Chapter Four
After a long first week of school, it was finally Saturday, feeling elated that I had a break from all the stress and headache of it all.
Since I asked my dad about work, he badgered on about this new partnership. It was Saturday evening and we were getting ready to go to the 'new business partners' house for dinner.
I scanned myself in the mirror, tugging at the dress that sat uncomfortably on my body. I rarely wore dresses, but mum insisted to make an effort.
The bottle green dress hung just over my knees. The ruched bodice showcased my figure. The square neckline wasn't too low, I was counting my lucky stars it didn't have a plunging neckline. The puffy sleeves were allowing my arms to breath, with it being cinched at the wrists. My dark brown hair, was tied into a low ponytail and I paired black ballet flats to complete my look.
My mum peered her head around the door. "Are you ready?"
With no emotion to my face, I nodded, picking up my black side bag and slinging it onto my shoulder.
"I know you and Ava don't want to go, but this is important to your dad. Brian and Mary have been kind to invite us over, and their kids-"
"Kids?" I blurted out.
"Well when Robert was going on and on about this business deal, he said something about kids, I zoned out." My mum chuckled, placing her arm around my shoulder.
"Great I bet they have annoying kids that run around and make you go crazy." I said rolling my eyes.
After leaving the house, we made our way to the car where my dad and Ava were already waiting. From afar I could sense the annoyance radiating from Ava. Her sunken head and straight lips, showcased how I was pretty much feeling.
Getting into the car, Ava slightly brightened up, and mouthed asking if I had my inhaler. Nodding and patting my side bag, I reassured her that I had it, in case of an emergency.
Like me, Ava never was the one to wear dresses. She had the odd one here and there to wear on special occasions. This was one of those days, where she had to retrieve her midi smock dress, black with white floral detailing scattered all over.
As we drove to the house of unknown Brian and Mary, my eyes wandered out of the window. Watching the flurry of lights zoom past, creating a mixture of waves, emitting different colours. I took a mental note of what I was seeing, the artistic side in me felt inspired to paint.
After fifteen minutes of driving, we finally arrived. I gathered my bearings and noticed we entered in a quiet cul-de-sac. We walked up to a detached modern house, ringing the doorbell, we waited.
I side eye towards Ava, who was doing the same. It was like we could read each others mind. My face was telling her to brace herself, as we didn't know what to expect.
The door swung open, to be welcomed by a man roughly the same age as my dad. His hair was slicked back, light brown with specs of grey scattered. He had hooded green coloured eyes, that almost seemed familiar to me. Behind his light grey stubble, he showcased a wide smile, bringing my dad into a hug.
"Robert! Welcome, please come in." Brian beamed, waving for us to enter.
"This is Angela, my wife. Hannah and Ava, my two beautiful daughters." My dad proudly introduced us.
Brian shook our hands, evidently happy to see us. "Lovely to meet you! You've come at the right time. The food is ready, so let's not waste time and tuck in."
As we followed Brian into the dining room, I took in the features and design of the house. Most of the house was neutral, from the cream coloured carpets to the beige coloured walls. We walked through the living room, to get to the dining room, where we meet Mary.
Mary had beautiful curly brown hair, that fell just below her shoulders. Almond shaped eyes, a straight nose and bow-shaped lips, made the features of her face; yet again it seemed familiar.
"Hello, how are you? I'm so glad you made it." Mary chimed in a soft tone. "The kids are still upstairs, they should be down, but please sit down the food is hot and fresh."
My heart sunk at the mention of the kids. I couldn't hear screaming or crying, so I gathered that her kids were older. Peering over to Ava, I could sense she was feeling uncomfortable, as she nervously bit down on her lower lip. Placing my hand on her arm, I lift my brows to see if she was okay, she nodded reassuringly as a response.
"Is it okay if I use the bathroom real quick?" I asked, feeling the need to freshen up.
"Of course! You're better off using the one upstairs. It's the first door you see as you walk up." Mary happily responded.
Making my way over to the stairs I saw as we entered the house, I wearily walked up, feeling on edge. I set sight on then door Mary mentioned, and found myself in the bathroom.
Closing and locking the door, I wandered my eyes around. The tiles on the floor were white and grey, which went with the grey walls, finished with the white toilet, basin and bathtub. The bathroom was quite minimalistic and simple.
Walking over to the basin, my reflection hits me as I looked at my appearance in the mirror above the basin. So far I felt fine and I looked somewhat presentable.
After washing my hands, I quickly dried them and made an exit out of the bathroom. Just as I abruptly turned to walk down the stairs, I'm struck back by a body. My brain suddenly realised that I had bumped into someone.
Just as I was about to apologise, my head inched upwards, only for my eyes to widen so much to the point where it felt like they were going to pop out. I was frozen in place, my brain wasn't able to comprehend the person staring right back at me.
Right in front of me, with those deep green eyes piercing right into my soul, was Zac.
"What are you doing here?" I blurted out.
"What do you mean, what am I doing here?" Zac scoffed. "This is my house, what the hell are you doing here?"
My body jerks at the mention of Zac saying 'my house'. My mouth gaped open, trying to form words, but nothing was able to come out. It then slowly started to click in place.
"Oh no." I gasped. "So you're Brain and Mary's kid. Which means Lexi is their kid too." I said, acting like I had solved a puzzle.
"Well done genius, you know what parents are." Zac mumbled in a sarcastic manner. All of a sudden, it was like he was distracted by the surroundings around. I felt his eyes travel from the top to the bottom of me.
That's when I noticed he wasn't in his regular laid back attire. He was dressed in a navy shirt, with the top buttons undone. The shirt was neatly tucked into his black trousers, that were fitted perfectly around his legs. His light brown hair, was brushed neatly into place, creating soft waves.
I quickly stopped my wondering eyes. This was the longest we had been silent. We both stood there at the top of the stairs, not knowing what to say.
"You look different Hannah Montana." Zac let out with a smouldering look in his eyes.
"Yeah so do you." I bleakly responded.
He narrowed his eyes towards me, subtly moving them to peer at what I was wearing. Waving my hands towards the stairs, I gestured for him to take lead. He slowly turned around and made his way down, I closely followed.
My heart felt like it had sunk. After all this time with my dad constantly talking about this new business partner, Brian this, Brian that. Much to my luck, it turned about to be Zac and Lexi's father.
We entered the dining room, where I see Lexi sitting close to her mother, opposite Ava. They both were seething with pure disgust. Ava was clenching down on her jaws, gritting her teeth, almost showing she was angry. Lexi had her lips turned downwards, brows were furrowed to the point where it seemed like she was asleep.
"Ah! There you guys are." Mary chuckled. "I see you've met Zac. Angela, Robert, Ava, this is my son Zac."
I felt both Ava and I, internally rolled our eyes. An introduction was definitely not needed. Mary waved her hands for us to sit down, and the only seats that were free, were the ones next to each other.
I scrunched my nose at this predicament and internally screamed so loud, that I felt like I was about to scream for real.
Shyly I placed myself on the chair, with Zac right next to me. This was going to be a painful and awkward dinner. Whenever the weekend arrived, it felt like a weight shifted from my shoulders, as it was the time where I could escape the likes of Zac. But now with his father being my fathers new business partner, and them practically being good friend. I had a feeling I was going to be seeing more of Zac...
A/N
Who guessed that Zac's dad was the new business partner...
Uh oh seems like more trouble for Hannah...
Two more character have been introduced, Brian and Mary Carter, the parents of Zac and Lexi. Wouldn't want to be in Hannah and Ava's shoes...
