned her attention to the stunned students, "Protectors are a band of users who broke away from traditional sorcery to safeguard and watch over non curse users."

"So, like, help regular humans?" Yuuji asked as he tilted his head.

"Mm."

"Well, why would that be a bad thing? I want to protect people too."

"Wanna be my first recruit?" she teased, causing him to laugh excitedly. It had been a handful of hours, and these kids loved her so much.

"Ahh! Can I?!"

"Enough!" Gakuganji yelled out. "That is not at all what you are!"

"Listen old guy," she returned her attention to us. "That is exactly who I am. And I take my oath very seriously."

"Your oath is built on treason," Yaga added.

"Maybe," she agreed as she nodded her head. "But every revolution has started with treason. That doesn't mean it's wrong."

"So you want a revolution?"

"I want balance," she corrected. "Sorcerers abuse their powers, and I'm here to make sure you all remember your place."

Naobito eyed her, "Our place?"

"It seems you're the one who's forgotten their place, woman," Naoya hissed.

"You say that as if it's an insult, but I'm the one who just kicked your ass so you should watch yourself," Y/n snarled back.

I know that now probably wasn't the best time, but I couldn't help it... Every time she spoke I fell in love a little more.

"Can you explain more about what a Protector is?" Maki asked. "I'd like to understand."

"Protectors aren't new, but they don't go as far back as the beginning of sorcery. The initiative started a few hundred years ago."

Satoru interrupted, "When the cursed objects first started goin missing."

"That's right," she nodded. "Our first act was to hide the special grade cursed objects that were being used too frequently."

"You see, the clans and leaders of the sorcerer world were at war with themselves and each one was doing whatever they could to gain power.

"They were consistently using special grade objects to defeat opponents, but when one uses a cursed object of that magnitude, cursed spirits are attracted to the energy.

"This was causing hundreds of humans to be slaughtered across the world. The clans were careless with human lives, not caring who was caught in the crossfire of their attacks and definitely not caring if anyone was killed by curses.

"That's when the first Protectors banded together. They took the cursed objects and hid them, sticking to the shadows as they hunted down curses, cursed users, and sorcerers who were mindlessly murdering anyone that got in their way.

"Protectors are here to restore balance to a world where sorcerers believed that human life is dispensable and that they're superior."

"We are superior," Naoya interjected.

Her answer was cold and firm, "No. You're not."

"So do you know where the other cursed objects are?" Gakuganji asked.

She kept a stern look and remained silent, making it clear there was no way in hell she was answering that. Which we all knew it meant she does know.

"If you're a protector, how come you know so little about the sorcery world?" Nanami spoke up.

"I didn't want to be a Protector," she answered honestly. "So I stopped long ago, only picking it back up within the last few years."

"Why did you decided to come back?"

"Because some sorcerers killed my parents along with most of my village in search of the cursed objects."

My eyes went wide as she spoke. I had no idea that was what brought her back to the Protectors. She was doing this to carry on her parent's legacy.

I wonder why she didn't want to be a Protector in the first place? I wonder why she ever left the organization?

I had been quiet this entire time, wanting to hang on to every word. Honestly, I didn't know what to say. I just wanted to listen and learn everything I could about her.

But now, all I wanted to do was hold her and let her know she'd never have to worry about anything ever again.

While she made it her mission to protect the world, I would make it my purpose to protect her.

"I'm sorry for your loss," Yaga bowed his head slightly.

"Do you know who did it?" Satoru asked.

"Yes."

"What they did is unacceptable," Yaga added. "We should bring them in for questioning."

"No need." Her eyes were dark and emotionless now, "I already took care of them."
