Chapter Fifteen
It had been a week since Ava told me her history with Lexi, and that was all I could think about. I tired to come up with various ways to keep the peace between them.
But every time I thought of a possible solution, it would be crumpled up and thrown away. Within a week Ava and Lexi had three arguments. Although it was petty disagreements, it showed a high chance of them unlikely being friends.
It was hard enough concentrating in school, as all I could think was about their situation.
As Saturday approached, I felt almost relieved, as I didn't have a pressure of focussing on school, and the teachers constant nattering to listen to them.
I found myself back in the library. Today, it was particularly overwhelming, a vast amount of people were darted around. Although the chatter was kept at a minimum, the high noise of whispers took the element of the library away.
I noticed Zac making his way to our desk, with two cups of vanilla lattes.
"Here you go, vanilla latte as requested." Zac placed the mug in front of me.
The frothy bubbles subtly floated around, mixed with the beige hue of the vanilla, creating a beautiful swirled pattern.
As Zac sat opposite and started to discuss more of our business project. My mind felt so distant, as if it wasn't in the same room. His words escaped his mouth, but his voice sounded far and mumbled.
"Hannah? Are you even listening?" Zac shook my arm and I was brought back.
All the sounds around me, came crashing back into my ears. I twitched at the sudden screech of the noises around me.
"What's up? You were in your own world," Zac chuckled.
"Did you know Ava and Lexi were friends in primary school?" I let out straight away, showcasing what had been gnawing away at me for the past week.
"Huh?" Zac tilted his head quizzically, not understanding my strange answer to his question.
"Ava and Lexi used to be friends," I repeated.
"And?" Zac furrowed his brows in confusion, still not getting how my point was supposedly connected with our work.
"We need to do something. Get them together to talk it out." I leaned back in my seat, putting my mind to work, trying to come up with a solution.
Zac stayed silent. It was like he was lost for words, not knowing how to respond to what I was saying.
I frantically bobbed my leg up and down, nipping away on the bottom of my lip. My mind was thinking fast like a race car. Milling over possible solutions. I knew I should have been focusing on our project, but I couldn't put their situation at the back of my mind.
All of sudden, it was like a lightbulb had flashed between my eyes.
"I got it!" I exclaimed, jerking myself forward from my seat. I received a few disproving stares from the people around me.
"Oh finally, I thought we were going spend the rest of our time in silence, with you in your own world," Zac responded sarcastically.
Ignoring his sarcasm, I proceeded to tell him my bright idea.
"The basement in the office. Lets trap them in there." My eyes were wide and my brows were raised. I felt a sudden rush of excitement, thinking about putting my plan into action.
"What the hell are you on about?" Zac was masked with sheer confusion, still not understanding where my thoughts were going.
"We can trap Ava and Lexi in the basement. That way they'll be forced to talk. They have to."
"Yeah, but how are we going to do that? My dad, even your dad, won't let us use their office. What if the door is fixed." Zac shrugged his shoulders, as he thought of the possibilities of the plan not working.
"You leave that with me. I'll convince my dad to let us use it, while the office is still closed. And if the door is fixed, I'm sure we can lock it from the outside. We just have to convince our sisters to meet us at the office. Trap them in there, and bam! They'll be friends again." I felt like a crazy scientist, trying to put my plan in motion.
Zac stayed silent again. Eyeing me up and down as if I had gone mad. He then let out a chuckle, leaning forward in his seat. His deep green eyes, gazed deep into mine. It was almost as if he had me in a trance with his eyes.
"You, Hannah Montana, are crazy."
Hearing him call me that name after so long, jerked my heart to miss a beat. It had been a while since he called me that. For some strange reason, it didn't enrage me. Instead I found it comical, like it was our inside joke.
"Well?" I prodded, trying to get out of his alluring gaze.
"This is going to be a shit show," Zac sighed. "But let's get the show on the road."
Zac brought his hands together and propped himself out of his seat, gathering his stuff. I yelped up out of my seat, feeling like an energised little bunny, hopping around in excitement.
I downed my coffee, not wanting to waste it, and shoved the books and paper into my bag. We then made our way to execute the crazy plan.

After managing to convince my dad, I had obtained the keys to the office. Endless questions were shot my way, but all I could do was direct it to our project. Eventually my dad gave in and trusted me to use the office without the supervision of anyone.
Just as Zac mentioned, the basement door was fixed, but we were able to lock it from the outside. The plan was ready.
Step one was already done. Zac somehow got Lexi to come to the office, he just had to keep her occupied in the basement long enough, till Ava made an appearance.
I charged up and down the room. My heart was beating frantically. Beads of sweat started to form on my head. The invisible timer above my head was continuing to tick.
"Why the hell did you call me here?"
Abruptly, I turned around to see Ava hesitantly entering. With her shoulders slouched and lips irked upwards in confusion, slowly entering the building.
"I just need your advice on what kind of stuff to use for my art project." I cringed on the inside. It was beyond me if I sounded convincing.
"You do realise baking is my thing, not art," Ava pointed out the obvious.
A nervous chuckle escaped my mouth. "I know, but I wanted my sisters advice."
I plastered a wide fake smile, showcasing my teeth, waiting for Ava to respond. She let out a long sigh, as if she didn't have a choice.
I was jumping for joy on the inside and took it as my sign to lead the way. My shaky legs took us down to the basement.
When we approached the door, which was slightly ajar, I pushed it slightly; indicating to Zac that we'd arrived.
All of a sudden the plan was set in full motion. Zac swung the door open. When Ava and Lexi saw each other, both their eyes widened and they gasped out loud.
Not allowing them to react, I pushed Ava into the basement. Zac ensured Lexi was pushed back and he quickly slammed the door shut, locking it.
"What the hell hannah!" Ava banged on the door.
"Zac, open this door!" Lexi screeched.
"There's some snacks and water, that'll keep you going, see you in thirty minutes." Zac ignored their protests.
Everything happened so quick. My mind was working at a fast rate and I suddenly remembered the feeling of being trapped in the basement.
I felt like the walls were closing in on me. The air around me was thick and hard to breath through. My chest bobbed up and down, trying to gather fresh air. As I clutched onto my chest, I made a run back upstairs, to the ground level.
It felt like I had a hand around my throat, squeezing the life out of me. Zac came running after me, I acknowledged him speaking, but his voice felt so distanced.
He had forced me to take a seat. He kneeled in front, trying to grasp my attention.
"Hannah? Inhaler? Do you have your inhaler."
The pain in my chest and throat, rippled through me like a wave crashing into a rock. As words were not able to be formed, all I could do was point at my bag.
Zac scurried and trawled through my bag. After he managed to find it. He placed it into my mouth. I took over and held it into my own.
Two puffs were injected and it felt like I was slammed back into the room. The air felt light and my ears were unblocked.
As my sense of reality returned, I realised how close Zac was. Kneeled in front of me, his hand softly placed on my back. His head poised to the side, with his brows furrowed in such worry.
Memories of him calming me down in the basement flooded back into my head. That 'safe' feeling I obtained from him, returned.
"I'm fine," I let out in a coarse whisper.
"Are you sure?"
I nodded, shooting him a reassuring smile. The next thirty minutes were either going to zoom past, or go by very slow. I was so wrapped up in making the plan succeed, I failed to realise how I would have felt going back to the basement.
In some way I felt lucky I had Zac to help me, once again. He acted as my anchor back then and he did it again.
All this still felt very alien. I often wondered whether this was all real. Zac, the guy I despised, now my anchor?
What the hell was going on in my head.
